Learning and Teaching News

Marian is now well into the first term of learning and it is wonderful to see students engaged in a range of learning

experiences here at the College. Students from Year 7 to 12 would now be working on assessment tasks for some of

their subjects. These summative assessment tasks are just one of the methods teachers use to measure students’

level of achievement and progress in a subject.

The Marian staff are working hard to create meaningful tasks for the students to complete. These tasks are aligned

with the Board of Studies outcomes, in order to gauge where the students are achieving in terms of the band

descriptors and how we can move the students forward with their learning. If your child is struggling with the demands

of an assessment task, he or she should seek assistance from their classroom teacher. Tasks are not designed to

create stress for your child, but rather are an opportunity for them to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding

of the relevant course content.

Managing the demands of high school can be difficult and can be particularly daunting for Year 7 students, who are

juggling multiple subjects and teachers for the first time. Parents can assist their children to meet the demands of high

school by supporting them to implement a regular study routine. Spend some time talking to your child about study

and homework and help them to plan their time. Our student handbook sets out the time that students should be

engaging in home learning;

These home learning sessions can be a time where students can work on their assessment tasks and create study

notes on the work learned in class. Developing good study habits in the early years of high school is vital for success

in the later years. The Student Diary and the Learning Curve companion website are great resources for your child,

providing a wealth of practical study tips and advice. Classroom teachers, KLA Coordinators and Year Coordinators

are also great resources for students and parents should contact the relevant staff if they have any concerns around

assessment or study.

Students in Year 11 and 12 should already be starting to prepare for their upcoming examination periods as set out

below.

2014 MATHS CHALLENGE

The College will start this year’s Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians during the first 3 weeks of Term 2. This is a problem-solving activity organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust which is aimed at the top 15% of students in their year level.

Students will receive a problem booklet containing 6 problems. They are required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems are challenging and require time and persistence but are based on Mathematics which should be known at that level. Students work with a partner on two of the problems.

The aims of the Challenge is to encourage and foster:

* a greater interest in and awareness of the power of mathematics

* a desire to succeed in solving stimulating mathematics problems individually and in groups

* a discovery of the joy of problem solving in mathematics

* the identification of talented young Australians, recognising their achievements nationally and providing support that will enable them to reach their own levels of excellence.

PI Day Celebration

The College will celebrate Pi (∏) Day on Friday, 14 March. There will be different activities and competitions in store for you on this day. Students will enjoy the different hands-on activities and relay games in your Mathematics classes. There will be a Pi- inspired cake competition to enter. You will be judged on your creativity in decorating the pie cakes/cupcakes. You will also enjoy eating the cake with their friends during Lunch/Recess time as all entries will be returned back to you. Another competition to enter is to compose/create a Pi Inspired song. You will be judged on your artistic ability to sing the pi song. Lastly, I would like to challenge anybody who can memorise the longest digit Pi value. Great prizes to be won, so come and join us celebrating Pi day !

On Thursday 6/3/2014 year 7, 8 & 9

students were participants in the college annual

CSIRO EXPERIENCE visit. Students were involved in an exciting and educational

lesson on some of the principles in Science. They were introduced to States of

Matter and the various energy conversions involved in changing states. They wit-

nessed a display on how different materials absorb energy at different rates. They

were also introduced to plasma and several students were keen participants in a

variety of hands on demonstrations involving different forms of plasma. The stu-

dents were amazed and excited to see some of the colourful, noisy and exploding

demonstrations. We all look forward to the visit next year to see what they bring to

WOW the students.
