Marco Berera Shares
Turning a Flask
Our May demonstrator is Marco Berera who will be turn-
ing a flask.
The demon-stration will feature pieces
in different stages. Marco will have a short PowerPoint pres-entation, where he will ex-plain in detail how to go about making a complete flask. There will be some face plate turning, friction fit chucking
and between center turn-ing. How to get a conical flask neck opening (using a simple home made tool) will be included. Marco will end with ex-plaining how to turn a wooden flask Stopper
with a perfect
fit.
Marco grew up in Swit-
zerland. In completing his apprenticeship as a Patternmaker Marco finely developed the skill of exactness in his work. After moving to Canada Marco worked with Woodworking Guilds
where he entered several
Thanks again to all of you who have volunteered to make this a better club. The regular wood raffle was a success and will continue each meeting. Please bring in quality wood that has minimal debris associated with
it so clean-up is easier.
The annual picnic will be on August 18. The project this year is “Scoops” so think about your unique design, ma-terial, etc. We also have a side art demonstration of some type (past has been pottery, jewelry making, greeting cards, basket weaving, etc.) – if you or your
significant other has a great craft idea or hobby that oth-ers would enjoy, lets us know
ASAP.
In the past, we raffled off a “Play Day” for a lucky per-son to “turn with a noted woodturner”. Stay tuned for details of additional Play
Days..

yearly challenges to construct unique creations out of 2”x4”x96”. Monthly meetings, classes with well-known
woodturners and competitions in Woodturning Guilds also raised his skill level, and challenged him to create
one of a kind artistic turnings. Marco experiences great satisfaction in bringing to fruition the visual concepts
that inspire him daily through nature, ceramics, fashion, industry, etc. He takes joy in a good technical chal-
lenge and always strive for excellence in craftsmanship. He hopes his pieces, whether artistic, functional or
whimsical, will bring a smile to your face.
Important Announcement Concerning Membership Renewal
Dues for 2013 are $35. The quoted amounts are for an emailed newsletter. Mailed hard-copies for those that do not have email will cost $12 more to offset the costs of printing and
postage. Everyone should verify his/her information in the database as they renew
membership. Please bring checks or cash to the club meetings and see Jim Steck near the en-
try door. The club would like to see enrollment completed as soon as possible. Remember, it
costs money to run this club. Take care of your fair share.

compendium Turning to Art in WoodTurning to Art in WoodTurning to Art in WoodTurning to Art in Wood. This is a book celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the Wood Turning Center Wood Turning Center Wood Turning Center Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia. We now have it
in our Library. This book is full of ideas and is a great source for inspira-
tion. The publisher gave me a generous discount on the price of the
book, so our club could add it to our collection.
Last month, our demonstration by Larry Hauch focused on turning thin-
walled vessels. The Library doesn ’ t have any books or DVD ’ s cur-
rently that focus just on “ thin “ methods, but we have several authors
that demonstrate their methods for creating hollow forms and I guaran-
tee that the finished vessels are millimeters “ thin. ”

DVD promoting Lyle ’ s own hollowing system with laser capabilities .

DVD. He has developed a series of bent turning tools allowing him to
hollow a wooden form through a tiny entrance hole, using a process he
calls “ blind turning” In contrast to Jamieson ’ s technique and tools,

Chainsaw Safety Recommendations
Let’s see, how many safety rules is this guy forgetting? Hmm, no
helmet, ear plugs, safety glasses, no gloves, no chaps, no florescent vest
to warn other of activity holding pull cord improperly. What else? There
must be something, mmmmmm.

Many Upcoming Club Needs We Need to Meet
This year’s nominations committee has already begun. There will be several officers to be replaced. We will be looking for a new president, Program Chair, and Jim Steck who fin-ished the last Treasurer’s term needs to be re-elected (you will accept to run again, right Jim?) When Jack Wayne, Jack Frost, or Fred Floyd come to you to help out, give it serious thought. Our club is a great club, and you are needed to keep it great. This is a club, not a business, and
we are all important clogs in the wheel that makes it run. Step up and help out.
Other current needs are for a back-up person willing to bring the trailer to various spots. Contact a board member if you can help out. We also need a member to serve as Program
Chair back-up. Now working with Jack Wayne is pure bliss.
Picnic Plans Previewed
August 18 will be the date for this year’s club picnic. This year’s picnic competition will feature scoops, which were the subject of an earlier club demonstration. While there are several different categories of scoops, members may enter only one scoop in the competition. You have the usual choice of “standard” turnings or “ornamental” turnings. Then you can de-cide to make a large scoop, medium sized or smaller scoop. Start practicing to get that perfect
shape. More on the picnic later.
Earth Day the Seattle Woodturner Way
On April 20 several of our members met at the Bellevue Art Mu-seum to help celebrate kid’s day on Earth Day. Scores of tops were turned leaving scores of kids with happy glows on their faces. For the first time this effort was supported by Woodcraft and Rocklers (of Southcenter) by
their dona-tions of ma-ple for the
tops.
PlayDay Raffles Soon
Spend a day with John Shrader. Turn at and with Hal Johnson. Soon two members will win these prizes as a result of upcoming raffles through our club. John, whose delicate and un-usual turnings have created many “oohhs” and “ahhhhs” will share his techniques first. Later,
Hal will show how he creates his outstanding bowls. I hope I win.
