Happy March everyone! I am not sure if the old adage about March coming in as a lamb or a lion
has a chance because our winter seems like it has been so long and cold. I can only hope it will
start like a lamb and warm up. I think the students hope it warms up so they are able to go outside
for recess.
I hope that everyone took the time to really emphasize the importance of reading and how one’s
ability to read has a big effect on most of the things we do in life. Reading is not only something we
should do during reading month but always. I hope that everyone enjoyed reading month. I know
the students enjoyed the different activities we had during reading month. All the time your child/
ren spend reading will help us reach our school improvement goal in reading comprehension. The
third grade students will travel to Richardton for the author visit on March 5th.
On February 8th at 8:30 am, Dakota Assemblies was here to present “Hex Yourself”. The students
seemed to enjoy the presentation a lot. They were very attentive and respectful. The presentation
taught the students to have good character traits. A few of the students had the opportunity to assist the
presenter perform his magic tricks with the emphasis on believing in oneself. The students did a great
job.
The third quarter ends March 22nd, and the report cards will be ready for conferences. Parent-Teacher
Conferences at TRE will be March 26th and 28th from 3:30 to 7:00 pm each day. Please watch for conference slips coming home with your child/ren. If your conference time does not work with your
schedule, please contact the teacher to reschedule your conference.
All families that will have a child attending preschool and/or kindergarten at TRE in the fall of the
2019-2020 school year, please come to the office at TRE and register him/her on March 26th or March
28th during parent-teacher conferences. If you are new to the district you may register any time from March 26th-28th by stopping in at the office. Registration forms are available on the school’s website at
www.richardton-taylor.k12.nd.us. Copies of an official certificate of live birth and current immunizations are necessary if registering at TRE for the first time. It is important that we get an accurate count for
planning purposes. Even if your child is in preschool this year, please call the office or stop at the school
so we know your intentions for the fall.

Tis the
Season for
Testing at
TRE!
NDSA begins
on March 18
for grade 3.
NWEA testing
will be in April
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each
of the students and their parents that participated
in the fall Reading for Education fundraiser. Thanks
to you we raised close to $265 for our special projects account. Some of this money was used to
buy different items for reading month. I am so
appreciative of your support. The spring online Reading for Education fundraiser is during this
month. It costs nothing to participate. All you will have to do is supply some email addresses, and we
receive 50 cents for each address. Information
will be sent home around March 22nd. I hope that
you choose to participate.
I am not sure if the cold weather has kept the stu-
dents cooped up too much, but it seems like we
just can not get rid of the bug. We have had some
cases in which students have tested positive for
influenza so please encourage your child/ren to
wash their hands and to not put things at school
into their mouth.
Parents, if there is something happening at home
that may have an adverse effect on your child/ren,
and you think it would be helpful for us to know at
school so we can best help your child/ren, please
let us know. We would like to support your child/
ren, and it would help us understand why there
may
be a change in your child/ren. I am not ask-
ing that you give any personal details, but
just a heads up if there is something hap-
pening that would cause stress in your
child’s life. A couple examples might be: a
death in the family, an unexpected illness, an
accident, a parent having to leave unexpect-
edly for an extended time, or a loss of a
family pet. At these times your child/ren
may need that extra support that we could
offer. It may be hard for your child/ren to
stay focused in school during these times,
so it would give us a better understanding of
what’s going on with your child.
Oh, ‘tis the season! The window for NDSA
testing opens on March 18th so the students
in grade 3 will be taking the test. The TRE
students will be taking the NWEA assess-
ments again this spring. They will be taking
the NWEA assessments in April.
I would like to welcome the new families that have joined us recently. We are very happy
to have you, and I hope you find your time
here a rewarding experience. As always, please feel free to come in to have a conver-
sation about your celebrations or concerns.
I would love to celebrate with you or help find a way to work on your concerns. My
door is always open.

Parents / Guardians
I would like to kindly remind you of the need
for you to call the TRE office when your child/ren are going to be absent. It is im-
portant for you to call the office staff so the
absence can be recorded as an excused
absence and so we know your child/ren will
not be here. The office staff calls the par-
ents/guardians of children not in school if
we have not heard from the parents/
guardians and we worry about the safety of
your child/ren. I know some of you text, call
or send a note to the teacher, but many
times the teacher is busy and unable to an-
swer cell phones or text messages or let the
office staff know that your child is going to be
absent. If you need to call early in the morning
or after office hours, we have an answering
machine, so please leave a message.
It is also important to call the TRE office if
there is going to be a change in your child’s
after school schedule, so we can make sure
that your child gets to the right place. If we do not hear from you before school is dismissed,
we will have your child follow the normal schedule. We would appreciate your attention
to this matter.

