From Rabbi Lubliner

C an you imagine a municipality that paid ten individuals NOT to

work so that they’d be available at all times of the day to ensure a minyan in the community? The idea may sound strange, but it does appear in the Talmud (see Mishnah Megillah 1:3). Because Jewish law believed it unseemly to compensate individuals to attend services, the rabbis created a

legal fiction by classifying such remuneration as lost wages, i.e., their inability to earn a living because they were perpetually on call for minyan. In the Talmud these folks were known as batlanim (in modern Hebrew the word has a pejorative flavor, used to describe

lazybones and loafers). Why would communities find it necessary to pay individuals to constitute a prayer quorum? Since only municipalities with sufficient resources could afford ten full-time batlanim, we’d expect the larger the community, the easier to get a minyan without having to pay folks to come to synagogue! Was the willingness to pay people to attend services a sign of widespread apathy and disconnect? Or should we see it as a positive reflection of a leadership so dedicated to communal prayer that it was willing to do whatever necessary to ensure a minyan . . . including the

expenditure of considerable cash? Many years ago I asked a young student, “Why do

you think rabbis pray?” His answer was golden: “Because they’d get fired if they didn’t.” In some communities clergy has become the modern counterpart to the batlanim of old – they attend services because not enough lay people do. At the Jacksonville Jewish Center, however, we are blessed with a strong core of minyan regulars: our clergy come to services because they want to daven with other Jews, and not simply because the Center would be unable to get a minyan without them. A rabbi’s commitment to daily prayer, preferably with a minyan, is one of the many practices which presage the decision to become a rabbi, rather than the other way around.

There’s an old Yiddish saying, “Nine rabbis don’t make a minyan, but ten shoemakers do.” When a community can no longer find ten, however, it becomes 9 shoemakers + 1 professional Jew, then 8 shoemakers + 2 professional Jews, and 7 +3 etc. . . .

until finally there aren’t enough professionals and the minyan’s existence comes to an end. After all, how many synagogues today would be willing to pay Jews not to work so that they’d be free to attend services when needed?

A century ago, the Zionist writer, Ahad Ha’am, famously observed, “More than the Jewish people have kept Shabbat, the Shabbat has kept the Jewish people.” One could just as easily say that more than the community has preserved minyan, minyan has preserved the community. What happens 720 times each year in the small space of the Witten Chapel creates and reflects community in ways both powerful and subtle. Mourners; yahrzeit observers; regulars of all ages who find fellowship on any given morning or evening; those who love creating instant community and making a palpable difference – over the course of 14 services a week, 60 times a month, 720 times a year – there is no more eclectic a group of people than those who attend daily minyan, whether once a year, once a week, or twice a day. Incredible diversity within the context of a single community . . . it lives right under our collective noses – not unlike a pair of glasses we hunt for, forgetting that we’re wearing them all the while.

Although the Jacksonville Jewish Center has had a daily minyan for more than a century, we usher in this year a program to recognize outstanding individuals devoted to the perpetuation of weekday worship because they understand how our minyanim foster religious cohesion and keep us strong as a community. In opting to honor Dr. Marco Rand as our very first Minyannaire of the Year honoree, we pay tribute to Marco’s dedication and passion, exemplified by his very capable Friday morning minyan captaincy. The diversity of our Friday morning group, its atmosphere of comfortable fellowship and growth in numbers are attestations to Marco’s leadership. We wish him and the Rand family a heartfelt mazel tov for an honor richly deserved.

In acknowledged Marco Rand’s contribution to minyan, however, we also recognize the thousands of people who, over the course of a year, make it possible for us to worship collectively. Above all we signal our determination to continue to strengthen the institution of daily prayer one day at a time, ten Jews at a time . . . which is to say, nine shoemakers plus you.

Bringing Purim and Pesah Together

T he month of March is probably my favorite month on the

calendar. Winter weather finally begins to give way to the spring, the countdown to the March Madness basketball tournament begins, and baseball Spring Training starts getting into full swing. These many highlights on the secular calendar give us a great deal to look forward to. The Jewish calendar also has

many highlights this month, especially so this year with Purim taking place during the first week of March, and Pesah following it up, beginning one month later on April 3rd.

