The concept for the stairs and landing is the same as the ground floor entrance hall but with the exception of additional storage solution for Olivia:-

• Little to no natural day light therefore good ambient lighting in warm white to allow navigation to the first floor rooms.

• Uncluttered with practical furniture pieces that are functional and

unbtrusive.

• Sophisticated look and feel to the space

OLIVIA’S APARTMENT STAIRS & LANDING

FURNITURE

The design scheme for the landing area has created a functional space with a large bespoke furniture piece offering additional storage facility to the apartment. The lighting adds interest and provides decorative lighting for highlighting key pieces of interest to Olivia. The use of different woods adds interest with con-trasting colours in neutral tones to ensure the piece does not look to sterile. The depth of the piece is unobtrusive ensuring there is a good amount of space for manouverability and access to the first floor rooms. The position of the staircase is away from this furniture piece and ensures safety and access to rooms are no obstructed.

WALLCOVERING

The Ralph Lauren Josephine Deco wallcovering offers a delicate feminine pattern to the hallway and is inspired by the fabric design of a flapper dress from the Art Deco era. The delicate Art Deco pattern is embellished with beads for an extra touch of sparkle and will catch and reflect light creating a sophisticated look to the hallway, stairs and landing areas. Neutral in colour it is easy on the eye.

FLOORING

The Barefoot Birkham carpet is plush, comfortable and warm underfoot . This eco friendly carpet is supplied by Alternative Flooring. It is handwoven and is made from 100% un-dyed wool onto a cotton base and completely handcrafted.

LIGHTING

The Glamour N16 Gold Pendant light was chosen for its decorative form with its randomly formed geometric shapes, (a reference to the Art Deco era where geometric shapes were popular and also Mid-Century designers such as David Hicks who was popular for his colourful patterns). It offers diffused lighting which bathes the surrounding area in a soft sensuous glow which is welcoming. The gold finish adds a luxurious texture to the space. (Miller, 2012) (Bradbury, 2015)

Philips Smartspot LED’s for ambient light as no natural light is received to this room. The very latest LED lighting technology is used with the new warm white state-of-the-art high power LEDs providing a beam of light with a colour tem-perature of 2700 Kelvin.. • Dressing table area restricts type of window treatment to balcony doors. No natural light so would need to address with additional lighting to this area.

• On entering space there is no feature wall immediately visible.

• Bed is an integral part of the bespoke furniture and is high-lighted with led lighting behind headboard.

• To stop the room looking bland with expanse of bespoke furni-ture; materials used to create it should add interest and sub-stance to the design to create interest as this is the dominate feature of the bedroom space.

• The amount of storage ward-robe space is large and could be too much even with a large collection of shoes and hats.

• Clear pathway to all areas of bedroom space including bal-cony access.

Layout 1 has been chosen as the best solution for the spatial plan of Olivias bedroom.

This layout offers a feature wall, clear pathways to all aspects of the room.

There is deemed enough storage within the design without knowing the true extent of Olivias collection of hats and shoes and clothes. However, should there be need of more the bespoke storage furniture immediately located on the landing should help any overflow issues.

OLIVER MESSEL - (1904 - 1978)

‘I attempted to use every device to make as much magic as possible’.

Oliver Messel was the leading British stage designer of the mid-twentieth century.

Messel’s career spanned fifty years from 1925 and his work was internationally acclaimed for his mastery of period style and exquisite taste. He was the most sought after and highly paid costume and scenery designers of his time.

Messel was a master of illusion and make-believe; from his early childhood he made model houses, furniture and painted maquettes.

His minute attention to detail and inventive use of materials and imagination be-came his trademark.

The Victoria and Albert Museum houses a collection of Oliver Messel which con-sists of around 10,000 individual items since 1981.

The Queen of Spades (1949)

‘The Queen of Spades is something rare in this country, a successful essay in romantic period, Oliver Messel’s setting and costumes are among the most beautiful I can remember seeing on the English screen’.

