2006 - A BUSY YEAR FORIRISH LIFEBOATS.

Irish Lifeboats were called out on 907 occasions during 2006 andthe voluntary lifeboat crews rescued 990 lives, making this, anoth-er busy year for the RNLI. The figures show that there was anaverage of 19 people rescued every week during the twelve-month

period. The mostcommon type of casu-alty was poweredpleasure craft, with237 incidents record-ed, ¼ of the total fig-ure, while fishing ves-sels accounted for 173callouts.The YoughalLifeboat was called

out on 13 occasions and succeeded in rescuing 12 people during2006, while our neighbouring stations - Ballycotton launched 21times rescuing 47 people and Helvick Head, Co Waterfordresponded to 17 incidents rescuing 24 people. The busiest of theseven Co Cork lifeboat stations was Crosshaven in Cork Harbour, their voluntary crews answered 42 callouts and rescued 46. In totalthe seven Cork Lifeboats based at Youghal, Ballycotton,Crosshaven, Kinsale, Courtmacsherry Harbour, Baltimore andCastletownbere answered 143 callouts and rescued 175 people. There are 55 RNLI lifeboats based at 43 stations around the IrishCoast, which also includes two inland waterway stations based atDromineer, Co Tipperary on the river Shannon and Enniskillen onthe Erne Waterway. Some of the 43 stations operate 2 lifeboats, one for inshore rescues and another for offshore duties.Commenting on the figures, RNLI Divisional Inspector for IrelandMr Colin Williams says: " It was another busy year for our volun-tary crews, with the continued improvements in technology and astrong emphasis on training of our volunteers, lifeboats are reach-ing casualties faster. As a charity the RNLI only exists through thegenerousity of our volunteers. From the men and women who giveup their time to train and be available to serve on our lifeboats, tothe station management and our fundraising volunteers, they allhave a vital role to play".

NEW WELSH ASSEMBLYFEARFUL OF YOUGHAL

DANCERSOver 20 musicians and dancers from Ceolta Si, the performing arm ofYoughal Comhaltas, will top the bill at a number of highly prestigiousperformances in Cardiff next weekend. The main group will fly outfrom Cork Airport early on Friday morning 9th of March, while a small-er group will take the sea ferry route from Rosslare. Amongst thosewelcoming them to the Welsh capital will be the Chairman andMembers of the Welsh Assembly, the Newport Branch of Comhaltasand various local dignitaries. The invitation derives from the growing success and reputation ofCeolta Si which recorded record numbers every night in the WalterRaleigh Hotel and Bru na Si Cultural Centre last summer. The groupalso performed in numerous cultural events in 06,including a perform-ance to over four hundred guests of the Lyons Club of Ireland atTrabolgan last June. They also performed open air in the streets ofLismore during the hugely successful Munster Fleadh Cheoil in July.Ceolta Si now in its 17th season has performed at foreign festivals in

the past, such as Holland, Brittany, London, the Isle of Man and Prague. For 2007 the group has received numerous international invitations.Inthis instance the accessability of the location appealed to the groupmembers, hense the visit to Cradiff. Other invitations for 2007 are stillvery much alive and as we go to press the Ceolta Si Group are aboutto finalise a once in a life time trip to Mexico. Meanwhile Ceolta Si's visit to Cardif will generate huge media atten-tion as the group will play to the entire Asslembly of the WelshParliament or "Senedd" as it is known in the Welsh language. Thegroup's itinerary commences on Friday afternoon 9th March at the new£67m Assembly building. The Welsh are obviously very proud of theirnew devolved "Senedd", beliving that it shows confidence in the futureof Wales. They are so proud of their new building, it seems the dancersof Ceolta Si will not be allowed to wear hard shoes while performingthere. The floor of the new Assembly building is made for the worldfamous Welch slate and the staff are fearful that the Irish dancers willscratch the surface.Perhaps the are fearful because they have heard that

