Dear Sisters and Brothers;First I would like to take

this opportunity to thank all out going lodge offi cers, for a job well done. It is because of members like you that the Sons of Italy is such a great organi-zation. To all the new offi cers, please learn our bylaws, have respect for others and most of all don’t forget our motto Lib-erty, Equality, and Fraternity.

Any member who missed the Carnevale Veneziano, put on by Brother Pat Marino and his committee, missed a great night of wonderful food, music, and camaraderie, Many Sisters and Brothers have told me they can’t wait for next year’s Carnevale Veneziano.

Brother Steve Cozzaglio and his committee has put on two of the four O & E workshops, the latest one in the Pittsfi eld lodge held on March 13th, was another great success, there were 31 people in attendance, a great meal was has by all thanks to brother Mario DeMartino and his kitchen crew. The next workshop will be held on May 8, at the Braintree Lodge, and the fourth workshop will be held at the Haverhill Lodge on June 5th, I encourage all offi cers to attend these fantastic Workshops.

A dart tournament was held at the Quincy Sons of Italy Hall where 32 members and guests had a fun time and a great meal thanks to the Quincy Ladies Lodge President Michelle Bertoldi and Past President Donna Baker. Thanks to Steve DeAngelis and his commission-ers for a great job.

For all our bowlers or those who call themselves bowlers, like me, Sports Commission-er Steve DeAnglis is holding a bowling tournament on April 18th, 2010 at the Woburn

Bowladrome, Woburn, MA. Please come join us and have a few laughs, there will be a light collation put on by the Woburn Men’s Lodge after the tournament.

It is my honor to announce this year’s recipients of the Law and Justice Awards, to be held on May 2nd, 2010 at Lombardo, Randolph, MA.

Justice Award, Honorable Vito A. Virzi, Justice of the Westborough District Court, the Law Enforcement Award to Alan R. DeNaro, Chief of Police Haverhill, MA. And the Public Service Award to Michael A., Sullivan, Clerk of Courts Middle-sex Superior Court. My thanks to Commissioner for Social Justice Brother Al DeNapoli and his fi ne Committee. This is one of our signature events; it would be great if we could fi ll Lombardo’s, so please call the Grand Lodge for tickets.

On June 12th 2010, we will hold our 2010 Convention at the Holiday Inn, Mansfield MA.

Convention Chairman State 1st Vice President Carmelita Bello, will be putting together a number of interesting pro-grams. Please utilize the special room rates that the Holiday Inn has provided, and make it a great getaway weekend.

Once again I would like to thank all the lodges that have in-vited Kathy and I to their Instal-lations, the Unione e Progresso Lodge of Boston, Woburn La-dies Lodge, Regina Margherita Waltham Ladies Lodge, Quat-tro Eroi Franklin Lodge, ITAM Pittsfi eld Lodge, the G. Marconi Lodge in Lee, Gorizia Lodge in Rumford Maine, Braintree Men’s Lodge, Braintree Ladies Lodge, Vittorio Veneto Lodge in Fall River, Norwood Lodge,

Worcester Lodge, Greater Bos-ton Renaissance Lodge, Giulio Cesare Lodge New Bedford, Ambrose D. Cedrone Lodge Newton, and Piave Fiume Lodge Watertown.

I ask all lodge presidents to appoint a membership chair-man for your lodge, and get together with our State Mem-bership Chairman, State 2nd Vice President, Tony Sestito, your lodge has the opportunity to get anywhere from $200 to $800 credit on you per capita if you have the largest net in-crease in your membership, a great incentive program.

Quoting Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro, the founder of the Order Sons of Italy, in his inaugural address, he said, “no matter what part of Italy we come from, we are fi rst and foremost Italians. We cannot continue to treat each other as sub-nationalities of the Italian peninsula. If we do, we will not only remain weak as a nationality in the larger American society, but we will also fi nd it diffi cult to achieve our rightful place of infl uence and respect as we help make this country greater than ever before. This wonderful country can only become the richer and more cultured as a result of our efforts.”

I would like to encourage all to participate in our fund rais-ing programs, chaired by sister Florence Ferullo Kane and brother Walter “Sonny” Robak, all monies raise will go toward the future per capita increase by the National offi ce.

Kathy and I would like to wish all members a great spring season, and look forward to seeing you at convention of June 12th, 2010.

God bless you all and God bless the Order Sons of Italy.

