ALVERNO TODAY

Dear Friends of Alverno,

Wendy Finch-Burk Director of Development and Alumnae Relations

designed to update and improve our existing facilities and surrounding grounds. The changes are noticeable the moment you step on campus and we’re not done yet! As I write this, I can hear the construction crew outside digging up the area around the cafeteria in preparation for the landscape redesign that will continue throughout the property over the next several months. In addition, we launched our “Adopt-the-Library Campaign” to help raise funds to transform the current library into a state-of-the-art multimedia center. The response from our alumnae and past parents to this campaign has been so positive and we are very grateful to everyone who has shown their support for this project by making a gift. The campaign is still in full-swing, so if you would like to make a donation, please visit Alverno’s website at alverno-hs.org. We are also pleased to thank our alumnae and past parents who have donated funds and services to help support the improvements we are making on our campus, including gifts to the STEM Program and the Financial Aid program, in-kind donations to our Science Labs, and bequests to the Alverno Legacy Circle. Your support is what makes change possible and what motivates others to lend their help to our school. We look forward to having you back on campus so that you can see all these wonderful changes for yourself, including the Classes of the 1960’s and 1970’s who will be celebrating their Decade Reunion in the Villa in June and the Class of 1965 who will be celebrating their 50th Reunion at the same time!

As always, thank you for your continued support of Alverno!

Kindest regards,

The 2014-15 school year has been a year of change at Alverno and our entire school community is invigorated by the excitement of all that is taking place on our campus! The school year started off with a change in Administration as Julia V. Fanara became our new Head of School in July. She hit the ground running and is clearly enjoying the challenges and accomplishments that each new day brings. Her passion is contagious and we are all inspired by her new ideas and energized by her visions for the future of Alverno! We instituted several new academic programs, including the Accelerated Honors Academy (AHA) and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Program which has helped to engage and challenge our students. We offered more than $380,000 in Scholarships and Financial Aid during this school year to our current students in order to support their dreams of receiving a college-preparatory education. Over the summer, we began the Alverno Improvement Project which is a bridge project between Phase I and Phase II of the Master Plan. It was

Ttradition of educating knowledgeable young women for more than 50 years! Recent gifts from past parents have enabled Alverno to make needed improvements in the areas of technology, landscaping, and infrastructure. We have also received generous funding for our Financial Aid Program. We are grateful for their continued involvement in our community. Specifi c items that Alverno has been able to acquire due to the generosity of our donors include iPads for the STEM Program and Admissions recruitment, a 3-D printer for the computer lab, two defi brillators for the front offi ce and sporting events, and renovations to the front offi ce and science labs. Thank you for your continued support!

WHY WE GIVE TO ALVERNO

“Alverno is a place where a young woman can express herself and reach for the stars. The Alverno community helps all students to reach their full potential. The girls learn to speak their opinion, but also respect all opinions. The teachers are very creative in their classrooms and allow

students to think out of the box. The most important reason I give to Alverno is that it prepares the students for the real world, which means they are ready for college and life.” ~ Debbie Seanez P‘03, P‘13

“Alverno provides an outstanding education and religious environment for young women. We choose to support Alverno because, now more than ever, the world needs outstanding young women, who can make a difference with their compassion, integrity, and intelligence.” ~ Rita Mercurio Farfsing ‘72, P‘00

Tom Zimmerman P‘94 and Alverno Softball Coach

“My daughters Patty and Kathy have often commented that their experience at Alverno as graduates from the Class of 1994 was byfar the best and the most fulfi lling. They enjoyed creating friendships that have lasted through time. The educationalexperience along with being part of a very successful softball team was a great foundation for becoming solid business professionals. I have been involved with the softball program since 1989 with the arrival of Frankie Russo and Vince Robortello. During the last 25 years, I have always seen young women who have shared a recurring theme of taking personal responsibility and having respect for others. I have watched in awe how the school staff has done everything possible to set these wonderful students on the right path for success. These are some of the reasons that it has been easy to stay involved. I’m very honored and privileged to have had the opportunity toparticipate at Alverno.” ~ Tom Zimmerman P‘94

philosophy has always been to give to others unconditionally. Our biggest joy is being able to give and share with others in need. It is one of the most fulfi lling gifts in our lives. Despite our hectic schedules, it did not take much convincing for me to join the Board at Alverno High School. While we were already very involved parents, we always strived to make an impact where our efforts were most needed. My professional background, coupled with our intense desire to see Alverno function as effi ciently as possible with parent participation and, ultimately, student growth and success, led me to my decision to join Alverno’s Board of Trustees. Mike and I are passionate about Alverno’s mission, which empowers, encourages, and nurtures a strong self-image for Catholic female youth working to prepare for entrance into college. Alverno emphasizes individuality, integrity, values, and a strong work ethic, all of which are cultivated amongst a diverse student body, something which is representative of the world in which we live today. The complex heritage of Alverno’s population is both embraced and celebrated, as well as the idea that every girl should feel empowered and encouraged to strive to be whatever she wants to be. These are the reasons why we remain passionate and committed to helping Alverno foster their growth. As a Board member of Alverno, along with my husband, we are proud to represent such an honored institution and we hope that our role makes a difference in the futures of female generations to come.

