Notes From Your Marin 4-H All-Stars:Sonoma-Marin Fair Hosts First Annual Wiseman Cooke Day

Marin 4-H All-Star Katie Shepardson distributes airplane and cargo materials at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds'Wiseman Cooke STEM Challenge day. Also pictured are student from Live Oak School and 'Fred Wiseman' (as

portrayed by Mike Glose, a member of the l iving history group Petalumans of Yesteryear).

On Feb. 17th 1911, Aviator Fred Wiseman boarded a small plane at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgroundswith a few parcels (including a bag of coffee, a copy of the Press Democrat Newspaper, and threeletters for the Santa Rosa Postmaster. Despite two emergency landings, Wiseman successfully

landed in Santa Rosa marking the first ever airmail delivery. 108 years later in 2019, the Marin 4-H All-Stars collaborated with Sonoma-Marin Fairground CEO (and former Marin 4-H Coordinator) Allison

Keaney to mark the day with a STEM challenge.

60 youth from Petaluma schools designed and constructed airplanes (from paper), loaded them withparcels (small photos representing the original cargo: groceries, newspaper, and letters). The All-Stars staffed supply tables, guided youth in their design processes, and helped youth record data

about the success of each design type. Data will be made available to classroom teachers for futureSTEM projects.
