To complement our inpa-tient rehab services, Maria Parham also offers state of the art physical, occupa-tional and speech therapy on an outpatient basis.

Advanced technology is featured in the Digital Radiology & Cardiovascular Center. With two CT scanners, in-house MRI, Nuclear Medicine and a Women’s Diagnostic Center, no other hospital in the region can provide you the level of care that we offer. Surgical Services is another area that has invested in the latest minimally invasive technology and sophisticated equipment. With five of the region’s best equipped operating rooms and the largest GI Suite, Maria Parham provides you with expertise comparable to larger, academic facilities. While the larger cities of the nearby Research Triangle area may offer many services and products not available in the local Tri-County area, high quality health care for women is not among the missing options. Maria Parham Medical Center offers an excellent selection of minimally invasive gyneco-logical services and advanced technol-ogy procedures to meet the health care needs of women — without the need for a trip to the big city.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that we have many of the minimally invasive procedures for women avail-able right here at Maria Parham,” said Dr. Netasha McLawhorn, chief of staff for the medical center and a physi-cian with Premier Women’s Health in Henderson. “With our location in a smaller community, people often think you have to go Raleigh or Duke to have procedures done when we can do es-sentially the same thing here.”

When it comes to surgical proce-dures, “minimally invasive” is what patients are looking for, said Dr. McLawhorn. Also termed laparoscopic procedures, Dr. McLawhorn said these new approaches to traditional surgery

result in less scarring and less pain – not to mention quicker recovery times.

At Maria Parham, 80-90 percent of all hysterectomies were performed laparoscopi-cally in 2010. A laparoscopic hysterectomy is done by inserting a laparoscope and surgical instruments through several small abdominal incisions. The uterus is removed in small pieces through one of the incisions. In some cases, the cervix is left intact. This type of procedure usually causes minimal blood loss and pain, said Dr. McLawhorn, and the hospital stay is shorter than for total abdominal surgery. Most women can return to normal activity a week or two afterward. With the more traditional abdominal hysterectomy, a much larger abdominal inci-sion is made, requiring a 3-4 day hospital stay and 4-6 weeks of recovery. The latter procedure is still the most common way hysterectomies are performed in most parts of the United States, Dr. McLawhorn added.

From 27 beds in 1926 to its current capacity of 102, Maria Parham Medical Center has expanded services and opportunities in Vance County and the region.

Since its creation 85 years ago, the hospital’s history has been punctuated by several major expansion efforts. At its original location on South Chestnut Street in Henderson, the hos-pital grew from 27 beds to 44 beds to 75 beds.

By the 1960s, more space was needed to meet the needs of the community. The Board of Trustees elected to make a major expansion by building a new 100-bed facility. The heirs of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Brodie donated a 40-acre tract of former dairy land west of Henderson. The new hospital opened on that site on Nov. 14, 1965.

was named for another long-time chairman of the board, who was a strong advocate for outpatient services.

Dean Thornton observed many of these changes during his time managing the hospi-tal’s laboratory from 1961 until he retired in 2004. When he started working in the lab, it

Maria Parham Hospital was named in honor of Mrs. Maria Southerland Parham, whose sons made significant contributions of money and furnishings to the construction of the initial building on South Chestnut Street in Henderson. Described as an esteemed civic and social leader, she operated two schools before the opening of the public school system.

Dr. Daniel Bernstein’s approach to life and to his medical practice is illustrated on the walls of his office at Four County Eye Associates. While waiting for their eyes to be dilated, patients can check out cartoons about medical situations and plaques docu-menting the many awards Bernstein has received from various organizations, such as Prevent Blindness and B’nai B’rith.

Long hours and dedication to his patients have not diminished his sense of humor or commitment to community service.

Among the changes he has seen in the local medical scene since 1976, when he established his practice, are two in which he played a leading role. Thirty-five years ago, cataract surgery was an in-patient proce-dure. It is now routinely performed on an outpatient basis.

