VERO BEACH — It is expected that apolice department will have storagespace to keep evidence from cases, firearms, ammunition, but they alsohave a special space for stuffed ani-mals, and now quilts.

Last week, members of Morning StarChurch of Vero Beach donated 30 smallquilts to the Vero Beach Police Depart-ment.

The quilts will be given to childrenwho are involved in domestic situa-

tions where law enforcement hasintervened, law enforcement officialssaid.

The quilts were vibrant, some withanimals such as elephants, frogs, andseahorses themes, others with cars andhelicopters and others in light pastelswith graceful dancers. All of the quiltswere just the right size for young chil-dren to cocoon themselves within theblanket’s warmth.

“These aren’t your grandmother’sbed quilts,” said Susan Rupert, one ofthe lead quilters.

“We wanted them to be kid-orient-ed, with bright colors and fun panelsand not a lot of piecing. They are com-fortable and easy to care for, you couldwipe your nose on them and thenthrow them in the washer without wor-rying,” Ms. Rupert said.

Mrs. Rupert said the church groupfirst began making quilts a little morethan a year ago for the Visiting NurseAssociation’s hospice house in VeroBeach.

“We had a member in hospice careand we wanted to make something tosay thank you to the people thatworked there,” Mrs. Rupert said.

Shortly thereafter, a donation ofquilts was made to the local veteran’scouncil, but the quilting ladies wantedto continue their project and give moreto the community, and when someonesuggested the police department, theyknew it would be the perfect place.

“We heard they typically give out

stuffed animals to the children whohave been victims of crimes, or havebeen removed from their homes, andnow they can give them a quilt tochoose from,” Ms. Rupert said.

The quilting group meets once aweek at the home of Morning StarChurch member Peggy Suchorski, whose garage has been converted intoa sewing room with multiple sewingmachines.

“I wanted to teach people how tosew and decided to do that with quilts.

We have a Jo-Ann Fabric and CraftStore in Vero Beach and the managerhas been so kind to us, been very goodabout helping us get things on sale, making sure we have coupons,” Mrs.Suchorski said.

Though the size of the sewing groupvaries from week to week, the quiltershave gotten quite good at workingtogether on the various machines, enjoying the creative process and each

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Podia-trists Nicholas Rutledge and MichaelMazziotta of Indian River Podiatry areaccepting new patients of all ages andencourage the community to seek footcare before an issue becomes serious.

Indian River Podiatry offers twolocations, one in Sebastian and one inVero Beach for the convenience oftheir clients and both locations offertop-quality customer service and thenewest technological advancements inpodiatric medicine, said Kristen Lin-sky, office manager.

Dr. Rutledge has been a part of thepractice for more than 15 years and Dr.Mazziotta came onboard three yearsago from Pennsylvania.

“At Indian River Podiatry, thepatients come first,” said Ms. Linsky.

“Our doctors try to accommodatethe patients as much as possible, theycome in early, or work during theirlunch or even leave late to meet withpatients. They really go out of their wayfor people,” she said.

The staff at Indian River Podiatryworks diligently to make sure allpatients are seen in a prompt manner, and most clients can been seen within24 hours of calling in for an appoint-

ment, Ms. Linsky said.“It depends on the time of day a

patient calls, but we can usually fitthem in same-day or next-day,” shesaid.

About 70 percent of the currentclientele at Indian River Podiatry isseeking treatment for their feet as aresult of an ongoing battle with dia-betes, Ms. Linsky said.

A lot of people with diabetes experi-ence neuropathy in their feet, or a lossof feeling due to nerve damage. Thesepatients come in regularly to have theirfeet examined by a doctor and oftenhave their nails trimmed.

“If they have a wound on their foot, they may not be able to feel it and itcould become infected. Individualswith diabetes are often more suscepti-ble to infection and most of them alsohave poor circulation in their feet andit makes healing more difficult,” Ms.Linsky said.

If left untreated, patients with dia-betes could face having to amputatetoes, a foot, or perhaps even a leg, soseeking treatment and learning footcare techniques from a podiatrist candefinitely improve the life of a patient, doctors said.

The remaining patients come in fortreatment of various ailments, includ-ing but not limited to: bunions, ham-

mertoes, foot or ankle fractures, wartsand ingrown toenails, Ms. Linsky said.

Several forms of outpatient surgeriesare performed in the office, includingsurgery for bone spurs and ingrowntoenails.

