Well, aren’t we lucky!! All winter without an ice storm, and only a briefly lingering snowfall!! In any case, things are well in Lake Woebegone, and at the Blackbeard Sailing Club. The fence and gate are repaired thanks to the ef-forts of our Grounds Chairman, Richard Schott. Thanks, Richard. I believe this is the last of the Hurricane Flo damage. There is a project afoot to build a platform in the woods between the Clubhouse and C Dock, to take advantage of the sublime view of our Marina. Look for this to happen on Workday. Workday is March 21st. Please contact Ed Doughty for more information. The Race Management Seminar is scheduled for March 14, and there are still openings available. Please contact Bill Jarvis if you would like to partic-ipate and improve your race management skills.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPHETYSA News by Clifton Game
Dear 2020 Sailors: ETYSA is happy once more to offer another season of youth sailing instruction programs. Year 2020 marks our tenth corporate year on the water and this one promises to be as good as ever. Coach Will Glenn is returning and we are filling our assistant coach roster and recruiting volunteers. Our volunteer staff is instrumental to say the least. ETYSA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which strives to maintain an affordable and high quality youth sailing and water safety sport program serving Craven, Jones and Pamlico areas. Comparable programs along the US eastern coast with similar atten-dance are twice the cost of ours or more. Please contact us if you wish to help. This year we boast of two new board members, Ms. Sara Foster and Erin Moody. Arch Altman left the board to serve as Commodore for Blackbeard Sailing Club, but will continue to help ETYSA with fleet maintenance and as a cherished adviser and supporter. I was nominated to replace Arch as ETYSA Presi-dent. Jeremy LeRay, a charter member, returns as Vice President. Mike Foster, former Blackbeard Commodore, will be our Secretary. Clare Brock, also a charter member, remains Treasurer, and Doug Longhini returns, helping with program management, advertising, and other support. With this team in place, our officer ranks are fully staffed with a nice mix of deeply experienced old hands and new re-cruits with fresh minds. A summary of last year is also in order, especially due to noteworthy events. We restricted camp en-rollment last year due to waterfront reconstruction following damage from hurricane Florence. Even so, we held four camp weeks, and for safety reasons, focused on experienced sailors. At summer’s end we carried a team to Manteo, NC for their annual regatta at the Maritime Museum. There our students won first place in both the 420 and Topaz classes! We also held the ETYSA regatta on our home turf, Upper Broad Creek. Guests attended from Carolina Yacht Club, Wrightsville Beach, and a group of Sea Scouts from Raleigh-Durham helped fill the river’s course. We closed our year with a Sunday Fun Sail and Pizza Party. Last year will no doubt be hard to beat. Now, with facility repairs completed, we expect to have six weeks through June and July brimming with students from beginner to advanced sailors. Registration links are activated and we have students al-ready enrolled. Don’t delay! Once you have your summer calendar planned, please enroll so we can plan for you. For more information send us a message using our contact form, which is online at etysa.org. The form is located under the link titled Contact Us. Looking forward to great sailing this summer! Warm Regards,
Clifton Game ETYSA, President

Please welcome your new neighbors in wet slips! C32 – Richard & Nancy Houyoux A37 – Al & Mary Lang B24 – John & Holly Ziegler A51 – Paul & Debbie Mills Work Barge Catwalk – a scaffolding catwalk connecting the end of B Dock to the large barge is under construction and will be installed on Workday. Once complete, feel free to tie-up, wax your topsides, or otherwise work on your boat at waterline level! (Please keep your dock carts on the main dock.) Dock Lines - please check your dock lines, replace as necessary! Here’s some of what we are seeing:
· Lines too small for boat size · Double lines all 4 corners lacking · Missing springlines · Chafed, rotted lines · Lines overlapping a neighbor’s lines on a piling
Note: The load should be on your piling, not on the cleat….give ‘em two+ wraps on the piling, then cleat off (if you have cleats). If you share a piling, wrap one boat ’s line above the cleat, the other below. If you have tide slides, don’t share rings. Party lines should be tied off to the pil-ing, not to a cleat or ring. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!!!

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH
Nancy and Richard Houyoux, having escaped the snow and ice of the Philadelphia suburbs three and a half years ago, enjoy our home on Island Lake in River Bend. We are both semi-retired with some business activity – Richard supports his Warehouse Management application and Nancy pro-vides consulting for a growing health-care facility in Pennsylva-nia. Richard served in the U. S. Navy aboard a destroyer during the Viet Nam conflict, then sailed a Dinghy in Antigua, W.I., and fi-nally served as commodore for a small sailing club with twin Co-lumbia 22s in Argentia, Newfoundland. Later he made a small sailboat and later still bought a Newport Surprise, all of 14.5’ to sail at Lack Wallenpaupack, in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Our friends Mike and Diane Foster introduced us to Blackbeard Sailing Club, and we caught the bug to try our luck with a big boat. On Christmas day, 2019, we began our journey from Jack-
sonville, Florida, up the Intracoastal Waterway to Swansboro, where our newly purchased O’Day 34 (1983) is getting a new motor. We hope to finish our journey by the middle of February, and we’re look-ing forward to seeing the boat in a slip at Blackbeard. We certainly enjoyed meeting many of you at the social gathering in December, as guests of Mike and Diane, and we’re looking forward to participating in many Blackbeard events in 2020 and be

We moved from PA to New Bern 5 years ago. New Bern is the perfect place for us. We wanted to be near the water and our dream was to get a boat. Sailing was what we wanted to do! We have a McGregor 26 and enjoy it because we have the op-portunity to sail or to just take a leisurely cruise on the Neuse. Mostly we do day trips and find it a wonderful way to relax. It would be fun to meet people who have the same in-terest. The BSC rules and regulations were explained to us during our interview. It is all agreeable, and yes, we would look forward to serving at the Workday lunch as new members!

