joyous occasion of St. Mary‟s College celebrating its 70th

College Day. As we reflect on the

glorious path this great institution has travelled so far, I would like to place on record the

Marian Flash 2017-2018 highlighting some of the significant feats achieved during this

academic year.

St. Mary‟s College holds a rich academic and spiritual heritage as a Christian minority

institution for the past seven decades and has made its mark, right from its inception, in

empowering women in their march towards excellence. The institution is committed to the

noble cause of liberating young women, especially the ones belonging to coastal areas and

preparing them to assume leading roles in making societal changes. The committed service of

the institution has earned St. Mary‟s a significant regional recognition.

Founded in the year 1948, with just 21 students, St. Mary‟s College has grown

multifold in its 70-years of Jubilant Journey nurturing at present around 3200 students. We

are proud that the college today is equipped with the best of faculty, infrastructure and

systems to support its mission to teach and train women to be socially sensitive and globally

competitive. We feel happy that St. Mary‟s lives up to the lofty vision of the founders in

making the young women as agents of an egalitarian society through liberative education.

commemorates the institution‟s magnificent glory in its 70-year journey. The 70th

Jubilee

Year 2017-2018 is commemorated as the Year of Joy. The administrative team backed up by

Dr. Sr. Jessie Fdo, Secretary, Dr. Sr. Alphonse Roseline Mary, Principal, Dr. Sr. Arockia

Jenecius Alphonse, Vice Principal, Rev. Sr.Peregrina Mary, Director of Self Supportive

courses, Dr. Dulcy Elizabeth, Controller of Examinations have led the institution in all its

great endeavours in the arena of education.

The College has successfully completed 9 years of Autonomy and has been revamped

with the introduction of new School systems like School of Biological Sciences, School of

Language and Culture, School of Management and Economics, School of Physical and

Computing Sciences. The Deans ensure that the School System in St. Mary‟s functions

effectively furthering future progress.

The Vice principals of various disciplines monitor the discipline and decorum of the

Marian family. The Research forum has created a platform to promote the scope for research

and consultancy in St. Mary‟s. The IQAC ensures that the institution is progressing in a

qualitative manner in accordance with the precepts set by the UGC. Centres for Excellence

escorted by its Directors, enable the institution to compete in the sphere of education and

employment.

St.Mary‟s gratefully remembers the dedicated service of Dr. L. Thilagarani, Head and

Associate Professor of Economics, Mrs. A.A. Maria Celine, Head and Associate Professor of

Commerce for their dedication to the institution for over three decades. The institution

acknowledges the sincere service of Mr. D. Antony Charles, Senior Grade Record Clerk for

his 30 years of service to the institution. The Management and the Marian family

acknowledge their committed contributions to the institution and wish them a happy and

peaceful life.

Rodrigo, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Annie Devotta, Assistant Professor of

Commerce, Dr. Maria Jenifer Thaya, Assistant Professor of History and Dr. E. Daffodil D

Almeida, Assistant Professor of Botany. At present, 60 of our faculty members hold the

doctoral degree and many of them pursue Ph. D. programme as part time.

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell, has effectively involved in the activities of the

college. As the focus was to go in for Fourth Cycle of Accreditation, the Cell concentrated in

its preparation. All the faculty of the college contributed immensely towards it.

Documentation was further strengthened, with the creation of student database.

On 1st August 2017, a workshop on Evaluation

Reforms and Practice‟ was given by Dr.E. Ramganesh,

Professor and Head, Department of Educational Technology,

Bharathidasan University, Trichy. In his input session he

clearly picturised the present scenario of education. He

insisted on the importance of framing curriculum and the

need to design the curriculum in accordance with global

needs. Dr. Ramganesh trained the staff to frame questions for

evaluation. The workshop on Evaluation Reforms and practice was highly beneficial.

As part of the NAAC preparation a meeting was convened on 4th

September 2017, by

Dr.M. Daniel, Professor and chair, School of Physics, Bharathidasan University, Trichy. He

addressed the faculty on NAAC preparation and requirements. In his session he detailed

explicitly on the seven criteria. Dr. Daniel clarified the doubts and questions raised by the

faculty. The fruitful meeting was another step forward towards NAAC‟s fourth accreditation

cycle.

The IQAC organized a meeting on 17th

October

2017. It was presided over by the Principal Rev.

Dr.Sr.Alphonse Roseline Mary. Prof. James, Associate

Professor of Physics, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil

addressed the faculty on NAAC self study report

preparation. He enumerated on the process of filling the

qualitative and quantitative metrics for each criteria. Prof.

James also highlighted how to prepare program, course and

specific learning outcomes.

A One Day Workshop on Outcome based Curriculum (OBC) and Framework was

organized by the IQAC on 14th

February 2018.The workshop was inaugurated by Principal

Rev. Dr.Sr.Alphonse Roseline Mary. Dr.E. Ramaganesh, Professor and Head, Department of

Educational technology, Bharathidasan University, Trichy, enumerated on the techniques to

be followed in framing the programme / course outcomes, objectives, vision and mission for

the curriculum. The workshop enriched the academic acumen of the faculty.

The work towards the completion of NAAC requirements for accreditation is under

progress. Feedback has been meticulously obtained from stakeholders and students. The

IQAC ensures a progressive development for the college.

The academic year 2017-2018 began on 16th

June followed by activities and

programmes. The college commenced for the first year students on 27th

June 2017. The

administrative members, the Secretary, Principal, Vice Principal, Controller of Examinations

and SSC Director met all the parents and students of the first year in the college Auditorium

separately, briefing out therules and regulations of the college and the examination

procedures to be followed for theacademic progress of the students.

On 6th

July 2017 Students‟ Council Union Election was held. The voting session

began at 9 A.M. in the college auditorium in the presence of the Principal, Rev. Dr. Sr.

Alphonse Roseline Mary, the Vice-Principal, Rev. Dr. Sr. ArockiaJenecius Alphonse, the

Director of SSC, Rev. Sr. Peregrina Mary, Students‟ Council Advisors Dr. S. Euchrista

Immaculate Sylvia, Dr. Jacqulaine Leo, Dr. G. Flora, Ms. G. Sharon RoqueCorera, Mrs. S.M.

Rojapoo, Dr. P.Latha, Ms. Robina Tony and Mrs. AdreenaPaldano and the members of the

Election Committee. The e-voting software was developed by Mrs. J. AnilaMaily, Associate

Professor of Computer Science. The nominees of the Students‟ Council Union were also

present during the course of the election.More than 1800 students exercised their democratic

right to vote for the candidate of their choice. Of the eleven contestants three from the

regular stream and three from theself supporting stream were elected as office bearers and the

remaining were elected as student convenors.