the Irish Rugby Manager is from Youghal, who knows? Despite thisminor setback however the Youghal group are hoping to bring the roofdown when they perform there on this historic occasion. Later that Friday night sees Ceolta Si perform in a session at the IrishCentre in Cardiff where they will be greeted by the "Amairgin theGael" Branch of Comhaltas which is located in Newport, a sea sideresort just outside Cardiff. The official concert for the weekend willalso be at the Irish Centre on Saturday night. On both nights the groupsperformances will be supported by members of Cardiff's Irish commu-nity especially Irish set dancers. The activities for the weekend are alsoexpected to attract audiences from Welch Folkdancing groups who arealways keen to mingle with their Celtic cousins from Ireland. Then onSunday, the members of Ceolta Si will provide music and dance work-shops to the pupils of the Newport Branch of Comhaltas. It is hoped thatthe Youghal and Newport Branches of Comhaltas will formally twinwith each other over the weekend thus providing future generations ofyoung musicsans and dancers with oppurtunities to foster direct per-sonal links and develop mutual support and exchange programmes.Apart from the historical aspect of this trip the group are hoping to gen-erate cultural tourism interests while in Cardiff for East Cork and WestWaterford.Youghal Comhaltas is a vibrant example of a community scaling peaksfrom the base of a leg-up. Formed in 1982, it was literally nomadic andreliant on borrowed accomodation for over 20 years. Then YoughalTown Council leased them a greenfield site at Magnier's Hill. A€65,000 grant from ECAD, €35,000 from Cork County Council and a€50,000 loan, together with a local fundraising drive enabled it to buildits Bru na Si home and headquarters. The finished product is now mod-estly valued at €480,000. Bru na Si is now a major tourist and culturaldestination, with its exhibition room, three classrooms, reception area, and homely kitchen. Comhaltas provides weekly music and dance les-sons there to over 200 students, it runs an outreach program to local vil-lage schools and co-ordinates other activities such as weekly step danc-ing and set dancing classes, a weekly local radio show, regular con-certs, music session's and tourist shows. The Centers multi functionalspace is also available to a number of local groups such as, Tir Na nOgPre-School, Chatter Box Dance Troupe, Youghal Foroige Youth Club,Youghal Musical Society, A Bible Study Group. Not bad for a com-munity and voluntary group?