A second innovation was the establish-ment of a physician assistant program

at Maria Parham Medical Center.

“I saw what those corps-men did,” Dr. Bernstein said, referring to his ex-perience as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam. It was only a short leap to use his observations to de-velop a program to equip civilians with an equiva-lent set of competencies to serve Vance County and the region, adding a valuable member to the medical team.

As Dr. Bernstein’s practice expanded, Dr. Cynthia Hampton joined Four County Eye Associates in 1990.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Bernstein be-gan his higher education at the University of Michigan and completed requirements

for a bachelor of science degree at the University of California at Berkeley. He received an M.D. degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. After two years of military service, he served a residency in ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

In seeking a site to establish a practice, he was attracted to North Carolina in part because of the cost of malprac-tice insurance in Califor-nia — which he was also

considering — and in part because, “My wife and I were looking for a good place to raise our two young kids.” Henderson qualified on both counts.

consisted of five employees using one room in the Chestnut Street facility. By 2004, the lab employed 40 technicians in “tremendously larger space” on Ruin Creek Road, he said.

Carolyn White has held a number of positions in her 40 years at Maria Parham, including staff nurse, evening nurse supervisor, director of the Medical/Surgical Unit and oth-ers. She noted the tremendous increase in the number of employees. “At one time you knew almost everybody that worked here,” she said. With the growth of the facility, that is no longer the case. Another change is in the quality and skill of the staff. “Nurses today have more competencies,” she said, allowing them to take over some functions, such as blood transfu-sions, previously performed by physicians.

The most recent expansion to the medical center took place between 2003 and 2006, when a $58 million patient tower was con-structed and patient-care areas were renovated.

At the ground breaking ceremony in 2003, Swanson Dodd, chairman of the board of directors at the time, proclaimed a change in the official name from Maria Parham Hospital to Maria Parham Medical Center. Noting the diverse skills and impressive abilities of the physicians, technicians and patient care providers, he said, “We have earned medical center status and will work diligently to further improve on what we have accomplished.”

Dr. W. Beverly Tucker, the current chair-man of the board of directors, said the modern facility places Maria Parham in a position to at-tract more medical specialists and offer greater service to Vance County and the region.

Tucker also said the new facility allowed an expansion of services, helping more patients to be treated here rather than having to travel.

The expansion includes more private rooms and larger rooms. The patient facilities in the old structure were renovated to match the style of the new section, brightening and modern-izing the area, Tucker said.

Another major change is on the horizon. In February 2011 the board of directors approved and signed a memorandum of understanding to form a partnership with Duke University Health System Inc. and LifePoint Hospitals. The MOU is non-binding but authorizes the parties to move ahead with a negotiation process, leading to a formal agreement. Tucker said, “We are very excited about the tremen-dous benefits this proposed partnership offers our employees, medical staff and community.”

MPMC offers a wide range of services and the latest technology to meet the needs of the community. As the second largest employer in Vance County with approximately 750 em-ployees, the medical center is a major contribu-tor to the economic health of the region.

dure, endometrial ablation, destroys the uterine lining, or endometrium. The procedure is used to treat heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding and can be an alternative for hysterectomies for some women, Dr. McLawhorn said.

Tubal ligations, done to permanently prevent future pregnancies, are also done using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, she added.

Maria Parham Medical Center also offers a number of cutting-edge technologies in its Women’s Imaging Center.

The hospital began offering digital mammog-raphy in December 2009. “Digital mammogra-phy allows us to see through dense breast tissue more effectively,” said Bonnie Howell, director of imaging and cardiovascular services. “We often encounter denser breast tissue in younger women, and when we do find abnormalities or a malignancy in the younger women, it tends to be more critical.”

Digital mammography also provides advantages for a woman undergoing a standard screening mammogram. With film-based mam-

mograms, the patient needed to return to the waiting area while the film from the mammo-gram was processed to ensure that the mammo-gram images were clear and that additional views were not needed. “With digital imaging, we’re able to release a patient straight from the exam room because we can instantly see what’s been captured on the image and perform additional views right then if needed,” Howell said.