The inaugural ceremony of the Student‟s Council Union was held on 14th

July 2017 at

11 A.M. Professor S. Alex Parimalam, Dean of students, Department of Visual

Communication, Loyola College, Chennai presided over the ceremony and delivered the

inaugural address. The Principal, Rev. Dr. Sr. Alphonse Roseline Mary conducted the

investiture ceremony for the elected office bearers of the Students‟ Council. Ms. E. Prishal

Fernando and Ms. T. Teresa assumed office as the Student President of the Regular and Self

Supporting streams respectively.An inaugural tableau depicting the theme of the academic

year, “JOY: Share, Serve and Shine”, was staged. The student body consisting of the III year

representatives, the Presidents and the Secretaries of various associations, clubs and forums

assumed office, in the presence of the Vice Principals, Deans and Directors, to efficiently

carry out their duties during their term of office.

The office bearers of the Student‟s Council Union organized “Talentia 2017” for the I

year students as a platform to exhibit their talents.

On 21st July 2017 the college gloriously celebrated the Grand Inaugural of its 70 years

(1948-2017) of Jubilant Journey. A special Jubilee Mass was conducted by the Bishop of

Thoothukudi Diocese, Most Rev. YvonAmbroise and the „Jubilee Block‟ was blessed by the

Bishop on the same day in commemoration of the 70 years of the Marian journey.Rev. Sr.

Jeyarani OSM Provincial of Maria Natchathira Province presided over the ceremony and

addressed the gathering.

International youth day along with the 75th

anniversary of Quit India Movement and

70th

year of Indian Independence was celebrated on 12th

August, 2017 for all the III year U.G.

students. Rev.Fr. Rolington V.F. presided over the ceremony and addressed the students on

“Potentials of the Youth”.

On 21st August 2017, an International Seminar on the

topic: Education for Ethical Enlightenment: Deliberations on

Human Excellence was organized. Rev. Dr. Sr. Alphonse

Roseline Mary, Principal introduced the guests to the gathering.

Most Rev. YvonAmbroise, Bishop of Thoothukudi Diocese

delivered the Presidential Address and initiated thetheme of

education for ethical enlightenment. Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Jerome S.J. offered the Keynote

Address. Rev. Fr. Paul Raj, Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome and Rev. Fr. Sahaya Das

Fernando, Salesian Pontifical University, concentrated more on “Modern Technology and

Personal Integrity” with ethical enlightenment.

The Students‟ Council Union, in association with the Sports club, hosted

ManonmaniamSundaranar University‟s 19th

Intercollegiate Kho-Kho and Ball- Badminton

Tournament. The Tournament took place from 18th

September to 20th

September. Nearly 41

colleges participated in the event.

The even semester began with the JEM (Journey of Empowered Marians) Programme

for the UG and PG outgoing students for four days from 22.11.2017 – 25.11.2017. Different

programmes like, meditation, psychology, Interview Skills, group discussions and awareness

programmes likeCyber Crime andviolation against womenwere dealt with by various

personalities like, Dr.G. Stella Beatrice Nirmala,Dr. Sivasailam, Professor Vimal Jerald from

St. Joseph‟s College, TrichyandAdvocate Sornalatha, fromThoothukudiand Mr. Partheepan,

Inspector of Police, Thoothukudi.

The Season of Advent was spiritually observed. The whole campus was decked with

Christmas fest. A Christmas Sales Day was organized on 15.12.17. Dr. S.D. Ponseelan,

Managing Director Abi Group of Companies, Thoothukudi declared the Sales Day open and

encouraged the students who were trying hard to earn profit out of their sales by buying

things from the student‟s stalls. Students donated the profit from the sales to the management

to be distributed to the poor and the needy.

19th

December 2017 was celebrated as Prayer Day for the Marian Family with a view

to prepare the Staff and the Students for the Nativity of Christ. A Retreat was arranged for the

catholic staff and students.Rev. Fr. Kennedy,Rev. Fr. Johnson, Retreat Team,

Palayamkottai,Rev. Fr. Sundar, Catholic Mission, Kumbakonam presided over the

retreats.The Christmas Day Celebration was held on 22nd

December 2017, at 4.00 p.m. in

front of the college chapel. Rev. Dr. Fr. Rolington VF was the Chief Guest. He delivered the

Christmas message on the joy of loving, sharing and caring.Hafiz. K.A. Abdul Alim, Chief

Preacher and Arabic Master, Jamia Masjid and Mr. R. BalaMurugan, Manager, Indian

Medical Association were the Guests of Honour.

Pongal, was celebrated on 12.1.2018 in the campus.The celebration reiterated the

importance of the farmers who provide food for us and also of the necessity to safeguard

farmers and protect nature. The significant traditional folk dances like „Thappattam‟,

Oyilattam and Karakattam were performed by the students.

On 26th

January 2018 Republic Day was eventualised with Mrs. Mariammal, Sanitary

Assistant of St. Mary‟s College as chief guest and Ms. S. Vinnarasi, Silver Medalist, Special

Olympics, Los Angeles as Guest of Honour.

The 70th

Annual Sports Meet was celebrated on 2nd

February 2018. Dr.Alby John

Vargese, Commissioner, Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation presided over the

ceremony and Dr.Gopika Rajeev Alby graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.

The annual Interdepartmental Fine Arts celebration, “The Marian Art Fest 2017-

2018” was held in the college premises on 6th

and 7th

Rahul B.A., Assistant Director, Chennai, presided over the Inaugural Ceremony. Thiru S.

Magesh B.A., Actor, Chennai and Tmty. PurnimaArumugam, Edify Solutions, Thoothukudi

were the Guests of Honour.Altogether 22 various competitions, including 8 On- stage and 14

Off-Stage events, were conducted.The Department of English had secured the maximum

number of points and bagged the Over-All Shield in the Marian Art Fest 2017-2018.

An Intercollegiate Cultural Fest, Jubilo 2018 was organized on 8th

February to mark

the glorious 70-year journey of St. Mary‟s. More than 15 college in and around Thoothukudi,

Tirunelveli and Madurai participated in this cultural fiesta.Vijay TV Super Singer famous Mr.

Irwin Victoria graced the occassion.A.P.C Mahalaxmi College for Women secured the

maximum number of points and won the Over All Shield.

Department of English

The department of English organised a Faculty Development Workshop on „Learner-

Centred Pedagogy‟ from June 19.06.2017 to 21.06.2017. The following were the

resource persons: Dr.C.Praveen, Assistant Professor of English, Govt. College of

Teacher Education, Trivandrum, Dr. John Love Joy, Assistant Professor of English,

St.Joseph‟s College, Trichy, Dr.Balasaraswathi, Assistant Professor of English,

St.Xavier‟s College of Education, Palayamkottai.

On 04.09.2017, the department organised a one day International Seminar on

“Cultural Studies: Literatures of Identity”. Dr. S.A Thameemul Ansari, Professor of

Linguistics, University of Jazan, Saudi Arabia, Dr. A. Ragu Antony, Associate

professor of English, V.O.C College, Thoothukudi and Dr. S. Mohamed Haneef,

Head, Department of English, SadakathullaAppa College (Autonomous), Tirunelveli,

were the resource persons of the day.

