In June, 159 seniors graduated with over $19 million in scholarship money, a new school record. There were 44 in National Honor Society, 37 Illinois State Scholars, and 60 Marian Senior Scholars. Jeremiah Lindquist, Timothy Phillips, and Caitlyn Prisching attained perfect attendance.

Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Rich Hoover ’84 has announced the 2013 Sports Hall of Fame winners. Individual winners are Dan Freund ’61, Colleen Nilson ’03, Brittany Nobilio ’04, and

Coach Tom Parker. Friend of Marian winners are Mary Ann (Stilling) Martinez ’66, and the late Bob Kies. Team winners are the 2003 Boys Golf Team and the 2003 Boys Soccer Team. The induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the varsity Homecoming game on Friday, September 26. Family, friends, and classmates are invited to attend. Congratulations to all.

Pat McAndrews received his Bachelors from Loras College and Law Degree with honors from Creighton. He practices in McHenry County and belongs to the Knights of Columbus. For many years Pat was on the Marian Central Council of Administration and Executive Council, and is a former member of the McHenry County Bar Association Board of Governors. He resides in McHenry with Mary Lou and sons John ’06 and Justin ‘04 are Marian alums.

Class valedictorian, Ron Nye, earned a B.A., with honors, from Notre Dame and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He is the Managing Partner of the Chicago Office of Major, Lindsey & Africa, the largest legal search and consultancy firm in the world. Ron is the Board President of Fellowship Housing, a charitable organization based in Hoffman Estates helping homeless mothers find shelter. He resides in South Barrington with his wife, Natasha, and three sons.

Erin Smith is a Human Resource executive with Avanade, Inc. a global IT professional services company. She is the Village of Lakewood President and has extensive community service. Class valedictorian, Erin, earned her B.S. at North Central College, and M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Erin and husband Mike reside in Lakewood and are the parents of Marian alums; Brittani ’06, Morgan ’08, Rachael ’10 and son Keith, a senior at Crystal Lake Central.

The Hurricane Award program annually honors individuals who have contributed outstanding service over the years to Marian Central, thus advancing the school’s mission and adding quality to the Marian Central experience. This year’s winners are Leo and Jean Cooney, Don Kaminski, and Ed Dschida.

Leo (deceased) and Jean Cooney have been continuous supporters of Marian for decades. Their particular interests

were providing tuition for several students through a scholarship program and supporting three Capital Campaigns.

Don Kaminski has been involved with the Fathers Club Bingo program, spearheading the football pavilion construction and the tailgate dinners for home football games. He still sells pull tabs on bingo nights. Ed Dschida ran the food service for the Bingo Program for many years and still supports the Bingo Program.

The Hurricane Award winners were recognized during halftime of the first home football game on August 29.

42ND ANNUAL ATHLETIC BENEFIT -OVER $28K RAISEDAfter a rain delay, the Athletic Benefit at Crystal Woods Golf Club on June 18 raised over $28K for equipment and uniforms for the sports teams.

The low gross winners were Scott Smith ’94, Mike Berndt ’96, John Georgy, and Steve Mertel ’96. Brian Jakowbowsky had the longest drive and Tony Biell had the longest putt. Nikole Burke won the 50/50 drawing.

A putting contest sponsored by American Community Bank & Trust had Marian alum, Rick Draffkorn ’89, working the event. One of the successful putters, Tom McCabe, won the IPad drawing.

BRUCKER IN 12TH YEAREd Brucker starts his 12th year as Marian’s Head Football Coach with a 94-31 record. Fifteen of the losses were to eventual State Champions and four losses were to eventual State Runner Ups. Ed has seen 12 of his players recruited to D-1 colleges, including four quarterbacks in a row. The current quarterback, Billy Bahl ‘15, has committed to Miami of Ohio after receiving 14 offers. Billy follows in the footsteps of Chris Streveler ’13 (Minnesota), Ben Krol ‘11(Eastern Illinois), and Jon Budmayr ’09 (Wisconsin).

THANK YOU MR . MAVEUSChuck Maveus started at Marian in 1998 and retired this past May. He served as the Dean of Students and Activities Director. In addition, during Christmas, Spring Break, and summer vacations, Mr. Maveus put on his “painters hat” and painted for Mr. Etten, the Director of Maintenance.

After serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Mr. Maveus earned his BS in Education and MS in Education and Administration from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. His career in education spanned 43 years and he will now spend more time with his family including six grandchildren, and golfing.

For the past 16 years at Marian, Chuck Maveus did what he loved best . . . “striving to make a difference in the lives of our young adults.” Thank you Mr. Maveus, and best of luck in your retirement.

CAMPUS UPGRADESAs part of the Transitioning to the 20’s Strategic Plan, there were many physical improvements over the summer. The cafeteria has new ceilings, lighting, walls, and floor tile replacing the 1959 items. The bleachers in the aux gym from 1959 were removed and replaced with bleachers meeting the current safety codes. Parking lot and exterior lighting was replaced with energy efficient LED fixtures. Also, new servers have been added along with other technology upgrades.