If a nodule or other abnormality is discov-ered, the Women’s Imaging Center also offers stereotactic breast biopsy, a less invasive way to retrieve tissue to see if cancer cells are present. The imaging center staff can insert a needle into the affected area through which the radiologist can actually retrieve a tiny core of tissue. “The patient doesn’t have to be put to sleep and go through a standard surgical procedure. Once the biopsy is completed, most patients can leave and go straight to work or back home with just a band-aid over the spot where the needle entered,” said Howell.

Other radiologic procedures can help make surgical procedures less invasive by providing needle guides that help surgeons more accu-rately locate cancerous tissue, and by injecting low doses of radioactive material into the lymph nodes to help physicians identify areas where cancer cells may have spread.

The Women’s Imaging Center also provides bone density studies to help evaluate bone loss in women, and performs breast ultrasounds to help further diagnose any abnormalities that may be discovered during a routine screening mammogram.

When it comes to making decisions about health, women have long been the chief decision makers, Dr. McLawhorn said. “One of the first places a healthy young women comes in contact with a hospital is when she has a baby. If she has a good experience, she’ll be back for a mammo-gram or for other gynecological services.”

That’s why having a top notch Women and Infant Services Department has long been a priority for the hospital. “We have a nice facility, excellent pediatricians and a great group of family practitioners, OB/GYN physicians and midwives who deliver here,” she added. Women have a lot of choice in the kind of experience they can have, and the educational offerings, includ-ing everything from birthing classes to breast-feeding consultations are readily available.

“Every time I hear one of those larger medical centers advertise that they have this service or that service, I just laugh and think, ‘We’re doing all that at Maria Parham,’ ” Dr. McLawhorn said. “ People just don’t realize what great services are already offered right here.”

For 85 years, Maria Parham Medical Center has combined the qualities necessary to offer the best in community medi-cine — physicians represent-ing a wide range of specialties, highly trained nurses and clinical specialists, and the latest technology.

The heart of Maria Parham Medical Center is a 102-bed facility fully accredited by the Joint Commission.

The range of services is not typical for a hospital this size. Cardiac catheterization, heart-burn treatment, and radiation and chemotherapy cancer care are a few of the services normally available in larger cities. Maria Parham is proud of the services it provides and the hundreds of dedicated profes-sionals who make us a healthcare leader.

Medical/Surgical Services

The mainstays of Maria Parham Medical Center are the Medical and Surgical Units. These nursing units are made up of a group of well trained healthcare providers who understand the special needs of the patient who has been admitted for an illness or is recovering from a surgery. Supporting the physicians and nurses are a team of techni-cians, therapists and other staff that

work together to get you back on your feet again. The Med/Surg rooms are designed for the patient, emphasizing comfort and care. And by the way ... the food is great!

Cancer CenterWhen the people of our com-

munity asked for our help in the fight against cancer, Maria Parham responded. The Maria Parham Cancer Center offers a full range of cancer services close to home. Medical and radiation oncology are both offered, along with related

services such as counseling and nu-trition. The Cancer Center is part of Duke Medicine and it benefits from the relationship offering some of the world’s cutting edge cancer treatment programs. Education is available through an on-site Cancer Resource Center, a joint effort of The American Cancer Society and Maria Parham Medical Center.

EmergencyMedical Care

When your family needs emergency medical attention,

Maria Parham Medical Center is there for you day or night. Staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week by a team of specially trained Emergency Physicians and Physician’s Assistants, along with a team of emergency nurses and technicians, Maria Parham’s Emergency Depart-ment (ED) has the knowledge and technology to treat or stabilize the emergencies that come through our doors.

Minor Injury or Illness? Fast Track is a specialized part of the ED that is set up to treat patients that arrive with a minor injury or illness. Fast Track is open from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week.