On 31.01. 2018, the department organised an Intercollegiate Literary Competitions on

„Romantic Age‟. Verse Writing, Painting, Literary Parade and Literary Quiz were

conducted. More than fifteen colleges participated in the event. St. John‟s College

(Self-finance), Palayamkottai won the overall shield.

Department hosted the International Seminar on the title “Indo-African Cultural

Interface” on 2.08. 2017. Dr. B. Maria John, Former Head & Associate Professor

of History, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University gave the inaugural and key-note

address. Mr. Fortunato Fernando, from Mozambique, Africa delivered the Chief

Guest address. Dr. Lakshmi, Head & Associate Professor of History, Sri

Meenakshi College for Women, Madurai, Dr. Gowthaman, Assistant Professor of

Law, Government Law College, Trichy chaired the other sessions. Dr. Jockim,

Assistant Professor of English, St. Xavier‟s College, Palayamkottai gave the

valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the participants. Staff and

students from various colleges attended the seminar.

International Seminar on the topic, “Trends in Tamil Literary Works” was

conducted by Department of History and Tamil in collaboration with Sulthan Idris

Educational University, Malaysia and Semmoodhai Pathipagam, Chennai on

03.02.2018 in St. Mary‟s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi. Samikannu

Jebamani Issak Samuel, Associate Professor, Sulthan Itris Educational University,

Malaysia chaired the session.

International Seminar on “Global Climate Change- Current Trends and

Management” was conducted on 23.09.2017. The resource persons were Dr.

Patrick Pancras, Physical Scientist, ORD, US EPA he spoke on “Challenges in Air

Quality Monitoring and Management” Dr.J.Mary Gladis, Reader, Department of

Chemistry, Indian institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), ISRO,

Thiruvananthapuram spoke on “Degradation of Natural Ecosystem: Innovations

for Resilience”

Dr. Glory Associate Professor of Botany Organized a National Seminar on

Academic and Research Integrity in the Digital World held at St. Mary‟s College

(Autonomous), Thoothukudi on 9.12.2017

Department of Psychology

Awareness Workshop on Life for Living was conducted on 08.09.17

With relevance to the “World Suicide Prevention Day” on 10.9.17, the

Department organized an Awareness Workshop to develop positivity among the

students. Dr. Sivasailam, Psychiatrist was delivered a lecture on the topic

„Vaalkai Vaalvatharkae‟. The students of the psychology department performed a

mime on the topic suicide prevention.

The Department organized the First International Seminar on „The Joy of Living-

A Psychological Perspective‟. This international seminar was organized to

emphasize the theme of the 70th

Jubilee year celebration and the year of joy. The

key note address on the topic „Joy of living‟ was delivered by Rev. Fr. Wilson,

Director, Anugraha Counselling Centre, Dindigul. Session-1 was handled by Mr.

Antony Navis Amarnath, Counsellor and Psychotherapist, PACFA, Australia, on

the topic „Shining from within‟. Sessio-2 was headed by Dr. Rowena, Psychiatrist,

on the topic „Overcoming negativity with positivity‟. The Valedictory session was

presided by Mr. Yuvaraj, HOD, Department of Psychology, MSU, Tirunelveli. He

enlightened the participants on the topic „Emotional Intelligence‟.

School of Physical Sciences

Department of Chemistry

Two day National Conference on “Green Chemistry for Clean Environment”

(G2CE-2017) was organized by the Department of Chemistry, on 07.12.2017 and

08.12.2017 in the college auditorium. Resource persons were Dr. P.Thanikaivelan,

Ph.D.,Associate Professor & Principal Scientist, CSIR-Central Leather Research

Institute , Adaiyar , Chennai , and Mr.K.Shivaramakrishnan, Research Scholar,

IIT Chennai were the special invitees. The Souvenir was released by Dr. P.

Thanikaivelan, Ph.D., and the Dr.Sr. Jessie Fernando received the first copy.

Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. P. Thanikaivelan. He made the students to

feel the impact of conventional methods and the need for newer green techniques

to save the mother earth. He insisted the students to plant trees in order to save

the environment. Dr. P. Thanikaivelan, Associate Professor, CSIR-Central

Leather Research Institute shared his research expertise on the topic “Application

of Green Chemistry Tools for Cleaner and Sustainable Leather Manufacture".

Mr.K.Shivaramakrishnan Healthcare Technology Innovation Center, IIT Madras

gave a talk on “A Walk Through On Energy Models , New Trends and Future

Measures. The presentation of research papers was chaired by Dr.C.Vedhi,

V.O.Chidambaram College, Thoothukudi. On the second day Dr.Srinivasa

Natarajan, Framework Solids Laboratory, Solid State and Structural Chemistry

Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore delivered a lecture on New Green

Pigments for External Applications and the effect of synthetic dyes on the

environment. Dr. Paulraj Mosae Selvakumar, Karunya University, Coimbatore

gave a talk on “Green Chemistry: The Art of Achieving peace and Sustainable

Development”. He insisted that green chemistry is a revolutionary philosophy that

seeks to unite government, academic and industrial communities by placing more

emphasis on tending to environmental impacts at the earliest stage of innovation

and invention that leads to sustainable development and peace among the

communities in the earth. Dr.Sr. Jessie Fernando, Secretary, delivered the

Valedictory address. Prizes were distributed for the best paper presentations.

School of Computing Sciences

Department of Mathematics

A two day instructional workshop on LaTeX was held on 21.09.2017 and

22.09. 2017. The final year students and research scholars participated in this

workshop. Dr.M.Sattanathan, Assistant Professor of Einstien College of

Engineering, Dr.S.Raja Assistant Professor of SCAD College of Engineering and

Dr.N.Mohammed Rilwan, Assistant Professor of Sadakathullah Appa College were

the resource persons. The workshop provided hands-on experience on LaTeX and

Beamer Presentation.

The department organised a one day International Conference on 11.01.2018 . Dr.

Paul Manuel , Kuwait University, Kuwait , Dr. Sr. K. A. Germina , Central University

of Kerala , Rev. Dr. Fr. M. Albert William SJ , Loyola Research Institute , Chennai

and Dr. A. Lourdusamy , St. Xavier‟s College , Palayamkottai, were the resource

persons. The resource persons delivered a lecture on "Applications of Mathematics

"and the research scholars presented their research papers. Students from various

colleges actively participated in this Conference.

Bridge Course was conducted from 28.06.2017 - 30.06 2017 with the view to bridge the

gap between the school and college level of learning among the freshers. A total of 544

students were divided into 9 groups and the assigned staff helped the students to promote

interest in the English Language Skills. The Bridge Course specially helped them to

communicate freely and enabled them to overcome the initial inhibition and boosted their

September 2017, the department of English organised a one day International

Seminar on “Cultural Studies: Literatures of Identity”. Dr. S.A Thameemul Ansari,

Professor of Linguistics, University of Jazan, Saudi Arabia, Dr. A. Ragu Antony,

Associate professor of English, V.O.C College, Thoothukudi and Dr. S. Mohamed

Haneef, Head, Department of English, SadakathullaAppa College (Autonomous),

Tirunelveli, were the resource persons of the day.

