Act I; Scene 1 Led by Solor, a group of young warriors is hunting a tiger. Breaking away from them, Solor persuades the fakir Magdaveya to arrange a ren-dezvous for him with the bayadère Nikia, one of the dancers who serves the temple’s sacredflame within. e High Brahmin comes out ofthe temple leading a solemn procession, whichis a sign for the ritual of fire to begin. Fakirs andbayadères perform ritual dances and then Nikia,the fairest of all the bayadères, appears.

Although he has taken vows of celibacy and is leader of the temple’s priesthood, the HighBrahmin confesses to Nikia that he loves her,and he promises her wealth and power if she will be his. Nikia rejects his love. Night falls andSolor and Nikia meet secretly while Magdaveyakeeps watch, though this does not prevent theHigh Brahmin from eavesdropping on theirassignation. Solor asks Nikia to flee with him.She consents, but first demands his vow of eter-nal fidelity.

Act I; Scene 2e Rajah tells his daughter, Gamzatti, that shewill meet and marry the man to whom she wasbetrothed when still a child. e Rajah intro-duces Solor to his daughter. Solor is enrapturedby Gamzatti’s beauty but is thrown into confu-sion as he remembers Nikia and the vows hehas just made to her.

e time for the marriage to be consecratedis close and Nikia is requested to dance in theholy rites.

e High Brahmin enters and tells the Rajahof the love vows he has overheard between Nikiaand Solor. e Rajah is incensed, but his deci-sion remains unchanged: Solor will marry hisdaughter and the bayadère will die. e HighBrahmin did not expect such an outcome and

reminds the Rajah of the vengeance of the godsif their servant should be killed at the temple.

Gamzatti has overheard the conversation.She summons a slave girl to bring Nikia to her.When she appears, Gamzatti tells her of the ap-proaching wedding, showing a portrait of Soloras the man she is to marry. Nikia is horror-struck and protests that Solor has in fact sworneternal fidelity to her alone. e Rajah’s daugh-ter haughtily demands that she should relin-quish him, but the bayadère would prefer death.She pulls out a dagger to strike Gamzatti, but aslave girl intervenes.

Act IIIn the Garden of the Rajah’s Palace, magnificentcelebrations for the wedding of Solor and Gam -zatti are underway and a succession of dancesprovides entertainment for all the guests. Nikiain her turn is ordered to dance. A slave girlbrings in a basket of flowers which Dugmantadeclares to be a gi to Nikia. Nikia receives itbut a poisonous snake hidden in the basket slipsout and bites her. e High Brahmin comes for-ward to offer her an antidote if only she will lovehim; she refuses him yet again. Nikia dies withSolor kneeling at her side.

Act III; Scene 1Solor is distraught and tormented by remorse.Magdaveya attempts without success to diverthim from his grief, and so he calls for a snakecharmer. While the man plays, Solor falls asleepto the sound of the flute.

Act III; Scene 2Solor dreams he is in the Kingdom of Shades and,as he watches, ghosts of those long-dead appearbefore him. Among them he sees his belovedNikia and she beckons to him to follow her…

La Bayadère is one of the most popular balletsin the classical legacy. It is a story of love toldthrough demure dance duets and pantomimedialogues, large-scale corps de ballet ensembles,and the striking dances of the soloists. A color -ful and vast canvas, woven together usinghighly complex choreographic language, LaBayadère is a test of professionalism, the sparkleof the ballerina and the male principal, and theacting abilities of the performers. Marius Petipacreated this production in 1877 for a gala per -formance of the virtuoso ballerina YekaterinaVazem in an attempt to showcase the talent ofhis favorite ballerina as fully as possible and ina worthy setting. Petipa laid out his dance poembased on a plot about the love between a nobleIndian warrior and a temple dancer. e exoticflavor was to be a keystone of the spectacle,while the melodramatic story of a lovedeceived—typical for the theater in the middleof the 19th century—was simple in terms of its literary expo sition; through its choreo -graphic revelations, Peti pa filled it with depth,nuances, and generalizations. e structure of