YOUGHAL SOCIO-ECONOMICDEVELOPMENT GROUP

By Michael TwomeyMembers of the Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group(YESDG) met with the Traders Working Group at the Red Storelast Wednesday evening to brainstorm strategies for improving theaesthetic and commercial life of the town centre. The YESDGhave been in operation since last May. Their mission statement is;1) Promote all great assets of Youghal for marketing to potentialclients. 2) Enhance the potential of heritage based tourism throughthe aesthetic beauty of the town centre. 3) Encourage a sophisti-cated enterprise centre, including the attraction of large-scale serv-ice centres. 4) The attraction of a medium sized sustainable indus-try. The group is made up of the following; Youghal Town Council- (Town Clerk and Mayor). Youghal Chamber of Tourism andbusiness person, County Councillor, Heritage regenerationProject, RAPID Co-ordinator, one Community person and theCommunity School Principal. This steering committee are sup-ported by advisory members: Tourism, East Cork AreaDevelopment Chief Executive, South Cork Enterprise Board andthe Director of Community and Enterprise Department of CorkCounty Council. Further support will be available occasionallyfrom additional members, FAS, DSFA, Educational representa-tives and others as needed. The group chairperson, Marie Powertold traders that she wanted the outcome of the meeting to showsome strategies that identify improvement for the town centre. Sherecalled a number of issues raised at the last meeting with thetraders. Some of these included suggestions for a logo for thetown, options for entertainment in the October to March season, attracting Tesco and Lidl shoppers into the town centre, promo-tional video for Youghal, public relations strategies for promotingbusiness to be rolled out at different times of the year, such asChristmas. Regular feedback to the media, projecting positiveimage through different means such as window displays, trainingfor creating quality customer service, optimize the uniqueness ofYoughal buildings, heighten unique shopping experience andwebsite promotion. Ms. Power suggested that the traders consideragreeing to give the town an overall recognizable theme and citedthe use of logos that represent towns in West Cork as an example. The issue of signage was raised as a possible way of promotingcertain aspects of the town. Traders were informed that many ofthe signs that would fill this remit will be erected as part of theHeritage and Regeneration Plan. It was also suggested that board-ing be erected to let people know that this plan is in action. The traders were informed that posts were to be filled that wouldhelp with putting strategies in place. A Marketing and TourismOfficer will be joined by an Arts and Heritage DevelopmentOfficer and Enterprise post to facilitate new innovative plans foremployment. Signage for the entrance of the town was also dis-cussed. Helping non-English speaking customers was an issue thatwon a lot of support. It was thought that staff could use training tolearn simple Polish phrases to enhance the shopping experience.Trader, Michael Farrell suggested that the 'wrong perception' ofthe traders existed in town and that people needed to be 'educated'about the role of traders in providing jobs in the town. He addedthat making the town centre 'child friendly' would help bring peo-ple back to the heart of the town. He said a simple promotion ofawareness could be achieved through school quizzes with noveltyquestions regarding enterprises at the town centre. Other concernsand ideas raised centred on the following. Aaron O' Sullivan saidthat anti-social behaviour by youths is having a negative effect onthe town's image. This received a lot of comments from the groupabout possible alternatives with the pursuit of a youth café dis-cussed. However, it was remarked that some youths would still notuse such a facility. Catherine Arnott asked if the reopening of theClockgate to the public was a possibility and suggested thatYoughal copy the continental tradition of sand bedded volleyballcourts. She also wanted to know if Myrtle Grove could be madeaccessible as a tourist attraction. The information given was thatMyrtle Grove is in private ownership but opening times are part of

attraction. The information given was that Myrtle Grove is in pri-vate ownership but opening times are part of ongoing discussionwith the owners. The Clockgate houses archives that will bemoved to St. Mary's allowing for a review of the Clockgate's pub-lic access once that process is complete. The meeting was con-cluded when Ms. Power asked the traders how they visualize thetown in ten years. Most agreed that a heritage theme or 'oldYoughal' image would be suitable. The next meeting will be heldon the 3rd of April.

YOUTH CAFEBy Michael Twomey

The Youghal Youth Project continue their campaign to secure apremises for the setting up of a youth cafe. The idea of a youthcafe has been a vision long held over the last three decades but hasalways failed to materialise. Current Youth Officer, Nicola Luceyhas written a letter to the Youghal Town Council in an effort toraise the profile of the Project's efforts over the past year. "A num-ber of young people have voiced their concern regarding the avail-ability of youth friendly facilities in Youghal. Basically, they feelthere are not enough youth facilities available to them and the onlychoice they have is to hang about the streets," she said. Nicola hasbeen pro-active in her work with the youth of the town overlook-ing programmes like the youth club and the hugely successful 'YFactor' with fellow organiser, Bobby Lee. The Youghal YouthProject was established in September 2005 and is managed byForoige, the National Youth Organisation. The project is corefunded by Dormant Accounts and is advised by a local inter-agency group called the Youghal Youth Development Committee(YYDC). In her letter, Nicola referred to a report published lastweek by the East Cork Area Development (ECAD) called 'Wheredo you go when you go out' which explores some of the difficul-ties facing the youth population. Nicloa said the report confirmsher concerns for local young people. "The report highlights theproblems currently facing the youth of Youghal as a result of nothaving a space to call their own. The YYDC applied for fundingthrough the Dormant Accounts in January 2006 to develop a youthcafe within the town. Last May we received confirmation from AnPobail that Youghal would be granted ?162,000 to employ oneyouth worker to manage the cafe. I had great delight in telling theyouth, who were extremely optimistic about what could beachieved. Unfortunately, renting premises in Youghal is not verycost effective and will consume a large portion of the budget," shesaid. Nicola believes for the cafe to operate successfully the serv-ice will have to be financially viable and accessible. She addedthat the youth in the town are aware of several vacant buildings, some of which they consider to be suitable to their needs. Sheadded that the letter to the local Council was a 'point of informa-tion' and advised them that. 'young people need a place to gowhere they don't have the worry of getting told to leave the prem-ises when their money runs out or because they are seen to be loi-tering'. To encourage the Council the ECAD report was includedwith the letter. In response, Youghal The Town Clerk, Liam Ryanadvised the Youth Project to meet with Cumman na Daoine, whoonly recently acquired the use of the League of the Cross building. He said if the two could 'come to an arrangement for the Leagueof the Cross building' it would be a 'perfect marriage'. "Bothgroups would be filling their social agendas, sharing overheadsand ensuring their success," he said. However, Nicola said thatoption might be closed off before it begins because the time framefor using the Dormant Account funds will have passed.

