This is a traditional lighted lamp with three books near it. It symbolises knowledge and sacrifice. It also

symbolises the dispelling of darkness (ignorance). The three books depict the body. mind and the soul of an

individual. The lighted lamp refers to the sole aim of an individual in developing his body, mind and soul. This

symbol has been designed by Sri. P.G. & Acharya, who was a well known artist and employee at

Marimallappa’

The lighted lamp also portrays the sacrifice of the founders, reformers, teachers and others who have been

responsible for the all-round development of the students of our educational institutions who pass out of the

portals of these great seats of learning and discipline every year.

When the body, mind and soul of an individual are fully developed. Salvation or ‘Moksha’ (to become one

with the Almighty) is possible. The lighted lamp characterises this eternal truth and gives a clarion call for all

those concerned to tread the path of truth and self-sacrifice. Thus, in a nutshell, it delineates the kind of

education that is being imparted to all the students here for the full development of their body, mind and

soul.

Sri Gurikar Marimallappa was born in Chikkanayakana Halli of Tumkur District in 1818. He was born

to Sri Mallappa and Smt. Honnamma. As he was the first son in the family, he had to shoulder a lot of

responsibility. Music, literature and acting was in his blood. Hence, naturally Mysore city known for its

culture, art and education, attracted this talented young boy.

Marimallappa left his native place at the age of eight and came to Mysore. He drew the attention of

the Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, with his exceptional talent for acting and music and by

his attractive physical appearance. He got a suitable job at the Mysore Palace.

Sri Marimallappa was very much impressed by the service, sacrifice and generosity of the Maharaja

for his subjects. Having no children of his own, he decided to establish an educational institution in the city

of Mysore as suggested by Sri Rangacharlu who was the Controller of the Palace at that time. He collected

Rs. 50,000/- for this purpose. But at the same time he fell seriously ill. He then got a will written on his death-

bed and saw to it that his intention of starting an educational institution was included in it. But some

vested interests got the will so written that his entire property was going to be used for building a temple.

When he heard this on his death bed, he became furious. He got the will changed according to his original

intention. He conveyed his ambition to the famous English architect Mr. Standish Lea and entrusted to him.

The responsibility of constructing a suitable building immediately. He breathed his last in 1872 after being

satisfied that his ambition was going to become a reality.

While the construction of building was going on, there arose the problem of paucity of funds. Smt.

Mallamma, wife of Sri Gurikar Marimallappa, came forward to meet the entire expenditure by selling all her

jewellery. Thus, because of the generosity of both the husband and wife, a beautiful building was

constructed in the heart of the city. In the course of time, this educational institution acquired fame for

disseminating knowledge and skills to both urban and rural students.

Sri M.N. Mahantha Devaru was a person whose life's mission was the all round development of

Marimallappa's Educational Institution. He also believed in the noble saying, "Work is Divinity"

(Kayakave Kailasa) and practised it throughout his life. He was born on the 11th of December, 1896 at

Madrahalli, a village in T. Narasipur Taluk in Mysore District.

Sri. M.N. Mahantha Devaru who was also a famous advocate in the city of Mysore, served

Marimallappa's Educational Institution, as the President of the Board of Trustees from 1959 till his

death in 1991. Because of his endless and selfless sacrifice, this seat of learning has become well

known, not just in Karnataka, but also all over India and abroad. He also served many other

philanthropic institutions in various capacities. Wherever he worked, his efficiency and sincerity were

lauded by one and all. He was the President of the Mysore Jilla Board, a representative of the old

Mysore Legislative Assembly, and a member of the Legislative council and Legislative Assembly after

independence.

Sri Mahantha Devaru was known for his simplicity, devotion to duty, and honesty. He served

society in various capacities and became popular among all those who came in contact with him. He

was a man with liberal and noble ideas, having faith in 'Dharma' and 'Justice". He served our

educational institutions with untiring and selfless effort for a long time. It is our bounden duty to

remember this noble soul.

Sri K.N. Shivalingaiah was born in Kyathanahalli of Pandavapura Taluk in Mandya District in

1923. He completed his primary education in his birth place. He continued his further education in

Mysore. He got his B.A. Degree from Mysore University and B.L. Degree from Bombay University. He

began his career as an apprentice under Sri. M.N. Mahanta Devaru, a famous lawyer of that time. He

also practiced as a criminal lawyer for a few years before he took over the administration of his 'Alma

Mater' Marimallappa's Educational Institution as the Hon. Secretary.