Superintendent , ,, , Mr. Bautz
I recently participated in an education panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Stark Development Corpora-
tion and West River Business Center in Dickinson on February 19, 20019. The theme for the panel discussion was
“Educating the Future of Stark County.” The panel consisted of Superintend Wade Northrop, Belfield; Superinten-
dent Dr. Shon Hocker, Dickinson Public Schools; Superintendent Steve Glasser, Trinity Catholic Schools; and Su-
perintendent Calvin Dean, South Heart Public School. Panelists were asked to provide a bio, prepare a 2-3-minute
speech summarizing their district’s highlights, accomplishments, challenges and needs. needs, as well as participate
in a short question answer session with a moderator.
My self-biography and some of the information I presented at the panel discussion are included below.
Brent Bautz is the superintendent of the Richardton-Taylor School District. He is married to
Rebecca Bautz, and they have 3 children; Bradyn (9), Gabby (6), and Maddison (3). He
graduated high school from New England Public, and received his B.S. in Elementary Edu-
cation degree from DSU, and his Master of Education degree from the University of Mary.
Brent taught fifth grade and coached football, basketball, and track for 6 years at New Eng-
land Public. He then worked at the Bisbee-Egeland School District as an elementary princi-
pal and superintendent. He assisted the Bisbee-Egeland School District in the reorganiza-
tion process with the Cando School District which became the North Star School District.
Brent was then employed by the Richardton-Taylor School District and has been a proud
member of the Raider Nation for the past 11 years.
After I created my bio, I decided that I would focus my 2-3-minute summary on the changes that have occurred in
our district since I was hired in 2007. In 2007-08, the Richardton-Taylor School District had an enrollment of 221
students K-12, of which 29 were open enrolled. Today we have 363 students PK-12, of which 76 are open enrolled.
The addition of preschool has been one of my proudest accomplishments.
Our taxable valuation has tripled, going from $4.6 million to $12.6 million. This is mostly due to the Red Trail etha-
nol plant and Halliburton frac sand plant. Without the additional increase in our taxable valuation, there would
have been no way possible to build a new school. I am thankful community leaders were progressive in bringing
industry and manufacturing to our community.
In 2007-08 we were ranked 51st out of 154 school districts for our total mill levy of 200 mills. Last year we were rank
6th out of 147 districts with a levy of 138 mills. 46 of the 138 mills are levied to pay for the school construction pro-
ject. Minto, Grafton, Nedrose, Fargo, and Fort Totten are the top 5 school districts, with Fort Totten levying the
most mills at 175.
We have increased teacher base salary by an average of $1,200 per year over the past 11 years, as well as increases
to their benefit package. In 2007-08 a beginning teacher earned $22,300, and now a beginning teacher earns $37,000.
Transportation cost have increased significantly from 2007-08, while our funding from the state has decreased. In
2007-08 we had 9 routes that totaled 174,000 miles, which cost $238,500, about $1.37 per mile. At that time, we re-
ceived $186,000 from the state. In 2017-18 we had 7 routes that traveled 148,000 miles, which cost $292,400, about
$1.97 per mile. Last year we received $181,200 from the state.
The Richardton-Taylor School District has made a lot of progress in the last decade. Thanks to our supportive com-
munities we now have a beautiful new school to continue to educate the future of Stark County for many years to
come.

March 2018……Dr. Misti Vogle
It is time to begin Spring events including Track and Field, Speech, Acalympics, Math Competition and Music Competitions. We welcome all the learning activities as we support students with their talents.
Parent –Teacher Conferences are Coming Up!
Richardton Taylor 4-12 grade parent-teacher conferences have been changed to March 25th and 28th after school. The Rich-ardton-Taylor The Richardton-Taylor High School has student-led conferences which take place at an appointed time and in-cludes the student, parents or guardians, and a homeroom teacher that supported the student in preparing for the conference. I want to stress the importance of student-led conferences in providing consistent support by both teachers and parents/guardians.
If a student and parent/guardian misses a student-led conference, students will be scheduled to meet with the secondary principal to provide students with a student-led conference. Some concerns have been brought to our attention regarding parents that may want to visit with multiple classroom teachers following student-led conferences. In meeting student and parent needs, we are providing both the student-led conference and time allotted where parents-guardians may visit with classroom teachers.
During student-led conferences, students will show and explain their learning and progress for their courses. Students will also review their NWEA test scores and show parents a school-wide score chart. While reviewing test score information, students will be able to complete a goal-setting worksheet for Spring NWEA testing. Spring NWEA testing takes place in April along with the North Dakota State Assessment. The Raider education community is working together in supporting students to progress in areas needed for future preparation according to grade level and college readiness. 7-12 grade students are encouraged to work with their teachers regarding areas that students can strengthen by asking instructors for guidance and learning objectives that students may practice. Support your child/children by communicating interest in student levels of achievement.
The NWEA test score chart is in the showcase on the brick wall in the multi-purpose room. Please review the chart during parent-teacher conferences.
Students will also share their progress in meeting the North Dakota Every Student Succeed Act through Choice Ready. Students paths show progress towards state initiatives in preparation for individual college, career or military readiness. Please see Choice Readiness Chart on the next page for your review.
School Survey
When you come for parent-teacher conferences you will have the opportunity to participate in a school survey that provides the school feedback regarding improvement in meeting student needs. Please participate in this survey so we may improve school services. You will receive survey information from your student/students during conferences.
Assessment
Students grades 4-12 will participate in the North Dakota State Assessment beginning Wednesday March 20th, 21st and 26th. It is important that students have adequate sleep and nutrition while focusing on doing their best on the assessment. The assessment in-cludes math, English and writing. We take pride in working towards our school im-provement goals in reaching proficient in these areas. Results will be displayed in a fu-ture newsletter once the school receives the results from the state.
Thank you for your support for education.
Enjoy your Spring!

