MAPS presents free, informative, engaging and inspiring community science programs. 7:30 pm, MJC West Campus Sierra Hall 132

Free Parking and Admission Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, MJC Professor Emeritus of Earth Science and author of bestselling texts on earth science and meteorology, Don Ahrens will lead a discussion of the basics of climate change in a presentation entitled

Climate Change: Yes or No. Please spread the word and come and support one of MJC’s most recognized Professors.

Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, Paul E. Lenze, Jr., Northern Ariz.Univ., Syrian Forced Migration & Public Health in the European Union. Since the Syrian Civil War began in 2011, more than 400,000 people have been killed and millions displaced. This talk examines the causes of the Syrian Civil War and the impact of migration on public health in the Middle East and Europe. Awarded an “Excellence in Teaching Award” from the National Society of Leadership and Success! March, 22, 2019, Steven Murov, http://murov.info , Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, MJC. Periodic Table Milestones and Real and Fake Elements. In honor of the International Year of the Periodic Table and the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table, Steve will discuss the history of the periodic table and some fictional elements such as kryptonite. The talk will include demos and be based in part on Steve’s websites -http://murov.info/timelines.htm, http://murov.info/periodictables.htm . Preshow 7:10 pm. Program will probably last until 9 pm. Friday, April 12, 2019, Exoplanet expert, Jonathan Fortney of UCSC. The Kepler Mission: Exotic Solar Systems on the Path to Earth-Like Planets. Humans have long wondered about other planetary systems and if potentially Earth-like worlds exist around other stars. NASA's Kepler mission was designed to answer these questions. The Kepler space observatory launched in 2009 and just finished operations in November, 2018. It discovered nearly 3,000 confirmed exoplanets and several thousand additional candidates. We now know that while most planetary systems do not look like our own, potentially habitable planets are common in our galaxy. I will share insights from the mission and what it means for the future of planetary research. http://www.ucolick.org/~jfortney/ MAPS is grateful to ASMJC, the MJC Foundation, SCOE, MJC, the MTA (Modesto Teachers Assn.) and the GVM for generous support.

On tba, 2019, the Great Valley Museum Foundation will hold its fourth Annual Gala fundraiser, “The Genius of Birds.” This event will consist of a dinner program and silent auction attended by local area members just like you. The funds generated from this event will go directly to providing education on our local natural heritage and offering multiple science programs for the youth members of our community.