Cari Fretelli e Sorelle,Colgo anzitutto l’opportunita’

Meet FLORENCE FERULLO KANE,Immediate Past State President

Hometown: Winthrop, Massachusetts

Italian Roots: Calabria, Italy

Occupation: Offi ce Manager, Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Retired)

Joined OSIA: June, 1962

Current Lodge: Belmont Mixed Lodge #1094, Belmont, MA

Current Position and Main Responsibilities in OSIA: Immediate Past State President, Co-Chair of Fund Raising. Responsibilities: As Immediate Past President I assume the offi ce of President whenever the President or Vice Presidents are unable to act or are absent. To be supportive of State President and Council and to make the Fund Raising Program successful.

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: My initiatives as the Immediate Past President are to work with the State President and the Council to promote and encourage those who are not members to join our organization and to let them know what we as Italians have accomplished throughout our 105 years of existence. Also, to assist the Chairmen of Permanent Commissions in any manner possible. As Fundraising Co-Chair, to raise suffi cient funds to assist our Filial Lodges in future per capita increases.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: I think that OSIA’s greatest strength is perseverance – to continue the good works of our forefathers.

OSIA Could Improve: MEMBERSHIP – we need to increase our membership and involve more people. Membership is the vital key to any organization.

How Can Th is Be Done: By having better contact with our Deputies who attend the Filial Lodge meetings. Also, by using innovative ideas, having a Meet and Greet evening asking members to bring in a new friend, have guest speakers, someone from the Grand Lodge, the Benefi t Insurance Commission or Chairmen of Permanent Commissions to enlighten them what we as Italian Americans do in our Italian organization.

Advice for Lodge Presidents: Participation is what you need to make your lodge stronger. Brothers and Sisters working together for the same purpose and goals of the Order is what should be important. Each President should appoint Chairmen in their lodges for Membership, Italian Culture, Public Relations and Charity Commissions.

Meet RONALD J. HILL, State Recording Secretary

Hometown: Watertown, Massachusetts

Current Lodge: Lodge Piave Fiume #1036, Watertown, Massachusetts

Chief Duties State: Grand Lodge State Recording Secretary, Public Relations Chairman (Lodge Piave Fiume #1036, Watertown, MA.

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: My goals are to continue my dedication to the Order Sons of Italy in America at the Filial Lodge level, as well as the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. Also, to continue to promote our Organization to others, and support the goals and projects of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: Th e principles of our Order, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. As we strive to live up to each principle we must share our beliefs and ideals with others so the Order will continue to be a viable organization in the United States and Canada.

OSIA Could Improve: Membership. We must put in place a membership incentive program. We need to promote our organization to others.

How Can Th is Be Done: Each one of us owe it to our children and grandchildren the wonderful gift of our heritage? We all have unique stories to tell about our ancestors. Our Heritage is OUR responsibility, not the responsibility of the Filial Lodges or the Grand Lodge.

Advice for Lodge Presidents: Each President needs to recognize that each and every offi cer they serve are volunteers. Appreciation for their eff orts is paramount in leading any group.

Know yourOSIA COUNCIL

Meet ROBERT A. BONCORE, Esq., State Orator

Hometown: Winthrop, Massachusetts

Italian Roots: Great-grandparents from Sicily

Occupation: Attorney

Joined OSIA: 1996

Current Lodge: Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057

Current Position and Main Responsibility: To interpret By-Laws and render decisions regarding confl icts of both the Filial and Grand Lodge levels.

Plans, Initiatives, Goals: As Orator, I am working hard to ensure that the By-Laws of this great Order are adhered to by questions and or disputes in an effi cient and prudent manner. I would also like to initiate a program which would ensure newly elected Orators of the Filial Lodge level know the By-Laws, and proper procedures.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: In my opinion the greatest strength of the Order Sons of Italy is its ability to bring and keep Italian Culture and traditions to its members and surrounding communities.

OSIA Could Improve: As a young and active member, I would like to see new initiatives put in place to attract new and younger membership. Also, and more importantly, we need to help and urge these new members to be active and move up in their lodges.

How Can Th is Be Done: OSIA has been actively pursuing membership through various avenues. To further this goal, fi lial lodges should work with the local school systems, PTO’s, and offi ce to host an activity for students and their parents. In doing so, the local lodges will hopefully be able to attract new members. As for urging them to be active, fi lial lodge presidents should be appointing them to Committees and the like.