If a patient is uncertain what is caus-ing a problem in their foot, doctors atIndian River Podiatry offer diagnosticultrasound testing, digital X-rays and

peripheral vascular testing to narrowdown the diagnosis, the Indian RiverPodiatry website said.

fine hotel or even (if you live in a gatedcommunity) down at the clubhouse bythe pool!

But (as is true with all good things)there are a few “gotcha’s” that you have tobe aware of if you decide to take yourmachine out on the road.

One issue that causes a fair amount ofconfusion for the budding “road warrior”is the inability to send email from on theroad. Receiving mail is usually not aproblem but the inability to send mailwhen you are on a connection otherthan your home network is a complaintthat I hear quite a bit.

Now, not everyone has this problem. There are plenty of people out there whoare able to use their laptops whereverthey want and sending isn’t a problembut there are others who (try as theymight) can’t send an email when awayfrom home to save their life. The answerusually lies in what email service theirsystem is set up to use when the mailfails to send versus the email servicesthat works no matter where they are.

Confused? Let’s back track a bit andtalk about the typical home internetservice and what’s included. When yousign up for internet service for yourhome one of the things that you get withthat service is an email address. YourInternet Service Provider gives youaccess to the internet from home andsets up a username which typicallybecomes your email address. Then youremail program (Outlook Express,Outlook, Windows Live Mail, etc.) getsset up with your username, password,“POP” and “SMTP” settings. Now thePOP settings (POP=”Post Office Proto-col”) are the settings that tell your emailprogram from where on the internetyour incoming mail can be retrieved andthe SMTP settings (SMTP=”Simple Mail

Transfer Protocol”) tells your mailprogram where on the internet youroutgoing mail needs to go when youclick the “Send” button. The problemsending mail usually lies with the SMTPsettings.

You see Internet Service Providers takeSPAM very seriously and in an effort totry to thwart SPAM, some providers willprohibit relaying outgoing mail throughtheir SMTP servers. What this means isthat when an outgoing mail message isbeing sent from within their network, itgoes along without a hitch. But whenyou try to use your machine in a networkthat is different than network you use athome (maybe your home network isAT&T and the coffee shop you are tryingto send email from is Comcast forexample) then the SMTP server rejectsthe outgoing mail because it’s notoriginating from within its network butfrom some other network. The messagegets blocked as part of the serviceprovider’s efforts to thwart SPAM.

So what do you do? And why is it somepeople have no problem sending mailand others can’t?

Well, many ISPs have a different SMTPaddress for people when they are on theroad but one of the easiest ways to workaround this issue is to set up a free “WebBased” email service like Gmail so itdoesn’t matter where you are when youtry to send email. With an email serviceslike Gmail you can set up your SMTPsettings in your email program to pointto Gmail’s server and bypass your ISP’sSMTP settings altogether. It’s a simple fixand using a Web-based email servicealso lets you keep using the same emailaddress even if you move or changeinternet service providers. But that’s awhole other issue altogether isn’t it?

To the person with trashy neighbors

To the person with the trashy neigh-bors, if your complaints and requestshaven't worked, I suggest you take thebins back yourself as a friendly ges-ture. Maybe they will get the message.

Get your facts straightI work in education and I'm no fan

of the teacher's union but the writerneeds to get the facts straight. Iwould back Crist for governor beforeI would ever back Scott. He came into office and slashed the educationfunds along with his republicancounterparts. Now he is beginning togive some of that money backbecause the elections are approach-ing. Don't be fooled and think he hasadded money to education. My pay-check is less now than it was whenScott took office thanks to the cuts he

made to give tax breaks to hiswealthy friends. The children of thiscounty have suffered because of hiscuts. Don't take my word for it.Check the facts.

The police can make thesepeople drive correctly

It is time to get more police out onthe streets to stop these drivers fromthe way they drive.

Many of these drivers are not usingtheir signals and they do not knowhow to stop at the stop sign. Whenyou are turning, you must use yoursignals; when you are changing lanesyou must use your signals. When youcome to a stop sign, do not pass thesign and then stop; you must stop tothat the sign is in front of your car orwhatever you are driving. I reallybelieve that if a lot of drivers were todo their drivers test again, theywould fail. So get those police outthere and stop these drivers.

Food stamp factsGet your facts straight when it comes

to food stamps; it may surprise you:• 76 percent of food-stamp-house-

holds include children, veterans, eld-erly or disabled persons.