The sports hall waspacked with staff, dignitaries, town officials, public representativesand invited guests. The expectant crowd was entertained by theschool choir on a rain soaked morning. When the Taoiseach took tothe podium he thanked those who had worked diligently to ensurethe amalgamation of the three secondary schools had a successfuloutcome. He cited the school's stature as a 'centre of excellence'while reminding the audience of the debt owed to former educa-tors. Youghalhas a proud tradition of education excellence and that will contin-uue in a school built for the 21st century. We must never forget thevast contribution of the religious orders. The Loreto and theChristian Brothers rose to the challenge of complex issues runningschools that equalled any in the world. It's an exciting time for thestudents to be part of a school with up to date technology but noneof this would have been possible without the religious orders. Theschool can be proud to boast a vibrant Gael Scoil. Thank you forwhat you have done to foster our language. This is the first com-munity school to have an Irish stream," he said. The Taoiseach thenreferred to a number of Youghal's success stories in regard to pastpupils, one of which was Irish rugby coach Eddie O' Sullivan. Hesaid their success was due to 'hard work and self sacrifice'. Headded they had 'contributed to sport, science arts and medicine'.He continued. "We owe a great deal to them and what they havegiven Youghal, the county, the country and around the world." Thecomplexities faced and overcome in the year leading up to amalga-mation brought praise and appreciation. "To achieve the facilitiestook idealism and vision. I would like to thank the former princi-pals, Mary Crotty, Dr. Kieran Groeger and John Bresnihan, BernieHeffernan, Sr. Carmel, the Board of Management and teachers. Asyou are aware Youghal is steeped in history and you can now right-ly claim Pobalscoil na Trionoide as the jewel in the crown of the21st century. It is a wonderful story of success and it took a hugeteam to make it possible." In concluding, he called the school a'school of excellence' that would greatly benefit the region. A visi-bly proud Principal, Seamus O' Ceallachain highlighted the ethosand vision of the school, citing the struggle of the salmon as ananalogy for the progression through school life. "It is a great hon-our to welcome the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. This is an historicevent in the provision of Post Primary education in Youghal andsurrounding Parishes. The building is just a foundation stone. Theethos of the school is to help students to a greater understanding ofhumanity." He added that a pursuit to develop plans for a canteen, and all weather soccer pitches, facilities that 'will be open to all thecommunity', is ongoing. He concluded. I'm a proud principal, proud of the staff, proud of the students. They are a credit to theWest Waterford and East Cork area." Chairperson of the Board ofManagement, Sr. Camel Swords followed on the theme when sheadded. "The characteristic spirit of the school is one of openess and

characteristic spirit ofthe school is one ofopeness and inclu-siveness where stu-dents are cherishedequally regardless ofability, gender, creed, class or ethnic back-ground. The schoolaims to instil a spiritof intellectualenquiry and academ-ic endeavour in thepupils, fostering inthem a desire for par-ticipation and chal-lenge, striving tobuild individual andcompassionate youngmen and women ofcharacter. The schoolstrives to respond tothe educational needs of the students, respecting the individualstrengths and needs of each one" Marie Céline Clegg IBVM,President, Association of Community and Comprehensive Schoolsstated that while the school was recognised as a centre of excel-lence, care of the individual student was central to it’s success. "Icongratulate staff, teaching and non-teaching, on the fact that thisschool has already established itself as a Centre of Excellence in thedelivery of the curriculum in an inclusive environment while hav-ing as one of it’s hallmarks the care of the individual student atevery level. To parents and guardians who have entrusted their sonsand daughters to the school I assure you that your role as parents isvital to the development of this school into the future." TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE MOON Photo Michael Hussey

