Text Access for Close Reading (UDL)

Allow students to show their understanding through multiple means oral discussions, filling in a graphic organizer, creating a

chart, etc.

Fiction use text at student’s instructional level

Non – fiction may have to focus your attention on visuals only such as

picture captions, bolded words, charts, graphs, etc.

Students may “listen to” and discuss text PRIOR to being introduced to it in the general education setting

Provide choice in text to use for close reading

Woman in Purple CoatFollow up the “What do you notice?” discussion

with the following questions:

Where did your eye go first? What can you tell about this woman from the

painting? What might be the occasion of the painting? What is the effect of the busy patterns? Of the

colors?Do you think she picked and arranged the flowers?Do you think she plans to eat the fruit?

Beulah’s BabyThen show students Primrose McPherson’s painting

entitled “Beulah’s Baby.” Where did your eye go first? Why?How is it similar to Matisse’s work? How is it

different? What can you tell about her life? How is the emotion in this painting communicated? What do the colors suggest? Look at Renaissance

paintings of the Madonna and draw some conclusions.End by looking at the two paintings side by side to

accentuate the comparison.
