A word from Principal, Paul Kish

MHJH Student Testing / Late Arrival Middleburg Heights Junior High will engage in standardized testing this spring. These high stakes tests are conducted each year and students and staff have much experience in administering the exams. In public education this is the era of testing and designed purposes exist for the analysis and data study of the exams. The Ohio Department of Education is in the process of reconstructing the testing re-quirements and soon new tests will replace the current tests that are given. Re-gardless, the Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA) and the Collaborative Assess-ment Project (CAP) will be given at MHJH. These tests will be given over the course of 5 particular days. On each of these dates only test takers will be required to at-

tend in the morning at the normal start time. All other students not testing are not required to attend school until 10:45 at the conclusion of the testing session. For our MHJH ninth graders this late arri-val will be available for 5 total days. This is the equivalent to the 5 late arrival days that they would get if they were in the high school building for the Ohio Graduation Test. Buses will run their normal time and if taking advantage of late arrival then students/parents must provide their own transportation to school. The five days of testing in this regard are as follows:

Wednesday 4/30: OAA 7th & 8th grade Reading

Thursday 5/1: OAA 7th & 8th grade Math

Friday 5/2 : OAA 8th grade Science

Tuesday 5/13: CAP 7th and 8th Social Studies

Wednesday 5/14: CAP 7th and 8th Science

Safety Drill Conducted During Spring Break Local police, fire, and medical teams converged on MHJH March 25th to enact a security drill. The drill was conducted as a collaborative effort with many local emergency teams. The drill played out a scenar-io in regards to a report of "...shots fired at MHJH." Basically, what I witnessed was the role these groups would play after an event was reported. It was very interesting to see just how these individuals converged on the school, secured the setting, assessed injury, and transported individuals needing medical attention. Cones were scattered throughout the building that represented the injured; the cones had a descriptor of the type of injury visible. All of their steps are specific and expectations exist for the role of each emergency group. These are necessary safety procedures that must be conducted and must be practiced. I am proud that we live and work in a community that conducts these drills for our students and for the school community; school safety is an important endeavor. Athletic Eligibility / Fourth Grading Period MHJH has now entered the fourth and final grading period for the school year. A reminder for all par-ents and students that plan to participate in fall sports for next school year, especially our current 8th graders and 9th graders, that fall academic eligibility is identified from fourth quarter report cards. Stu-dents must attain a 1.5 GPA and have acquired a minimum of 5 credits. We want all students to be aware of this fact and we want students to be able to participate in sports. This is by no means a new policy or requirement; however, we want students and parents to be reminded of this expectation.

MHJH Academic Awards Night Scheduled for May 27th

Student academic achievement is always a high priority. Our BCSD and MHJH mission is based around this fact. Currently scheduled for May 27th at 7:00 p.m. we will conduct our first ever MHJH Academic Awards Night to highlight the high achievements of our top students. We are very proud of the hard work and dedication that many students have displayed throughout the school year. This evening will be a chance to spotlight those accomplishments. As with many things this school year this is a new endeavor for planning and preparation. We will identify those students and families that will be recognized and send out a letter of invitation. We believe that we will need to conduct the event in the main gym based on capacity. The gym will be arranged in a manner with student recipients seated in chairs on the gym floor and parents and guests arranged in the bleachers. The head table and podi-um area will consist of our MHJH Department Chairs and MHJH Leadership Team. Look for more info regarding this event in the near future. This should prove to be a proud night for the MHJH communi-ty.

Please consider participating, and encouraging your MHJHS Titan to participate in the 3rd Annual "Dash for Dignity" 5K run/1 mile

walk, on Saturday, May 10th at MHJHS. Our 2014 race proceeds beneficiary is Mr. Jason Suplita. After a four year journey of mis-

diagnoses Jason was diagnosed with neurological lyme disease. The disease affected his brain and he is currently going through treatment in Arizona, which will cost him and his wife up-wards of $40,000. It is unfortunate that we meet this couple under such sad and stressful cir-

cumstances, but we are happy to do what we can to ease some of their financial burdens. You can register for the race online at www.speedysneakers.com, by using the attached registrations form or by picking up a paper registration in the MHJHS main office. Early registration ends

Reporting a child absent

Please use the direct phone line for Attendance 216-676-0913. This leaves the main switchboard open for all other calls regarding school business. The attendance line is available

24 hours a day/7 days a week. A reminder to parents to please let the attendance office know when your student is out sick, going on vacation, arriving late, or leaving early. Please leave the name and grade of the student, reason for being absent, and whether the absence is going to be

all day or a specific time of the day. If you leave a message on the machine, make sure you say the date the event is occurring. The attendance line is available to leave messages regarding at-

tendance anytime during the day or night. MHJH needs to have notification from a parent be-fore a student leaves the building. Students who are feeling ill should see the nurse between the hours of 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. During any other time, a student should come to the school

office for help. Students should not contact parents via cell phone during the day to go home. If students do call, parents should call attendance to let us know you want your student to be ready to leave, and at what time.