Advice for Lodge Presidents: I would advise Lodge Presidents to make sure their offi cers are doing their jobs, staying on top of them, and keeping order during meetings. I would advise them to urge new members to be active, and to not always rely on the same person or people but to look to others to take on leadership roles.

such as Mickey Rooney, Donald O’Connor, Tony Sandler, Kay Starr and Raina English. He teaches at Salem State College and is the recipient of untold credits.

Steve Langone, is an ac-complished drummer and a native of Boston who won mul-tiple high school musicianship awards, he has played many professional jazz gigs before graduating. Steve completed his studies at Berklee School with a scholarship. He has played at a Brazilian club for seven years and worked with many top local musicians.

These are three wonderful young Italian-American musi-cians who played for us and

entertained us at our 2009 Carnevale Veneziano.

Dinner was truly a delight, from Antipasti to Desserts! Like everything Italian, there was an abundance of food in all the various “Piatti” served. I believe there wasn’t anyone who left this dinner hungry.

And, as for costumes, al-though not many participants took advantage of this part of the Carnevale, those that did the costumes were magnifi cent. There were prizes held for the best costumes, although all were remarkable.

The raffl e table for this event was very impressive, and many guests went home with happy faces because of their win-

nings. We must thank all the individuals and officers who aided with the raffl es, tickets, door prizes and the like. This truly was a team effort and we do hope that next year we can double the amount of members who attend this truly excellent Carnevale.

Culture Chairman Patrick Moreno is available to all lodges as a speaker. You will fi nd him very informative and learn quite a bit about Italian Culture. He can be reached at [email protected] where you can set up an appointment to have him speak at your lodge.

Again, “Thank You” Patrick Moreno for an excellent contri-bution to our 2009 Carnevale.

In the 1920’s there was no Order Sons of Italy in America in Lee. For Lee men to become members of the Order, they had to travel to Pittsfi eld and join the Lodgia Benefi cenza #564. By the late 1920’s fifty-five men from Lee were members of Beneficenza. In 1931, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts informed the men from Lee that they qualifi ed to have their own filial lodge. With excite-ment and enthusiasm, Louis DiGrigoli, Giacomo Viana and Pietro Scolforo founded the Gug-lielmo Marconi Lodge #1620. The Supreme Lodge issued the G. Marconi Lodge its charter December 29, 1931. The Lodge was instituted in January 1932. The installing offi cer was Luigi Gazzaniga of North Adams.

Up until 1940, the minutes of the meetings were written in Italian. During these early meetings, much time was spent discussing sick benefi ts. In Sep-tember 1939, the men accepted women into the Lodge. When a person passed away, a funeral parade was held, led by offi cers of the Lodge, who carried the Italian and American Flags, fol-lowed by the members. When the course of the procession was shortened, a very lively discus-sion ensued causing a good deal of hot Italian blood to boil.

The Lee Junior Lodge was organized in the year 1945 un-der Chairman Mary Consolati’s leadership. The initiation and installation was held on Sunday, February 17, 1946 at the Sons of Italy Hall in Pittsfi eld, which at that time was located on upper North Street. Lucy Santolin, now Lucy Boldyga, was installed as Venerable of the Junior Lodge and twenty Lee girls were initi-ated as members. The event was chaired by Mary Consolati. Sponsors for the Junior Lodge were Mrs. Santa Sorrentino, Mrs. Joseph Privitira, Mrs. Ens-er and Mary Guaristante. After a few years, due to lack of interest, the Lodge was disbanded.

In 1945, the members voted to purchase the former Boyd estate on Main Street (located where the Lee Hardware was built in 2005) as a Lodge home. Direct Quote from April 11, 1945 Spe-cial Meeting Minutes, ... “Our Venerable Frank P. Consolati bought the property in his name for $5,000 — put a $300 deposit on it; if lodge decided to buy he will sell for same price, if not will keep it or resell. (A motion made and seconded by August Barbini whether to buy it for Sons of Italy home.) Members voted by ballot, 25 to 3 in favor to purchase.” In order for the lodge to buy the property, some members bought shares to pay for the home. For the next several years, the G. Marconi Lodge either sponsored and/or organized all sports in the Town of Lee. The First State Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament was held in Lee and was spon-sored by our lodge.

Always looking for ways to im-prove the lot of its members and children, the G. Marconi Schol-arship Fund was established in 1966 and the fi rst recipient was Richard Barbini in 1967. The cash award was $200. In 1972, the password was eliminated

from the lodge meetings by the Grand Council.