Alverno Celebrates the Season at Candlelight Celebration

he Alverno community celebrated the holiday season on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 with a time-honored tradition. The annual Candlelight Celebration brought together alumnae, past parents, current families, students, and friends to share in the story of Christmas and get in the holiday spirit. “I love attending the Candlelight Celebration in the Villa T

every year. My sister and I, along with our mom, return to our Alma Mater to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas,” said Jennifer Tweddle Jesser ‘81. “You can’t help but feel the beauty of our faith lived out for all to share. Singing Christmas carols in the Villa with fellow alumnae caps the evening off with a sense of unity and fellowship. God is truly present and honored from the moment the candles are lit until the last person heads home. It is simply inspiring.” Following the journey around the outside of the Villa, guests are invited to listen to the Alverno student choirs as they sing Christmas carols followed by crowd favorites sung by the Alumnae Choir. As a special treat, Santa made an appearance and was on hand to take pictures with guests while they enjoyed warm refreshments inside the Villa.

Looking Toward the FutureDebbie Lasham Schweiner ‘73 Joins Alverno Legacy Circle

hen Debbie Lasham Schweiner transferred to Alverno during her sophomore year in January of 1971, she had no idea how quickly she would make friends and become involved. “I was feeling vulnerable and self-conscious that I was starting Alverno in the W

middle of the school year and I was wondering if I would fi nd any friends,” Debbie recalls. In true Alverno fashion, her fi rst day she met several girls in her class and was immediately accepted and made to feel like part of the group. “From day one I thought of Alverno as a haven, a place of acceptance where I could be myself,” she said. Debbie attended public school before entering Alverno and, up until then, never challenged herself to do more than what was required to pass. She recalled the challenging nature of projects her teachers assigned, and remembered feeling empowered because she knew her teachers believed in her ability to succeed. “Alverno is where I fi rst realized that I shouldn’t be afraid of completing the work assigned to me and doing a good job for the simple reason that the teachers wouldn’t have assigned such projects if they didn’t think we could complete them,” she said. Debbie’s education at Alverno has carried her through her life and helped her make choices to become the person she is today. “I learned so much at Alverno. The nuns and teachers were excellent motivators

and educators and I am grateful that I was lucky enough to attend Alverno.” As a student at Alverno, Debbie spent much of her time focusing on academics and enjoyed ceramics in her free time. She enrolled in ceramics classes locally at the Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre on a regular basis. Following high school graduation, Debbie went on to attend Citrus College where she earned a degree in Accounting and transferred to Cal Poly Pomona and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences. She spent time working as a secretary and bookkeeper but always wanted to fi nd a way to channel her desire to work in ceramics. In her free time following college, Debbie enrolled in a ceramics class at Citrus. “After four years of classes at Citrus I was offered a job teaching ceramics at Creative Arts where I have spent 21 years teaching the most wonderful students,” she said. “I am so blessed to spend my days doing what I am most passionate about... clay and teaching.” Debbie credits her ability to follow her dreams to Alverno. “My education and experience at Alverno gave me a solid foundation in academics, the sense of solidarity with women as friends, and the knowledge that we can accomplish whatever we

choose to put our efforts and focus on,” she said. She hopes that through her gift, Alverno will continue to encourage young women to follow their dreams and live their lives making a difference doing what they are passionate about. “An all-girls education has many merits, but is rare now-a-days. By contributing to Alverno’s fi nancial future, I am hoping the school will continue its tradition of empowering young women for many years to come.”

alverno improvement projectCAMPUS RENOVATIONS

By: Wendy Finch-Burk, Director of Development and Alumnae Relations

f you’ve been to Alverno recently, then there’s no doubt that you noticed the wonderful changes that are taking place on our campus, including upgrades to our school buildings and grounds. I Following the completion of Phase I of the Master Plan (the installation of pillars and wrought iron fencing along Michillinda

Avenue), the feedback we received from our school community was that they would like to see us use our resources to update the existing facilities on campus before we move on to any other building projects. With that in mind, the Alverno Improvement Project was created and is serving as a “bridge” between Phase I and Phase II of the Master Plan.