Even though we tend to think of these holidays very differently, I have hard time examining them in a vacuum, but rather always view them as being connected to each other. Liturgically, a series of

special Shabbatot lead from one right into another connecting these two distinct holidays as part of a single unit. Seasonally, we think of both these holidays as springtime holidays, and even thematically, these two holidays share a great deal more than we might expect. Purim in many ways is the stereotypical Jewish holiday. “They tried to kill us, we won, let’s celebrate and eat.” We know the story well – Haman tried to orchestrate a plan that would kill all the Jews, but through the

resistance of Mordechai and Esther, the Jews were able to avoid this plot and remain free. How do we celebrate this today? By reading the Megillah, wearing costumes, attending festive carnivals and parties and dancing into the night. The revelry on Purim is generally palpable.

Pesah has its differences from Purim, but still shares many of the same thematic elements. We know the story of Pesah well too. After being slaves in Egypt for many years, the Israelites finally were set free and earned their freedom as they crossed the Sea of Reeds. How do we celebrate this today? By spending weeks leading up to the holiday cleaning everything in sight down to its molecular level to ensure that we eat not a single crumb of leavened bread. Something doesn’t quite add up here.

I remember a conversation I had with a friend a few years ago where he remarked that certain food products just tasted “too good” to be kosher for Pesah. “Pesah is about feeling like a slave,” he said to me, “and that means suffering and eating food that doesn’t taste good.” I told him that I think it is in fact just the opposite – it’s a celebration. Pesah is about us being free. It

is a festival of freedom where we celebrate the freedom we have in our lives.

How do we do this? As halakhic Conservative Jews, we still are obligated to follow the laws of Pesah, but there are things we can do to change our mindset on the holiday. It becomes very easy to get lost in the minutia – finding every last crumb, not wanting to eat with others because they may not follow the laws as strictly as we would like – and in that minutia, we can lose sight of the spirit of the holiday. Celebrating our freedom. We need to find a way to bring more of the Purim atmosphere into Pesah.

Yes we have our Seders where family and friends come together to study and sing and celebrate into the night, but that leaves six other days to celebrate. Why not use these days to continue the celebration, gathering together for more festive meals? The kashrut of Pesah can certainly be seen as restrictive, but I like to think of them more as uniting. Since I can’t eat out during these days, I might as well eat with my community. Some of my favorite memories in college were during Pesah, when for eight days of the year the Jewish community on campus came to eat together instead of each person following their own routine.

Keeping kosher for Pesah is not about being limiting and restrictive, but it is instead about creating community and finding occasion to celebrate together, just like Purim. Purim and Pesah can seem to be very different holidays, but they do have much in common. This year, let’s bring a little more Purim into our Pesah.

When You Come Around

Cantor’s Cantillations

G reen Day released “When I Come Around” in 1994 at the height of

the punk-band revival. I remember listening to the song for the first time and hearing the electric guitar play a distinct chord progression long before I knew what a chord progression was. “It’s the same thing over and over,” I said; the same four chords. In an age of

mash-ups, you can create a laundry list of songs with the same four chords, over and over again: Don’t Stop Believin’, Can You Feel The Love Tonight?, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Poker Face, Man in the Mirror, No Woman, No Cry. On one end, there are only 12 notes in a chromatic scale and only so many progressions

pleasant to the ear. At the same time, we may often critique a song as “sounding like x” as if it’s a shanda to use the same sequences. Yet no one confuses John Denver for Bob Marley, or Elton John for Lady Gaga. Each artist uses the same skeletal framework to make up a song, but makes the song their

own through the variations of vocal talent, rhythm, and instrumentation.

Over a two month span, we have/will be celebrating a number of special Shabbatot: Sisterhood Shabbat, Shabbat Shira, Martin J. Gottlieb Day School’s Consecration, Scout Shabbat, Men’s Club Shabbat, Safer Shabbaton, Minyannaire Shabbat, and Tiyul to Shul and Social Action/Justice Shabbat. The themes change, the rhythms of the services change, but the skeletal framework that makes up the Shabbat morning service remains the same. All of our themed Shabbatot highlight important organizations and initiatives within our community. At the core, however, is Shabbat. Shabbat happens every week, regardless of theme. When “nothing is going on”, are you still motivated to come to synagogue? Are you part of the (always accepting new members) Shabbat morning regular group? I invite you to enjoy our community for the next few special Shabbatot. I hope that by a little osmosis and by asking questions, that you can clearly hear the chords that make up our Shabbat service. May they be a base for greater comfort and greater creativity. I look forward to creating music with you “when you come around.”

