Educational background

Marco Cortesi was born in 1962 in Locarno, Switzerland. He starts to approach music seriously toward the age of 20, after graduation in high school. Marco attends several Italian summer camps with Joe di Jorio, Jim Hall, Mick Goodrick and other well-known artists. From 1985 to 1991 he enrolls at the Swiss Jazz School Bern, where he has the opportunity to study and play with Frank Sikora, Rachel Gould, Woody Shaw, Sal Nistico and others.

Festival apparences, collaborations and published works

After graduation at SJS (in ’91), he starts a musical and artistical relationship with american and european musicians and starts work on a regular basis with Gene Calderazzo in a trio that features special guests such as Franco Ambrosetti, Walt Szymansky, Jon Davis, Pietro Tonolo, Mark Abrams, Dario Deidda, Jeff Gardner, Rick Margitza, Javier Girotto, Giorgio di Tullio, Alberto Bonacasa and many others.With these projects (with different line-ups: from the trio to the quintet) he performs at numerous Swiss and Italian festivals and in clubs in both countries, such as Blues To Bop Festival, Estival Jazz Lugano, Swiss Diagonales, Brissago Jazz Evenings, Jazztage Dübendorf, Jazz Festival Willisau, Montreux Jazz Festival, Festival für Alte Music, Zürich, etc.In 1997 he’s called to London for a tour with the Gene Calderazzo Quartet. That same year the Swiss label Altri Suoni releases his first CD “Triblu”. In 1999 he works with the N.Y pianist Jeff Gardner, for a successful tour and a fruitful recording session. During the fall of 2000 and the spring of 2001 (on a sponsorship by Swisscom) he’s on tour with prestigious tenor sax player Rick Margitza (ex Miles Davis Band). His second CD “Why Not”, with Rick Margitza as guest player, is released in late November 2000 by Altri Suoni. In 2002 he’s called in Napoli for a serie of concerts and plays at Estival Jazz (Lugano) as special guest in Franco Ambrosetti’s project”Grazie Italia”.2003/4: Together with the trumpet player Hilaria Kramer he puts up various projects in the field of electronic music, such as “Jazzotronix” and “Zappatronix”, a tribute to Frank Zappa that involves music and videoart. In that same period of time he starts a collaboration with the prestigious lute player Luca Pianca in a crossover project between baroc music and jazz. With the composer and viola player Walter Fähndrich he’s working on improvised music in the classic contemporary field.His third CD “Falzer” is released march 2006 by Membranerecords.2005: Zappatronix is performed successfully around Switzerland and Portugal with a 14 gigs tour.2007: July-Zappatronix is invited to Zappanale 17th ed. In Rostock(D) and in Berlin for the opening ceremony of the Frank Zappa Strasse. He puts up the quartet“ENS Live”, with the drummer Giorgio Di Tullio, bass player Yuri Goloubev and Max Pizio on saxophones.2008: The first release of the band is “Live in Monte Verità”, by Vibra Records, Italy.2009: TCB Music, Switzerland, releases the second ENS Live work: “Stan-Darts”. Marco Cortesi is the author of all the music played by his group, all the tracks featured in his CDs, and the movie soundtracks he has performed. He also writes music for jingles, radio tunes, and electronic compositions for professional use in the media business.

Born in Mantova in 1966 where he attended to classical studies, and he got his diploma in clarinet with the maestro Giovanni Bertolini. In this period of academical studies, he carried on a busy concert activity, performing in duo or in other chamber groups with the piano player Marino Nicolini. It is necessary to underline that it was with the saxofone, played in all his band and with the clarinet, that he began to have a great consent both in Italy and abroad. Actually the study of the jazz repertoire, most of all with the clarinet, gave to Mauro Negri a lot of awards and reviews: in 1984 (just 18 years old) he was ranked the second best first sax in the competition by RAI in Milan, and with the RAI orchestra he collaborated for several years; in 1985 he was considered "the best absolute musician" at the national competion "VIVA I GIOVANI". In the same year, he won the first prize at the national competition for saxophonists of Agliani d'Asti. Then he was considered the best talent by "FARE MUSICA" magazine. In 1989 he was called to give a seminar about John Coltrane at the Teatro Nuovo in Verona. In 1991 with his group "TRAPEZOMANTILO" he was awarded at the national competition "JAZZ CONTEST". In 1992 he won the prize "TOP JAZZ" as the best Italian talent. As regard to his concert activity we have to remember that he played with some of the most representative jazz musicians all over the world: Aldo Romano, with whom he has been playing since '98 in the French group "Corners", Kenny Wheeler, Billy Cobham, Albert Mangelsdorf, Lee Konitz, Sal Nistico, Tony Scott, Steve Lacy, Paul Jeffrey, Tommy Turrentine, Manfred Schoof, Kim Lark, Marc Abrams, Nataline Cole, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Furio Di Castri, Franco D'Andrea, Giovanni Tommaso, Enrico Intra, Tullio De Piscopo, Ares Tavolazzi, Franco Cerri, Gato Barbieri, Jimmy Cobb. In 1990 he was in the finals at the European competition in Leverkusen. In 1987 he took part at a tour in Russia with the jazz orchestra of Florence. In 1989 he recorded his first CD for the Splasc(h) Records called "Patarau". In 1991 he recorded a record for the "DIRE". In the same year he won the "Jazz Contest" with his quartet "TRAPEZOMANTILO" with which he recorded other three Cds. He played in the quartet of the French drums player Aldo Romano, with whom he gave some concerts in Paris, Monaco, Hong Kong, Guadalupe, Amiens. With this group he recorded a CD for the "Label Bleu" called "CORNERS". On October 1998 he was a member of the Academic Orchestra of the Scala Theatre for two concerts with Enrico Rava, Giovanni Tommaso, Gato Barbieri and Jimmy Cobb. With Enrico Rava he recorded a CD which was published with " MUSICA JAZZ" ,October 1998 called "CERTI ANGOLI SEGRETI" and on April 1999 he recorded an other CD of Enrico Rava's for "Label Bleu" together with Roberto Gatto, Giovanni Tommaso, Stefano Bollani and Barbara Casini. From 1996 he has been making up the "Mauro Negri S.F. Group" with which herecorded a CD for the Splasc(h) Records with title "SO FUNKY". In the record we find Enrico Rava as special guest. The quartet is made up by Bebo Ferra at the guitar, Christian Meyer at the drums and Fiorenzo Delegà at the electric bass and Mauro Negri at the clarinet. With this quartet he performed in several Italian festivals like Iseo Jazz, Jazz Italia, Merano Jazz, Mantova Jazz, S.Severo, Sussara Jazz, Ovaro Jazz.From March 2005 till 2007 has been the first alto-clarinet of the “Vienna Art Orchestra”.