Intensive and Progressive Care

Maria Parham’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) features eight critical care beds and five progressive care beds. The ICU uses the latest in technology to complement the highly skilled physicians, nurses and technicians who provide the compassionate care required. The ICU handles a wide range of medical services with emphasis on cardiac and pulmonary care. The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a twelve bed telemetry unit that offers the extra care needed as patients are diagnosed and treated for issues such as heart attacks and stroke. When Kathy Thomas’ kinder-garten teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, the answer was always the same. “I always wanted to be a nurse. I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else.”

Thomas grew up in the Bob-bitt community on her parents’ hog farm. Later, her family ran Beckham’s Barbecue, a local restaurant, for many years. She headed straight for East Carolina University after graduating high school and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She had already been working as a nursing assistant at Maria Parham Medical Center while in school, and the hospital had awarded her a nursing scholar-ship to help pay for her education. She returned to the hospital in 1995 and has been working here as a nurse ever since.

Thomas is currently the man-ager of wound care services for the hospital. She returned to school at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., in 1996 to earn certification in wound management, ostomy care and incontinence care.

She put her new skills to work first as a wound care specialist for

hospitalized patients, then expand-ed out to treat patients who were being cared for by the hospital’s home health nurses. Several years ago, the hospital opened its outpa-tient wound care clinic, which now operates four days a week.

“I believe in what the hospital gives back to the community,” said Thomas. “I like having a connec-tion with the patients I care for. I

often know their families or loved ones and that makes them feel more secure. We try to treat every-one like they’re our next of kin.”

Because most of her patients are older, traveling to Raleigh or Durham for care can be difficult. “If a patient requires more than we can offer, I don’t hesitate to send them where they need to go to get the care they need. But I know

that traveling out of town is a big concern for many of our patients and I always assure them we’ll be right here for them when they get back.”

Thomas feels her role is that of a servant, taking care of her neighbors. “I don’t know a better population to serve than the people you’re going to live around and go to church with.”

Even as a young girl, Cindy Faulkner loved to read her mom’s nursing books and magazines. “I think I always knew I wanted to be a nurse like her,” Faulkner said.

She headed off to nursing school after graduating from high school in Henderson in 1978, but ended up delaying her pursuit of a nursing degree to marry and start a family. Her own family had moved to Hen-derson when she was 11, and her husband had grown up here, so they settled in Henderson to start their life together.

Faulkner worked at Maria Parham Medical Center in non-nursing roles for several years, but headed back to Vance-Granville Communi-ty College in 1985 to resume her nurse’s train-ing. The hospital had offered her a scholarship, and she graduated with an associate’s degree in nursing in 1988.

Except for a short stint working in Raleigh,

Faulkner was employed as a staff nurse at Maria Parham until 1999, when she accepted the position of manager of the Women and Infants Department. She continued her education, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from N.C. Central University in 2001. She was named to her current post as vice president of patient care services in 2004, and completed her master’s degree in health care administra-tion at UNC-CH in 2008.

Taking care of the health care needs of her friends and neighbors is a special privilege to

Faulkner. “When I worked in Raleigh, I never saw my patients again after they were discharged. I didn’t really know them or their families. Here, you go to church together, you see each other in the grocery store, your kids play together. You really are taking care of your neighbors. I like know-ing that I’m taking care of people from my own community.”

The primary reason a patient is admitted to the hospital is because they need nursing care, said Faulkner. “If they stay overnight, they’re here because they need the care of a nurse. Nurses are critical. You can’t have a hospital without nurses.”

Faulkner believes that having nurses and staff members who are from the local area is an advantage. “The employees know each other, we know our physicians better – we’re just more of a family.”

Healthcare 13

After start-ing a family, Cindy Faulkner returned to nursing school at Vance-Graville Community Col-lege. Now the vice president of patient care ser-vices at MPMC, she earned her bachelor’s degree at N.C. Central Uni-versity and her master’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