Tiyul to Shul

T his year’s “Tiyul to Shul” is scheduled for Shabbat morning, March 21st. Over the years

we have found that participation in “Tiyul to Shul” is increased when we combine the morning with special services and programming for different constituencies. This year, we are connecting “Tiyul to Shul” to the concept of social justice, pointing us toward Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel’s famous comment, “I felt like my feet were praying,” made after he participated in the 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other leaders.

The fact that the week following our “Tiyul to Shul” Shabbat marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Selma to Montgomery march only makes the

symbolism all the more potent. For these reasons, this year’s “Tiyul to Shul” is entitled “Walking Together with Justice” and will focus on themes of tzedek in various ways.

As always, the goal of our program is to encourage as many people as possible to walk together to/from Shabbat services. Our hope is

that people will discover the joy of getting out of the car on Shabbat and appreciating one’s surroundings while strolling along; with the sense of Shabbat community that comes when people leisurely walk together to services. We remain cognizant that many of our members do not live within walking distance. Accordingly, we’ll continue to offer “Park-‘N-Walk” locales so that everyone can participate in “Tiyul to Shul.”

Ritual Recognition

I t all began with a minyan. Jewish individuals brought together in each other’s homes, some

through business ties, and others through family ties. Many who grew up together in the same European town. Who came to America at the same time. Together. In the morning and in the evening – to make a minyan and to daven together.

In the 1890’s, the beginnings of Congregation B’nai Israel developed from the gathering of the Jewish community for minyan. This was before the committees, the building fund, the Religious School. This was before there was a congregation. Each morning and each evening ten or more men met to pray, socialize and develop the makings of a community. Those individuals celebrated simchas, learned and mourned together, creating the foundation of the synagogue that was to come and developing life-long relationships, some that can still be seen in the inter-connectivity of many of our oldest families. More than 115 years later, while some aspects of the minyan have changed, much more remains the same as it did in those La Villa houses in 1902.

Minyannaires’ Shabbat, which we will celebrate on March 14th, will shine a light on our long standing congregational minyan. It's longevity speaks volumes about the type of congregation we belong to. You will not find a Conservative congregational minyan that meets daily for shaharit, minha and ma’ariv for hundreds of miles in all directions. But more importantly, you will find a true sense of community when you enter the chapel doors.

For many, attending minyan began with the need to say kaddish for a loved one. Soon, they realize the camaraderie in the room and decide to continue to attend minyan for themselves and to enable others to recite kaddish. Not all continue a daily commitment. Each minyan is special, with members selecting a specific day and service to attend each week. A minyan captain takes responsibility for a service and communicates with members to ensure that at least ten individuals will be in attendance and who will lead the service.

Our members that attend minyan are special. They give of themselves to ensure that there is always a place for someone to say kaddish, whether in the chapel or during a simultaneous minyan in a house of mourning. They embrace their minyan community and are proud of the individual service that they attend. And the best part is, there is always room for more. Weekday minyan can be the service that is most comfortable for one that wants to attend services, but may not find what they are looking for on Shabbat morning. There will always be an open door for those who want to try attending one of our twenty-one weekly services.

On Shabbat morning, March 14th, we will recognize our minyan participants. It will be an opportunity for the congregation to learn about why people attend and what they have experienced as a “regular”. It will also allow our members to see who attends on a specific day, perhaps creating a comfort zone to select a certain day to attend yourself.

It will also be a day to show pride for the 115 years of our minyan and our members that have made it such a special experience. Please join us as we show our admiration and appreciation to our members that attend our daily minyan.

When the Religious Life Community met to discuss

Minyannaire's Shabbat, it was decided that we would

create an annual award for the Minyannaire of the

Year, and select someone who served as an example

to all those that attend minyan. Criteria was set that

the honoree would show leadership, participate in

services and assist others in being able to lead and

follow along, and show a true commitment to our

congregations minyan. For the inaugural honoree, the

committee was proud to select Marco Rand.