Sky watchers in Youghal had a night to remember as the Heavens remained clearfor the most spectacular lunar eclipse in over a decade. The first total eclipse of thefull Moon in three years was clearly visible as weather conditions were perfect. Thesurface of the full Moon went entirely dark between 10.45 and 11.48 last Saturdaynight. The phenomenon occurres when the Earth passes directly between the Moonand the Sun. Picture shows the Earths shadow creeping across the Moons surfaceprior to total eclipse.

Don’t Forget Mother’s Day - March 18th!!THE STORY OF MOTHER'S DAY

THE earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to thespring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Motherof the Gods. During the 1600s, England celebrated a day called"Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40day period leading up to Easter*), "Mothering Sunday" honoredmothers. During this time many of the poor worked as servants forthe wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the ser-vants would live at the houses of their employers. On MotheringSunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged toreturn home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a fes-tive touch.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebrationchanged to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gavethem life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festi-val blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People beganhonouring their mothers as well as the church.

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 byJulia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of theRepublic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organ-ised Mother's Day meetings in Boston every year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establisha national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church inGrafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the secondanniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By thenext year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, busi-nessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a nationalMother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was cele-brated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914,made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as anational holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday ofMay. While many countries of the world celebrate their ownMother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are somecountries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, andBelgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday ofMay.

Don’t Forget Mother’s Day - March 18th!!A FOODIE FESTIVAL

MOTHERING Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sundaybecause the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed that day. Originallyboth Old and New Testament lessons on mid-lent Sunday made apoint of food. The Gospel reading from the New Testament toldthe story of how Jesus fed five thousand people with only fivesmall barley loaves and two small fish.“Now there was much grass in the place; so the men sat down, innumber about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and whenhe had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seat-ed; so also the fish, as much as they wanted.” John 6:10-12

Simnel cakeThe food item specially associated with Mothering Sunday is theSimnel cake. A Simnel cake is a fruit cake with two layers ofalmond paste, one on top and one in the middle. The cake is madewith 11 balls of marzipan icing on top representing the 11 disci-ples. (Judas is not included.) Traditionally, sugar violets wouldalso be added.

Why Simnel? The name Simnel probably comes from the Latin word similawhich means a fine wheat flour usually used for baking a cake. There's a legend that a man called Simon and his wife Nell arguedover whether the cake for Mothering Sunday should be baked orboiled. In the end they did both, so the cake was named after bothof them: SIM-NELL.

Homemade giftsShow your mum you care by making her the following treats. Buya pretty gift box or cellophane bag, line with some unbleached tis-sue paper or scrunched-up greaseproof paper and fill with a selec-tion of the homemade biscuits. If you've used a box then wrap cel-lophane round it and tie up with a big bow. Decorate with ribbonsand artificial or real flowers.

Lemon and passionfruit shortbread biscuits Serves 16 biscuits Preparation time 30 mins to 1 hourCooking time 30 mins to 1 hourIngredients225g/8oz unsalted butter, at room temperature75g/3oz caster sugar275g/10oz plain flour sifted75g/3oz fine semolina1 tsp grated lemon zestflesh and seeds from 1 ripe passion fruitpinch of saltextra caster sugar, to tasteMethod1. Preheat the oven to 160C/325F/Gas 3.2. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and caster sugar untilthe mixture turns a lighter colour and is creamy in consistency. This can be done with a wooden spoon, rather than an electricmixer. Beat in the flour, salt, semolina, lemon zest and passionfruit, then use your hands to form a pliable dough. 3. On a floured surface, roll your dough with your hands into along sausage shape, roughly 5cm/2in in diameter. Wrap in clingfilm and put in the fridge for about 30 minutes then roll as above. 4. Once chilled, cut 1cm/½in rounds with a sharp knife, trying notto put too much pressure on the dough or you'll end up with a flatedge to the biscuits. 5. Place the rounds on a couple of greased baking sheets and bakein the oven for about 35 minutes until lightly golden. Lift gentlyfrom the tray and sprinkle with caster sugar. Once they're coolenjoy straight away or store in an airtight container.

