T he Palm Desert Trip this year came together in such a serendipitous manner, I haveno choice but to call it one of our best trips in my tenure as Racquet Sports Director.
The catered meal at the wonderful residence we've used the last two years for our partyand for some of the members to reside at, was delicious and fresh and on time. Specialthanks to Tess Gill for arranging the catering for this year's Saturday night party. People didnot want to leave, which I took to mean either the party was fun, or they didn't likewherever they were staying. Either way, we had a blast.
The tennis was also scintillating. On day one we played at the Westin Mission Hills, hosted by a wonderful tennis director, Chad Ruthig, we enjoyed seven courts of doublesagainst their club. Chad and his crew were impressed with MCC's sportsmanship andtennis prowess … so much so that we took away the head-to-head victory 4-2 inmatches. The seventh match was all MCC players, so that was a win for us also.
For the second match on Sunday, we journeyed up Portola Avenue to competeagainst Deep Canyon Tennis Club. Nestled in the hills, this club boasted 12 courts, ofwhich we used eight. The tennis was excellent once again, however, the heat got thebest of our players as we were playing at 10:30am, but due to the end of Daylight Saving

Time, we were actually playing in the 11:30amheat. Several had to forego the final set, whichgave the Deep Canyon players the edge 2-5.Again, great times and friendly tennis equaledanother great morning of tennis.

F oam rolling plays a vital role in achieving theresults we expect from fitness and sports
performance programs, keeping us moving atoptimum levels.
So, what is foam rolling? To understand foamrolling you also need to understand a bit aboutmyofascial release. Myofascial release is a stretchingtechnique that involves applying gentle pressure onmuscle knots leading to a release of muscular tension. It’s used to help prevent muscle aches and pain, decrease immobility, and increase flexibility. As a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique, foam rolling issimply an approach you can perform on yourself. Inthe following pages you’ll find an introduction into thewhat, how, and why of foam rolling.
Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR)stretching technique that has been embracedthroughout the fitness industry. This effective andsimple to do technique delivers positive, feel goodresults.
WHY SMR? SMR can be done with a variety of tools beyond
foam rollers, such as medicine balls, handheld rollersor other assistive devices. SMR focuses on the neuraland fascial systems in the body that can benegatively influenced by poor posture, repetitivemotions, or dysfunctional movements. Thesemechanically stressful actions are recognized as aninjury by the body, initiating a repair process calledthe Cumulative Injury Cycle. This cycle follows a path
of inflammation, muscle spasm, and thedevelopment of soft tissue adhesions that can leadto altered neuromuscular control and muscleimbalance. The adhesions reduce the elasticity ofthe soft tissues and can eventually cause apermanent change in the soft tissue structure. SMRfocuses on alleviating these adhesions (also knownas “trigger points” or “knots”) to restore optimalmuscle motion and function.
START FOAM ROLLING Foam rolling should be done before static or
dynamic stretching activities, improving the tissue’sability to lengthen during stretching activities. Foamrolling can also be done as part of the cool-down.Foam rolling activities should be performed ontissues identified as overactive during the assessmentprocess. Foam rolling is not appropriate for all clients, including those with congestive heart failure, kidneyfailure, or any organ failure, bleeding disorders, orcontagious skin conditions.
Slowly roll the targeted area until the mosttender spot is found. Hold on that spot while relaxingthe targeted area and discomfort is reduced, between 30 and 90 seconds. During the exercises itis important to maintain core stability. Use thedrawing-in maneuver (pulling the navel in towardthe spine) to maintain stability in the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. Take the time to experience theexercises and discover how slightly modifyingpositions or angles can target different areas of themuscle. Examples of Foam Rolling Exercises appearon the top of the next page.

In the event you missed the MCC Halloween party,it could have been taken directly from the
Masquerade Ball in Phantom of the Opera. The ladiesespecially were beautiful, the Master of Ceremonieswas handsome and the decorations were not onlybeautiful but creatively displayed. Most importantly, the guests were in a joyous mood.
As we stepped from the elevator, we werewelcomed by a giant black cat who allowed us towalk past him thru the entry filled with ghosts andgoblins floating from the walls and ceilings, then intothe ballroom (restaurant) delightfully decorated withblack and orange. Real pumpkins adorned eachtable with faux bugs crawling on them with candyand other Halloween appropriate items on the tables. After mingling, the friendly guests moved on to thereally delicious buffet dinner followed by the costumecontest. Our chef outdid himself that night!
The contestants were directed to approachedTom Hallick, our superb MC and were asked by Tom togive their name and who they "were." The judgeswatched closely as all contestants were clearlyidentified with special attention given to the bestdressed who were possible winners. There was onegroup winner, another winner for the best couple, andsix more for the best singles. The group winners werethe Ginie Sisters, Uko, Ymi Setsuko and Rieko who
promised to entertain us later with a dance, buteveryone was too happy enjoying the wonderfulmusic and dancing to stop for a break. The SocialCommittee plans to include them in a future event. The couple winners were Linda and Jeff Finndressed as Abner and Daisy Mae. For the singlewinners, Irv Jacobs easily won as Raggedy Andyand Lee Saxon, looking lovely in her Scarlett O’Haragown, Donna Petrac as a gorgeous Cleopatra,Martha McCarthy was creatively surrounded by lotsof purple balloons representing a bunch of purplegrapes and Valerie Sales was a perfect skeleton. They all won a prize. Another man, in blue face, won a prize but I will omit his name in the event heruns for a political office at some time in the future. He had on an elaborate costume that made himlook like a handsome Geni.
Our staff and vendors generously donated theprizes. Vincent at Mr. Polish gave a number of carwashes, The Beauty Salon donated a massage,Gene D, our tennis pro, offered a tennis lesson andTyrone Perkins, gave a training session at our gym.Our Restaurant Manager, Louis, completed theprizes with two gift certificates for dinners and twobottles of wine.
It truly was another successful Halloween eventhere at MCC. Make sure you join us next year!