In 1977 we participated in the Bicentennial Parade by entering a beautiful fl oat featuring live music, young Italian dancers and the “Little Ole Wine Maker.” Because of the many diffi culties of operating a lodge home, the membership voted to sell the home in 1981. Since then, we have met at the Laurel Lounge in Lee and St. Mary’s School on Orchard Street.

The year 1983 was remem-bered because the National Order Sons of Italy in its wisdom changed the title of Venerable to President. As a lodge, we continued to show our love and respect for our members by establishing an Annual Com-munion Breakfast to honor our deceased members in 1984.

1987 was a good year. With the help of Brothers Alex Nar-dacci and Stephen Cozzaglio, our lodge sponsored Italian lessons for 16 children and 40 adults. The fi rst Valentine/Membership Drive Covered Dish Dinner was held with seven new members joining our lodge. Sick and death benefi ts were no longer needed so they were discontinued. The First Annual Family Picnic was held under the direction of the Past Presi-dents in 1988.

In 1990, our Lodge and ITAM Lodge held a joint Las Vegas Night and raised $2,400 for Cooley ’s Anemia. The Scholarships were also increased to $750 from $500. At the April 1, 1993 meeting the dues were raised from $1.50 per month to $2.00 after much discussion and a secret vote.

On September 5, 1996 a let-ter was received from the Grand Council stating that the month of April would be dedicated to the local lodges for the purpose of installations. (This is no longer honored.) At the Octo-ber 5, 1997 meeting, we voted that any member 80 years or older with twenty-fi ve years of continuous service would no longer have to pay dues. At the November, 1997 meeting, the Lodge pledged $50,000 for St. Mary’s new addition at the school. It would be paid in installments of $10,000 over 5 years.

In February 1999, the Lodge agreed to participate at the Loaves and Fishes at the Congregational Church. On March 9, 1999 Tom Cinella received the State Coach of the Year Award from the Grand Lodge. Our annual trips started

with our trip to the Mohegan Sun under the direction of Tim Cinella on March 21, 1999.

On October 24, 1999, the street known as Eaton Street (the place where the Post Of-fi ce is) was renamed the Frank P. Consolati Way. Frank was a long and active member of G. Marconi Lodge as well as a respected and generous business man in the Lee Community.

The Lodge decided that we should become more involved in the Community and in Septem-ber 2000 decided to enter a fl oat in the Lee Hometown Parade.

2000 – 2007 More members became involved at the State and National Levels: Stephen Cozzaglio was elected to two terms as National Arbitrator 2002–2005; Alex Nardacci was again appointed to the Cultural Commission 2003–2007; San-dra Cozzaglio was appointed to the State Charity Board 2003–2007; Stephen Cozzaglio was appointed to three terms as chairman of State Organiza-tion and Education Commission 2003–2009 and elected National Trustee from 2005–2009; and Lisa Bowers was appointed as President of the State Jr. Lodge Division in May, 2006–2007.

2002 In January we had 126 members in our lodge. In February we took a tour of our New Lee Elementary School. With the death of long-time member Brother Joseph Val-enti, donations were made to a scholarship fund in his name. A total of $2,800 was placed in the fund. At the October 3rd meeting dues were raised from $24.00 to $36.00 per year. This was needed because of the raise in per capita for National. Also at this meeting Lisa Bowers and Linda Winters were appointed photographers for our Lodge. On October 22, the 70th An-niversary Party for our Lodge was held at the Country Club in Pittsfi eld. The cost for the event was $27.00 per person. Past State President Henry Fris-sora, a good friend of our lodge was our guest speaker.

2003 In March, Arlette Web-ster was again elected as our Lodge President. In October, under the leadership of Ann Lostrangio the Lodge took a trip to “Little Italy in the Bronx.” In November, we held a bake sale at the St. Mary’s Bazaar and made a profi t of $425.

2004 In March, Arlette Web-ster was again elected as our Lodge President.

The second workshop of the Organization and Education Commission was held Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the ITAM Lodge #564 in Pittsfi eld, MA. At this seminar we were also joined by the Membership Com-mission, as we all try to reach our membership and work together. The morning started off with coffee, doughnuts, and friendly conversations. Everyone was in good spirits.

O&E Chairman Stephen Cozzaglio passed out the book-lets which contained the agenda for this seminar. Steve just likes to have everyone on the same page so that there is no doubt in anyone’s mind as to what is happening.