On 31st January 2018, the department of English organised an Intercollegiate Literary

Competitions on „Romantic Age‟. Verse Writing, Painting, Literary Parade and Literary

Quiz were conducted. Students from twelve colleges pooled in showcase their talent. St.

John‟s college (Self-finance), Palayamkottai proved their mettleand won the overall

shield.


Dr. Bala Shanmuga Devi, Associate Professor of English, A.P.C Mahalakshmi College,

PROGRAMME REPORT

Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai sponsored

In-service training to the Secondary Grade Science Teachers in Government Schools of

Thoothukudi District from 28.08.2017 to 01.09.2017 (5 days) was organized by PG and

Research Department of Zoology, St.Mary‟s College (Autonomous) Thoothukudi.

In this programme 50 Secondary Grade Science Teachers from Government Schools of

Thoothukudi district viz., Karungulam, Kayathar, Pudhur, Kovilpatti, Vilathikulam,

Alwarthirunagari, Tuticorin urban, Tiruchendur, Srivaikundam, Ottapidaram, Sathankulam,

Pudhukottai and Udangudi blocks were participated. The inaugural function was held at

9.30 a.m. on 28.082017 and Dr. R.D. Thilaga, Associate Professor and Head of the

Department of Zoology and coordinator welcomed the gathering Dr. Sr. Alphonse Roselin

Mary the Principal of the college offered the felicitation Dr. A. Elezabeth Mary, Associate

Professor of Zoology proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. R.D. Thilaga, Co-ordinator of the

programme briefed about the 5 days in-service programme and she stated that, teacher is a

lifelong learner. The teaching fraternity has to keep abreast with the ever changing

technology and mindset of the students. She also stated that the training programme will

pave the way for refreshing the teaching efficiency of the teachers. The training manual of

the programme was released by the principal and received by the AEEO Mr. Muniasamy of

Thoothukudi District. He also addressed the participants and asked them to grab the

opportunity given to them. The training programme was planned in such a way that two

invited talks in the morning session from 9.45 a.m to 1.15 p.m. with a 15 minutes tea break.

The important topics from 6th

to 8th

standard science syllabus of the school curriculum,

other current areas like environmental science (EVS), Information and Communication

Technology (ICT), internet usages in science teaching were covered by highly qualified and

experienced faculty members for the benefit of the teacher participants. In the evening also

one session of invited talks and after that relevant experiments and demonstrations models

were arranged in the laboratories of physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and computer

science departments of our college.

The chief educational officer Dr. A. Anitha visited the programme on 31.08.2017 in the

morning and addressed the participants on the importance of this training programme. She

appreciated the programme schedule and the infrastructure of the institution and asked the

teacher participants to make use of the golden opportunity to grow well in the field of

science.The valedictory function was held at 4.10 pm on 01.09.2017 in the conference hall

of the college. Ms. S. Jesily Prof. Zoology welcomed the gathering. The principal Dr. Sr.

Alphonse Roselin Mary was the chief guest of the function and delivered the valedictory

address. The training certificates along with the attendance certificates were distributed to

all the participants. At the end of the programme, few participants gave feed back Dr. R.D.

Thilaga, the co-ordinator proposed the vote of thanks. The training programme was

concluded successfully.

On 31.07.2017 the microbiology association meeting was conducted in the auditorium

at 2.30 pm. Dr. M. Lucy Nirmal Medona, Associate Professor of Microbiology,

Government Thoothukudi Medical college was invited as the resource person. She

gave a lecture on “Fungal diseases of women”, the lecture was really useful and our

students were enlightened about the occurrence of fungal diseases, which a woman

can face in her life. Ms. A. Maria Heartina Adlin Vaz, Assistant Professor,

The Department Of Psychology

The Psychology Department had organized a Teachers Day Celebration in the

department on 05.09.17. The celebration started with a Prayer Song, followed by the

Feedbacks about the teachers by the students individually. After this, sharing of

personal experiences of „The Best Teacher‟ was done both by the students and the

teachers. Following this, a debate was organized on the essential characteristic of an

ideal teacher. This program was presided by Dr. S. Jeya Bharathi, Head, Department

of Psychology and Mrs. S. Rohini, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology.

The Association Minutes was read by the Secretary Ms. Vadhana. The program ended

with the college anthem.

With relevance to the World Mental Health Day that is observed on 10.10.17, the

Psychology Department observed the Mental Health Awareness Week from 09.10.17

to 14.10.17. Various activities were organized during the college interval to stress the

importance of mental health and offered training to promote mental health. The

programs organized and executed by Dr. S. Jeya Bharathi, Head, Psychology

Department and Mrs. S. Rohini, Assistant Professor, Psychology Department were:

PSYCHOLOGY ASSOCIATION MEETING

(24.10.17)

The Psychology Association Meeting was organized by the Psychology Department

on 24.10.17 at the Department. The resource person was Dr. Rowena, Psychiatrist. The

meeting started at 12.30 pm and lasted for one hour. The resource person enlightened the

students on the value of the subject Psychology and its various scopes for employment.

She also stressed on the importance of value based education and tipped the students on

learning effectively. It was an interactive session and the students found it highly

motivating and useful. The meeting started with a prayer song by Ms. Vadhana and Ms.

Sneha. The resource person was welcomed by Dr. S. Jeya Bharathi, Head, Department of

Psychology and the session was concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Mrs. R. Rohini,

Assistant Professor, Psychology Department followed with the college anthem.

II M.Sc students attended two days Seminar at Kamaraj College on 21.08.2017 and

22.08.2017 on the “Application of Nanotechnology in Medicine”.

The II M. Sc III B. Sc and I B.Sc students along with 6 faculty members visited Kalakad

Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve on 23.09.2017 in Tirunelveli district. We started our journey

from our college campus at 6 a.m. in the morning. First, we visited Government Aqua seed

farm at Manimuthar. They explained about the different types of fish culture, seed

production, feed farming, etc. Then we visited Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. The visit was

really useful We understood the importance of forest ecosystem, natural resources and to

conserve our resources for future generation. Really we enjoyed the trip .and we returned

home by 8.00pm.

St.Mary‟s college on 11.12.2017 in the auditorium Inspector S.Vinayagam deliver the

speech. The microbiology students were participated.

The Christmas day celebration was held on 22.12.2017. Our students actively

participated in Christmas day tableau and decorated crib in Madona block.

