A Legendary Past, Preserved for the Future:

The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation was formed in 2008 with the goal of preserving the historical artifacts, documents and photographs that trace the evolution of the community from its early days as a sugarcane plantation into its modern era as one of

the fastest growing cities in Texas. Today, the Foundation works with Sugar Land companies and residents to assemble, document, preserve and exhibit a collection of Sugar Land’s remarkable history.

The Foundation operates a museum that is open every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. The museum is currently housed in the old Engineering and Personnel Building at 198

Kempner, right next to the iconic 1925 Char House. Admission is free, and features such treasures as artifacts from Imperial Sugar Company, video presentations, maps and

aerial photographs of Sugar Land. Volunteers are on hand to tell you more about Sugar Land and its evolution from a company town to the incredible city it is today.

An informative docent led walk is also featured the second Saturday of each month. On March 9th, the walk features a tour of Sugar Land’s oldest building: the Lakeview

Auditorium. You will hear about the restoration of this treasure and of its historic and cultural significance. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12-18 and children under 12 are free. The walk begins at the Museum promptly at 10 am and lasts about an hour and a half.

To learn more about the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation, please visit www.slheritage.org.

YOGA And PilAteS PRivAte inStRuCtiOn

The Cross Creek Fitness Center is now offering yoga and Pilates private and small group instruction.

Yoga focuses on physical postures, called “asanas,” together with breathing exercises and meditation techniques to increase flexibility, strength, balance and promote stress reduction and body awareness. Classes can be designed to be more active, purely for relaxation or somewhere in between.

Pilates is a systematic whole body conditioning routine with emphasis on core stability, correct posture, spinal alignment and breath. Pilates increases strength, flexibility and total body awareness.

Private and small groups can be tailored to specific needs using one or both disciplines, whether for general health and fitness or for a specific need or condition. To learn more about yoga and Pilates instruction, contact April Zieschang at [email protected] or 281-344-0078.

Shafer Elementary: Who are Fred and Patti Shafer?

We all know that Shafer Elementary is a school in our community, but who was the school named after? Who are Fred and Patti Shafer?

Perhaps you’ve seen or met the Shafers. You’ll find them mentoring students on a weekly basis at Shafer Elementary or in the cafeteria passing out forks and napkins. But their involvement in Katy ISD goes back for many years - before Shafer Elementary was built.

In 2000, Fred Shafer took over the helm of Katy ISD’s special education program as Executive Director for Special Education, Counseling and Psychological Services making it a state recognized, award-winning program for Katy ISD. Fred also established the Behavior Transition Program for students with the most severe emotional and behavioral difficulties, research based programs for children with autism, a state-of-the-art audiology clinic and the Therapeutic Intervention Program for medically fragile students.

After teaching for 16 years in the classroom, Patti Shafer began to see herself in a new role as an administrator when she and her husband moved to Katy. In Katy, Patti served as assistant principal at McDonald Jr. High, principal at West Memorial Jr. High and opened WoodCreek Jr. High in

2008. She now shares her amazing energy, instructional expertise, and deep love for children with the next generation of teachers and as a field supervisor for the Region 4 Education Service Center.

Be sure to say hello to the Shafer’s next time you visit Shafer Elementary. Likely, they will be there continuing with their passion for education and helping students.

Huggins Elementary Things are for sure “Hoppin’ at Huggins!” It has been a great school year so far at Huggins Elementary, and students and teachers have hit the ground running this semester. The school’s 1950s theme has kept everyone “movin’ and groovin’,” and many more great activities are in store.

In February, Huggins hosted the “Sonnapolooza” event and the “Sweetheart’s Dance.” These were great events sponsored by Huggins’ parent organization to help foster relationships with moms/sons and dads/daughters. Thank you to these parents who work hard every day for Huggins’ students.

In March, Huggins is hosting “Hands on Science” programs for each grade level. Parents volunteer to lead Science experiments in labs that are grade appropriate - such a fun and engaging time for both students and parents! March also kicks off Huggins’ “Watchdog” program which will put a dad on campus every day.

Ruby-thRoated hummingbiRd

Preferred habitat: Gardens - anywhere suitable flowers are found.

Seasonal occurrence: Very common March through May and mid-July through mid-

October. Uncommon summer and winter.

notes: Particularly common in Houston during fall and spring migration

(August - October and March - May). Some remain here and breed in the

summer, and there are a very few who over-winter. Both sexes have green plumage, but only the adult male

has a crimson throat. See chart of fall occurrence for Ruby-throated Hummingbird on the Upper Texas

Coast, prepared by Don Verser, for more information