• The food stamp program has thelowest fraud rate of any federal govern-ment program.

• Every dollar spent on food stampsreturns $2 to the economy.

• No one in the U.S.A. should gohungry EVER! – especially children.

I would gladly pay my small share ofmy salary to the needy than to rich cor-porate welfare companies, the realwelfare queens, and to the greedydefense contractors, who get rich offwars. Why (is there) no complainingabout that? There is an $870-a-year

cost to the average taxpayer for corpo-rate subsidies.

Newsflash, many people do workand make so little that they still qualifyfor assistance.

Well, I am more concerned withthose who draw on it, who really needit and how little it really does cost ustaxpayers – $36 a year per average tax-payer for food stamps – as comparedto what we pay for our overblowndefense budget and handouts for sub-sidies for companies, like big oil.

Why are we paying for so many richcompanies to receive subsidies, whilethey pay their CEO big-fat bonuses?Where is the outrage here? It sounds tome like opposite wealth redistribution.Take the money that should go to thepoor and give it to the fat cats.

Obama remarksAfter learning of the Malayasia airlin-

er with 298 people on board, apparent-ly brought down by a Russian-built sur-face-to-air missile, President (Barack)Obama made a short comment with,"It looks like it may be a tragedy."

Gee, Mr. President, that's an under-statement.

He made a few statements and jokesabout his vice president Joe Biden. Onething for sure, Joe Biden gives the presi-dent plenty of information for jokes. Then, the president blasted the Repub-licans, and then he tore himself away tomake another campaign speech at afundraiser.

Our leader lacks leadership, but hisstrength is, you have to admit, he is atalking machine.

President Obama appears, manytimes, to be detached from reality, while going around world on apologytours.

We do see a sharp contrast in leader-ship from the Oval Office, when com-pared to President (Ronald) Reagan.

President Obama reminds me, manytimes, of a strutting peacock playingchess. He struts around the chess-board, knocks over all of the pieces andthen declares himself the winner.

After six-and-a-half years in office, Ibelieve anyone would have to admit,we expect more out a president thanwe are getting.

SERIOUS INJURIES

Home, business owners asked to takeaction against mosquitoes

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — So farthis year, 115 Florida residents from26 counties, including Indian River, have contracted chikungunya whiletraveling in the Caribbean, wherethere is an ongoing outbreak of thedisease. Three Florida counties nowhave local spread of the virus. Thisweek, the first locally acquiredinfection was identified on theTreasure Coast in neighboring St.Lucie County.

Chikungunya is a disease causedby a virus that occurs in many trop-ical regions. Chikungunya, whichmeans “to become contorted”,causes severe joint pain, headacheand fever, and is spread by bitesfrom only two of the 50+ kinds ofmosquito that occur in Indian RiverCounty. These two mosquitoes arethe “Yellow fever mosquito” and the“Asian tiger mosquito.” Most peoplerecover within a week or so, butjoint pain may last for months. There is no vaccine for the diseaseand treatment is only to reducesymptoms.

Yellow fever and Asian tiger mos-

quitoes occur in Florida, and canalso spread dengue fever. Control ofthese mosquitoes relies largely onthe actions of home and businessowners. These mosquitoes do notlive in marshes, ditches or ponds, but multiply in water-filled con-tainers around homes and busi-nesses. They travel only about 200yards to feed and are daytimebiters. “Success in control ofchikungunya or dengue will requiresubstantial community participa-tion to remove mosquito-producingcontainers from individual homesand workplaces. Mosquito controland local health departments canonly help, not do it all. Only you canprevent your home from being aproducer of mosquitoes that cantransmit these diseases to yourfamily or your neighbors,” says Dr.Don Shroyer, Medical Entomologistfor Indian River Mosquito ControlDistrict. Inspect your yard andremove water sources, such as:

•Empty water from potted planttrays and other containers

•Drill holes in garbage cans andrecycling bins

•Change birdbath and pet waterbowls at least once weekly

•Drain wading pools when not inuse

•Clean debris from roof gutters•Check tarps on boats or other

equipment that may collect water•Pump out bilges on boats•Use a water hose to flush water

gathered in bromeliads at leastweekly

Protect yourself against mosquitobites:

·Cover windows with screening oruse air conditioning

·Cover up with long-sleeved shirtsand long pants

·Use insect repellants containingDEET or picaridin following labelinstructions.

