Marine accidents dip sharply in Hong Kong waters Despite an estimated 5.3 percent rise in the arrival of ocean-going vessels (OGVs) in the first quarter of this year in Hong Kong waters, there were only 19 collisions reported over this period, a sharp 42 percent fall compared with the same period a year earlier. For the whole of last year, there were a total of 278 marine accidents, including 148 cases of collisions, representing a 23 percent and 20 percent fall in marine accidents and collision cases respectively compared with 2006. Senior Marine Officer Lai Chi-tung, Vessel Traffic Centre (VTC) chief, said the fall in marine accidents was due to continuous Olympic torch being carried on "Tin Hau" across the impressive Vict oria Harbour enhancement on marine traffic management and match - ing marine patrols, keeping close contact and communi- cation with relevant authorities in the Mainland and the local shipping community. Marine accidents dip sharply in Hong Kong waters

Despite an estimated 53 percent rise in the arrival of ocean-going vessels (OGVs) in the first quarter ofthis year in Hong Kong waters there were only 19 collisions reported over this period a sharp 42 percent fall compared with the same period a year earlier

For the whole of last year there were a

Mr Lai said the VTC through its advance Vessel Traffic Surveillance System provided vessel traffic service including monitoring and regulating vessels navigating in Hong Kong waters to ensure they arrived departed and conducted their cargo operation safely and expeditiously as possible

Hong Kong waters is divided into three sectors each of which has a

designated working VHF channel through which the VTC provides navigational information to vessels Daily safety messages are also broadshycast at hourly intervals on any situashytion which warrants a vessel alert

Last year a total of 37160 OGVs arrived in Hong Kong The number of OGVs which arrived in the territory in January was 3340 OGVs Using this figure an estimated 10020 OGVs arrived in Hong Kong between January and March this year shy

Chinas first LNG ship placed on HK Shipping Register

Chinas first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier - the Dapeng Sun - was registered with the Hong Kong Shipping Register on April 3 2008 Dapeng Sun was also the vessel that crossed the Hong Kong Shipping Registers 37 million gross tonnage mark

Dapeng Sun is the Mainlands first ever built and owned LNG carrier marking the success of a nine years joint venture project between China Merchants Group COSCO and British Petroleum PLC and also the

start of efforts to build the countrys LNG fleet

With a cargo tank capacity of 147210 cubic metres Dapeng Sun is managed by China LNG Shipping (International) Co Ltd in Hong Kong to carry natural gas from Australia to Guangdong Dapeng LNG terminal in Shenzhen

The vessel is of 2782 metres length 4335 metres breadth 2239 metres moulded depth 97871 tonnes gross tonnage and is fitted with a steam enshygine propulsion system

The Director of Marine Mr Roger Tupper was invited as a guest to attend the naming and delivery ceremony of the Dapeng Sun at Hudong-Zhongshyhua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd in Shanghai on April 3 2008 Mr Tupper presented a plaque to the vessels Master Captain Alan Birley

As at May 22 2008 the Hong Kong Shipping Register had 1274 ships on its book of 3729 million gross

Hong Kong hosts World Ports Summit More than 60 shipping experts

from nine world class ports attendshyed the World Ports Summit at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibishytion Centre on March 11 to discuss topical issues of port security safety and environmental protection

The two-day summit hosted by the Marine Department aimed to provide an international forum for world class port authorities to gather

together for sharing their experiences and come up with a communique for the reference of the international marshyitime world

The nine ports participating in the conference are Shanghai Shenzhen Rotterdam Singapore Los Angeles Seattle Melbourne Busan and Hong Kong

Also attending the event were prominent figures from Hong Kong

shipping industry including represhysentatives from the Hong Kong Ship Owners Association and the Hong Kong Shippers Council

Chinas first LNG ship placed on HK Shipping Register

Chinas first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier - the Dapeng Sun - was registered with the Hong Kong Shipping Register on April 3 2008 Dapeng Sun was also the vessel that crossed the Hong Kong Shipping Registers 37 million gross tonnage mark

Dapeng Sun is the Mainlands first ever built and owned LNG carrier marking the success of a nine years joint venture project between China Merchants Group COSCO and British Petroleum PLC and also the

start of efforts to build the countrys LNG fleet

With a cargo tank capacity of 147210 cubic metres Dapeng Sun is managed by China LNG Shipping (International) Co Ltd in Hong Kong to carry natural gas from Australia to Guangdong Dapeng LNG terminal in Shenzhen

The vessel is of 2782 metres length 4335 metres breadth 2239 metres moulded depth 97871 tonnes gross tonnage and is fitted with a steam enshygine propulsion system

The Director of Marine Mr Roger Tupper was invited as a guest to attend the naming and delivery ceremony of the Dapeng Sun at Hudong-Zhongshyhua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd in Shanghai on April 3 2008 Mr Tupper presented a plaque to the vessels Master Captain Alan Birley

As at May 22 2008 the Hong Kong Shipping Register had 1274 ships on its book of 3729 million gross

from nine world class ports attendshyed the World Ports Summit at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibishytion Centre on March 11 to discuss topical issues of port security safety and environmental protection

The two-day summit hosted by the Marine Department aimed to provide an international forum for world class port authorities to gather

together for sharing their experiences and come up with a communique for the reference of the international marshyitime world

The nine ports participating in the conference are Shanghai Shenzhen Rotterdam Singapore Los Angeles Seattle Melbourne Busan and Hong Kong

Also attending the event were prominent figures from Hong Kong

shipping industry including represhysentatives from the Hong Kong Ship Owners Association and the Hong Kong Shippers Council