The microbiology students participated the international seminar on awareness on

epidemic diseases held on 13.02.2018 at Sadakathulla Appa College, Thirunelveli

district our PG student S.Iswarya won the 1st prize and R.K.Deepalaxmi won the 2

prize for paper presentation. For UG student Y.Deekshita won the 1st prize and Muthu

Department of Manonmanium Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli on 28.9.17. The guest

lecture was on the topic “ Opportunities for Psychology in India”. It was presided over by

Mr. Yuvaraj, Assitant Professor and HOD/ic, Department of Psychology, MSU. The chief

guest was Dr. Suresh, Scientist, TRDO. He gave an insight about the various career

opportunities that the field of Psychology offers for the psychology students. The program

started with a Prayer song and was concluded after the Questioning Session with the

National Anthem.

“Contemporary Technologies: Prospects and Challenges for Psychological Well being”,

The Forum motivated to send Major Research Project Proposal to TNSCST.

Through this Dr.R.D.Thilaga, HOD, Department of Zoology, submitted research

proposal on “Exploring the feasibility of utilizing Mollascs from trash into

quality edible products” .

The project was sanctioned with financial support of Rs.4,05,000/- by TNSCST

on 17.10.2017.

National Service Scheme

The four NSS units of our college offer an exposure to the stark realities of societal life.

This academic year, all the 4 NSS units involved in planting trees in and outside of the

college campus with the view of protecting our environment and establishing a Green India.

Programmes like cleaning “Muthu Nagar” beach, Tharuvai sports ground and Awareness

programme on “World Consumer Day” were organized in collaboration with the members

of Walkers Club, Lions Club and with the Consumer Club. 46 of our students under the NSS

Unit no. 66 attended a seven day N.S.S. camp at Silverpuram under the guidance of the

Programme Officer Dr. Sonal in February 2018.

Priya, Permanent Instructors (PI Staff) and Girl Cadet‟s Instructor (GCI). The regular

parade is conducted on Mondays and Thursdays from 2.30 to 4.30 pm. This academic year

our NCC cadets attended various camps and conducted many awareness programmes and

social service activities. They actively participated in the Republic day celebrations in our

college.

This year began with the camp organised by our battalion, 3TN Girls BN,

NCC. Fifty cadets from III & II year NCC cadets attended CATC at Saradha College,

Tirunelveli from 25.04.17 to 04.05.17. Next ten of our cadets participated in Nilgris

Trekking Camp, Ooty from 01.05.17 to 08.05.17 and had won second prize in singing

competition.

Twenty five cadets attended a camp held at James College of Engineering,

Navalkaadu from 28.08.17 to 08.09.17 and ten got selected for next level RD Camp. Eight

cadets attended RDC – IUC this year. Basic Leadership Camp (BLC) trains students to

become good leaders and citizens of our country. Fifteen of our II year NCC cadets got

selected for BLC, Tanjore from 13.07.17 to 22.07.17 and among them three cadets got

selected for the next level camp, All India Leadership Camp (ALC), Agra.

Then twenty II year cadets attended CATC cum RDC at NTA, Idayarpatti from

28.07.17 to 06.08.17 and proved their talents in competitions and won many prizes. Twelve

of our II year cadets got selected for TSC selection camps held at Madurai from 04.06.17 to

13.07.17 and seven of them attended TSC – IUC. Next, Sgt.Gowsalya of III Maths,

Sgt.Kalieswari and Sgt.Princy of III History attended NIC – II at Warangal from 13.11.17 to

24.11.17 and our directorate stood third in the camp. Followed by twenty of our II year

cadets attended NTA, Idayarpatti from 28.07.17 to 06.08.17 and won second prize in

cultural competitions.

Cpl.Nivetha of III Commerce attended Basic Mountaineering Course at Uttarkand in

the month of November and completed the course successively with A Grade. UO Leema

Mano Victoria of III English and Sgt Gowsalya of III Maths attended SNIC camp conducted

at NER region in the month of January 2018 and won many prizes in various competitions.

Apart from their strenuous training programmes and camps, they have also done

many social service activities and actively involved themselves in various awareness

programmes like usage of e cards, blood donation, water conservation and protection of

women against social evils. They have also performed the guard of honour and piloting to

the chief guests of our college functions. Finally, on 31st January, 2018 they participated a

one day training programme for their “B” and “C” certificate examinations. Thirty three II

year NCC cadets appeared for their “B” certificate and twenty III year cadets appeared for

their “C” certificate examination in the month of February, 2018.

Centres for Excellence

Centre for Human Excellence:

The Centre for Human Excellence helps the students to transform their weakness into

strengths, which will add richness and energy to the way they live. A number of sessions are

conducted to develop awareness about their behaviour. Regular moral and catechism classes

are conducted. Experienced counsellers are there to guide our students.

The quality of life is shaped with a help of foundation courses offered like Value Based

Education, Yoga, Personality development, Environmental Science.

They are provided with ample opportunities to discover more about themselves. Many

sessions are conducted by our Servite sisters, our teachers and Rev. Fathers and Retreat

Teams from various places to enrich them in their spiritual life. Regularly on every first

Friday, Holy mass is conducted.

Campus Ministry

The Holy Mass, celebrated on the 23rd

of June 2017 in the college chapel was organized

by the Department of Zoology. Rev. Fr. Rollington, Lionstown Parish Priest, VF of

Thoothukudi diocese celebrated the mass. The day was special as it was the feast of

Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit Mass held on the 7th

of July 2017 in the college chapel was organized by

the Department of BBA and SSC English. Rev. Fr. Britto Vincent Principal, St. Xavier‟s

College, Palayamkottai celebrated the mass.

The Holy Mass held on the 21st of July 2017 in the college chapel was celebrated as

thanks giving mass on the occasion of 70th

birthday of our college. The mass was

organized by the Department of English. Rev. Bishop Ivan Ambrose, Thoothukudi

Diocese celebrated the mass. Rev. Fr. Raja Parish Priest, St. Joseph‟s Church, Cruzpuram

accompanied him.

The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Snows Basilica on the 29th

of July 2017 was undertaken

by the staff and the students of St. Mary‟s college along with the staff and students of St.

Aloysius Higher Secondary School, a sister concern of the Servite sisters, starting from

the Sacred Heart Cathedral to Our Lady of Snows campus. The mass was celebrated by

Rev. Fr. Julians Machado, accompanied by Rev. Fr. Raja and Rev. Fr. Benjamin

D‟Souza.

The Thanksgiving Mass, for the occasion of the retirement function of our office staff Mrs.

Arul Ravindran was celebrated on the 29th

of August 2017 in the college chapel was

The first Friday Mass of the New Year 2018 celebrated on the 5th

college chapel was organized by the Department of Economics, both regular and SSC.

A seminar for the Catholic students was conducted on “ The importance of Holy Bible”

and for Non-Catholics on “The Purpose of Life” on the 14th

of February 2018. The

Fr. Venice Ilangumaran- Director – Pastoral Centre- Tuticorin and Fr. George

Six students from various departments of our college participated in the “Grace Day

Program” which was organized by St. Joseph‟s College, Trichirappalli dated on 16 -18th

February accompanied by two non-teaching Staff of our College.

