Tennis Tips From the ProfessionalsHow To Direct The Ball

Try this: If you are trying to hit a forehand groundstroke crosscourt, just line your feet up a little closer to the ball. This alone will help the ball go crosscourt. If you are trying to hit a forehand groundstroke up the line, just line up your feet a little farther away from the ball. This sounds so simple, but it works. One of the problems you might face is this: Suppose you are running to the forehand with the intention of hitting the ball crosscourt. However, you are late with your footwork, forcing you to reach farther to hit the ball. This mistake is a huge reason why so many errors are made in a match. Instead of choosing the direction of your shots by hop-ing, choose the direction of the ball by your position to the ball. So in this scenario, quit trying to hit the ball where you “wish.” Instead, go with the higher percentage shot chosen by your position to the ball. Thus, in this scenario, go with the higher percentage shot down the line, not cross-court. On the other hand, if you want to know where your opponents’ groundstrokes are going, notice how their groundstrokes tend to go up the line when they stay away from the ball and cross-court when they line up nearer the ball. Try mastering your choices by your footwork. (Near-er vs. farther from the ball) As your game matures, start paying attention to how your opponents line up to the ball. Have you ever wondered how the pros are able to anticipate correctly most of the time in returning passing shots? They are paying attention to their opponent’s position to the ball.

Good luck on the courts!Kelly Marshall, Head Tennis Professional

From the Cimarron Hills Handicap CommitteeCommittee Members: Tony Jilka-Chairman, Chris Chapman, Kathy Gower, Ralph Freitag and Steve Talentino

The Golf Handicap Computer is now up and running in the golf shop. Many members are appreciating the opportunity to look up scoring history, post scores and print personal handicap labels. We commend those of you who always post your scores in a timely manner.

If you would like to have your USGA updated handicap index e-mailed to you by the USGA, please let us know and we can make sure your email address is included in your GHIN file on the computer.

Please remember you can post your score by returning your scorecard to the golf staff, posting online at GHIN.com or using the handicap com¬puter in the golf shop. You may contact any member of this committee or the golf shop staff for clarification on how to post or to find out which scores are eligible.

The new year is in full swing and spring is upon us. As I mentioned in the 2012 club operations letter, all of our department managers have been diligently working over the course of the past two months preparing activities for the upcoming year. Steve Talentino has also finalized a new 2012 Golf Activities booklet that has been mailed to each member. You can pick one up in the golf shop or download it on our website. I encourage everyone to take a look at the booklet and highlight the events you may want to participate in (Club Championships, Member-Guest Invitationals, Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Car Show and BBQ etc...). A big THANK YOU goes out to all the staff who worked together to coordinate these calendars. Though the calendars have been completed, I'm still hopeful to get some member participation on the Social Activity Com-mittee to get input and finalize specific event detail for making all of our events as successful as we can. If you are interested in being on the Social Activity Committee, please contact me directly, [email protected].

I've mentioned that I will utilize the monthly newsletter as an opportunity to review various rules, regulations and policies that seem to have been "forgotten" or even amended over the years for one reason or another. These policies and procedures have been developed to enhance the enjoyment of your Club for all members and guests. I urge everyone to become familiar with the Club's Rules and Regulations (they may be viewed on the Club website). Preventing uncomfortable situations for you, your guests and the staff is desirable. If there are any Rules and Regulations you would like to be taken under consider-ation for edit, your input is welcome, as is your participation on the House Committee which will be responsible for review of these policies. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact me directly.

For Review:*Tee shirts are not allowed in the dining areas in the Clubhouse by any person over twelve (12) years of age after 5:00 pm.*Gentlemen- hats are not allowed in the dining rooms of the Clubhouse at any time (except in the men's lounge).*Your help in making advance reservations for all dining and special events is highly encouraged- it truly helps our staff in planning, setting-up, and staffing events properly for desired service expectations.*Proper golf attire is extended to the practice facilities (no denim, tee shirts or athletic shorts).

I've made a slight adjustment to our management structure for the 2012 season. Eloy Fernandez, Food and Beverage Man-ager will continue in that role with a few additional responsibilities. He will be in charge of all "front of house" day to day operations in the F&B department. Lily Jones has been re-classified as our Special Events and Activities Director. Please contact Lily for any of your personal, business, or club special activity questions or needs. Chef Brian, Eloy, Lily and all their culinary and service staff are truly looking forward in providing you, your family and guests with a spectacular season.

We hope you all enjoy and are able to participate in many of our scheduled events or daily offerings. If there is anything we can do to make your visits to the club more enjoyable, please ask.

See you at the Club! Rick Schaefer, CCM