·Limit outdoor activity whenmosquitoes are most active

·Avoid areas where there are a lotof mosquitoes

If you are unsure of what thesemosquitoes or their larvae look like,or would like more information onchikungunya, dengue or other mos-quito-borne diseases additionalresources are listed below.

TREASURE COAST — They are wordsany parents would rather not hear, “Yourchild has lice.”

The pesky problem can not only beembarrassing for a child in school, it cancause itching and discomfort, and if leftuntreated, can spread throughout ahousehold, leaving all members itchingtheir scalp.

However, there is a new option in PortSt. Lucie that can alleviate the problem oflice and their eggs, commonly referred toas nits.

“Lice and nits is one of the number onereasons for absenteeism in schools,” saidThe Lice Boutique’s owner and certifiedlice remover, Cac Stiner. “The only way tocompletely remove lice from a head is togo strand by strand. That’s what we do.We practice the Shepard Method, whichis a certified way to remove the lice. Thereare so many wives tales out there andpeople really don’t know the facts aboutlice. We want to educate the public andlet them know what they can do to pre-vent the spread of lice and how to remove

them safely.”Ms. Stiner found herself facing the

problem of lice when her daughter cameback from college.

“My daughter came home with lice,”Ms. Stiner said. “The only place thathelped with the problem was the LiceSolutions in West Palm Beach. The clinicis run by Katie Shepard and that chancemeeting changed my life.”

Ms. Stiner found out while at the clinicin West Palm Beach that she too had lice. While undergoing treatment, she spokewith Ms. Shepard and decided that shealso wanted to open a lice removal clinic.

“I came home and told my husbandthat I was going to open a clinic and that’swhat I did,” Ms. Stiner said.

Ms. Stiner’s clinic is the only onebetween West Palm Beach and Orlando. They have treated patients from acrossthe Treasure Coast and Ms. Stiner givesinformative speeches to schools andgroups.

Some of the advice Ms. Stiner gives isto avoid head-to-head (or hair-to-hair)contact with other people to the best ofyour ability. This includes contact duringplay or other activities at school, home,

camp, sports activities etc. It is impossi-ble to stop a child from interacting withother children, so simply educate themon why head-to-head contact may bringa lice infestation.

Do not share hair brushes, combs, clothing, hair ties, hats, scarves, or towels.Disinfect brushes and combs by soakingthem in hot water (130 degrees or hotter)for five to 10 minutes. In the case of cloth-ing, washing in hot water is best and dryon hot for about 30 minutes.

Keep longer hair tied back tight in aponytail, braid, bun, or pigtails. It won’tcompletely stop lice from going to thechild’s head, but lice can only travel fromhair-to-hair. Lice does not discriminateand can infect any hair type. One of thetell-tale signs of lice is an itchy scalp, however not all of those with lice havethat issue. The “itch” is from an allergicreaction to the saliva that the bugssecrete, so if the person is not allergic tothe saliva, then there is no itching.

Contrary to popular belief, lice do notjump, or fly, from person to person. Theycrawl.

Ms. Stiner will soon be opening a loca-tion in Indian River County.

The Lice Boutique is located in Lexing-ton Plaza, 6839 South U.S. 1, in Port St.Lucie. For more information, visitwww.certifiedliceremoval.com or call(844) END-LICE (363-5423).

HoroscopesCommunity partner sought for book donation

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — One ofthe best ways to encourage reading isto provide the potential readers withan engaging story and putting it rightin their hands.

Vero Beach Book Center in VeroBeach is looking for a partner to pur-chase and donate books to elementaryschool students for an upcomingauthor meet and greet.

Award-winning author Jon Scieszkawill visit one, possibly two Indian RiverCounty schools on Aug. 28, to meetstudents and talk about his new bookrelease, “Frank Einstein and the Anti-matter Motor.”

“Jon Sciezska has been around for awhile as an author and his books aretargeted to reach reluctant readers,”said Cynthia Callander, director ofmarketing and publicity.

“We have booked the whole day withhim and he has an interactive presen-tation planned. I think it’s going to be amemorable thing for the children andif we could give children his books thatwould add value,” she said.

The Brooklyn-based author com-

bines adventure, humor, science andscience-fiction in this new series forthird, fourth and fifth graders.

