Dear Parents and Carers,
Today, our College welcomed Year 6 students from St Mary’s, Yogali, their Year 6 teacher, Alice Greatz
and their Principal, MaryJane Simms. The visit is part of the transition program that Marian Catholic
College teachers are collaborating on with St Mary’s staff. One purpose of the visit was to provide Year 6
students with the experience of being in a high school classroom. By all accounts, the students
enthusiastically engaged in the experiences and demonstrated a high degree of competence in the activity,
which sought to enhance descriptive writing in a narrative form. Our English teacher, Angela Brown,
commented that it is good to see how advanced the Year 6 students are with their writing already and she
is looking forward to seeing what they will be able to achieve in the future when they start at Marian next
year.
The purpose of the transition program is multifaceted. It is intended to open up professional dialogue
between primary school and high school teachers, providing a better understanding of the continuum of
student learning and an awareness of the level of knowledge, understanding and skills students have
both acquired and are expected to have at each stage. This professional dialogue has also led to a plan to
allow for better communication and tracking of student achievement, in particular their writing ability,
during the transition from primary school and high school. The improved communication will enable
teachers to have a clearer picture of where each individual student is currently at and where they need to
go to move their learning forward.
Next week, staff from Marian will head over to St Mary’s Yogali and observe the students engaging in a
literacy lesson in their own classroom. This will better inform our teachers about where our Year 7
students are coming from. We are enjoying our collaboration with St Mary’s and we know that our
combined efforts will result in better learning outcomes for our students.
Kind regards,
Christie Scoble
Acting Principal

Learning and Teaching News
Marian currently has six staff putting their learning first. Matthew Segrave, Lora Segrave, Lara Calabria, Heath Neville and myself are studying a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education and Laura Vardanega has commenced her Masters in Religious Education. Our readings, while being challenging, have been interesting and have examined ‘stretching’ ways of knowing beyond any one individual style of knowing to enhance and maximize students’ learning. We have learnt that it is critically important to incorporate into our religious education classrooms, spiritual themes and practices. In particular, integrating and promoting largely ignored ways of knowing such as imagination, contemplation and meditation. By using these activities in the classroom we can extend student learning and take students across Threshold Concepts. A Threshold Concept can be considered as akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It is important to let go and embrace slower, reflective and meditative approaches to learning. As well as, embracing the unknown, knowing beyond and encountering God’s hidden mystery. In another busy week, Year 9 HSIE and Year 9 to 12 Drama students attended a performance of The Unknown Solider. This was in relation to their World War 1 studies and also to engage in, and experience live theatre. Year 10 students also visited the Griffith Regional Theatre to watch a play about The Stolen Generation. This was in conjunction with the National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day. Mrs. Parle (nee Amaro) also took her Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students to a seminar, presented by the Rule of Law Institute to further enrich their preliminary and HSC Legal Studies. Lastly, you may have seen Mrs. Holloway and Aboriginal Elder Aunty Mary from the CSO Wagga. Participate in a Community Services Expo where over 35 local community services were on display at Griffith Central. Marian participated in this event displaying information and explaining about the happenings of our wonderful College.

STUDENTS SHINE IN
THE WORKPLACE
Year 11 Business Services students have been completing the first of their mandatory Industry Work Placements over the past two weeks. Employer feedback has been very positive as students have engaged in their workplace responsibilities and allocated tasks enthusiastically and professionally.
Their roles have included following work, health and safety policies and procedures; communicating with staff, customers, suppliers and clients; working as team members; telephone operations; operating and maintaining a range of office equipment and handling mail. Work placement is the “major work” of the VET course and the business commits to providing
solid workplace training during the week. Congratulations to all the students on the completion of your placements. We are confident you have developed many new skills which will enhance your employability and your understanding of the class work you have covered.
