This very busy Term is drawing to a rapid close. As usual, the school program has included a vast variety of events, activities and special occasions that extend far

beyond the classroom instruction. Parents comment to me frequently on the exceptional range of opportunities their students have at MRSHS and I know our staff take professional pride in providing this for our students.

These early progress reports focus on learning behaviours and enable parents, students and the school to engage early in discussions about how students might best achieve good results for the school year. Please discuss the report with your child and support development in any areas where improvement may be needed to bring greater success. A wonderful afternoon was had by all as they witnessed a fantastic performance by our musical students, Perth Modern School, Warnbro Community College and Guitarstrophe!. The afternoon was emceed by Rose Paley and Matt Kevill who did an exemplary job. As the sun started to fade, the crescendo of the afternoon was the Primary School choir which was a combined choir from the Leeuwin school cluster directed by Ross Happs and Helen Collis.

A big thank you to Bruce Godden who coordinated the event and all the staff and students involved in such a fantastic performance.

Language: Bahasa IndonesiaIndonesian is the official language of our closest neighbour, the Republic of Indonesia and is spoken widely throughout the region by over 210 million people.

Through Indonesian studies, our students are developing their knowledge, skills and cultural understandings in order to communicate effectively within the community and the world. They are enriching their literacy, citizenship and intercultural acknowledgement.

Students studying Indonesian participate in a wide variety of interesting projects and excursions, such as ongoing communication with our sister schools, Santa Laurensia in Jakarta and SMAN 15 in Surabaya; and visits to the Indonesian Consulate for gamelan workshops and Independence Day activities. Example of activities that students engage in include Wayang kulit (Shadow puppet) performances, Indonesian choir, traditional dance workshops, batik making and Indonesian cooking demonstration. This variety of activities and events make their language program interesting. (Angela McCoy)

Earlier in Term One saw the annual visit by our Indonesian sister school – Santa Laurensia. This was the second visit for short term educational, cultural and language visits by nineteen students and two teachers. Thanks must go to our host families, students and teachers. The sister school relationship with Santa Laurensia succeeds largely because of the great kindness and outstanding parenting skills of our MRSHS host families. Our special thanks to Margaret River Lions, Shepherdson Transport and Ian Thwaites for their support to the successful of the program.

(Angela McCoy)

Comments from Host Families:

• This is a great program and has been a great experience for our family (Shawcross Family).• We would happy to host again next year. Thanks for the opportunity (Ross Family).• We don’t have any negatives at all about the experience only positives. We would definitely love to do it again next year. (Challis/Coates Family).• We found the program was well organised. We appreciated the effort the Santa Laurensia students put into the farewell/thank you performance (Paton Family).• It was a wonderful experience and we would not hesitate to be part of the program again (Hogan Family).

Mrs McCoy’s Scholarship to Darwin“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to

his heart. (Nelson Mandela)”

I was the sole Western Australian practising Indonesian Language teacher to be selected for the wonderful Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowship to Darwin in January, 2009. This scholarship, funded by the Federal government under DEEWR and managed by the Asia Education Foundation, gave me the opportunity to re-immerse myself in Indonesian language and culture. Twenty six practising and trainee teachers Australia wide and two leaders were selected for this amazing experience.

Darwin, five and a half hours by plane from Perth, was our main destination. It is the closest Australian state to Indonesia since all the Bahasa Indonesia awardees couldn’t immerse in country because of the travel warning. The Charles Darwin University at Casuarina was a perfect

venue for our intensive language course. We were treated to the double delight of immersion in Indonesian language and culture. Classes included the investigation of useful websites, the use of songs and films to engage students and encourage communication, activities (skits, role playing, games) and a study in signal which are so essential to communicating in Indonesian. Other classes, that also had us absorbed, dealt with the Indonesian culture, changes in society, its changing language and a comparison of the Indonesian education system with ours.

Besides our university lectures, we also went on day trips around Darwin with the famous Tour Tub, East Point Reserve, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, George Brown Darwin Botanical Gardens and WWII Oil Storage Tunnels, Indonesian Consulate, Darwin Mosque and using our two free days to visit Litchfield and Kakadu National Park.

The highlight of our trip was a full day visit to Bawaka, a homeland of Lak Lak Burarrwanga in North East Arnhem Land. We caught a very early Qantas flight from Darwin to Gove, and then continued our trip by 4WD to Nhulunbuy where we met Lak Lak and visited the Aboriginal Arts Gallery before we went to Lak Lak’s homeland. The visit to Arnhem Land and learning about the history of relationships between Australian Aboriginal

and Indonesian Makassan was an eye opener for me.

I am extremely privileged to have been selected as one of the twenty six Endeavour Language Teaching Fellowship awardees across Australia. I feel re-energized after such concentrated exposure to the Indonesian language and culture and I look forward to sharing both my experiences and some new teaching/learning techniques with colleagues and my classes.