The choice of mirrored furniture pieces for Olivia’s bedroom has an unintentional connection with the actual film set ‘The Queen of Spades” where mirrors were used as a recurring motif in the film: characters look at themselves at crucial points and their actions are also frequently seen reflected in mirrors.

A delicate, feminine design scheme with soft sumptious textures has been achieved for Olivia’s bedroom achieving a calm, serene place for her to sleep, dress and relax.

SPATIAL LAYOUT/FURNITURE

The placement of furniture within the room allows great freedom of movement within the space with no restrictions especially to and from the balcony area. It is simple, unclut-tered and functional for sleeping, relaxing and dressing.

The symmetrical placement of the bedside tables assists in creating a visually balanced design.

Anthropometrics were taken into consideration with regards to the place of the dressing table and stool opposite the bed to ensure standing to sitting was achieved within the guidelines. These particular pieces are slim in depth to allow for the anthropometrics whilst allowing functionality and purpose.

The dressing table and bedside tables echo the Art Deco era with their style and add elegance to the bedroom. Their light reflecting qualities add sparkle and enhance the space by creating a magical atmosphere. The hard mirrored textures add contrast to the softness of the bed and bedding.

The Elsie bed is a contemporary statement piece against the feature wall with its grey velvety textured material and size. Its placement is ideal as it does not receive direct natural light from the large patio doors.

A large bespoke wardrobe utilises the space to the rear wall and should provide Olivia with plenty of storage for clothes, hats and shoes. The doors to the piece are to be white gloss with LED strip lighting to allow ease of choosing garments etc. Its placement away from the doorway and patio doors ensures privacy for dressing.

COLOUR

A serene, calm colour scheme of soft, delicate pale blues, whites, greys with a hint of dusky pink adds femininity and a dreamlike palette for the bedroom setting. Blues are particularly calming as we connect them with the sky and water and are associated with clear thinking and calm, meditative environments. Perfect for Olivia to unwind and relax after a busy day running her wedding business. (Starma, 2015)

WALL COVERINGS

Timorous Beasties Bird branch hand painted wallcovering panels create a feature wall be-hind the bed. It is made from sustainable materials and is therefore environmentally friendly. The wallpaper is inspired by nature with its branches and birds this will have a positive im-pact on Olivia’s well-being. A subtle reference to the Art Deco era where elements of nature adorned many design elements of interiors at that time.

FLOORING


Suzanne Sharp hand made Tibetan wool and silk rug offers a layer of luxury to the flooring and its soft overlapping geometric pattern adds depth and interest. The background is a warm grey with a hint of lilac with a subtly raised tonal silk motif. Reknowned for its softness and durability, Tibetan wool and fine silk adds a touch of luxuriousness to the bedroom that has long lasting properties. The soft subtle geometric pattern has delicate references to the Art Deco and Mid Century eras.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Long draping curtains in vintage velvet material add drama and feminity to the space whilst blocking out natural light and providing privacy.

The Timorous Beasties Spring Blossom lace panels add feminity to the windows that allows natural light to enter the room whilst providing some privacy. They also compliment the Bird-branch feature wallpaper panels to create a cohesive design.

The delicate lace texture is a pleasing contrast to the heavy softness of the velvet curtains.

Its branches echo the design of the Birdbranch wall-paper and Spring blossom window lace; each form is comparative in design, but offers a diffferent perspective with texture and aesthetics which creates interest and prevents the design scheme from looking too uniformed.

The Mantra 2 light bedside table lamps are decorative and their placement in front of the wall hung mirrors will add another dimension of light to the room through their reflection.

ACCESSORIES

The Oliver Messel “Queen of Spades” artwork provides a romantic feel to the room and is a feature above the dressing table and is lit with contemporary picture light by The Lighting Book.

The desk position ensures Olviia will not be distracted with closeness to balcony area if so desired.