AICUF (All India Catholic University Federation)

Our College AICUFers participated Human Chain Rally against the Sterlite company

on the 18th of July 2017. 100 students participated in this protest for an hour by

pronouncing slogans.

In August 2017 , the AICUF secretary of our college, Miss. Rishika and four other

students from various colleges went on a visit to a Nuclear Power Station at

Koodankulam. They interacted with the workers and the surrounding civilians and came

to know that the station not only consumes electricity but also making nuclear bombs

with the wastes, which has harmful consequences to their living place.

A street play was conducted on the 6th of September 2017 demonstrating the

disappointment faced by Ms. Anitha in the NEET exam and the hardships faced by Ms.

Christy Prathipa, inorder to create an awareness about the difficulties faced by women in

our soceity. Later our principal, Dr.Sr.Alphonse Roseline Mary gave a speech about the

women's role for a better society.

The World Food Day and Diwali were celebrated on the 16th

October 2017. Mr. Raja

Ram, a social worker, was the Chief Guest. The AICUF students portrayed the

importance of helping the downtrodden by a skit, dance and a song. The Principal, Dr. Sr.

Alphonse Roseline Mary, gave a speech emphasising the same.

Around 3000 students from our college, went on a rally, on Saturday, the 25th

November

2017, to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The rally was flagged off by Ms. Vijayalakshmi, Sub Inspector of North Police Station,

Tuticorin. It started from St. Mary‟s College at 2.30 P.M and ended at The Lady of Snows

Church. The programme was organized to support girl children, and all the women and

create awareness on gender equality, discrimination and violence against women.

The Human Rights day was celebrated on the 9th

December 2017. An inspiring speech

was given by Ms Rajeshwari of II B.Sc. Maths(SSC) about the fundamental human

rights. The AICUF students performed a skit and a song. The Principal, Dr.Sr. Alphonse

Roseline Mary gave a speech emphasising the same.

It was followed by the film analysis. A movie “Thondan” was screened for all I year

students. Unit advisor Sr. Ezhilarasi led the evaluation for that movie. The students felt

the AICUF programs were an eye opener and they made them think about the social

issues prevailing in the society.

The Magis- Socio Spiritual Congress was conducted in Loyala College, Chennai, by the

Jesuit Youth Ministry from 13th

to 15th

January 2018. 12 students of AICUF along with

Dr. Sr. Ezhilarasi actively participated in the program.

On 1st February , the AICUF students had a meeting in the college hostel stage. Sr. Ezhil

Arasi, Ms Sashikala and Ms Initha Rina attended the meeting. Discussion was held on

plants allocated to each group.

On 14th

February 2018 , 25 students of AICUF visited the Lucia Home – the home for

the physically challenged children.

On the 1st of March 2018, 21 AICUF students, along with Mrs. X. Amala Steffi,

Assistant Professor in English, attended a seminar on the present political issues at St.

Xaviers College, Palayamkottai.

The Centre for Job Excellence includes Career Guidance and Placement Cell,

Parents Teachers Association, Guidance and Counselling Cell, Yoga and Meditation

Club, which aim to help students to be more informed about better educational and

career choices. Awareness is also provided about the type of academic and

occupational training needed to succeed in the workplace, and job opportunities that

are associated with their field of interest.

Techniques.

regarding how to appear for the IAS exams.

February 2018, a training programme was given to the students on soft skills by

recruited and joined as part time accountants in Dhana Cars Limited by Mrs.Poornima.

On 26th

February 2018, Mrs. Poornima, placement officer from Edify Solutions

conducted an interview and 20 of our Commerce and BBA departments participated and

10 students were placed in Pearl Honda Company Limited as part time sales executives.

PTA

The inaugural meeting of the Parent Teachers Association for the academic year 2017-

2018 was held on 27.06.2017 in the College Auditorium in the presence of the

administrative members, the Secretary, Principal, Vice-Principal Controller of

Examination and SSC director. The Principal Rev. Dr. Sr. S. Alphonse Roseline Mary

and the Secretary Rev.Dr. Sr. Jessie Fernando gave a talk on the role of Parents in the

holistic development of the students. The Vice Principal Rev. Dr. Sr. A. Arockia Jenicius

Alphonse shared a few words on the rules and regulations of the college. The Controller

of Examinations Dr. J. Dulcy Elizabeth requested the parents to give utmost importance

to their children‟s academic progress.

The second meeting of the Parents Teachers Association was held on 24th

Guidance and Counselling

The college Counselling Forum has been active from the year 2015. Various forms

of counseling is being given to the students according to their needs. Entry counselling, Exit

counselling, Individual counselling, Personal counselling, Parental counselling, Counselling

on Reference, Sports counselling, Pre and Post –Marital counseling etc are some of the forms

of counseling given in our college. Counseling is also given for teaching and non-teaching

staff.

On the 5th of September 2017 the counsellors met the first year Psychology students and

conversed on the topic 'My most valued teacher' to mark the Teacher's Day.

On 9th September 2017 an Awareness Workshop on 'Life for Living' was conducted in

the College Auditorium and was presided by the psychiatrist Dr. Sivasilam.

On 26th September 2017 an International Seminar on 'Joy of Living - A Psychological

Perspective' was conducted in the Conference Hall. Fr. Wilson, Director, Anugraha

Counseling Centre, Mr. Antony Navis Amarnath, Psychotherapist, PCFA, Mr. Yuvaraj

HODi/c, MSU and Dr. Rowena, Psychiatrist were the resource persons.

Mental Health awareness week was observed from 10th October to 14th October 2017 in

the Fatima Hall.

As a part of the JEM program, the Guidance and Counselling club arranged a session on

'Healing the inner child' and was presided over by Dr. Sivasilam, Psychiatrist.

Yoga and Meditation

On June 2017 International day of yoga was celebrated in our indoor stadium Dr. G.

Stella Beatrice Nirmala pranic healing trainer motivated the students to do yoga and that

was followed by four short meditations.

On 11th November 2017 as part of Gem programme on the first day all outgoing students

of the college were trained to do special meditations called Twin Hearts Meditation and

Arch angels meditations.

Special yoga training was organized for teachers by Yoga trainer Mrs.Amutha. The

On 2nd February 2018, the whole college students teaching and non teaching staff in the

open air auditorium meditated together Sr. Mercy Assistant Professor in Computer Science

guided the audience .

The Pranic healing club members were regular in their practices, twice in a week . They all

heal themselves and other after twin hearts meditation which was followed by proper

exercises

Centre for Entrepreneurship And Skill Excellence

The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development of our college aims to promote

the skills of the students and facilitate their industry exposure. It also inculcates skills

which can be the key to competitiveness in the corporate world.

The Entrepreneurship and Skill excellence Centre OF St. Mary‟s College has

organised a Skill Development Programme for III year UG Students on „Photoshop

and AutoCAD‟ from 7.9.2017 to 5.1.2018. 24 students from Economics, Chemistry

Zoology and Botany attended this programme.