The Alverno Improvement Project began in Summer 2014 and, to date, we have completed the following:• Painted the exterior of the school and all the student lockers (funded, in part, by the 2014 Gala)• Installed new rain gutters on the school buildings• Updated the front offi ce with new paint, carpeting, and furniture (funded, in part, by two 2016 parents)• Installed new counters and resurfaced the cabinets in the science labs (funded by a past parent from 2007)• Purchased new safety equipment for the science labs and fi rst aid kits for the Emergency Preparedness Plan (funded by the 2014 Gala)• Acquired equipment and software for our STEM program, including 20 iPads, a wireless classroom learning network for the Math Department, and a 3-D printer for the computer lab (funded by a past parent from 1994)

With those items completed, we recently began construction on the landscaping component of the Alverno Improvement Project. The landscaping will take place in phases, beginning with improvements to the areas around the cafeteria and behind the science classrooms, which will take approximately three weeks to complete. Following this, the team will install a garden area where the tennis courts used to be and update the northwest section of our campus and our school terrace with the installation of new trees, shrubbery, and plants. Upon completion of the all the planting, the driveway that separates the Villa and the classrooms will be replaced, including the section that runs all the way down the West side of the Villa to Highland Avenue. The landscaping portion of the Alverno Improvement Project is slated to be completed before Graduation in June. At the same time, we have also launched the “Adopt-the-Library Campaign” to support the planned renovation of the school library into a state-of-the-art multimedia center. This project will allow students to use the latest in updated technologies and will provide access to electronic libraries all over the country, while also providing areas for individual and group learning. We are thrilled by all the changes on our campus and we look forward to sharing our new look with you! As always, thank you for your continued support of Alverno!

he Alverno Jaguars faced the Ramona Convent Tigers in Glendale on February 6, 2015 for their fi nal conference game of the season and celebrated Senior Farewell Night with 2-1 victory. The soccer team remained undefeated as T

they headed into the CIF playoffs after playing 10 regular league games with 9 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie. The Jaguars won the Horizon League title for the 14th time in 15 years and hosted the fi rst round game of the CIF playoffs on Thursday, February 19. They defeated the Garey High School Vikings in a 1-0 victory and went on to play against Shadow Hills in Indio on Tuesday, February 24. The soccer team played a good game and worked together against a tough team. “They had a nice grass fi eld, but we had to battle not only a good team but high winds that made it a defi nite home fi eld advantage for Shadow Hills,” said Head Coach Ken Berry. After a great fi rst half 0-0, the opponents scored two goals in the second half ending in a 2-0 loss for Alverno. “This year’s team was very well balanced. Our defenders, midfi elders, and offensive players all worked together excellently as a team along with many exceptional bench players,” said Coach Berry. “I am looking forward to having a great team again next year and hopefully go all the way to be CIF Champions.”

RETURNS TO ALVERNO

n addition to the rigorous academic schedules that challenge the students at Alverno, juniors and seniors must consider the future as they begin the college application process and think about what their futures hold. Twelve alumnae returned to Alverno on Friday, February 6, 2015 I

to participate in the 8-Minute Mentoring Program and share their careers with students. Each of the mentors shared a different career for students to consider as they begin to make decisions about college. Alumnae who attended the mentoring program work in a variety of fi elds. “I thought the mentoring program was great for the students,” said Lauren Capoccia ‘01, Registered Nurse at Huntington Memorial Hospital. “A lot of them were unsure of what they wanted to study in college, let alone what career path to choose, and I was no different when I was at Alverno. Even if they weren’t interested in my career, one of the main points I wanted to get across was to make sure that whatever they end up choosing as a major in college or career path, that they truly are interested in the subject and enjoy their work.” Some of the other jobs presented to the students included Marraige and Family Therapist, Mediation Judge and Family Attorney, Event Planner, Dentist, Police Offi cer, Veterinarian, Outreach Coordinator, Assistant Professor of Oncology, Program Manager and Program Supervisor for different organizations, and Senior Specialist for the American Cancer Society. “This was my fi rst time participating in the program,” said Diana Phillippi ‘78, Event Planner and business owner. “This is an exceptional opportunity for the students to learn about a variety of career options. As a result, I will be mentoring two of these young women on the event planning industry. I look forward to it being a win-win for all of us!”

1983Erin Fleming When our family cat, Bacon went missing in December of 2014 I found it diffi cult to get all the information and help I needed in one place. At the time I had the idea that we could better help others in the community by posting a resource area to the city’s website. Not long after I had this idea, there was a posting in the South Pasadena Review newspaper looking for people to serve on the Animal Commission among other commissions. I applied and met with the Mayor of South Pasadena. He appointed me to the Animal Commission in January for a three-year term. As my son, Landon, said, “It’s like it’s Bacon’s gift to you, so you feel better.”

2005Briana Bailey Briana graduated this past December with her second Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management from Northern Arizona University’s Online Program. She has spent the last four years working in hospitality serving as the Assistant Director of Catering at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club and as the Logistics Manager at Global Technology Community, a small conference production company located in Monrovia. Her two-and-a-half years of hard work paid off when she was recently offered a position within the sales department at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, CA. She moved to San Diego this February but is back in Los Angeles often to spend time with her boyfriend and three dogs. [email protected]

Class Notes1964The Class of 1964 started a new tradition of getting together not just at reunions, but every few months. On Sunday, January 11, a group from the class gathered for brunch at the Panda Inn in Pasadena. They enjoyed visting with each other and enjoyed their brunch in a private room. The Class of 1964 plans to do this every 2-3 months, either at a restaurant or at someone’s home for a pot luck. Please contact Bridget Marshall for information about the next gathering at [email protected].