What you can do
More ideas to add to help your student succeed in school by being in school.
• Locate potential sources of anxiety. If your child frequently appears upset or reluctant to
go to school and cannot tell you why, schedule an appointment with his or her teacher or school
counselor to talk about possible sources of the anxiety.
• Keep updated on school events and announcements. Read the school documents that
your child brings home and take note of important announcements and dates, such as back-to-
school night and parent-teacher conferences.
• Try to limit the amount of time that your child misses’ school due to medical ap-
pointments or illness. If possible, avoid scheduling doctor's appointments during the school day.
Allow your child to stay home only in the case of contagious or severe illnesses.
• Schedule family events with your child's school schedule in mind. Plan holiday cele-
brations or family trips during weekends or school vacations. In the case of family emergencies or
unexpected trips, talk to your child's teacher as far in advance as possible and set up a way that
your child can work ahead or bring important homework on the trip.
• Plan ahead. Encourage your child to prepare for the next school day by laying out clothes
the night before and helping to fix lunches.
• Promote good health. Make sure that your child eats a balanced diet with plenty of fruits
and vegetables and has opportunities to exercise every day through a sports team or playtime out-
side.
• Create a restful environment. Finally, make sure that your child can relax before bedtime
by doing something quite like reading rather than do something stimulating, like watching television.
Ensure that your child gets enough quality sleep — ideal amounts range from 8 to 12 hours. Getting
enough sleep will help her get up on time, be refreshed in the morning, and feel ready for a full day
of learning ahead!
By making your child's school attendance a priority, you will be taking an important step in support-
ing your child's school success and setting a good example. Remember — every day counts!
Stark County MathCounts
The Stark County MathCounts Competition was held on Thursday, February 7th, at the
Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson. Those competing for Richardton-Taylor Public School were
Caisen Dohrmann, Bailey Elkins, Carissa Farpella, Alyssa Hoff, Ava Messer, Adreia Sanchez, and
Kora Vogle. Ava Messer was the highest scoring individual on the team. Great job to all of the par-
ticipants!

THANK YOU….. Jordyn Mason, RTPS Athletic
RTPS and I would like to thank all of you who donated or pur-chased an item during either of our basket auctions that were held in February. We had a great turn out, raising just under $1,300 to go towards RTPS athletics.
The money that was raised will help bring BSC volleyball camp, Warwick Workouts, and Darren Mattern
Basketball Camp to RTPS this summer. It will also help send the football team to the DSU team camp & go
towards acceleration in Dickinson this summer for Track & Field athletes.
None of this could be done without all of your help and support towards our student athletes. We greatly
appreciate all that you do for RTPS, and we hope to continue to give our athletes opportunities to grow &
succeed.
Thank you again for your generosity

Reading Month is scheduled for the month of March.
This year’s theme: SPACE
Week 1: Stars
Week 2: Planets & Moons
Week 3: Space Travel
Week 4: Gravity
You will be invited to join your child for a fun STEM ac-
tivity during the month. Your invitation will include the
day and time of your child’s designated activity day, so
watch for that to be coming home soon!
In Entrepreneurship, the students are studying how to think like an entrepreneur. One aspect of this is
the ability to think creatively and remove roadblocks to creativity. The entrepreneurship students took
the skills they learned and put them to the test. They were given toothpicks, marshmallows and a time
limit and had to create a structure. Their goal was to create the tallest structure that could free stand on
its own for 10 seconds. Students used their entrepreneurships skill of brainstorming, looking at ordi-
nary items in a new way and finding creative solutions. Students also practiced the skills of removing
creative roadblocks by using nonlogical thinking, believing in themselves, thinking positively, and en-
tertaining all ideas!

Mason participated. Joseph Bohn, Gracee Goetz, Macy Kennington, and Katie Van-
note, from the elementary, also participated. Bailey Elkins, Evelyn Kuntz, Hunter
Davison, and Nevaeh Tormaschy also went along as alternates. After five rounds
of ten words, finalists were determined. Andrew Mason went on to the oral round