An Orientation Programme was organised by Good Ocean Maritime ( Institute of

Logistics), Thoothukudi for three days on 21st , 22nd & 23rd February 2018. Mr.

Ranjit Bolan, Campus Manager of Good Ocean Maritime was the resource person.

Students from different disciplines at St. Mary‟s attended an online Quit India Quiz

Competition before 15 August 2017 to celebrate 75 year of Quit India Movement and 70

year of India‟s independence and won participation certificates.

On 12th Octiber 2017 S. Kalpana Devi of I M.A English and K. Veerachinnammal

of II Physics participated in Cavalier Dr. G. K. Devarajulu Memorial State Level

inter-collegiate quiz 2017 organized by G. Venkataswamy Naidu College, Kovilpatti

and won the fourth prize of a cash award of Rs. 1500.

On 13th October 2017 P. Ramani and P. Priya of I Physics participated in an inter-

collegiate quiz competition for UG students of M. S University organized by V.O.C

On 25 January 2018, an Intracollege Swachh Bharat Quiz competition was

organized at St. Mary‟s College in association with Thoothukkudi city Corporation

The Centre for Women Excellence was established to empower our women students.

This centre aims This Centre functions through Anti Sexual Harassment Cell, Anti

Ragging Cell, Human Rights Forum, Women Cell and Alumni Association in our

college. Guest lectures, seminars, workshops, awareness programmes and other welfare

activities are arranged by the Cells and Forums under this centre to empower women

students.

The Cell organized a meeting on 21st September 2017. Mrs.B.Neelavani , Senior

Advocate in Thoothukudi presided over the meeting. He gave a talk about the Posco

act and awareness about the Women‟s safety. Mr. R. Samuel Benjamin, Sub Judge

Secretary of Distric legal service authority in Thoothukudi, talked about the

Centre for Digital Excellence

The centre for digital excellence has been focusing on the overall technological

development in the campus. It strives hard in equipping our students with enormous

technical knowledge by exposure to the digital environment and in helping them evolve

as global citizens. The centre functions as two teams:

The staff members are making effort to digitize their methods of teaching by means of

creating videos of their lectures. Two staff from each department have been trained

specially for the purpose.

to give every detail of the college, which includes, photos and videos of past events,

notifications of the upcoming events, links to important academic websites, activity

updates of various departments, clubs and forums, the reports of the IQAC etc. Our

Computer Lab, Internet and Digital Notice Board

The campus has 5 computer laboratories - 2 for regular students, 2 for the SSC

students and 1 for official use. Hence we have a total of 160 computers in all the

laboratories. Each department's staff room have a computer system each.

The campus is WiFi enabled with internet available 24x7 CCTV cameras have been

placed throughout the campus to montior the campus activities.

The Digital Notice Board is another milestone in which the happenings of various

Centre for Cultural Excellence

Through the centre for cultural excellence our students are trained in all cultural activities

including dance, drama, orchestra, band etc.

Talentia was held on 14th July at 2.00 P.M to exhibit the talents of I year

students.

The inaugural celebration of the 70 years of jubilant journey, followed by the

cultural fiesta was held on 27th July at 10.30 A.M in the auditorium. Rev.Sr.

Jeyarani, Provincial, Maria Natchatram Province presided over the ceremony.

Our students participated in the inter collegiate competition held at Alagar

public school on 31st August and won the following prizes.

Orchestra

The Marian Orchestra was formed in the year 2015 to enhance the musical talents of

the Marians. The members met frequently to train themselves for the various musical

performances in and outside campus.

On 21st July 2017,the college celebrated its 70

th year Jubilee when the

performance by the orchestra won the admiration of the gathering.

The orchestra team again proved its eminence in the Christmas day celebration

held on the 22nd

of December, 2017 when the music elevated the spirit of the

spectators.

Centre for Service Excellence

The Centre for Service Excellence aims at caring for the underprivileged

coastal women and to address their spoken and unspoken needs.

Our objectives are to create awareness, educate, train and offer supportive

advisory services to individuals in order to facilitate the fulfillment of their desires

through Road Safety Patrol, Red Ribbon Club, Youth Red Cross and Scribes forum.

In order to promote an integrated education among the students, our college

has undertaken Community Development Programme (CDP) for the welfare of the

community. All the second year UG students have to participate in this programme

which is an integral part of the curriculum.

CDP

The Department of English organized a CDP visit to the Bethany Convent and

Nathakulam on the 8th July, 21st of September and the 16th of December

2017 respectively. They ministered to the prison inmates, conducted an

awareness program on the legal problems faced by women and also conducted

eye camp. A total of 100 people participated in the program. Ms.N.Sumathi,

Ms.Mary Manonmani, Ms.Sharon Roque Corerea, Ms.X.Amala Steffi,

Ms.Sophia Philomin, and Ms.Carmel were the staff in charge for the visits.

The Department of History Organized a CDP visit to the Bethany Convent and

Vembar on the 22nd of September and the 14th of October 2017 respectively.

They ministered to the prison inmates and also conducted an awareness

program on Diabetes and Blood Pressure(Apollo Pharmacy). A total of 150

students participated in the program. Dr.S.M.Vimala, Ms. S.Sheela,

Dr.D.Victoria and Ms.RosyDevotta were the staff in charge for the visits.

The Department of Economics organized a CDP visit to Jeeva Nagar on the

16th of September, 14th of October and the 12th of December 2017. They

conducted awareness programs on Banking, Women Protection and Christmas

Celebration respctively. Dr. Amutha was the staff in charge for the visits.

The Department of Mathematics organized a CDP visit to Vembar on the 2nd

of September and the 16th of December 2017. They conducted awareness

programs on Banking, a Survey on toilet facilities and Christmas Celebration

respctively. Dr. J. Arul Jesti, Ms. J. Sahaya Froiline was the staff in charge for

the visits.

The Department of Physics organized a CDP visit to Kombuthurai village and

Anna Colony, Thoothukudi on 21st October, 16th December 2017 and 4th

February 2018. They conducted awareness programs on Dengue, Free Eye

Screening camp and planted saplings. Mrs. Lancy Mrs.Sasikala and Mrs.

Smila was the staff in charge for the visits. About a 100 people from

kombuthurai village and 100 families from Anna Colony participated in the

programs.

The Department of Chemistry organized a CDP visit to Pazhaiyakayal and

Bethany Convent, on 23rd September 2017 and 29th January 2018. They

conducted awareness programs on environmental issues by screening videos.

Dr. Mrs. Sophia and Mrs. B. Dhivya were the staff in charge for the visits.

School and College students participated in the programmes.

The Department of Botany organized a CDP visit to Amali Nagar on 16th and

26th September 2017. They planted trees, cleaned beach, surveyed toilet

facilities, conducted training to use seaweed as fertilizers and making kitchen

garden. Mrs. Jacintha Tamil Malar, Dr. G. Flora and Dr. F. Dayana Lobo were

the staff in charge for the visits.

