1: HappyCT Helps people access the community transport they need to live a fuller life.

HappyCT

Goal of Nesta funding:

Support a first prototype to be developed in the Norfolk area, initially around a hospital. Open API to help manage community transport data.

Learning focus: Can community transport become more effective through using a platform to organise under-used transport resources and making it directly available to the public and to support bodies?

Funds: £25k over 9 months (January end date)

Team: Lead is Ali Clabburn of Liftshare -an experienced entrepreneurial organisation incubating the project.

Operating model:

Testing underway around bulk purchase from the Local Authorities

Support needs: Access to public sector providers/local authorities

2: SharesomewhereConnects underused community spaces with those who need them.

Share Somewhere Goal of Nesta

funding:Shape crucial next stage of tech development and business model post-launch. Enable initial sharing of spaces directly through the platform.

Learning Focus:

Can community owned spaces be used more effectively by organising usage data and making them directly available through a public platform?

Funds: £14k over 5 months (October end date)

Team: Youth United Foundation are the host body

Operating Model:

TBA - currently a charitable trust funded by member charities from uniformed youth volunteering sector

Support needs: Technology guidance and business model support

3: ChatterboxConnects refugees teaching languages to those who want to learn.

Goal of Nesta funding:

Move from ‘sole founder’ to team, from website to collaborative platform with linking and rating functions, develop at least one further university partnership.

Learning Focus:

Can refugees be supported to become language tutors, accessing paid work through a platform that initially links to university undergraduates?

Funds: £40k over 10 months (Feb end date)

Team: Mursal Hedayat is an ex Bethnal Green Ventures Founder, currently building her first team

Operating Model:

Has focused on block bookings via universities- is changing to focus more on individual access.

Support needs: Overall startup guidance (is being provided by BGV and year here)

Chatterbox

4:Milk AppRapidly gets donor milk to babies most in need of nutrition.

Milk App Goal of Nesta funding:

To create an app that will be used to manage donations. To test the app in Hertfordshire initially and find more NHS customers.

Learning Focus:

Can app-based donation service work on a sensitive issue for public benefit?

Funds: £40,000 over 7 months (Nov end date)

Team: Cancer research specialist Dr. Natalie Shenker is leading the work - supported by teams of volunteers and NHS staff - White October are tech lead led by Cath Conway.

Operating Model:

A CIC which is also partially funded by research grants. Service is sold to hospitals

Support needs:

Managing public messaging. Planning for growth, enabled by app.

5:BeamFunds flexible support and training for homeless people.

Goal of Nesta funding:

To set up the Beam organisation and run a small prototype working closely to get feedback from vulnerable users.

Learning Focus:

Can the crowdfunding plus support model can work to support vulnerable homeless adults to be empowered in their journey back to a stable life?

Funds: £40,000 over 8 months (Dec end date)

Team: Alex Stephany - an experienced entrepeneur- founder of JustPark

Operating Model:

Company with mission lock plus charity that processes gift aid

Support needs: Sounding board whilst team setup is in place - local authority and PBR contacts.

6: Trust on TapLinks carers directly with people who want direct access to a named carer.

Goal of Nesta funding:

To test the direct care access platform in Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties.

Learning Focus:

To find out whether a platform approach can improve how care is accessed, including by those in receipt of personal budgets.

Funds: £40,000 over 9 months (Nov end date)

Team: Entrepeneur team with some track record in care

Operating Model:

Commission on matches for self employed carers

Support needs: Local Authority links and experience around personal budgets and safeguarding

Trust on Tap

7: Taxi CoopLearns from pioneering drivers as they set up a taxi coop to improve workers conditions.

Taxi CoopGoal of Nesta funding:

To work alongside and learn from drivers as they set up a taxi coop in Leeds/Bradford.

Learning Focus: To discover how a cooperative taxi model can work in a city.

Funds: £25k over 7 months (Oct end date)

Team: NEF are leading learning and are intermediary with Driver coop

Operating Model: Worker owned model - potentially coop

Support needs: Comms and tech, input into report

8: Social Value ExchangeIncreases donation of resources from corporates to the community.

Social Value Exchange

Goal of Nesta funding:

To develop the platform with a live test taking place with Tower Hamlets

Learning Focus:

Can an online auction increase the effectiveness of the CSR donations through the Social Value Act

Funds: £40k over 10 months (Jan end date)

Team: Ex Local Authority entrepeneur who has been through Bethnal Green Ventures

Operating Model:

Currently purchased as outsourcing by Local Authority - transitioning to commission

Support needs: Communication of complexity, design