Marco grew up in New York. He received his BA

from Queens College and his dental degree from the

University of Pennsylvania. After serving in the Air Force,

Marco moved to Jacksonville to start what became his

life's work at the Veterans Administration Outpatient

Clinic, eventually serving as the clinic's Dental Unit

Chief. He has also served as an assistant professor at

the University of Florida College of Dentistry.

Marco grew in his religious life after his move to

Jacksonville. He is a long time member of our board

and has served on the education and religious

committees. He served as chair of the religious

committee from 2003-2005 and still sits on the

committee. He developed the skills necessary to lead

services, chant the haftorah and read the Torah,

something he does each year on Rosh Hashanah.

He made the decision to attend minyan soon after

his children graduated from school, relieving him of his

Sale of Hametz The Torah tells us that during Passover, “No leaven shall be found in your houses for seven days” (Exodus 12:19). The rabbis understood this to mean that one could not own any hametz during the holiday. To prevent the financial hardship that would result from discarding all of one’s leaven on an annual basis, the rabbis developed a legal mechanism whereby an individual could sell his/her leaven to a non-Jew for the duration of the holiday.

PLEASE REMEMBER that even if you plan to be away from home for the entire holiday, you must still sell all the hametz you own. Similarly, should you own other property, or store leaven products in your office, you must sell the hametz stored in those locations as well.

While there is no charge for the selling of leaven, it is customary to include a charitable contribution with the “Sale of Leaven” form. Checks may be sent to the Jacksonville Jewish Center for Rabbi Lubliner’s Discretionary Fund, or you may send your checks directly to the following causes: the JFCS Food Pantry, and/or MAZON - A Jewish Response to Hunger.

PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM AT RIGHT and return it to the Rabbi’s office with your tzedakah donation to be received no later than noon on Wednesday, April 1. Since Jewish Law requires hametz to be sold no later than Friday morning, the deadline is a firm one of necessity.

A sign up sheet is also available in the Witten Chapel.

(...from page 6) role as morning chauffer and opening up his schedule.

He adjusted his schedule at work so he could attend the

Friday morning service. He evolved from a new

attendee, to a "regular" and eventually assumed the role

as the minyan captain – a responsibility that includes

outreach to people to ensure that a minimum of 10

people will be in attendance and the assignment of

people to lead the service.

As Marco sees it, it is the role of the minyan captain

to make sure that there is a good base of regulars to

attend so not to rely on mourners and people observing

a yahrzeit. He is very proud that over the 15 years he

has been a minyan participant, that he shares the

experience with good reliable people that will (almost)

always be there for Friday morning minyan. They know

that they attend not just for themselves, but also for the

people who need them. Marco sees the importance in

involving as many people as possible and feels

fortunate that the Friday morning minyan possesses a

number of people that can lead services. But what is

really special is the opportunity to sit with someone to

help train them to lead services and the spirited singing

that is part of the morning service.

"Minyan is the epitome of community. We are there

to help people in their hour of need then they are

dealing with a recent death or for the yahrzeit of a loved

one. The minyan can be a friendly welcoming group

that can greet and talk to the people coming to say

kaddish. They may become more regular attendees if

we are open and reach out to them to be a part of our

minyan community."

Marco is a wonderful man and a great

representative of the hundreds of people who make up

our minyan community. It is our honor to celebrate him

as our Minyannaire of the Year and look forward to

sharing this Shabbat with the entire Center community.

Sisterhood

O n January 31st, Center Sisterhood

honored our Torah Fund Campaign donors and presented this year's Horty T. Gendzier Woman of Achievement award to Robin Morris. Robin has been a strong supporter of the

Torah Fund Campaign and a leader within the Center Sisterhood for over 30 years.

Robin exemplifies the goal of the Torah Fund Campaign; Women Ensuring the Future of Jewish Education in her role as an educator at the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School. While wearing her “Morah Rachel” hat, she has been teaching at the Center for over 37 years. Robin also attended Ivriyon at the Jewish Theological Seminary – an in-house intensive program for non-Israeli Hebrew teachers from around the world.

In addition to celebrating Robin and the Torah Fund

Donors, the nearly 300 members of the community in attendance enjoyed a performance by New York University’s premiere Jewish A Capella group, Ani V’ata.