Sri. K.N. Shivalingaiah was the Hon. Secretary and Hon. President of the Marimallappa's

Educational Trust for about 35 years. He strived tirelessly for the all-round development of our

educational institution in this long tenure. It is because of his tireless and honest efforts, our

institution has become not only the talk of the town, but also famous all over India and even abroad.

He undertook educational tours to many European, African and 'Commonwealth' countries in order

to study the method of education there. He implemented many reformatory measures in the field

of education. In memory of his father Sri Nanjappaiah and daughter Smt. K.S. Kumuda who was a

lecturer in History in Marimallappa's P.U College for a number of years, he built an entire block of

spacious class rooms at a cost of more than five lakh rupees. Even when he was bed-ridden due to

serious illness, he evinced keen interest in the welfare of our institution and guided us in all possible

ways. It is because of his honesty, forethought, sacrifice and service, Marimallappa's Educational

Institution has carved a niche for itself in the field of education.

Mallamma Marimallappa Women’s

When a school was started on the 15th of June 1876, by Sri Gurikar Marimallappa at his own residence in the Mysore city, there was no problem of accommodation. As the school went on growing from strength to strength, there arose the necessity for a bigger building. Then the present building housing Marimallappa's P.U. College, High School and Higher Primary School, was constructed. When there was a shortage of money for completing it, Smt. Mallamma, wife of Sri Gurikar Marimallappa, sold all her jewellery so that the construction of the building continued. Thus, this imposing building was completed, with the supreme sacrifice and service of the noble lady. As such, it was felt by the Marimallappa's Educational Trust to start a Women's First Grade College in the name of Smt. Mallamma. In this way, Mallamma Marimallappa Women's Arts and Commerce College came into existence in 1982. This college, in course of time has grown from strength to strength with experienced and dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff.

This college has all the required modern facilities like well equipped laboratories, sophisticated computers, a well stocked library, a seminar hall, modern furniture and spacious classrooms. Coaching is given to the students both in English and Kannada medium. With a view to ensure all-round development of the students, many committees and clubs like Cultural Forum, Sports and Games Committee, Committee for conducting Mallamma Memorial Competitions, Annual College Magazine Committee, Committee for Students Forum Election, NSS Committee, Quiz and Nature Club are being formed every year. These various committees and clubs encourage students in shaping their future by inculcating in them leadership qualities.

The college is successful in achieving excellent academic results year after year since 1987-88 and till date, and has secured a total of 64 ranks and several gold medals at the University Examinations. We owe our achievements to the kind and active co-operation of the Management of the College.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

Code of Conduct :

Dress Code: Students should wear the uniform stipulated by the college. The blue salwar suit which has

been selected as the college uniform should be worn along with black slip-on canvas shoes.

1. Students should attend classes regularly.

2. Minimum attendance of 75% is compulsory.

3. Students who do not have the required attendance will not be allowed to appear for the final

examination.

4. Students should read all notices put up on the notice board periodically and follow the instructions.

5. Students are expected to participate in all the activities of the college compulsorily.

6. During free hours the students should utilise the library facilities or engage themselves in extra-

curricular activities.

7. Students may normally meet the Principal between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. except under extraordinary

circumstances.

8.

9. Visitors may contact the college office for any assistance. Such visitors shall not go to classrooms for

any purpose without the prior permission of the Principal.

10. The students should remember that the college is a temple of learning. Hence pursuit of knowledge

should become their primary concern. They are advised to seek academic assistance from lecturers

constantly.

11. The college is very particular about the discipline of the students. If a student does not adhere to the

rules of the college, disciplinary action will be taken against her by informing the parents/guardians or

in any other suitable manner.

12. Students should follow any other rules to be framed by the college from time to time, keeping in view

the discipline and academic standard of the college.

13. All the students should come in neatly dressed uniform daily.

Release of College Magazine

Library Rules & Regulations

Terms and conditions for borrowing books form the college library1. Students may borrow books from the library every week on the day specified for issuing books to their

classes.

2. They may borrow two books at a time.

3. The students should always possess the college identity card affixed with a passport size photograph

duly attested by the Principal. Identity card must be produced at the time of borrowing books and

reference work.

4. Borrowers should not write or mark in the pages and damage the books, manuscripts, maps or charts

belonging to the library.

5. If any damage to the books or destruction of other property belonging to the library is caused by the

borrower, she shall be required to replace such a book or other property damaged or pay double the

cost. If any volume of a set of books is damaged, the whole set of books must be replaced.

6. Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias and such other books are meant for reference only.

7. Books must be returned to the library on the 15th day from the date of borrowing. If the books are not

returned within the due date, an overdue charge of Rs. 2/- per day, per book will be collected from the

defaulter.

8. On the day of issue, she must inspect the pages and if there are any missing pages, it should be brought

to the notice of the librarian. The plea that damage has already occurred to the book/s and the

negligence to observe the rules will not be entertained.

9. A duplicate library card will be issued on payment of a penalty of Rs. 50/- only when the original is lost.

10. Any difficulties or grievances felt in utilising the library should be brought to the notice of the Chief

librarian / Principal.

The Principal / Chamber is in the ground floor. It is quite spacious and well decorated. It looks elegant and beautiful with new furniture and a computer cabin. Parents, students and the public can meet the Principal between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

A spacious library that can accommodate more than hundred people at a time, with separate reference and reading sections - is provided for students and staff of the college.

There are about 20,603 books, which can be used through the 'Open Access' system. Besides, nearly 50 magazines, periodicals, as well as International journals and 10 news paper are subscribed.

Internet facility is also provided to the students with in the library which allows them access to latest information. Apart from this there is a 'Competitive Corner' which has documents, books and CD's pertaining to various regional and national competitive examinations.

The 'Poor Students Fund' allows girls from deprived section of the society to avail an additional book borrowing facility.

The library functions from 10 am to 5.30 pm on all working days.

The departments of Computer Science, Geography and Commerce have well equipped labs. There are more than 50 computers for the use of students. The Geography lab is equipped with an overhead projector, TV set, charts, models and wall maps. Mineral & Rocks Specimens. Student can study the physical & special properties & minerals & rocks with special reference to their usage. They also study the commercial importance of minerals & rocks.

The National Service Scheme was introduced in our college in the year 1984. Week-end community outreach programmes and special camps are conducted every year. Our NSS Unit was adjudged the Best unit in the year 1991-92 and Dr. N. Savithri received the Best NSS Officer Award. Every year the college organises N.S.S. Special Camp.

Special lecture programmes that create environmental awareness are organised by the Nature Club. Apart from this a trekking expedition is conducted every year.

The Commerce Forum is actively involved in conducting several creative intra-class programmes for commerce students. The commerce carnival held annually showcases the talents of the students. The Forum also publishes a monthly bulletin called 'SPARK' which is entirely managed by the students.

Adolescence is a vital period of life marked by increased sensitivity, emotional turbulence and instability. As our students go through 'Storm and Stress', they are likely to feel lonely, neglected and depressed. To help them come out of such despair, we have set up a Counselling Cell which is managed by Prof. Nalini Chandar who is also a qualified councilor.

The management has provided a common gallery entitled "Marimallappa Bhavana" for all the wings of the institution to be used for conducting several cultural and educational programmes.

Canteen facility is provided to staff and students where a variety of food items are available at subsidized rates.

In the past few years, hundreds of our students have been offered high-profile jobs. Prof. R.M. Bewoor of the Department of Commerce is in charge of the Career Guidance & Placement Cell.

The annual college magainze "Sowjanya," represents the creative spirit of the young minds. It bagged the III prize from the University of Mysore for its excellent presentation and publication.

The IQAC comprising of teachers and leading citizens of the city, monitor quality initiation taken by the college. Their valuable guidance and suggestions have proved beneficial to the smooth functioning of the various departments of the college.

Francis Bacon opined that travel is a part of education. Students are taken on educational tours and trekking on a regular basis, which helps them to inculcate environmental awareness and understand the importance of historical avenues.

Seminars and guest lectures are organised by each Department every year. Topics of seminars are related to important aspects of the syllabus and deal with current issues. A beautiful seminar hall is provided in the college for this p u r p o s e . A n O v e r h e a d Projector/LCD projector i s available in this hall. Subject-wise seminars are conducted and experts are invited to deliver lectures.

The Forum not only aims at creating a platform to bring out the latent talents of the students but also form a group of cultural ambassadors who would uphold traditional values.

The University of Mysore, has made industrial visits mandatory for B.Com, course. Such visits facilitate the students to get a practical know - how of what they learn in the class-rooms.

Students exhibiting excellence in studies and extra curricular activities are selected and interviewed by a panel of Teachers to assess their IQ and "Best Student" award is given to an outstanding student, both from Arts & Commerce stream.

The management of the college has instituted awards & cash prizes to Rank Holders/Gold Medalists and also to those students who score highest marks in each class every year.