The main character, Frank Einsteincreates contraptions from householdobjects, including two robots, Klinkand Klank. After a lightning storm, therobots come to life and act as Frank’slab partners in his next experiment, the antimatter motor, until they arestolen by Frank’s arch-nemesis, T. Edi-son, a press release said.

“Jon is a creative genius and he hasdone some really creative things in hisprevious books,” Ms. Callander said.

The book incorporates a lot of theelements that are introduced to third-through fifth-grade students in theirscience curriculum, and because thebook itself is literature, it even hadcross-curriculum potential, she said.

“I’m essentially seeking a third-partyto partner with us to make these booksavailable; it can be a business partnerand we would design a bookplate withtheir name on it as the donor, or itcould be an anonymous donor. Wecould arrange to have the partneronsite and involved in the event in afun way if they wanted,” Ms. Callander

Bringing an upscale sports bar to Sebastian areaSEBASTIAN — Wings, pizza pie and

burgers, oh my! Pizza Pie and Wing Company is having

their grand opening July 11, but has hadraving reviews during their soft openingand the newest addition to the Publixplaza is exactly what the area has neededfor a while.

The restaurant is owned by the Sarac-co family. Tony and Annie, a husbandwife team that keep their sons, Joey,Michael and John on their toes. Thewhole family helps out in the restaurantand assists in everything from behindthe bar to the kitchen.

Tony Saracco is the leader of thebunch and his passion for this venture istangible in the way he speaks andexpresses his hopes for the restaurant.

“We are a sports bar with class,” hesaid happily, gesturing to the comfort-able chairs and the full bar. “We like tosay God sent us here. We got off on thisexit on accident and when we saw thisspot, we knew it was perfect.”

The Saracco’s have owned otherrestaurants and they knew that thebiggest draws were the pizza, wings andsports.

“We are very family oriented,” saidJoey Saracco, who has been cleaningtables at family businesses since he wasfive. Now he is learning the businessinside and out. “We also know the wings, the pizza and burgers are the best intown.”

We were quickly sat and greeted by ourserver, Kristen, who was attentive andfriendly the entire night.

My guest and I ordered sweet tea and

were treated to a sampling of each of thedozen or so appetizers that the restau-rant has created.

We were treated to onion rings, corndogs, jalapeno poppers with cheddarcheese, stuffed mushrooms, fries, shrimp, fried clams and more.

The onion rings were large, deliciousand lightly battered. They were quicklyeaten and while my companion movedonto the poppers, I had a chicken stripand then ate a few of the clam strips.

We were soon delivered the chickenwings. I ordered the garlic parmesanwhile my companion ordered the honeybarbeque.

The wings were well cooked, hefty insize and the best wings that I have had inawhile.

In case we had any room left after thesheer bounty of food we were presented

with, we were also treated to a meatlover’s pizza, a recommendation fromthe family.

This pizza was a masterpiece. If youlike hunks of meat from meatballs, sausage, ham and beef, look no further. The pizza is piled high and the pizzasauce, specially crafted by Tony, wasdelectable.

The delightful meal was only accentu-ated by the wonderful service wereceived.

Monday through Thursday, childreneat free with a purchase of a soda andother various deals. They can alsoreceive baseball cards while dining.

The Pizza Pie and Wing Company islocated at 1451 Sebastian Blvd., Sebast-ian.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — TheBoard of Directors of the Indian RiverCommunity Foundation announcedtoday that Kerry Bartlett has resignedas Executive Director after six years ofleading the organization through aperiod of record growth and develop-ment.

Ms. Bartlett's resignation was effec-tive July 31, but she has agreed to stayon in a part-time capacity through theend of the year to give the Board timeto recruit a new leader to the position.

Ms. Bartlett was hired in 2008 as theorganization's first Executive Director.During her tenure, IRCF grew fromground zero to managing $24 millionin assets restricted for charitable pur-poses, the majority of which are indonor advised funds. IRCF has facili-tated an additional $21 million ingrants on behalf of its fund holders topredominantly local nonprofit organi-zations. Bartlett attributes IRCF's suc-cess to the Board's commitment tohelping connect local philanthropists,

professional advi-sors and civicleaders to thecauses they careabout most.

"It has been anhonor, both per-sonally and pro-fessionally toserve as ExecutiveDirector duringthe launch of Indi-an River Commu-nity Foundation. Iam proud of therelationships and partnerships wehave formed to build a stronger com-munity through donor-driven philan-thropy," Bartlett said. "With the organ-ization so strongly positioned, this isthe right time for me to begin explor-ing new avenues for my own profes-sional career development."