First on the program was State President James DiStefano, 1st Vice President Carmelita Bello and 2nd Vice President Antonio Sestito. They addressed the group, explaining the Grand Lodge initiatives to help defray the cost of the per-capita cost to the filial lodges. Sis-ter Carmelita Bello asked the group for suggestions as to how the Grand Lodge can help the Filial Lodges. There were many questions and suggestions which the three offi cers handled professionally.

Membership Chairman and 2nd State Vice President Antonio Sestito presented the member-ship initiatives being used to help attract new members. Again we must all ask ourselves what we can do about bringing in a new member.

A very important part of these seminars is the duties of each offi cer in the fi lial lodges. And, at this time O&E Chairman Stephen Cozzaglio and Public Relations Chairman Dorothy Berlandi went through the entire list of ALL offi cers and what their duties require.

After a wonderful luncheon presented by the Pittsfi eld Lodge, Brother Cozzaglio called upon State 2nd Vice President and Membership Chairman Brother Antonio Sestito to explain Par-liamentary Procedures and proper ways of running meet-ings. It was suggested that the officers of each lodge hold a

short meeting prior to the regu-lar lodge meeting to prepare properly, so that these meetings are professional and organized.

Public Relations Chairman Dorothy Berlandi gave an inter-esting account of many Italian Americans within the United States that have contributed to the successes of our country.

Brother Charles DeStefano, Junior Lodge Chairman praised the Pittsfi eld Junior Lodge and asked that we continue to sup-port our Junior Lodges, as they are the future of the Order Sons of Italy in America. Additional information is available on the Grand Lodge web-site www.osiama.org.

State Scholarship Chairman Donna Giuliani addressed the group and explained that the applications for a Grand Lodge Scholarship are on the Grand Lodge website. The scholar-ship Luncheon will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Braintree Sons of Italy Hall, Braintree, MA commencing at 11:30 a.m.

State Trustee from District 1, Louis Floriani Jr. spoke on the subject of Commissions. Brother Floriani explained each Com-mission and their purpose.

State Chairman of the Chari-table and Educational Trust Angelo Rossi explained the role of the Charitable & Educational Trust, its investments and its responsibilities.

Chairman of the Organization and Education Commission Stephen Cozzaglio explained the role of the State Deputies. Steve went on to explain the role of the National OSIA Lodge, and their efforts to fi ght discrimina-tion of Italian-Americans, and the lobbying of the Congress of the U.S. on behalf of all Italian-Americans.

As the Seminar drew to a close O&E Chairman Stephen Cozzaglio thanked all who at-tended and explained as to how and why the Order Sons of Italy in America was founded.

A special thank you to State Recording Secretary Ron Hill for the excellent report pre-sented and for the photographs included in this issue.

1 pound veal meat1/2 cup chopped celery2 cloves garlic (optional)1 medium onion chopped2 large carrots2 large potatoes1 sprig of bay leaf (optional)1 chicken bouillon cube1 cup water1 full tablespoon capers (in vinegar and water)1/4 cup canola or vegetable oil3 medium-size ripened tomatoes chopped1/2 pound fresh string beans, or 8 oz. can of cut beans, or frozen cut beans

Line a twelve-inch skillet with canola oil and heat over medium fl ame. Leave bone in if using shoulder chop but remove extra fat from veal shoulder chop. Place veal in heated skillet to sear and brown. Remove meat from skillet and set aside. Add celery, onions and capers to the skillet. Stir until onion is opaque. Do not brown onion. Add a little of the vinegar and water from the capers’ bottle. Add bay leaf (optional) and simmer about two or three minutes before adding chopped tomato pieces. Stir occasionally and cover. Simmer slowly for about three minutes. Meanwhile, dissolve bouillon cube in warm water. Slowly stir in bouillon mixture into skillet. Add garlic and veal into skillet. Cover and cook about ten minutes over medium heat.

Peel and slice carrots into wedge about two inches long. Cut tips of string beans if using fresh beans and wash thoroughly. Peel potatoes and cut into two-inch wedges. Add carrots fi rst to skil-let. Cover and cook them about fi ve minutes before adding string beans and potato pieces.

Add additional water if needed. Cook until potatoes and veg-etables are tender. Season to taste. If bay leaf is used, remove before serving meal.

NOTE: I learned from my mother to vary the recipe by occasion-ally adding a can of mushrooms to the skillet. Another option is to add sliced green peppers or some green peas. In place of potatoes, I sometimes prepare some of my favorite rice and serve it plain or topped with a few tablespoons of sauce from the skillet.