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH
The Neuse Yacht Racing Association hosted its annual Commodore’s “Ball” and Awards Ceremony Sat-urday, February 22, 2020, at the New Bern Golf and Country Club, overlooking the Trent River. Approx-imately 50 guests enjoyed a buffet meal featuring a Prime Rib Carving Station, Grilled Salmon, and Baked Chicken with Merlot Sauce. After dinner, awards for the 2019-20 Winter Series, as well as 2019 Boats of the Year (Spinnaker and Non Spinnaker), Sportsman of the Year, and Crew of the Year were pre-sented. NYRA’s Boat of the Year is awarded to the Captain of the boat that sails the best over 8 races hosted by area sailing clubs on the Neuse: (1) The NYRA Invitational (host club – NYRA) (2) The ETYSA Soundbank Regatta (host club – Blackbeard Sailing Club) (3) The Oar Race Regatta (host club – Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club) (4) The Hancock Regatta (host club – Hancock Yacht Club) (5) The Dragon’s Breath Regatta (host club – Oriental Dinghy Club) (6) The Beer Stein Regatta (host club – NYRA) (7) The Winter Series Regatta (host club – NYRA) (8) The Commodore’s Regatta (host club – NYRA) 2019 awards were presented by NYRA board and BSC members Tinka Talbert and Clare Lynn Brock to the following: 2019-20 Winter Series: Spinnaker A – After 15 total races over the winter, Tom McKnight on his Chance 24, Trailer Trash won in a tiebreaker over Ed Doughty’s J29 Bad Fish. It was the 2nd year in a row that the two skippers end-ed the Winter in a tie for first. In 2018-19, Ed on his Santa Cruz Super Bueno won the tiebreaker. Spinnaker B – Mark Hittner and crew on Blue Note ran away from 2nd place David Gillespie on his San-tana 20, Zen Tuna. Blue Note finished in first in 13 of the 15 races sailed, dominating the fleet. Non Spinnaker - Steve Sherwood, on his oft mispronounced C&C Ullr, finished in first ahead of Dave Whitney on Silent Pursuit (who just might have won had he registered for the entire series, rather than paying individually for each race, which made him ineligible for the overall series). Ullr definitely won the most committed sailor award, racing on every race day of the Series, even the cancelled-by-con-sensus rainy cold day in December. 2019 Annual Awards: Spinnaker Boat of the Year - Trailer Trash (Tom McKnight) Non Spinnaker Boat of the Year - Ullr (Steve Sherwood) Sportsman of the Year – Bill Green Crew of the Year – Jan Green Awards were also presented to Race Committee Volunteers Bill Jarvis, Stephanie Davies, Jackie Moniak, Jenny McDiarmid, Kathy Petritsch, Neil Ober and Skip Byrum. Next up on the river, the first race of the 2020 Boat of the Year Series – the NYRA Invitational on March 28-29! NYRA needs you! Consider volunteering in 2020, and help promote quality sailboat racing on the Neuse – contact the NYRA board at: [email protected], or Clare Lynn Brock at (252)671-7462.

Blast from the Past! by Bill Green
Mark Your Calendars
On pages 10 through 13, you’ll find a reprint of the Epitaph from March, 1976. If you’ve been following this series, you’ll know that the hot topics back then were the acquisition of additional land and build-ing a clubhouse of our very own. Had we made progress toward those goals? To find out, you’ll need to read that old Epitaph.
It’s always fun for me to go back and brush up on Club history. Check out what was happening at BSC 44 years ago this month. I hope it will be fun for you, too.
It’s Wilkerson Race Time Again!
This year the Bill Wilkerson Memorial Cup Regatta will be held on April 25th with a pursuit start. We’re planning on a 2 – 3-hour race on the Neuse River starting near Northwest Creek marker 1N. The race is open to anyone who keeps a sailboat in Fairfield Harbour at a private dock or one of the marinas includ-ing NW Creek, Birdland, Shoreline, and Blackbeard Sailing Club and/or owns property in Fairfield Har-bour.
The Wilkerson Cup is named for Bill Wilkerson, an avid FHYC sailor, and this year we’ve invited Wilkerson “kids”, Chuck and Martha, to come for the event. The awards and a scrumptious potluck will be held afterwards at the Wilkerson House on Spar Ct. What could be more appropriate! A great big thanks to Mike and Vicki Shetter for volunteering their home.
The Deadline to register is April 23. Get your NOR from our FHYC website and email the form back to Mark Hit-tner. Cost is $25, payable at the Skipper’s Meeting in Red Sail Park.
Remember and tell your friends and neighbors--the more, the merrier!
