Simon J Arrol CEng FICE

Simon Arrol is the Principal of the consultancy he

established following a 35-year career in the fields of

maritime civil engineering and yacht marinas. This

career may be summarised as:

17 years in the dredging & harbour-works

industry, including with the world's largest

dredging company, Royal Bos Kal is

Westminster Dredging NV, in Europe and West

Africa, and later as co-owner of Dredgework

Services Ltd, a UK maritime contractor with its

own vessels.

18 years in the marina sector, comprising 16 years as Managing Director of Camper &

Nicholsons Marinas Ltd, followed by 2 years as a Director of Island Global Yachting

Dubai LLC. Assignments undertaken in 27 countries, covering conventional marinas,

marinas within urban regenerations, marinas on mega-projects, and almost every

other type.

Having functioned during his career in the different roles of client, consultant, manager

and owner, Arrol offers clients a broad perspective.

URBAN WATERFRONT REGENERATION

During the past few decades, many coastal and riverside cities have regenerated their

docklands.

The regeneration of industrial and military waterfronts is not only financially attractive, but

it returns waterfront access to the general public, access that may have been denied them for

a century or longer.

Marinas have a central and catalytic role to play in such regeneration, bringing amenity,

employment and the spectacle of nautical activity to the waterfronts.

MANAGEMENT & OPERATIONS

Marina management has similarities to hotel management where proven commercial,

operational, and personnel methodology all add value for the owner. The manager’s

knowledge of the international marina business helps the owner avoid commercial, legal

and operational pitfalls.

In the 21st century major marinas should offer the design, environmental, safety, and

management standards of the five-star hospitality sector. A well-designed and managed

marina can only enhance the value of adjacent property developments.

Marinas & Waterfronts

The development and re-development of marinas, including those forming part of urban regeneration projects.

Conceptual designs, masterplans and feasibility studies; planning applications and design briefs; architectural competitions; technical specifications and contract documents; wave modeling, sedimentation modeling, and environmental impact studies; procurement and installation of pontoon systems and superyacht moorings.

Familiarity with many types of pontoon systems and boatyard equipment and techniques for dry-stack storage of yachts.

Urban Waterfront Regeneration

Technical & economic studies for Solidere's Western Marina, Beirut, Lebanon.

Design, construction and management of Grand Harbour Marina, including wave studies and IACS-approved moorings for yachts up to 100m LOA. Part of the urban regeneration of the Three Cities area of Malta.

Concept design for marinas within the mixed-use regeneration of the ex-US Navy Morgan's Point Airbase, Bermuda.

Marina design and contract negotiation for the Port Louis (previously Port George) project on the Islander Hotel and GYS sites in Grenada, British West Indies.

Concept designs (not adopted) for the EXPO 98 marina in the dockland of Lisbon, Portugal.

Design of the berthing for Yacht Club Puerto Madero. The marina is located alongside the historic city-centre dock warehouse of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Commissioning and management of Penarth Marina, Wales. Built within the historic coal exporting dock, this marina included a yacht lock subject to the second highest tidal range in the world (12.5m).

Proposal to the Government of Gibraltar for the regeneration of the Royal Navy's Gun Wharf as a big yacht berthing and maintenance facility.

Design and management of St Peter's Basin Marina, located behind an automatic tidal flap-gate. A regeneration project of the Tyne & Wear Development Corporation, England.

Preliminary appraisal of the potential of Royal Albert Dock Basin for the London Docklands Development Corporation, England.

Urban waterfront regeneration appraisal, Mumbai, India.

Events included the Tall Ships Race (finish), EDS Atlantic Challenge, RORC IR 2000 Championships, Mini-Transat Qualifier, The Times Clipper Round the World Race (finish), and elements of the International Festival of the Sea.