On the evening of Monday, February 22, 2010, approximately 50 people attended the lecture at New Horizons at Choate for a very informative lecture by Alex R. Goldfeld, about Boston’s North End between 1630 and the present day. Mr. Goldfeld has been creating and leading tours of Boston’s historic neighborhoods since 2000, and he serves as President and Historian of the North End Historical Society.

Some of the topics that Mr. Goldfeld discussed are the North End as the center of early Boston; the expansion of the land area in Boston by fi lling bodies of water, such as the Mill Pond; religious strife amongst the earlier inhabitants of the North End; and the changing ethnic make-up of the North End. Mr. Goldfeld noted that only about one-third of the North End’s population is Italian today, whereas it was predominantly Italian about 100 years ago. Many of the illustrations that Mr. Goldfeld used to supplement his lecture, such as portraits, photographs and maps are included in his recently released book, The North End. A Brief History of Boston’s Oldest Neighborhood.

The Sons of Italy Woburn Ladies Lodge #1584 sponsored Mr. Goldfeld’s lecture as part of its ongoing Italian Cultural Pro-grams. The programs, held in the Terrace Lounge of New Horizons at Choate (site of the former Choate Hospital), 21 Warren Avenue, Woburn, Massachusetts, are free and open to the public. For more information, please call Betty Sarcia, Lodge Cultural Chairman at 781-932-8203.

The South Shore Lodge #1851’s Christmas Party held a special meaning. This year dona-tions were made to New Baby Bundles, Inc., a non-profi t corporation which deals with homeless mothers and their newborns.

This non-profi t organization originated from a conversation of three grandmothers who were serving dinner at a local homeless shelter. They

recalled the happiness of their own baby showers and the idea came to them to help these homeless pregnant mothers.

The spirit of Christmas was with these ladies as they remembered the well known adage that “It is better to give than receive.” From the photograph you will note the items that were made available for these homeless mothers.

LODGE NEWSWorcester Lodge #168 Celebrates Carnevale 2010!

by Maria (Gina) Sciannameo, EdDThere was a great showing

by members of OSIA #168 and their guests! Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Center was almost full of party-goers at Carnevale on Saturday February 6, 2010. Co-Chairs Patricia and Matteo Solitro, along with their crew of volunteers did a marvelous job in coordinating, preparing and executing a wonderfully suc-cessful evening of celebration of Carnevale with friends and family of OSIA Lodge #168, in-cluding State President & Mrs. James DiStefano, and State Deputy & Mrs. Sonny Robak.

As always, a great mix of music, from Italian to Modern to Rock & Roll, was provided by Ambrosiani, and enjoyed by all. The evening menu pre-pared and served by Michael & Maria’s Catering, was just as enjoyable! From the Italian Wedding Soup to the antipasto salad to the roast beef, and the pork with roasted potatoes

to the pound cake with ice cream — the delicious meal was enjoyed by all! The Great Ital-ian colors of green, white, and red streamers emphasized and reminded us all of our Italian heritage.

This year there was a special treat for all. Brothers Enzo An-

gilella and Kevin Mercadante arranged for a Latino Dance troupe to entertain everyone with their incredible grace, dance steps, and movements. The evening’s festivities was the breaking of the piñata. Again, the piñata had to be broken by pulling the secret string. You would be surprised how many strings were pulled to get this piñata to give up its goodies. After nearly 10 people tried their hand at pulling the right string, the piñata was fi nally broken.

The entertainment continued with the parade of costumes that enhanced the festivities with lots of fun and laughter! Costumes were as diverse as the attendees were. First place winners were Madelline Arn & her husband Ruedi–dressed in beautiful 18th century, revo-lutionary war period ball cos-tumes. Matteo Solitro dressed as an 18th century British guard won second prize, and 3rd place was taken by Linda Dattis for her beautiful and perfectly coordinated Venetian Carnevale costume and mask. In addition, bringing many, many laughs to the celebration were sisters Vittoria Mastroco-la, Maria Sciannameo, Caterina Valentine and friend Kathy Brennan who were dressed as members of the “Red Hat Soci-ety.” Mrs. Joan D’Argenis joined the Costume parade dressed as clown.

The raff le completed the evening, whose proceeds are for lodge scholarships. Lodge members worked hard with Matteo Solitro dressed as an