For more information about the Torah Fund Campaign and how it supports the seminaries of the Conservative Movement, visit www.jtsa.edu/Support_JTS/Torah_Fund or contact Lara Werwa, this year’s Sisterhood Torah Fund Campaign Coordinator at [email protected].

I would like to thank all of the Sisterhood members that

have volunteered this month and helped make our events and programs so successful. It was exciting to have at least 100 women contribute to Sisterhood Shabbat, the Israeli Art Show, the Torah Fund, and baking Hamentashen.

A special thank you to our chairs Leora Holzer, Carol Matoren, Aviva Kaplan, Elinor Snow, Etta Fialkow, Lara Werwa, and Sara Willens. I am so pleased with the diversity of women participating in Sisterhood.

Please join us for our next Hot Topic on March 18. More information to come soon!

Always, Marjie Rogozinski

B uilding on the success

of last year’s “Whack-A-Haman” game, seventh graders at the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School are

again collaborating with Jewish Interactive, a software development company based in Israel and South Africa, to create an interactive app that will be available on iTunes.

In this year’s game, called “Race To The Red Sea,” players must escape from ancient Egypt by surviving various obstacles, such as lice, hail, and locusts. Describing the game as similar to Temple Run 2 or Subway Surfer, student Rebecca B. describes the game as “educational but really fun at the same time. It’s by kids for kids, so that is pretty awesome.”

As part of the project, the students have Skyped with software developers in both South Africa and Israel, and are learning many real-world skills.

“They are obviously learning about the holiday of Passover in a fun way,” says teacher Shana Gutterman. “What has been amazing is watching the kids work in teams on project management, marketing, game development, art design, and audio engineering. These are skills they’ll take with them beyond middle school”

“Race To The Red Sea” will be available on iTunes the week before Passover begins.

Middle Schoolers Working as Software Engineers

S tudents at the Galinsky Academy schools are raising money to help families dealing with

illness to forget their pain for a little while. On Tuesday, February 17, Martin J. Gottlieb Day School and DuBow Preschool students of all ages

held a rally and fun run to benefit the Memories of Love Foundation, an organization based in Jacksonville, which works to create joyful memories for children whose parents are facing a life-threatening illness.

Students at the Bernard & Alice Selevan Religious School held their own rally and run on Sunday, February 22. The children collected sponsorships from their families and friends prior to the fun run, and on “Memories of Love Day” the students learned about the organization and the families that it has helped. The fun run consisted of a one-mile loop around the school. Parent Jennie DeBardeleben remarked that, “It’s wonderful for the children to learn about and support such an amazing organization that’s based right here at home. It’s a special day for everyone.”

T he Jewish Educators Assembly, the professional organization of educators in the

Conservative movement, just completed its 63rd Annual Conference at the University of Maryland. Lois Tompkins of the Jacksonville Jewish Center was among those in attendance. The four-day gathering brought together congregational school principals, heads of Solomon Schechter Day Schools, early childhood directors, bureau and agency personnel and informal educators from all across North America and Israel.

The theme of this year’s Conference was “Engaging With Israel: New Realities/New Opportunities. Marc Rosenberg of Nefesh B’Nefesh and David Breakstone, Vice Chair of the World Zionist Organization were among the featured speakers. Additional sessions were led by the Center for Israel Education in Atlanta and the iCenter from Chicago.

Attendees previewed the new film Beneath the Helmet, a compelling look at the stories of four Israeli teens from diverse backgrounds as they enter the army. A highlight was a visit to the Israeli Embassy in Washington for a policy briefing and

questions and answers. Participants shared ideas and information on topics such as teacher supervision, report cards and evaluations and standards for Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Another round of workshops showcased new ideas and materials from organizations including Chai Mitzvah, the Institute for Southern Jewish Life, United Synagogue, JTS and Behrman House’s Online Learning Center. Participants also had the opportunity to view new texts, materials and resources as they browsed vendors and exhibitors. Torah study sessions were held, and a great deal of networking took place with participants sharing ideas and information over meals and get-togethers.

The conference provides a rich opportunity for professional growth, exploration of new trends and ideas and acquisition of concrete programs and materials to bring home to each school and synagogue.

For more information about the Jewish Educators Assembly visit them on the Web at www.jewisheducators.org.
