Well, we did it, we collected 630 pairs of socks, 20 pairs of mitts, 10 scarves, 18 pairs of underwear and one toque. We have distributed the above as follows:

University Hospitals - 100 pairs of socks;

Royal Alexandra Hospital - 100 pairs of socks;

Covenant Health - 300 pairs of socks (they service Grey Nuns, Misericordia and General Hospitals).

When I was speaking with representatives from these Hospitals, their common response was an excited yes, how wonderful. They often get patients who were suddenly air -vacced in from other places with only the clothes on their back or patients who are homeless or low income who only have one pair of socks and those are the ones on their feet. They advised the common lament from these patients is ‘Don’t throw away my socks, I don’t have another pair.’ The Hospitals try to reassure them they will find another pair but sometimes it is very difficult. The General has a lot of low-income patients and their need is quite high. So yes, the Hospitals were absolutely delighted by our donations.

The balance of socks, mitts, scarves, underwear and the toque were delivered to Youth Empowerment and Social Services (YESS). They always have a need for these items and were ecstatic to get our donation.

So many people to thank for making this

event a success. Brenda Carlstad who was relentless with her publicity telling all of you about our drive. Without her tenacity in putting it out there, this would never have happened. And to all of you who donated socks, from one pair to many pairs, thank you. Because of you, a lot of people will have warm feet and in this cold weather what a blessing.

I have not heard how successful we were with our sock challenge with the Lodge from Missoula, Montana and will let you know. Our Lodge in Lethbridge collected 422

pairs of socks together with other items but I have not heard if any other Lodges in our Zone 4 had participated in this challenge. Nordy Riley, District President, has advised that many Lodges throughout the District have participated in this challenge and she is trying to tally numbers. We may not know until Convention time who the big winner .is

So once again, a very big thank you to all of you who have taken the time to donate to our latest challenge.

Meals on Wheels Volunteer OpportunityDate: Monday, March 9th from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Once again, I have made arrangements for us to volunteer at Meals on Wheels on Monday March 9th. When we were last there, Sylvia, Norma, Sue and myself breaded about 160 pounds of chicken and made meatballs while Jim, Cliff, Nordahl and Arvid chopped peppers and made sandwiches. Jason, the head cook at Meals on Wheels is always amazed at the amount of work we get done and that we can talk and work at the same time. We tell him it is called experience. It is a fun time and we always leave with a feeling of accomplishment however Jim said he doesn’t want to see another pepper in a long time.

Please let me know at [email protected] or by phone at 780-436-7286 if you can help out on March 9th.

Thanks

Sharon Bruce

District 4 Convention – Watford City, ND & Folk Art Exhibit & CompetitionContact Emily Moen or Sylvia Colleton

The biennial District 4 Convention is an opportunity for Sons of Norway members from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana and North Dakota to gather for both business and celebration, especially as Sons of Norway is celebrating 125 years. Kondolanse:• Anderson, Anders Roald August 17, 1930 - January 10, 2020 It is with great sadness, the family of Anders Roald Anderson announce his passing on January 10, 2020, at the age of 89 years.

He is remembered with love by his wife Eleanor, son Anders (Elaine}, grandsons Anders Richard and Eric and son Brian (Robin}, grandchildren Alexandra and Jordan. Anders was born in Lloydminister, Saskatchwen and married Eleanor on July 16, 1955 in a dual wedding ceremony with Eleanor’s sister Marjorie to Edward Gomuwka. Anders and Eleanor lived in various locations around Alberta including Brazeau, Wabamun, Calgary and Edmonton.

• BJorGUM, Leroy (Lee) Alton October 16, 1930 - January 28, 2020 When Lee Bjorgum passed away on January 23, 2020, we lost a remarkable Albertan, an astute Canadian and a wonderful old soul who saw the world in a good way.

You can bet he took his faith with him and also, a painful regret at leaving wife Marian (Haggerty), after 68 years. Together, she and he cherished their children Jon, Lyndel (Dave), Shar (Byron), Glenise and Pam. Along with 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grands.

On October 16, 1930, Lee was born on a farm in Kingman, Alberta.

From the spelling of his name, his use of skaal in a Toast and his fondness for pickled herring, he was obviously Norwegian. He was also a fine teacher, an entrepreneur, a community contributor and a man of the world with an amazing focus on people. His family and friends have so many memories of him, including one they all share: Lee Bjorgum had time for all of us.

A gathering to remember him was held at Hope Lutheran Church, on Thursday, February 6, 2020. The family will lay him to rest at a graveside gathering at Kingman Cemetery, later this summer.

• eVJen, James David January 10, 2020 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James David Evjen on Friday, January 10, 2020 at the age of 55 years.

James was born in Beaverlodge, Alberta and moved to Sherwood Park at a young age. He lived and worked in Edmonton all of his adult life. James loved sports. He was a dedicated Oilers fan and his involvement with the Sherwood Park Mixed Slo Pitch Ball League spanned more than two decades, as a player and in various leadership roles. He will be remembered for his unique wit and sense of humor. It was appreciated by family, friends and co-workers alike. He enjoyed making us laugh.

He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife Nathalie Hammond, parents John and Helen Evjen, brother Rick, sister Charlotte (Mike), nieces Erika (Luke) and Kalli (Evan), nephews Jarvin (Alicia), Thomas and Lucas, great-nieces Annya and Aubrey

and Uncle Art (Judy). Also, his mother and father-in-law, Michelle and Wilfred Hammond, brother-in-law Craig, sister-in-law Vicki Lefebvre (Daniel) and their sons Cadam and Mckale. BidosSource: www.recipereminiscing.word-press.com

4 servings

Ingredients:

• 1.1 lb. / 500 g filet of reindeer or reindeer steak (other big game or even beef can be used of course but then the authenticity is lost)

• 4 Tbsp. flour

• 2 pt. / 10 dl water

• 4 potatoes

• 2 carrots

• 1/2 onion

• 1 tsp. salt

• 1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions:

1. Cut the meat into cubes, and place in a casserole.

2. Make flour thickening by mixing flour and about 3 ml or 1/2 tsp. of water (cold). Pour flour thickening and remaining water over the meat. Bring to the boil, stirring to avoid lumps in the sauce.

3. Peel potatoes and cut them in half. Peel carrots and cut them into thick slices. Chop the onion. Put the po-tatoes and vegetables in the pot and cook until potatoes are tender.

4. Season with salt and pepper. If you want a darker sauce you can add a few drops of caramel. Serve bidos with freshly baked whole wheat bread, butter and cranberries.

NB! To get nice color and good taste on the dish, it is important to pour the flour thickening over the meat before starting to cook it.

Tip: Leek and other vegetables can be added to the casserole for varia-tion. But then it is no longer a simple and authentic bidos but tastes incred-ibly delicious anyway.

Norwegian Burgers Recipe from “The Norwegian Kitch-en,” available for purchase through the Vesterheim Bookstore. www.vesterheim.org