The Department of Zoology organized a CDP visit to Keezhavaipar and the

Bethany Convent on 14th September 2017 and 30th January 2018. They

conducted awareness programs on food adulteration and ministered to the

prison inmates. Dr. Jemma Hermelin Jessy Diaz and Dr. S.R.T. Sherly were

the staff in charge for the visits

The Department of Computer Science organized a CDP visit to Vellapatti, the

Lucia Centre and the Bethany Convent on 15th July, 13th September and 16th

December 2017. They conducted awareness programs on saving money,

women's education and Christmas Celebration. Mrs. Jothi Mani, Mrs

Gnanathangam, Sr. Shagaya Mercy and Mrs.Andrews Felicita were the staff in

charge for the visits.

The Department of Commerce organized a CDP visit to Dhupaspattion July-

20-2017 and December-18-2017.They organized a Pilot study,data

and people of Tharavaikulam participated in it.

The student volunteers of the RSP unit of our college function efficiently

under the guidance of Mrs. Jacqulaine Leo, Department of English, Mrs. Jane

D‟ Almeida, Department of History and Tourism and, Ms. S. Surya,

Department of English (S.S.C.).

On 22nd

September 2017 Mr. Parthiban, Executive Manager, Pearl Honda

Showroom, Thoothukudi, along with Mrs. Manjula and Mrs. Meknesia, Sales

Executives, Pearl Honda Showroom conducted an awareness programme for

the students on road safety and arranged for free service of two wheelers of

Honda make in the college premises.

On 13th, Mr. Rajkumar, Managing Director, Aravind Automobiles and ASIR

Agency, Thoothukudi visited our college and motivated our students about the

need for two wheelers and the importance of careful driving.

On February 26th

2018 Mr. Gnanaprakasam of William Driving School,

Chidambaranagar, assisted 100 students and a batch of Non Teaching staff

members to obtain L.L.R. Driving Licence. On 1st March all of them went to

the R.T.O. office to get the Learner's Licence. After a month, they will be

getting their permanent licences in stages.

YRC

The meeting of the Youth Red Cross was held on 21st September 2017 under

the presidentship of Dr. Vaseekaran B.I.M., Chairman, IRCS, Thoothukudi District

Branch. He explained the fundamental principles and objectives of Youth Red Cross

and motivated the students to help others during accidents and natural calamities.

Mr. Muthuraj B.E., Secretary, IRCS, Thoothukudi insisted the role of YRC in

promoting humanitarian principles and values. Mr. Vanniyaraja, M.Com, Treasurer,

IRCS, Thoothukudi gave a brief chronology of events of Red Cross Society. Students

enthusiastically participated in the YRC meeting.

First Aid Training Programme was conducted to the YRC students. Dr. Sevvel

Murugan explained human anatomy, the important systems and their functioning in

our body and the need of first aid in case of any injury.

First Aid Training was given to the YRC students by Dr. Vaseekaran B.I.M.,

Chairman, IRCS, Thoothukudi District Branch. He demonstrated the first aid

procedures to be followed in case of bone fracture, burns, acid attack etc and gave

hands on training to the students.

A group of 15 volunteers rendered their services at „May I help you‟ service

centre of Indian Red Cross Society, Thoothukudi Government Hospital from 7.30

A.M to 9. 30 A.M for 15 days (11th December to 25th December 2017). Second batch

of students are doing their service in May I help you centre from 15th February to 1st

March 2018.

Scribes Forum

A Scribe forum is formed to help the visually challenged school students to write their

Quarterly, Half yearly and annual exams. Our college students also actively

participate in the Scribes Forum to enable the visually challenged students of

Caldwell School to write their exams effectively. Moreover students having

proficiency in Tamil and English are separately known and sent to write the exams in

the respective language papers effectively. M.Mahalaxmi, D.Stella Jeya Rubi,

B.Sureka and H.Angel of II B.Com(Corporate), S.Jachin Gomez, Esther Hepsibah

sheri and Antony Arul Maria Thilothana of III B.A. English were sent as wscribes to

write the exams for the physically challenged of the Caldwell School.

Centre for Eco Feminine Excellence

Being eco-friendly is not only a social responsibility of the corporate, but also of all

education institutes. It is important for the institutions to go green not only from the point

of view of protecting the environment but also from teaching the youth the importance of

maintaining ecological balance and ensuring sustainable development. The mission of this

centre is to offer women a new way to care for themselves, beyond personal health. We

eco friendly materials, maintain cleanliness, health and hygiene through the Centre for Eco

feminine Excellence.

Women, having blessed with the gift of reproducing and creating new life possess the

inborn feminine principles of caring, sustaining, nurturing and preserving life. The centre

aims at utilizing the energy and power of the young women to create a balance between

creation and depletion of resources and strives to prohibit the usage of hazardous elements

in and around the campus

World Ozone Day Celebration

On 16.09.2017 the center conducted competitions like Essay writing, painting and

slogan writing for the students.

Health & Hygiene Club

The Health and Hygiene club conducted a Pharma Awareness program on 30.06.2017.

Mr. Stephen , Junior Excecutive, Apollo Pharmacy , Chennai, was the resource person.

On 08.12.2017, a team of members from the Management, Centre For Eco Feminine

Excellence, non-teaching staff and Student council went to Keeriparai, Kanniyakumari

Dt.,affected the worst by the “Ockhi” cyclone. About 300 relief packages were

distributed to them. We were guided by the local parish priest Rev. Fr. David, C.M.F to

reach the needy people.

Library the Gate Way to knowledge has ample collection of around 48,422

books and 84 periodicals to enrich and empower knowledge to the user

community.

Library has switched over to new commercial software named MODERNLIB

from Nulagum automation software for speedy transactions through their

smart ID cards.

Digital Gate register has been implemented to record the user statistics.

Renewal of Journals and N-LIST for the academic year has been carried out.

User ID and password has been generated for all the staff members to access

NDL (National Digital Library)

Book exhibition has been tentative planned during second week of March,

2018 as off now 150 books are added into the library.

Dept. of Library and Research forum jointly orgainsed a National Seminar of

9th

Dec, 2017 on the topic „Academic and Research Integrity in the Digital

World‟ around 200 research scholars and staff members benefited out of the

seminar.

The management has fabricated an Air conditioned digital wing to access

digital materials. Purchase of printer and wooden cupboards for the library is

on the progress.

Dr.K.Vinitha has been conferred with ‘Bharat Vidya Ratan Award’ by

International Business council –New Delhi

2 Research scholars have been awarded Ph.D degree in the month of July and

October 2017 under the guidance of Dr.K.Vinitha, Librarian of the college.

With the dedicated efforts of the management, teaching and non-teaching faculty and

the students of the institution, St.Mary‟s has achieved a phenomenal growth during the

academic year 2017-18. I am sure that their continuous dedicated support will steer the