The Vero Beach native has no plan toleave the community, but will insteadbe taking her expertise to a nationallevel as a nonprofit consultant workingfor a broad range of organizationsthrough an affiliation with a premier

philanthropic consulting firm. IRCFBoard Chairman Bob Puff said theBoard accepted Ms. Bartlett's resigna-tion with appreciation for her dedica-tion and leadership.

"The fact that IRCF is in such anexcellent position today is a reflectionof Kerry's hard work and commitmentto our mission," Mr. Puff said. "She hadthe perfect combination of skills to besuccessful as our first Executive Direc-tor and her place in our organization'shistory is firmly cemented."

Mr. Puff sent a letter to IRCF stake-holders earlier this week notifyingthem of Ms. Bartlett's resignation andoutlining the Board's succession plan.According to Puff, a sub-committee ofthe Board will be managing the execu-tive transition. During the transition, the Board will continue to rely on theback-office administration and invest-ment management services of GreaterHorizons, an administrative companywith which IRCF has contracted sinceits inception.

"It will be business as usual fordonors and professional advisors whorely on us for philanthropic manage-

ment," Puff said. "Our contract withGreater Horizons and strong Boardoversight will ensure that our financialoperations, including donor accounts, investments and grants will continueto be handled in the same safe andeffective manner as always."

Mr. Puff said the Board sub-commit-tee is in the process of reviewing theBoard's vision and the organization'sneeds to identify the characteristics, strengths and expertise needed in thenext IRCF Executive Director. Theprocess will include seeking inputfrom stakeholders and advisors. TheBoard expects to successfully com-plete the transition or have interimleadership in place by Dec. 31.

“There is never a good time to lose avalued staff member," Mr. Puff said,"but Kerry's pledge to stay through theend of the year will give us the oppor-tunity to find the right successor tolead IRCF into a new phase of growthand development."

A trip to the Space Center is right around the cornerSummer is the time for family

vacations. Our family usually triesto travel somewhere close enough

that we can drive there in less than half aday. This year, our family trip was out ofthis world. And, best of all, the drive wasa short one!

Our summer quest took us toKennedy Space Center on Merritt Island. The Visitor Complex is a mixture ofhistory, the present, and the future.Kennedy Space Center is where some ofthe most monumental of all humanexplorations have begun. Just walkingonto the property fills one with a senseof pride in what we can and haveaccomplished as a species and as anation.

This isn't simply a place where wehonor our heroes and remember pastglories. This is a functional, workingspace port where we continue to makediscoveries each and every day.

Delaware North Companies Parks &Resorts has operated the Visitor Com-plex since 1995. The complex is com-pletely supported by those funds raisedby paid admission into the complex.

There are several admission options, with discounts for seniors, activemilitary and children. There is even anannual pass for those true space buffs.Admission includes Space ShuttleAtlantis, Shuttle Launch Experience,Angry Birds Space Encounter, GeneralBus Tour, IMAX Theater 3-D Films, special viewing for rocket launches, numerous shows and exhibits, Astro-naut Encounter, where you meet a reallive astronaut, and admission into theAstronaut Hall of Fame.

When you enter the Visitor Complexthe first building you reach is EarlySpace Exploration. Here you learn aboutthe Mercury and Gemini programs. There are artifacts from the first mannedspace flights and the original Mercurymission control consoles.

It was here that we had lunch with areal astronaut! As a child growing upduring the Space Race, I dreamed ofbeing an astronaut. To meet one inperson was a special thrill. WendyLawrence, a veteran of four shuttlemissions, who logged over 1,200 hoursin space, was our astronaut. After apresentation about her role in the spaceprogram as well as her background, sheanswered questions and posed forphotographs with everyone there. Icannot think of any theme park thatoffers time with a true American hero aspart of the day's activities.

To top it all off, lunch was pretty goodas well. We enjoyed a buffet of chicken, fish, a variety of vegetables, starches andtasty desserts. My kids were glad that theice cream was not the made-for-spacevariety.

The Rocket Garden features many ofthe rockets used in our space program. Iwas able to climb into the Gemini andApollo capsules to get an idea how trulycramped it was for our space pioneers. Itmay have been my childhood dream tobe in one of these, but my current bodyshape is not ideal for such a job.

