TITEL SLIDE #2
EXERGY IN EU POLICY
Mariette Bilius

▪ cascading and waste heat use do not count
▪ burning biofuel for low temperature use is favoured over use of residual fossil heat
▪ burning biofuel counts equal to low temperature renewable heat for low temperature demand
IN EU BUILDINGS POLICY TODAY…
Effect: more need for high quality renewable energy

THIS TELLS US....
⚫ Renewable feedstock and saving energy do not cover all options to reduce use of (fossil) energy
⚫ Cascading and using low temperature sources for low temperature demand helps meeting transition goals

POLICY ADVICE: ADD EXERGY
⚫ Policy should favour geothermal and waste heat over burning biomass for low temperature demands
⚫ Policy should acknowledge that waste heat use is even more efficient than a heat pump if quality is taken into account
⚫ Policy should favour waste heat (getting lost if unused) over geothermal energy (that can be kept for future demand)