SYLVIA STAVE VASE

SYLVIA STAVE (1908-1994)

Sylvia Stave Is one of the great mysteries of 20th-century design history. Born in Växjö as Sylvia Gadd, she came to Stockholm at the age of 21. With a strong artistic ambition, Stave submitted samples in form of drawings and was taken on by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Aged just 23, Sylvia Stave became artistic director at C. G. Hallbergs. Stave was noticed for her distinctive qualities as a designer by Ake Stavenow. Her work from thereonin was for a narrow seg-ment of the market producing exclusive and artistically avant-garde production of silver and pewter objects. Staves designs were minimalistic and unadorned. The forms she presented while at C. G. Hallbergs are marked to a large degree by a sculptural, geometrical idiom. There was a revival of interest in Staves work internationally which is linked to Alessi. Alessi began to manufacture a variant of her work of jugs and cocktail shakers using stainless steel in 1989. To-day, the cocktail shaker is marketed by Alessi as a design of Sylvia Stave.

The National Museum of Stockholm houses Staves work which demonstrates the high quality of her short but intense career during the interwar years.

Produced in Sweden in 1934 by C.G. Hallberg, this vase was designed by Sylvia Stave. The round vase is made from pewter and features engraved linear detailing. It is in a good vintage condition.

office conceptA fresh, bright and feminine design scheme has been produced for Olivias home office by way of the following design elements:-

SPATIAL/FURNITURE

Clear pathways to each area of the office and balcony ensure ease of movement throughout the space with no obstacles.

A clear and uncluttered layout was designed to ensure that all furniture pieces were appropriate and offered purpose and function to the home office environment.

The desk position facing the entry doorway ensures that Olivia is not distracted whilst still having immediate access to the balcony area.

A Mid-Century styled desk and small console by WestElm were chosen for their clean, elegant, simple form and aesthetics which also provides additional storage. The con-sole also provides the office with an additional surface area. Both pieces of furniture are made with FSc certified solid eucalyptus wood which is better for our environment.

Whilst the bespoke storage cupboard with doors provides hidden ample storage for files, stationery, printers and so forth and thereby achieving an organised, uncluttered office.Its position within the space, creates a streamlined appearance with the en-trance doorway to the office.

The Stua gas chair and Vitra Softshell chair are Mid-Century design pieces that work well in this space both offering comfort and style to Olivia’s home office setting.

COLOUR

A feminine approach to the colourscheme is representative of Olivia’s wedding busi-ness. Pinks, creams and whites where chosen to reflect her work.

WALLCOVERING

Pattern and texture has been added to the walls of the office space with Eltis Candy Silk Effect vinyl wallcovering. The contemporary delicate, subtle linear pattern creates visual calming backdrop to this workspace. This wallcovering is hardwearing and has varnished top coat for an increased UV and abrasion resistance. This silk effect en-sures some reflection of light.

ACCESSORIES

The beautiful contemporary Alexander McQueen wall-hanging is a true feature of the office space. It offers great contrast of texture and pattern and injects colour which also softens the visual look of the office to prevent it from looking to stark and clinical. This wall hanging is inspired by macro floral imagery, mag-nifying a classic floral bloom to the point of abstraction. It has been finely woven in the aubusson tapestry tradition. It is explosive dramatic art form for the office. With reference to the Art Deco wall hangings were popular especial amongst Parisians with designers such as Robert Bonfils who designed colourful tapestry and wall hangings during the era. (Bayer, 2000)

The Here and There Cabernet Rug has wool and silk accents which when lay-ered against the Barefoot Birkham carpet adds depth of colour to the room and grounds the design with its deep colour contrast

The Sylvia Stave pewter vase is minimalist in its design and form. It compli-ments the rooms clean look whilst the linear lines engraved in the pewter mate-rial mimics the Eltis Candy silk wallcovering.

The pretty Art Nouveau insect dish by Rostrand dates between 1920-1949. It was chosen of its pretty feminine quality and decorative form which compliments the design scheme of the office especially the ‘Poppy Days” wallhanging.