SPRING ALL CONFERENCE ATHLETESThe following athletes from Marian Central were named All-Suburban Christian Conference: baseball, Sal Rodriquez and Corte Trebacz; girls soccer, Victoria Girolamo and Jacqueline Guilbeault; softball, Jacqueline Chmiel, Michaela Faunce, Jennifer Geisey, Emily Miller and Sarah Schaefer; and girls track and field, Brenna Koch.

IHSA HONORS MARIAN ATHLETIC DIRECTORMarian’s Athletic Director, Drew Potthoff, was awarded the IHSA Distinguished Service Award in June. Drew has worked in education for 36 years and has served as president of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association for two years.

“We hired Drew a year ago and one of the reasons we hired him was because of his experience as an athletic director in McHenry County and his awareness of statewide issues.” Marian superintendent Tom Landers said. “We wanted an experienced administrator and obviously he is one.”

CLASS OF 1966PAT WIRTZ, McHenry, was the Parade Marshal for McHenry Fiesta Days in July. Pat retired from McHenry East after 40 years in education, but remains busy as Vice President of the

McHenry Area Historical Society, Chairman of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission, and Chairman of the McHenry High School Hall of Fame Committee.

CLASS OF 1970MARY JEAN (WEBER) AND PHIL KIEFER, McHenry, are enjoying their first grandchildren. Their daughter, Katie, and husband, T.J. Riley welcomed Kiefer Thomas on March 20, 2014. Their son, Matt and wife, Lauren, welcomed McKenna Malone on April 4, 2014.

CLASS OF 1988MICHELE (MARTINEZ) WINGATE, Madison, WI, was recently appointed Customer Experience Director at American Family Insurance. She has a B.A. from UW-Madison and an M.A. from UW-Milwaukee.

CLASS OF 1990ADAM ZANCK, Woodstock, is the head coach for Marian’s track and field team.

CLASS OF 1998COLLEEN (COTE) SLAMA, Henderson, NV, lives with her husband, Jayson and their two sons. Griffen was born January of 2012 and Hudson was born June of 2013. Colleen is the daughter of Tom (’74) and Lisa (Huemann) Cote (’75).

MELISSA (NEIS) WITTENBORN, Chicago, is Vice President at Parr Insurance Brokerage. She majored in Art at Illinois Wesleyan University and earned an Executive MBA at Notre Dame in 2013.

CLASS OF 2000NICHOLAS PARTIPILO, Chicago, is a partner at the Chicago Law Firm of Simon and McClosky.

PETE ROCKERS, Woodstock, finished his PhD at Harvard, and is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health at Boston University. Along with teaching, he continues to do consulting work in global health.

CLASS OF 2002JOHN CARRUTHERS, Chicago, is a published author who has been a guest on The Today Show. His book, ManBQue: Meat. Beer. Rock and Roll delves into the history, art, and camaraderie that is barbeque grilling. He’s been approached for a second book option and has recently filmed a pilot for a cooking show.

SARA GUDERYAHN, Chicago, spent 10 years in Washington D.C. working for Senator Durbin and with the Obama Administration across a variety of education policies. She currently runs the Midwest Region of Education Pioneers.

CLASS OF 2003MELISSA LEROY, St. Louis, MO, graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and earned a second degree in Nursing. She currently works at St. John Mercy Hospital as an Operating Nurse.

CLASS OF 2004FATHER ANDREW DIETZ, Crystal Lake, was ordained to the diocesan priesthood June 28, 2014 at the Cathedral of St. Peter. Andrew is the brother of Amy Deitz, religion teacher at Marian, Anna Deitz ’06 and Aaron Deitz ’11.

MICHAEL HEIDEMANN, McHenry, is a WGN radio producer.

CLASS OF 2005KATHERINE MURRAY, Rochelle, is a Territory Manager at RJ Reynolds. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame in 2009.

CARA O’BRIEN, Woodstock, was awarded a Doctor of Medicine in May at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Northwestern University, Evanston. She will pursue a residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, Milwaukee, with a specialty in Internal Medicine-Geriatrics.

TIM ROCKERS, Chicago, earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. He completed a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in December, 2012. He works at MWH Global.

CLASS OF 2009CODY O’NEILL, Harvard, has been hired as the offensive line coach for the Montana State University-Northern Lights in Havre, Montana, an NAIA school.

CLASS OF 2010ELIZABETH DICKER, McHenry, earned a B.S. in Chemistry at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. She works as a Quality Control Analyst at ANI Pharmaceuticals.

WILLIAM HASS, Algonquin, earned a Business degree at Augustana. He spent his senior year studying in France and played football in Europe with his Augustana team.

BENJAMIN VALLE, Charleston, SC, graduated from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. He is a Religion teacher and Liturgy Coordinator at Summerville Catholic School in South Carolina.
