Open Futurity on RFD-TV, the announcers(Jirn Ware and Chubby Turner) noted that we wereabout to see the last foal out of the legendaryLaney Doc to appear in the NCHA Open FuturityFinals. That foal was Laney Rey Too.

It was obvious as we watched the 08 Futurityfinals that the cattle were rather difficult. Wesaw Laney Rey Too put tcgether a solid run that

MffiM%in the finals. But more important this marerepresents the culmination of a great producerecord that has earned $1,410,734.82 to date.

I-aney Rey Too also represents the last NCHAFuturity finalist for Laney Doc. This great mareproduced six NCHA Open and Non-Pro FuturityFinalist and four more have made the semi-finalsof NCHA Open and Non-Fro Futurity. Thus we seethe coming of the end of an era but on the other

hand we will have the continuation of herlegacy as Laney Doc has certainly earned ourtitle of a mare with more.

l-aney Doc was bred by Gary Dixon ofMarietta, Georgia. She was foaled in 1982and sired by Doc Quixote. Her dam wasChristmas For.rr by Christmas Star. Laterin 1982 Laney Doc became the property ofCrawford Farms of Houston, Texas. Shewas purchased by Fares Ranch, lnc. ofFredericksburE, Texas as a two year old in1984.

When the Fares Ranch bought her,she was put in the hands of Bi l l Riddle.Riddle had a young Australian horsemannamed Guy Wood working for him. Woodremembered Laney Doc in those earlyyears this way, "We had about 40 coltsthat year and she was one of the highdollar purchases on the ranch. Billtoldme to be real careful with that onebecause she cost a lot of money."

Wood continued, "l put the firstride on her and she was so easy toget along with. I had a good friendworking with me at the time namedMike Carrol . I was teaching him howto break col ts, so l just put him onher. He rode her about 30 days andshe was easy to get along with andeasy to teach things to."

"Then when it came time to startthem on cows, I started her on acow and I rode her all year long.

I used to hide her from Bill. Because if he saw her thatwould be the end of my trip on her," continued Wood onhis efforl to keep this good mare as long as possible.

"Finally one day he told me he wanted to see her andI drug her out and worked her and that was the last timeI rode her. That was late in the two-year-old year."

Wood found Laney Doc to be specialfrom the very

is quoted telling about Christmas Four's working style,"She came along before her time. She'd be a star today. She had a lot of get down on a cow; she really had

,XJill,,""o she'd hit the shanks on the bit with her front

Laney Doc became one of the industries greatshow mares. She was 1986 NCHA Derby ReserveChampionship and the 1987 Gold And Silver S-Year-Oldbeginning. He talked about what made her special this

way, "The very first time I put her on lFGEr*ffia cow, she wanted to cut. She tookhold, went to move and wanted tocut."

"That's rare, when you startthousaMs of them and rarely dothey hook right up and try to cut.She was one of the very few that Ihave started in my career that didthat," explained Wood about whatmade this mare so special.

Wood added this about theworking style of Laney Doc andwhere she got it, "Laney Doc wasreal low headed. She was a realcow horse. She just locked on to acow. I've seen a tape of her motherand she was the same way--real lowheaded and locked on the cow."

"You had to fight her (Laney Doc)to get her to break off a cow andstop square because she wanted tocow up all the time," added Wood."A bunch of her colts are the sameway, it is hard to pull them off a cowand square up across the arena. They wanted to cow up al l the t ime."

Wood told the following aboutwhere that working style camefrom, "You don't see a whole lot ofQuixote's work the way Laney Docdid. Matlock Rose showed hermother in the Futurity and placedsecond. When you ask him aboutChristmas Four, he will tell you shethrew her nose plumb down on theground and she wanted to holdeverything."

An example of ChristmasFour's working style was profiledin the story "Matlock Rose" writtenby Heather Smith Thomas in theSeptember 30, 2001 issue of theQUARTER HORSE NEWS. Rose

il;; ilJi"rl. nr""r, n*lo their dispersal in 1988,Laney Doc came to her final home the EE Ranches ofTexas, Inc. owned by Bill and Jo Ellard. lt was about thissarne time that Guy Wood became the resident trainerfor the EE Ranches. When he arrived his good friend RoyCox told him that they had just bought Laney Doc. Woodreplied "You won't regret that."

Laney Doc's arrival at the EE Ranches was a part ofa plan. Jo Ellard tells us how she came to get Laney Docand how this mare was a part of a plan to raise horseswith emphasis on the female side of the pedigree. "Webought her ai the Fares Ranch Dispersion. Everybodywas getting out of the horse business at that point iniime. lt was during the downturn in the horse economy. Iwas getting in when everybody else was getting out."

She continued, "We had been in the cattle businessfor a numner of years and realized that the key tosuccess in anirnal breeding is the slrength of the dam'sside of the pedigree. So my goal was to try and puttogether a small but very elite group of broodmares."

Ellard went on to explain that she put together whatshe calls "The MaEnificent Seven." They are the maresMiss Doc O Lena, Grulla San, Freckles Aglow, SanJose Hickory, Pepsie Playgirl, Play Satin Beauty andof course Laney Doc. These seven mares would formthe foundation of the Ef fianches new cutting horsebreeding program and Laney Doc would rise to be thecream of the crop. This makes Little Bob a full brotherto Catechu, the horse that was the Grand ChampionStallion at the first AQHA Show in California" The dam ofBlanche was a mare named Mae West ll l. Mae West ll lwas sired by Bud Thomas by F & H BillThomas. F & HBill Thomas was sired by Buck Thomas and he is out ofFourth of July, (Keep this mare in mind as we go throughthe pedigree of Chubby.) Lady Loly Pop is the dam of Miss Miller 4. This mareis sired by Texas Miller by Sim's Yellow Boy. Sim's YellowBoy was sired by Yellow Belly by Yellow Jacket. Yellow

Laney Rey Too is the last foal out of his great mare. She is just starting her career in the cutting pen and itis going to be interesting to see what happens with hershow record after making the finals of the NCHA Futurity.

The part that Ellard sees as a key to the success ofth is l ine of horses is their intel l igence. She explained i tthis way, "One thing that has set the Laney Doc's apartis the intell igence o{ these colts. This has really surprisedme, we have some great mares and we've bred to somegreat stall ions. But the intell igence of the Laney Doc's isspecial. They are so smart. They're l ike Border Coll iesin that they're so smart. They can read cows better thanhumans."

El lard sees this intel l igence f lowing down throughthe l ine and she sees a bright future for this great familyof horses. They have seen it in Laney Doc's foals andnow her foals are producing it as well. The proof is inthe pudding. Laker Doc is the sire of foals that have wonover $850,000 and thus approaching the $1,000,000mark. This success is followed by DJ Tiacker whose 16pedorrners have earned $348,49S. When we combinethis success with the stail ions Kodo and Cat lchi justbeginning their breeding careers it appears that thelegacy of Laney Doc wil l l ive for many years. She is trulyone of our mares with more.