Silk Peony roses and yoshino berries are again feminine and a reminder of the outdoors and nature for Olivia’s well-being. Silk arrangement was chosen due to Olivia travelling and busy lifestyle and is a practical choice rather than fresh flowers.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Simple flexible slatted blinds remotely controlled offers the perfect solution for Olivia to control the amount of light entering the room and privacy issues. The blinds are made with a soft organic weave that is textured. They add colour into the room with its feminine Montgomery pink and compliment the other design elements.

A good amount of natural light is received to the office space.

A flexibilie lighting system on separate switches offers varied light into the office space.

Philips Smartspot LED’s within the lighting scheme add warm white additional ambient lighting

Feature lighting for the office is by way of the iconic PH Artichoke Pendant by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen. This decorative pendant light is perfect for the office, offering glare free diffused comfortable lighting to the space. It was originally deisgned in 1958 in enamelled allummiun and steel. A smaller version in white has been chosen for the office space.

On the console table a PH3/2 table lamp in opaline glass and polished chrome compliments the PH Artichoke light offering elegant, simple and comfortable light-ing layer to the space.

For task lighting the Bloominvale Table lamp offers a pretty, simplistic design with its sleek lines with an injection of pink to lift the desk space and add some feminin-ity. Its angular shape adds a different form to the room creating interest.

The client brief for the bathroom space was to create a luxurious experience for Olivia to indulge in after a busy day with running her succesful business.

• A luxury spa type feel through texture and colour.

• Colour choices to be warm and inviting with hints of glamour such as using textures with sparkle against other textures such as wood and tiles. The colours are to be kept neutral to allow Olivia to enjoy a relaxed at-mosphere visually to unwind.

• High Specification of furniture and bathing experience.

• To ensure adequate and different layers of lighting as no natural light is received to the bathroom area to carry out varied bathing tasks.

Olivia’s request for a luxurious bathing experience has been met by the design for the bathroom area.

Overall, a spa experience that is both tranquil and luxurious with a relaxing atmosphere has been created with the following design elements:-

SPATIAL/FURNITURE:

All of Olivia’s bathing needs are met with a compact high end specification shower and bath and elegant free standing basin unit.

With an exceptionally high end specification, the Designer Athena Air Spa bath was cho-sen for its functionality and its aesthetic looks of elegant lines and contemporary design. It provides a more luxurious approach to the traditional rectangular bath. The bathing experi-ence is highlighted more by its functionality and benefits to Olivia’s well being with chromo-therapy and underwater lights to suit mood and therapeutic system of warm air and water injection which gently massages and relaxes across the full length and width of the body. Different pulse settings, together with water temperature and speeds give the Olivia either an invigorating or relaxing toning massage as she baths. The Rhoper Rhodes designer basin cabinet provides ample storage for bathroom prod-ucts. The wood grain adds texture, warmth and interest to the room against the porcelain beige tiles

COLOUR

Neutral calming and pleasing to the eye scheme was created for the bathroom area with choice of textures to create interest.

LIGHTING

No natural light enters this space and it was important to create different levels of lighting for Olivia’s bathing experience. Shower specification warm white (3200K) LED down lights create ambient lighting to the space and can be dimmed to suit. Button mini LED lights again in warm white (3200K) were added to the built in alcoves above the bath and to the shower cubicle adding mood lighting. The shell iridescent mosaic tiles to these areas re-flect the light and add sparkle.

The Aqua Cabinets illuminated mirror provides task lighting.

WALLS & FLOORS

Large Danio Reale Beige gloss porcelain tiles were used for both the walls and floors creating a cohesive streamlined effect. Whilst the irridescent shell mosaic tiles visually adds texture and contrasts against the larger wall tiles. These delicate mosiacs were used to frame and create a front panel to the bath. Chosen for their reflective quality creating a layer of reflective lighting and to add a luxirious feel to the bathroom.

ACCESSORIES

High quality accessories compliment and add to the luxurious feel of the space by adding warm woods (Moeve bin, dispenser and toilet brush holder), to the soft dense Egyptian cotton towels.

The large gold flower dish by Aerin adds interest and decorative reflective qualities to the bathroom space.
