Hop To ItOn February 14th, all elementary students, K-5th, participated in “heart healthy”activities in the gym. Jump roping activities were enjoyed by K-2nd students while3rd-5th graders competed in basketball shooting drills. Winners in the basketballshooting drills were:

“National Read Across America” Day“National Read Across America” Day is celebrated on March 2nd,which is also the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This annual readingevent motivates and encourages all children to celebratereading. Big Sandy Elementary will participate in this readingcelebration by having various activities beginning on Monday,March 2nd - 5th. Each day will have a different theme and honor adifferent Dr. Seuss book. The themes are as follows:

If the elementary reaches their collective reading goal of 350 books during theweek, then the week will end with a birthday celebration complete with “Minute toWin It” games on Thursday afternoon. Students will compete with their Cub’s Dengroups. It is sure to be a fun time for all!

Parents, you can take advantage of this “Read Across America” week and readwith your kids at home too!

State PARCC and CMAS Tests 2020The testing window for these tests is April 6-24, 2020. All students, 3rd-10th, will need to be tested during this window. Ifa student is absent, then all makeups will need to take place before the 24th. As a parent, you can help your child byencouraging him/her to do their best, get plenty of rest, and eat breakfast each morning. Providing a water bottle atschool is also a great idea to help children stay hydrated and be able to think effectively. In the elementary, an incentiveparty is planned for those who take the tests and earn points to participate.

Toys are not allowed at school unless previously approved by a teacher for classroom purposes.

Monday SchoolRemember we have school on Monday, March 2nd and 9th, for kindergarten through 12th grade, and noschool on Friday, March 6th or March 13th.

Preschool/Kindergarten Round-Up

Preschool roundup will take place on Friday, April 16th, by appointment. Kindergarten roundup will take place onApril 17th. Parents can sign up for either roundup by calling Alisa in the front office, 719-541-2291. Since the roundup

will be taking place, there will be no school for kindergarteners on that day.

Our district has an eligibility date of June 1st. This means that your child must turn 3 or 4 (for preschool) and 5 (forkindergarten) before that date to be eligible to attend. If your child meets the school’s criteria, then he/she may signup for the screening. The purpose of the screening is to determine if the student is ready to begin school or not.

If it is recommended that your child is not ready for preschool, please understand that it is in the best interest of yourchild. If the teacher recommends your child be placed in a certain class, then that is the best academic placement forhim or her. Children develop differently and at different intervals. Time is a great thing for children, so never be in a

hurry to start them at any task before they are ready.

On February 25, 2020, the C.U.B.S. Crew sponsored a special luncheon to say thank you to our wonderful andsupportive community. We had 30 community members join us for a delicious meal of chili and cinnamon rolls

prepared by our amazing lunch ladies.

Teacher Shortage

Nationally and within ourstate, we are seeing a

shortage of teachers. AdamsState will be graduating 7

teachers this spring and have3 freshmen within their

educational program. We havea secondary science teachingopening for next year; UCCS

(University of Colorado atColorado Springs) will begraduating one science

teacher this spring.

FINANCIAL AIDSeniors - This is the time to be finishing up the Financial Aid process! Getting your FAFSA submitted in a timely manneris the key to being offered Financial Aid from prospective colleges. Work through the following steps by the middle ofMarch:

1. Apply for a FSA ID at www.fsaid.ed.gov. You will establish a username and a password to use whencompleting the FAFSA and as a signature when you have it finished and are ready to submit. The studentand his/her parents (1 ID works for the couple) need an ID.

2. Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Remember that the FAFSA has two parts – questions thatapply to the student and questions that apply to the student’s parents. I would be glad to help you workthrough the application if you have questions or are having problems. Be sure to include the colleges onyour FAFSA that you want your financial information sent to. If the student has applied to 3 colleges,indicate on the FAFSA that you want the results sent to all 3 of those specific colleges. If youcompleted the FAFSA this past fall and did not include some colleges that you are now interested in, you maygo back into your previously submitted FAFSA and add those new colleges at any time.

3. Your FAFSA will be processed and you will be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR). This report summarizes all ofthe information provided on your FAFSA. The key result from this report is your Expected Family Contribution(EFC) which appears in the upper corner. Carefully review your report. If corrections need to be made, go towww.fafsa.ed.gov and select “Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA.”

4. The colleges that you have been accepted to and who have received your financial information through theFAFSA process will send you a Financial Aid Award Letter. The college takes the Cost of Attendance andsubtracts the Expected Family Contribution resulting in your Financial Need. The award letter will list whatthe college offers you to help cover this need including: grants, work-study, and loans. They may also includecertain scholarships given specifically by that college. Private scholarships are outside of this process. Expectthe Award Letter/information to be posted to your account on the college’s portal. Some colleges are no longersending this information through the regular mail. Check your account regularly.

