most popular exercise in the world today. Its slow, relaxed movements and relaxation techniques have

shown it to be an effective exercise to prevent falls, improve health and quality of life. World Tai Chi

Day is Saturday, April 28, 2018 and our center Tai Chi Class will be demonstrating the techniques at

Mark your calendars now for the Center’s annual show of appreciation to all of our wonderful volunteers. This

year, we will all be the guests of McKendree Village for breakfast in their beautiful new Events Center at 4300

Lebanon Road in Hermitage. The breakfast and program will begin at 8:30 a.m. Since we are guests of

ECLIPSE MEMORIES

14 | Senior Spirit Newsletter

Giving Thanks for our Driveways

Nell Whaley, better known as “Aunt Nell”, lived about 3/4 miles down Hwy. 31 from our house. Her house was so small that only one person could be in it at a time. On Thanksgiving, when it was her turn at playing hostess for the feast, everyone had to line up single file to go in. On their way through, from front door to back, each person would pick up their food. Everyone formed a large circle in the back yard to eat. Their teeth didn’t have to chew their food because it was so cold their chattering teeth took care of that.

Aunt Nell was so embarrassed this last time that she decided she was going to have to do something to make her house at least seem larger. After several days, she came up with what she thought was a bril-liant idea. Her neighbor was a bit concerned when she told him what she had in mind.

“I want you to build me a stairwell in the hall. “ “Where do you want the steps to go to?” “To the other rooms upstairs.” “But you don’t have other rooms!” “Yes, but no one else will know that! And it will make the house seem twice as large.”

Nell was right. Everybody commented on how much larger her house seemed.

Another time I saw her with sparkles in her eyes was the day she wanted me to help her with a project she was working on. The gravel on her driveway had washed away over many years. And the last big storm had taken away the rest of the crushed lime-stone.

When I went down to her house to see what my aunt had come up with, she pulled out of her cedar chest an old bathrobe to which she had added sever-al large pockets onto the front.

The plan was for me to put on the robe, as soon as it was dark. Then I was to go house to house down the street, filling the pockets with her neighbors’ gravel. I gladly did as she asked, and she had a beautiful driveway. Of course, it took me 3 years to do it! But the odd thing was that Aunt Nell didn’t know how to drive. And what was worse than that she didn’t know how to drive was that she didn’t have a car! But she had a grand driveway.