It was opened in 1951 as a one-teacher schoolbut has since grown and now has two very dedicated teachers.Pupil teacher ratios in Park at present are small with all eight stan-dards currently enrolled. Naturally a full and complete RevisedCurriculum is taught and school strengths lie in art, P.E., I.C.T. andscience. Multi-grade teaching is the norm and the pupils of Parkare living proof of the advantages of such a system. At present the school is actively engaged in the Discovery ScienceProgramme. This programme aims to develop creativity in chil-dren, show them how important science is to our everyday livesand more importantly how much fun it can be! Since Septemberthe children from first to sixth class have conducted a series of

huge success in enhancing science in Park School. On completionof the programme in May Park School hope to receive an excel-lence in science award. These experiments were on display on thenight and were indeed a great success.I.C.T. is a priority in Park School and the school now has 9 com-puters in total, the children are very I.T. literate and are particular-ly skilled in Word, Power Point and Publisher. Some of thesePowerPoint presentations were on display on the night and werereally something to be proud of.The school was also honoured with receiving a Health PromotingSchool award, this award was presented to the school by FrancesDeasy from the Health Promoting Unit and Minister MichaelAhern. The school had spent the last four years promoting healthin the school, this was achieved through a number of activities, theschool were actively involved in promoting healthy lunches andthis was further enhanced with the children compiling their ownbook entitled "Healthy Lunchbox Ideas". Park School also active-ly promotes exercise and often partake in whole school activity. The night was indeed a huge success it is clear that everybody atPark N.S. strives to provide a school climate that is well-ordered,caring and happy. Respect, tolerance and fairness are evident andexpectations like standards are high.Park N.S. is now enrolling for September 2007. YOUGHAL RUGBY CLUB YOUTH SECTION

Under 16 Cup 1st Round Our under 16's were at home to Mallow last Saturday at Frogmorein a first round cup tie. Conditions were good for this game inspiteof heavy rain during the week. Youghal were first to settle andafter 10 minutes play Paul Quill got over for a well taken try.Youghal were playing well at this stage and their efforts wererewarded when Anthony Mason scored near the posts Scrum halfKeith Mc Carthy converted to give Youghal a 12 point lead.Theseasiders kept pressure on the Mallow team for the next few min-utes and when winger Michael Healy made a break inside theMallow half he found Greg Jaywardene in support to score nearthe posts. Keith Mc Carthy added the extras to give Youghal a 19pt lead. Mallow to their credit kept plugging away and their effortsbore fruit just before half time when they scored near the cornerflag. This try left the half time19 pts to 5 pts in Youghal's favour. In the second half Mallow's heavier pack got on top and theyreduced the lead further when they scored following a 5metrescrum. However Youghal worked their way up field and when theball reached winger Niall Clohessy he scored over for a superb try.Keith Mc Carthy once again added the conversion points. Mallowhad the final score shortly afterwards to leave the final scoreYoughal 26 pts. Mallow 17 pts. Best for Youghal were CianKenneally, Danny O' Brien and Paul Quill in the forwards whileGreg Jaywardene, Alan Frahill O'Connor and Niall Clohessy wereoutstanding in the back line. YOUGHAL BADMINTON CLUBYoughal's Division 6 team has continued its impressive leagueform into the new year winning all 3 matches. A revenge homedefeat of then league leaders St Marys by 4-3, was followed by a5-2 away win at Bartlemy and a recent 6-1 home defeat ofChurchtown. Youghal have finished top of league section A with5 wins out of 6 and now head into the upcoming league playoffsemi-final on March 25th full of confidence where the likelyopponents will be UCC.The team also had a decent run in the Cup beating Bartlemy andSt Marys B to reach the semi-finals in Mahon. However, shortnotice of the semi-final match and prior commitments of some ofthe players meant the team had to compete against Ballinadee witha man short. It was a great achievement to draw 3-3 on the dayhaving to forfeit one match but unfortunately Ballinadee advancedto the final on a points count-back.The club would like to express sincere thanks to Timmy Masonfor his continuous help and support especially during our homematches. We would also like to wish Paul Hegarty well after hisrecent retirement from the club. We are holding a fundraising Table Quiz on Friday 23rd March inthe GAA club bar at 8pm. Teams of four cost €30 to enter withcash prizes on offer. A raffle will also be held on the night and allare welcome to attend.