Jacob Payne and Brent Kevill dismantling the barrels to dry them out.

The Year 11 &12 Furniture Design students have an exciting challenge for their Materials Design and Technology course this semester. The challenge is to make a piece of furniture from a wine barrel. Each student has to complete a detailed design brief exploring the relevant aspects of the project such as how to join materials that have no straight edges, how to make use of the flowing curves of the barrel’s staves and being creative with the red wine stain on the inside of the barrels.

We will keep you updated on the progress and reproduce some images of the results after week 6 of next term. As a lead up to this project students had a smaller challenge when they were to produce an item that would be at home in a kitchen. We had some very creative ideas ranging from cutting boards and wooden spoons through to clocks and even some bowls with chopsticks, all made from the recycled French Oak.

During a research assignment students found out a wealth of information about the trade of a cooper and the origins of the materials that they would be working with. We were all intrigued to discover that the French oak that we are using came from one of five, named, fenced and guarded forests in France that were originally planted by Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Barrels were sourced from “retired” stock from Redgate Winery thanks to Simon Keall.

Community Service Program ReportCongratulations to the Year 10’ s for a great start to the Community Service Program (CSP). Several students have already completed the required 20 hours of Community Service. Congratulations also to the students who have taken up the opportunities for community service advertised through the school. The Year 11’s are currently out-doing the Year 12’s in the number of hours of CSP completion.

All students have been informed on their current status of CSP completion and a request has been made by the CSP coordinators to Year 12 students that have fallen behind with their community service to submit a plan of how they intend to complete the CSP. Year 12 students are reminded that they have until AUGUST to complete their community service requirement to achieve their WACE.

STUDENTS CAN NOT GRADUATE IF THEY DO NOT COMPLETE THE YEAR 12 CSP REQUIREMENT. If you need ideas for community service, please contact Ms Duffy or Mr Thwaites.

From Göttingen to Margaret River The school welcomed German exchange student Aurelia Rethwilm to the Year 11 cohort. Aurelia is in Margaret River for a semester and wants to improve her English language skills and meet Australian students. She loves it here and has already made lots of friends. Aurelia is studying Biology, Geography, Maths, French, English and Applied Information Technology. Aurelia is also helping out in the German classroom, assisting with speaking and assessment tasks. YEAR 9 STUDENTS

All Year 9 students will take part in the National Assessment Program testing their literacy and numeracy skills. The tests are scheduled for the mornings of Tuesday 12 May, Wednesday 13 May and Thursday 14 May. The length of these tests range from 45 minutes to 65 minutes and students will complete these during their English and Mathematics classes. All schools across Australia must complete the assessments on the same days.

The results of the national literacy and numeracy assessments will provide an important measure of how all Australian students are performing in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy, number; algebra, function and pattern; space; and measurement and chance and data. The performance of all students will be monitored against National Achievement Bands established using the 2008 Naplan data.

You will receive a confidential report from the school by the end of the year. If you would like further information, please contact the school or refer to the Naplan website www.det.wa.edu.au/education/naplan/

Mentoring NewsIn 2009 the MRSHS Mentoring programme enters its 9th year of operation. The key to its success is the commitment, enthusiasm and motivation of the mentors, the students, the school and the wider Margaret River community. The programme’s main focus is problem-solving - helping a student to develop skills to understand and address any problems they identify, be they personal, academic or organisational … and the school hopes this will improve and enrich a student’s school life.

Mentors come into the school once a week to share a myriad of experiences and talents, and together with their student they develop a relationship that is characterised by mutual trust and respect, one that is based on fun, encouragement and a willingness to learn and share.

Comments from students about their mentoring experience include - “I enjoy school because I understand it more”“I found that other people have opinions”“I feel more confident”“…..I am able to talk to someone about things”“Anyone who would like to try it to help them – go for it, it could be a life-changing opportunity”

Mentors also gain from the experience.

I am always interested to hear from people who have an hour a week to spare and would like to support our students by becoming a volunteer mentor. The process to become a mentor is not too difficult and the joys of being involved are great.

If you are interested in your child becoming a mentee, or keen on becoming a mentor yourself, please contact me –Deborah Barber, Mentor Coordinator

Term 1 2009

Student Council ElectionsA record number of candidates nominated to become a 2009 Student Councillor. The process adopted by the Student Council is a combination of merit selection and popular election.

The six available Year 12 positions were filled without the need for a selection process. Four councillors then nominated for President and Vice President positions. These student leader positions were filled through an interview process. Congratulations to Emma Green for becoming the 2009 Student Council president and Amy Burgess for having been appointed Vice President.

The other Year groups experienced stronger interest in the available council positions. After having to write a self-endorsement note, they were scrutinised for good standing before being invited to an interview. Finally, on Tuesday, they stood for a popular election. I would like to thank all candidates for committing themselves to public scrutiny by nominating for the 2009 Student Council. The election took into account the student vote, the teacher vote and the interview notes.