We watched an IMAX 3-D film on theInternational Space Station. Seeing thisincredible home in space on such a largescreen is quite impressive and gives youa true idea just how amazing our currentspace program is.

The jewel of the Visitor Complex isSpace Shuttle Atlantis. As you approachthe building you are greeted by a ShuttleStack, the external tank and solid rocketboosters needed to lift the shuttle into

orbit. They stand 184-feet tall and giveyou an idea of the power needed to get aloaded space shuttle off the ground.

Inside, you begin your adventurelearning how we came to design andthen build a reusable spacecraft. Fromthat point you watch a shuttle launchand mission from inside a large roomwith the video surrounding you. Theneverything fades to black and you seeher. Atlantis.

I could feel my heart in my chest as Iwalked up to her. She sits there, as if on amission. Her payload doors open, sittingat a 43.21° angle, you get a full 360° viewof her. She takes your breath away. Iactually found myself emotional as Iwalked around her. Realizing that thisship went into space and returned 33times over her career and that she showsjust what wonders we can do can havethat effect on you. I felt so proud at thatmoment.

There are over 60 interactive exhibitsand high-tech simulators that bringAtlantis to life. You can create and runyour own mission and even experiencean actual launch. I could have spent myentire day just in this building.

From there we were off to the bus tour. From the air-conditioned comfort of ourbus were shown the new 21st CenturyLaunch Complex. This is where the newOrion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle willhead into space carrying the nextgeneration of explorers.

We drove past one of the massivecrawlers that NASA uses to carry rocketsand spacecraft from the Vehicle Assem-bly Building to the launch pad. Speakingof the massive VAB, it is one of the largeststructures in volume on the planet. Itstands 525 feet tall, covers eight acres ofland, and would take 240 billion pingpong balls to fill.

We got to see the Shuttle LandingFacility as well as the buildings where theOrion, Dragon, CST-100 capsules and

the Dream Chaser are being assembledand tested. We also saw the launch padswhere we left to go to the moon and fromwhere the shuttles took off.

Our final stop was at the Apollo/SaturnV Center. Here you walk under andaround, and even touch the largestrocket ever flown. This launch vehicleand capsule, that would have beenApollo 19, overwhelms you with itsstaggering 363-foot length.

The Saturn V transported 27 astro-nauts to the moon and back, fulfilling thedreams and imagination of a nation anda world. To think what it took to get thisbeast off the ground, all the way to ourmoon some 238,900 miles away andback, should cause one to pause andthink how smart and wonderfullyconstructive we can be.

Inside this mammoth building aremany displays. You can see a lunarlander as well as a moon buggy. There iseven a display with a piece of moon rockthat you can actually touch. Now, that'sout of this world!

When our day ended, everyone wasthrilled with what they had experienced. My daughter wondered why I was a bitemotional and I explained to her that myday's experiences made me very proudof my nation and us as humans. We cando such great and wonderful things, especially when challenged.

I hope that I live long enough to see usagain set foot on the moon or travel toMars and back. Who knows, maybe it willbe one of my children that I see step footon Mars.

The dangers of playing in the Florida sunAgood friend of mine had a

pretty big scare. He played in atwo-day golf tournament a

couple weekends ago. While heplayed well, the heat took a toll onhim that he was unaware of.

He arrived home and felt exhaust-ed. He flopped onto the couch andtook a nap. When he woke, he hadsevere leg cramps and felt light-headed. In a matter of seconds hepassed out. When he came to, hisspeech was more like that of a six-year-old than a young 40-some-thing. His wife called for an ambu-lance.

The next several hours were quitescary for his wife and daughters. They were worried that he washaving a heat stroke or worse. Thedoctors hooked him up to an IV andran tests. As it turned out he wasextremely dehydrated and his bodywas struggling.

Fortunately everyone actedquickly enough to prevent a trulytragic event. He received enoughfluids to get his body going againand he was able to avoid suffering astroke. He went home form thehospital in the early hours of thenext day and spent the next coupleof days resting and getting addition-al fluid into his body. Tragedy wasavoided.

With a heat index in triple figures, playing an outdoor sport such asgolf is likely not the best idea.

However, should you insist onheading out, please take the properprecautions.

Sweating is the most significantway that our body cools itself tomaintain a safe and stable tempera-ture. In humid climates our sweatdoesn't evaporate easily and ourbodies don't cool efficiently. Wesweat more and need to consumemore fluids to help our body staycool and perform well.