the production was molded by the brilliant flairof the choreographer, who knew how to blendtogether the necessary proportions of the granddivertissement of a palace celebration and thepiercing emotion of the abandoned heroine’stragic monologue, the tense emotionality of thepantomime depiction of worldly events, and thealoofness of classical dance in the Kingdom ofShades. With the passing of time this structurewas altered. In the 20th century, La Bayadère“lost weight” by dropping an entire act—therationalism of the Soviet view of the worldrejected the use of simple-hearted props todepict retribution for breaking an oath, andalong with the final destruction of the palace,the ballet also lost its dramatic and dancedénouement. e realities of 19th-centurytheater that remained in the ballet—plush tigersand elephants on wheels—look touchinglyamusing today, but their modest specific detailsset off the timeless harmony of the act of theShades, Petipa’s bewitching masterpiece inwhich his genius was, as never before, close toperfection.

e Mariinsky Ballet is closely linked with theentire history of the development of Russianchoreographic art, which began more than twoand a half centuries ago. An important role inthe establishment and evolution of Russianballet was played by foreign dance masters. ehistory of St. Petersburg ballet in the 19th cen -tury was associated with the activities of CharlesDidelot, Jules Perrot, and Arthur Saint-Léon. In 1869, the position of principal ballet masterwas entrusted to Marius Petipa, who markedlyraised the professional standards of the com -pany. e peak accomplishments of this famouschoreographer were ballets staged in the periodof his collaboration with the composers PyotrIlyich Tchaikovsky and Alexander Glazunov—e Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Ray monda.At the turn of the 19th century, the MariinskyBallet produced such great dancers as MathildeKschessinska, Olga Preobrazhenskaya, AnnaPavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Olga Spesivtseva,and Vaslav Nijinsky. Many of them broughtglory to Russian ballet during the legendarySaisons russes in Paris, which saw the pioneeringworks of Michel Fokine presented in Europe.

In the 1920s, when Fyodor Lopukhov, adaring innovator and a brilliant connoisseur ofthe past, became head of the company, itsrepertoire was enriched with new productions,in particular ballets dealing with contemporarylife. Galina Ulanova, Alexei Yermolayev, MarinaSemenova, and Vakhtang Chabukiani alldanced at the Mariinsky eatre during thatperiod. Ballet in the 1930s was largely influ -enced by dramatic theater, and this was reflectedin such productions as Rostislav Zakharov’s eFountain of Bakhchisarai and Leonid Lavrov -sky’s Romeo and Juliet. From the 1950s throughthe 1970s, ballets by Leonid Yakobson, YuriGrigorovich, and Igor Belsky revived the tradi -tions of symphonic dances. e success of theseproductions obviously would have been impos -sible without superb performers. During thatperiod, the company’s dancers included IrinaKolpakova, Natalia Makarova, Alla Osipenko,Irina Gensler, Alla Sizova, Rudolf Nureyev,Mikhail Baryshnikov, Valery Panov, and Yuri

Soloviev. e present-day repertoire of theMariinsky Ballet includes, along with Petipa’slegacy—Swan Lake, Raymonda, Le Corsaire, La Bayadère, and e Sleeping Beauty—balletsstaged by Michel Fokine, George Balanchine,Frederic Ashton, William Forsythe, AlexeiRatmansky, Angelin Preljocaj, and Wayne Mc -Gregor.

e Mariinsky Orchestra is one of the oldestmusical ensembles in Russia. It can trace its history back to the early 18th century and thedevelopment of the Court Instrumental Chapel.In the 19th century, an extremely importantrole in the emergence of the Mariinsky Orches -tra was played by Eduard Nápravník, who di-rected it for over half a century. e excellenceof the orchestra was recognized on numerousoccasions by the world-class musicians whoconducted it, among them Berlioz, Wagner, von Bülow, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Nikisch, andRachmaninoff. During Soviet times, the en-semble’s illustrious traditions were continuedby conductors including Vladimir Dranish ni -kov, Ariy Pazovsky, Yevgeny Mravinsky, Kon -stantin Simeonov, and Yuri Temirkanov.

e orchestra has had the honor of being the first to perform many operas and ballets byTchaikovsky; operas by Glinka, Mussorgsky,and Rimsky-Korsakov; and ballets by Shosta -kovich, Khachaturian, and Asafiev.