I am available to help community members (not just our high school seniors) in this process as well. Feel free to call meat the school if you need assistance with financial aid!

SCHOLARSHIPSSeniors should continue to work on scholarship applications. Parents – checkwith your student to see what progress he/she is making in this area. We are inthe “busy season” for scholarships so it is important that seniors stay organizedand keep track of due dates. It is important to know if a scholarship applicationis due to the recipient by a certain date or if it only has to be postmarked by thatdate. Check out the school website at www.bigsandy100j.com and click on the“Counselor” tab and then “Scholarships” for a listing of scholarships. This yearwe have been emailing the scholarship applications to our seniors. They maythen download them to complete on the computer or print them out to completein their own handwriting. Many of our local scholarships, including the MaryCasey Lasater Memorial Scholarship, the AmyWolverton Memorial Scholarship,the Glenn & Jennie Memorial Scholarship, the Simla Cubs Booster ClubScholarship, the Big Sandy Alumni Scholarship, and the T.R. HamacherMemorial Scholarship are due soon! The Alan Lasater Outreach FoundationScholarship applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year.

SENIOR SEMINARWe appreciate representatives from Farmers State Bank teaching a 13-weekpersonal finances unit. Each senior has been issued a debit card from FSB andhas been assigned a “job” which earns them each a weekly “paycheck”. Thestudents have budgeted for weekly expenditures including rent, car payments/insurance, and other regular debits. Each student who completes the unitsuccessfully will have their debit card “go live” with a $200 starting depositprovided by the bank. Thank you to FSB and especially Randy Pieper andMike Pettigrew for their time and commitment to our senior class each week!

SATAll Big Sandy juniors will be taking theSAT on April 14th. The best preparationfor SAT testing is to take rigorousclasses and to work hard in each ofthem. 11th graders will also be takingthe CMAS Science test in April.

ACTThe next ACT national test date is April4th and registrations for this test are dueby February 28th. The late registrationdate is March 13th. More information isavailable at www.actstudent.org.

PSATAll Big Sandy 9th and 10th graders will betaking the PSAT on April 14th. The PSATis being administered to all 9th and 10thgraders in Colorado in lieu of CMAS ELA

and Math tests.

CMASThe CMAS test window is April 6th – April24th. All 3rd – 8th graders will be taking

English Language and Mathassessments. 5th, 8th, and 11th gradersalso take Science assessments and all

testing is completed online.

...CounselorNotescontinuedfrompage6REPORT CARDS3rd quarter report cards will be sent home in March. Please remember that this report card serves as a mid-termprogress report. Students have through the end of the semester to raise their percentages. Only the final semestergrades (May) are posted on the student’s transcript and count toward cumulative grade point averages. The comingwarm weather can bring the temptation to “slack off” in the classroom. Remind your student(s) to finish the year strongby earning the best grade that they can in each course. I’ve heard many seniors say that they wished that they hadgotten better grades when they had the chance. Grade point average and SAT/ACT scores play an important role incollege admissions and scholarship contests.

SPRING BREAKSpring break can be a great time to visit potential colleges. A “road trip” to view college campuses not only givesstudents a chance to set foot on actual campuses but can also provide a great opportunity for family interaction!

PORTFOLIO ITEMSAs we finish the school year and many award certificates are given out, please have your student keep their certificatesto put in a cumulative folder. When your students are seniors they will be glad to have a folder full of examples ofaccomplishments that they can use when applying for scholarships. It is also a good idea to keep a list of communityservice activities completed that shows what service was completed, when the service was completed, the amount oftime spent on the service, and a name and address that can be used for a reference pertaining to the service completed.All of these items can be scanned for use in an electronic portfolio as well.

PERSONAL COUNSELINGAs always, if I can be of assistance in any way, please let me know. I am available to talk to students and communitymembers’ one on one and I ensure confidentiality. The only information that I am unable to keep confidential wouldpertain to potential harm to self or to another person. We are also glad to have Mrs. Alicia Lee serving as a studentadvocate who is willing to check-in weekly with kids who are facing life struggles. Thanks for your trust in us!

COLORADO BOYS AND GIRLS STATEAt Colorado Boys State junior boys will “experience real life America while they create and operate their own cities,counties, and state governments. They will elect their own Governor, Mayors, state legislators, and US Senators andactually deal with situations at all levels of government.” Tuition for Boys State is paid by local American Legion Posts.This year’s program will be conducted at UCCS May 30th – June 4th and applications are being accepted thru May 1st at

www.CoLegionBoysState.org.

At Colorado Girls State junior girls “develop leadership skills, confidence, and action-based understanding of thegovernmental process with the purpose of becoming patriotic, knowledgeable stewards of freedom and democracy.”Tuition for Girls State is paid by local American Legion Auxiliary units.