It's important to drink beforeyou're thirsty. You'll even play betterwhen you're not constantly lookingfor the next water cooler. Sportsdrinks such as Gatorade and the likehelp to replenish the fluids andelectrolytes that your body loseswhile perspiring. These drinks arealso loaded with carbohydrates thatprovide energy your body needs.

Fruits are best for giving you aboost of long-lasting energy. Candybars provide quick energy, but theireffects diminish quickly. Bananas, apples or peaches are easy to carryand easy to eat. Bananas also helpprevent the buildup of cramp-causing lactic acid in the muscles, a

frequent occurrence during exercise.Your most important concern

should be avoiding heat exhaustionor heat stroke. There are many waysto do that. Always wear shorts, andlight colored shirts. It may soundcrazy, but wearing an undershirt willalso help. The undershirt helps getperspiration away from your bodywhere it can evaporate more quickly, assisting in the cooling process. Ifyou feel too warm at the turn, stopby the clubhouse, grab a cold drinkand give your body time to cool.

While hats are great for keepingthe sun off of your head and face, they will make you warmer. Yourbody discharges most of its heatthrough your head. If your head ishot, so is the rest of your body. I liketo take my cap off when I'm ridingalong in the cart. The sun isn'tbeating down on me and the breezecreated by the moving cart helpscool me.

Some people like to take along anextra towel or two. They dampenthese towels at every water coolerand lay them across the back of theirnecks or over their heads when nothitting a shot, or wipe their face andarms with them to keep cool.

If you are taking medication, yourbody may need even more assis-tance to keep cool. Some medica-tions interfere with sweating, putting you at even greater risk.Check with your doctor to see if your

medication does this and whatmeasures you should take to lessenyour chances of heat-inducedillness.

If you begin to feel the effects ofextreme thirst, nausea, dizziness, headache, elevated temperature, ifyour skin looks pale, your pupilsappear dilated or your muscles startto cramp, there is a good chance thatyou are suffering from heat exhaus-tion. The best thing to do is immedi-ately get to a cool place and rest.Replenish your body by drinkinglarge amounts of fluids and eatinggenerously salted foods to help yourbody return to its normal balance.

Heat stroke is much more seriousand can quickly become deadly.Symptoms of heat stroke includehot, dry skin with a grayish tint, dilated pupils and a body tempera-ture that may rise to more than 104degrees. Anyone suffering from heatstroke must be treated quickly.Immerse the victim in a cool wateror ice bath and call 911 immediately.

We all want to enjoy our roundand play our best. If you're carefuland follow a few tips, you can makesure that your only strokes are thoseyou count on the scorecard.

areas, privacy is a major concern. You can go through the expense ofinstalling a physical wooden or resinfence or you can opt for an easierand less expensive solution: a livingfence made up of plants.

As an example, I am trying to hidean unsightly area in my yard thatincludes an air conditioning unitand water softener. I decided to use afast growing shrub called CherryHedge. You also may know them asSurinam cherry. They make one ofthe toughest hedges that you can get, this is especially important inFlorida. This plant belongs to theEugenia family, which is known for

fast and easy to prune hedgingmaterial. The Cherry Hedge canendure heavy shade or full sun withease. These plants will grow quiterapidly once established. You can aidyour plants future growth by plant-ing your new plants in a goodquality-growing medium (ie: cowmanure) or by using a good qualitytopsoil.

Spacing of your plants is a matterof personal decision but the general

rule is from 18 inches apart for a fasteffect hedge up to 24 inches apart fora more economical scenario. Onceestablished, these plants can growup to 2 feet or more per year. As withall new plantings, watering dailyduring the first few weeks of plantingis critical to future development ofthe plant. Once established, a coupleof times a week will probably besufficient.

Once your plant starts to rapidlygrow you are going to want to shapeand prune the plant on a regularbasis. The right tool for doing thiswill be essential for good results. Youcan use a good quality electric hedgeshear or you might opt to trim thebushes by hand. If you decide thelatter, be sure your shears are sharp

so you cut the branches and not ripthem. You can shape the hedge toyour liking and you can be as creativeas you like. Since these bushes cangrow from 3 to 8 feet in height, youhave lots of options for creativity!

There is one more bonus I forgot tomention: the plants grow smallcherry like berries that are edible. The fruits are often used in jams andjellies. It’s almost like the perfectFlorida plant! They are also verytolerant to high winds, which is onemore added bonus in our area.