Since 1988, the orchestra has been directedby Valery Gergiev, a musician of the highestorder and an outstanding figure in the musicworld. Maestro Gergiev’s arrival at the helmushered in a new era of rapid expansion of theorchestra’s repertoire, which today includes thesymphonies of Beethoven, Mahler, Prokofiev,and Shostakovich; requiems by Mozart, Ber -lioz, Verdi, Brahms, and Tishchenko; and var-ious works by composers including Stravinsky,Messiaen, Dutilleux, Henze, Shchedrin, Gubai -dulina, Kancheli, and Karetnikov. e orches-tra performs programs of symphonic music at prestigious concert venues throughout theworld.

Alexei Repnikov (conduc-tor). Aer graduating fromthe Specialized SecondarySchool of Music of theSt.  Petersburg Conserva -tory in 1991 (the tromboneclass of Georgy Straut man),Repnikov continued his

studies at the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conser va tory (trombone class of sen-ior lecturer Boris Vinogradov and Prof. ViktorSumerkin). In 2009, he participated in a train-ing course specializing in symphonic conduct-ing (class of Alexander Polishchuk).

In autumn 1991, Repnikov joined the Mari -insky eatre as a stage band musician, enteringthe  symphony orchestra in  1996 (trombonesection). He made his debut with the Mariinskyeatre Symphony Orchestra with the balletsLe  Sacre du printemps and e  Magic Nut(2007). Since then he has regularly conductedballet productions. Repnikov’s repertoire in-cludes the ballets Anna Karenina, Apollo,Ballet No. 2, La Bayadère, Prodigal Son, Le Sacredu printemps, Le Spectre de la rose, e MagicNut, Don Quixote, Jewels, e Firebird, Giselle,Cinderella, Infra, Carmen-Suite, Carna val,Le Corsaire, Swan Lake, Leningrad Symphony,Pétrouchka, Polovtsian Dances, Raymonda,Romeo and Juliet, Sylvia, La Sylphide, Symphonyin C, e Sleeping Beauty, Tarantella, eme andVariations, e  Dying Swan, Piano Concerto No. 2, Schéhérazade, Chopiniana, Scotch Sym -phony, e Nutcracker, Études, Concerto DSCH,“Paquita” Grand Pas, Inside the Lines, andTchaikovsky Pas de Deux.

As a conductor, Repnikov has toured withthe Mariinsky Ballet to Covent Garden (GreatBritain), the  Festspielhaus (Germany), andthe Metropolitan Opera and Kennedy Center,as well as to Tokyo, Bang kok, Singa pore, Bar -celona, and Hong Kong.

Alexei Repnikov conceived the idea of estab-lishing the Grand Brass Ensemble and foundedthe  Brass Evenings at the Mariinsky interna-tional festival, first held at the Mariinsky ea -tre Concert Hall in March 2008. As leader ofthe Grand Brass Ensemble, he has taken partin  the Summer Festival in Mikkeli (Fin land,2009) and toured to Great Britain, Japan, andSwitzerland.

Yuri Fateev (acting directorof the  Mariinsky Ballet,Honored Artist of Russia)was born in St. Petersburg,graduated from the Vaga -nova Choreography Schoolin 1982, and joined theMariinsky (Kirov) Ballet

Company the same year. His repertoire in -cluded the ballets Giselle, La Bayadère, Paquita,Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, e Creation ofthe World, Le Carnaval, La fille mal gardée, eKnight in the Tiger’s Skin, and Coppélia. In 1996,he became a coach with the Mariinsky Ballet,and in this post he worked on Mariinsky eatrepremiere performances of ballets by GeorgeBalanchine, Roland Petit, John Neumeier, AlexeiRatman sky, William Forsythe, ChristopherWheeldon, and José Antonio. He has been aguest coach with the Royal Ballet in Londonand Russia’s Bolshoi eatre and given masterclasses for the ballet company of the ParisOpera, as well as teaching with the Swe dishRoyal Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, andDanish Royal Ballet, where he staged aproduction of highlights from the ballet LeCorsaire. Fateev was involved in the Kings ofDance project in Russia and the United States,as well as Stiefel and Stars in the US, where hestaged highlights from classical ballets. Since2008, he has been the acting director of theMariinsky Ballet.