Born in Moscow, Russia, in 1972. After many years of a splendid career in classical field,in December 2004 Yuri moves to Milan and dedicates himself exclusively to exclusively to what he considers his “true call”: jazz music. In his "adopted home", Italy, he rapidly attracts attention of many important Italian musicians, and this brings him numerous collaborations with such artists as Enrico Pieranunzi, Rosario Giuliani, Franco Cerri, Glauco Venier, Claudio Fasoli, Giovanni Falzone, Guido Manusardi, Gianni Cazzola, Massimo Manzi and many other musicians from overseas: Franco Ambrosetti, Gwilym Simcock, Ron Horton, Mike Serin, Michael Rosen, Klaus Gesing, John Law, Bill Smith, etc.Aside from that, since circa 2001 he has already been performing with some of the important American and European jazz artists as Paul Bollenback, Shawnn Monteiro, Christoph Spendel, Adam Nussbaum, Miles Griffith and others. In 2007 joins the jazz faculty of Centro Professione Musica (CPM) in Milan.Yuri participates in various known jazz festivals like Umbria Jazz (Italy), Saalfelden Jazz Festival (Austria), Brecon Festival of Jazz (England), Porsche Jazz (Italy), Iseo Jazz (Italy), Loulé Jazz Festival (Portugal), Boheme Jazz (Russia), St.Petersburg Jazz Spring (Russia), Jazz Carnival (Ukraine), Jazzahead (Germany)...

Receiving his Master’s Degree in double bass as a soloist and chamber music performer from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1995 (where he has also studied classical composition), in 2002 Yuri becomes the youngest bass player ever in the history of both USSR and Russia to be awarded the prestigious title of the Honored Artist of Russia by President Putin. In 2000 the well-known magazine “Harper’s Bazaar” places a feature article on Yuri Goloubev, and the Italian “Jazz Magazine” places a large interview with Yuri in 2006.

From 1991 till 1992 Yuri performs with the famed Bolshoi Opera, and from 1992 till 2004 holds a position of the Principal Bass with one of the world’s most noted chamber orchestras with one of the world's most noted chamber orchestras - Moscow Soloists directed by Yuri Bashmet. In this way he collaborated with some of the top classical artists: Thomas Quasthoff, Lynn Harrell, James Galway, Gidon Kremer, Barbara Hendricks, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Spivakov, Maxim Vengerov and many others. Yuri made his appearances in a great number of world’s most important venues including Carnegie Hall (New York), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Musikverein (Vienna), Salle Pleyel (Paris), Royal Albert Hall (London), Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), SydneyOpera House, Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Megaro (Athens), Gewandhaus (Leipzig) and in such festivals as Bath Music Festival (England), Omaggio a Roma (Italy),Casals Festival (Puerto Rico), Festival di Perth (Australia), Prestige de la Musique (France), Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival (Finland), Hong Kong Festival of the bArts - to name just a few.

Has also performed with such orchestras as l'Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala and l'Orchestra Filarmonica Toscanini and wrote a number of jazz and chamber music works as well as bass transcriptions and arrangements. Some of these works are published in Russia, Germany and the United States. In addition, he has lead diverse master classes in the field of both classical and jazzmusic in the United States, England, Ireland and Italy.

Yuri’s playing and compositions are featured on over 40 CD recordings, some of them – as a leader or co-leader.
