A Message From the wearer of the “Top Hat”……..

President Bonnie Hochberg

Page 2

Hello All,

My name is Bonnie Hochberg and I used to be a Democrat. Yes, I was a card-carrying member of the De-mocrat Party until 2008. I was raised in a stereotypical New York Jewish family (need I say more on that subject?). We didn’t talk politics at home but I knew that I had to be a Democrat, just as I knew that I had to uphold the other family traditions and beliefs, whatever they were. As a teenager, I admired and envied the Kennedys’ Camelot. It looked so glam-ourous to a high school student’s eye. When I enrolled in a local liberal arts

university in 1964, I joined the Young Democrats Club and remember standing on the quad in Brooklyn, New York for hours excitedly awaiting the arrival of then Candidate Robert F. Kennedy who was sched-uled to speak. But, I also remember being appalled by the Vietnam War Protests, outraged seeing the burnings of the U.S. flag, and hearing my classmates and acquaintances brag about their draft-dodging experiences. I didn’t quite feel that I belonged to the new hippie, free loving generation. Was something wrong with me? Why didn't I fit into this generation? When I married and was blessed with two young sons, I started to feel the pressure to choose the "right" school for my precious little ones. We were living in Los Angeles, "the land of fruits and nuts," with a school board that decided that diversity in education meant putting your little one on a bus to send him/her to a school an hour away in order to integrate. We were fortunate enough to have in our community a "magnet" school that was instituted to balance the school with faces of multiculturalism. Of course, one had to apply well in advance of enrollment and had to state the child’s ethnicity on the application and hope that one’s precious one was chosen if there weren’t too many "others" on the ap-plication list. It took two years on a waiting list to have my oldest accepted. My youngest followed be-cause he had "sibling points." Did I begin to feel that the "Democratic" process was unfair and that the liberals in education were making decisions that were not in my children’s best interest? You bet! Fur-ther down the road, my oldest son completed his college applications, listed once again as "other" under "ethnicity." Those were the days of Affirmative Action. His friend Josh Mendez timidly told Adam that he (Josh) was about to sit in Adam’s seat at the University of California Berkeley. I asked Josh why he said that and he told me, "Well, Adam had better grades than me, higher SAT scores, and more school and community service but my name is ‘Mendez’ and I got preferential acceptance because of my last name.” Equality in education? Not for my sons. Angered but still a Democrat! I kept telling myself that I wasn’t happy with those Democrats who represented us and who set forth policies that were unacceptable to me but I promised myself that I had to uphold those family tra-ditions and beliefs. Step into 2008! How could I continue? How could I betray my beliefs and values any longer? Enter Barak Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton to the Presidential race! No way could I vote for either of them in the primary. Change parties? You bettcha. Time to put on my "big girl panties" and dance. Now to explain to dear old Mom and Dad. But some secrets are better left unshared. They didn't have to know. Now that I’m happily ensconced in the Republican Party and president of our club, I can hardly keep that secret anymore. In fact, I’ve come out to the family. My parents wonder where they went wrong raising their daughter, as they complain about their cuts in medical care and their dwindling sav-ings but I can stand proudly and proclaim to them that I am a Republican, invested in smaller govern-ment, less taxation, and more personal freedom. Now to convince my kids.

Jan Buchkowski, Chairman, 623-322-1273

StandDown is a military term that refers to a brief period of time for a solider to leave an active combat area, to rest and regain strength before returning to battle. The Arizona StandDown is an annual three day event that seeks to offer a hand up to former members of the U.S. Armed Forces in the Valley who now battle with homelessness and life on the streets. The event brings together the Valley's home-less and at-risk military veterans, connecting them with services ranging from: VA HealthCare, Mental Health Services, Clothing, Meals, Emergency Shelter, Transitional and Permanent Housing, ID/ Drivers Li-cense's, Court Services and Legal Aide, Showers and Haircuts and myriad other services and re-sources. The Arizona StandDown is held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Arizona State Fair-grounds on Super Bowl weekend. The Arizona StandDown’s goal is to increase the community’s awareness of the plight of the home-less American veteran, while bringing a variety of social service providers together to meet with, inform and assist veterans in reintegrating back into our communities through housing and support services. Ulti-mately, it is our hope that such events can bring forth the awareness and political/community will neces-sary to assert the on-going resources it will take to end veteran homelessness once and for all. Our ARW will be represented at the StandDown Arizona on all three days: March 7, 8 and 9th. So far, we have seven (7) members attending. We will give a report in March about our event. A sincere "Thank You" to all the members for their generous donations of 10 boxes of supplies for our Veterans! We will personally take these down to the event, as well as the cards you signed. Know that you have helped to make someone's life a little easier. ARW women are "woman of heart!" Sincerely, For more information, please visit arizonastanddown.org.

By Lezlee Alexander - 2nd Vice-President (Membership)

Hello, friends!

It’s time! It’s time! This is IT!! Your ARW membership runs through December 31, so it’s time for EVERY-ONE to get renewals in BEFORE MARCH 15! Our March luncheon will really be your last chance to be included in the 2013 ARW Directory of members so we can bring it to you at the April meeting. We’re at a 75% renewal rate right now. State Membership Chairman Mary Preeble recognized ARW as THE biggest “Fast Start” club with the largest club increase in first quarter (Oct 15-Jan 15) memberships compared with 2012. Thanks again to ALL for your enthusiastic participation in our Renewal Round-Up!

I had the great pleasure to introduce you to Anna Morrison last month, now part of the Membership Committee. I’d also like to welcome Natalie Cummings and Sandra Lena Johnson, two of our new members jump-ing right in. Keep these ladies in mind as we begin to plot ways to draw in more members while spreading news of a conservative platform.

“Membership” is a far-reaching term in this Committee Chairman’s book. EACH of us is actively involved in “membership” when we talk to our friends, not just about the amazing resources in ARW, but politics and the state of our country right now. We are not alone in our frustration. People are LOOKING for ARW, whether they realize it or not, as a way to connect with other conservative action-oriented folks. You merely help them realize there IS a group available to promote a conservative constitutional platform – a bright spot in an otherwise bleak time. We’re the ONLY Republican Women club in the north AND west Valley as clubs have merged. We have a HUGE pool of potential members WAITING to hear from YOU! We have tools to assist you in letting friends know about ARW. Club brochures and business cards are available at the luncheon check-in table at every meeting. The business cards are designed to let YOU put YOUR contact information on the back so YOU can share your story with others. MANY thanks to President Bonnie and others for going to LD meetings to share news about ARW! It’s easy. You’re AT the LD meeting anyhow. Take those two minutes offered, tell a bit about ARW and why you’re a member, take some brochures and business cards with you, and you’ll be amazed at the new friends you’ll make.

The New Member and Prospective New Member Tea was a huge success! It was a GREAT way to chat with fellow Republican Women in a casual atmosphere. Twenty attended with five of those being “new” mem-bers (joined within the past 6 months) – one connecting with us for the first time! Thanks to returning member and Member-At-Large Arlene Goldblatt for bringing a very new friend. Thanks to all of the Officers and Commit-tee Chairmen for helping everyone feel so welcome. Special thanks to President Bonnie and her Associate mem-ber husband for hosting the event!

March luncheon prize plans - we’ll have a prize at the March luncheon for Most Guests.

We’ll see you there!

United Nations Agenda for the Twenty first Century, Shortened to AGENDA 21

Submitted by Jan Martinson, 3rd VP

The United Nations Agenda program sounds won-

derful on face value, sustainability, social justice, equity

for the masses; however the truth contained within this

U.N. program depicts something sinister and dark. The

plan calls for government to take control of all the land

use and not leave any of the decision making in the hands

of private property owners. It is assumed by the backers

of AGENDA-21 that the people are not good stewards of

their land and the government will do a better job. Indi-

vidual rights are to be given to the Global Community, as determined by a Global governing body, not by

local elected representatives like our City Councils, Boards of Supervisors, and even State Legislators. Fur-

thermore, the contents of this U.N. program reveal that people should be rounded up off their own land

and relocated to human settlements close to employment centers and transportation hubs. Your land will

now go into what they call the Wildlands Project. Your land is to be set aside for non-humans. Meaning

that you cannot even enjoy setting a foot on it, but will be left to the wilds of nature and the animals.

Also, this agenda calls for lowering the standards of living for Americans, so people in poorer coun-

tries will have more, we will have less, which will become the new norm, and the “Redistribution of

Wealth”, will be the vehicle by which equality will be achieved. Are you ready to give up your private

property? This is just a part of the plans for a “One World Government.” We have already given up the

governing of the United States waterways, This Agenda has been in the works since 1976 and hadn’t

amounted to much until, we now have a President who believes in it whole heartily and is determined to

see it thru. If I had my way, I would see that the “United Nations” no longer remained on our soil! Most

of my information has been taken from Dr. Lyle Rapacki and Senator Judy Burges, who have gone to great

length to research AGENDA 21. There is much, much more and you will be able to hear the whole story at

our May 21st, Dinner, where Dr. Rapacki is our guest speaker.

A Word From Debbie…….

I am extremely pleased that the Governor’s sales tax simplification plan, which I sponsored through legislation, passed the House Ways and Means Committee with unanimous support! The legislation is a result of six months of task force meetings attended by tax experts, Arizona’s small and large employers, the League of Cities and Towns, individual cities, and the Department of Revenue.

Arizona has the most complicated sales tax system in the entire na-tion. My legislation would put Arizona in line with what 46 other states al-ready do. Our current sales tax system burdens businesses with multiple layers of tax forms, multiple audits, multiple remittance locations, and multiple tax classifications. We know our system is messed up when businesses complain that California’s system is much better than ours.

My legislation will free up business capital so employers can hire more workers and concentrate on their business instead of filling out mountains of tax paperwork. HB-2657 will allow businesses to file their taxes in one on-line location, be subjected to only one audit, and replace the current complicated and fraud-ridden prime contracting tax system with one where contractors pay taxes on their materials where they purchase them, just like what is done in 46 other states. The legislation wills also double the amount of money the state shares with the cities on construction sales.

Large and small businesses alike support this legislation because they know the burden our current system places on them. In fact, I have never seen such a large coalition of support from business and em-ployer groups from across the entire state.

The Governor’s office and I are continuing to talk with the cities about their concerns. Most of the bigger cities collect their own taxes and many of the cities audit businesses themselves. They don’t want to give up control even though they know it is needed to simplify the process.

The League of Cities and Towns was a member of the six month long task force meetings. They have known for months what recommendations would be made. It is disappointing to me that instead of coming up with solutions to their concerns, some cities are now throwing around unrealistic fiscal impact numbers in an attempt to kill the legislation.

Arizona is constantly working to bring high-wage employers into our state. In fact, it is common for cities to support legislation that will help lure businesses into their cities, but may lower revenues to the state. Let’s not lose these employers by maintaining the status quo.

I look forward to continued work with the Governor, the business community, and the cities to get this done. It is the right thing to do.