An outstanding and wonderful success is how I would describeour 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Imokilly RegionalExecutive held in Garryvoe Hotel on Saturday last Feb 24th. Itwas a great event which allowed both past and present membersof macra to get together in celebration of 50 years of the region. Many of the past members hadn't seen each other for years and itwas a great opportunity to catch up on their current situations andreminisce about past times in macra. There was a little help toowith people able to view many photos of fun times in the regionboth past and present. Our main sponsor, to whom we are very grateful was Dairygoldand board member Liam Foley spoke about Dairygolds new struc-ture and also about the opportunities that the bio fuel industrycould present to farmers in the future. Our National President,Colm Markey spoke of the firm friends, the craic and fun elementof macra as well as the personal development gained from beinginvolved in the organisation. The main message was that "you getout of Macra what you put into it" and anyone who has been andis involved in the organisation can definitely confirm and reiteratethat! One of the highlights of the night was the cutting of the 50thAnniversary cake, sponsored by Ballymaloe House and cut byAlison Tait, current Regional secretary and Myrtle Allen propri-etor of Ballymaloe House, who was very involved in the regionalexecutive in its early years and held the position of National VicePresident for the terms 1960/61 and 1962/63 - a major achieve-ment.Our master of ceremonies on the night was Alison Tait, currentregional secretary who did a superb job. The organising commit-tee was made up of seven people, all of whom had a major role toplay in organising and ensuring the success of this event. They areas follows: Alison Tait, Brian O'Connell, Martin Manning, PaddyRice, Tom McGrath, Imelda Lynch and myself Linda Kenneally. We had many other sponsors as well to whom we are most grate-ful, each of whom took out adds in our souvenir booklet. Thanksalso to those who provide spot prizes and of course to GarryvoeHotel who were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

COFFEE MORNING AT BELLA ROMA IN AID OF

SOFT IRELAND.The Coffe Morning was a great suc-cess as we raised about €2,500 forSoft Ireland. Just to explain who softIreland are, they are a support organi-sation for Trisomy 13/18 which isedwards syndrome and PatauSyndrome which are chroosomal dis-orders. Babies born with these syn-dromes often have serious life-threat-ening conditions, with developmentaldelay and limited life expectancy.More girls then boys are born withthese syndrome. The incidence of tri-somy 13 is about 1 in 10,000 of totalbirths while that of trisomy 18 isabout 2.5 in 10,000 of total births.Soft support family of babies thathave passed or family who have children still living they also putfamilies in contact with one another, provide information, publishregular newsletters, organise professional speakers and confer-ences etc. My daughter Leah was born with edwards syndrome ayear ago, she lived for six weeks. I am now on committee of SoftIreland which is a voluntary support group.

THE AILBRIN SOCIETY, YOUGHALThis month's talk to the Ailbrin Society is the last presentation ofthe season and for the occasion Jeremy Meehan of Bóthair willgive a talk about the work of that exceptional organisation. Thetitle of his presentation is "Bóthair: Farm Animals in DevelopmentAid" and, using PowerPoint, he will illustrate his subject andbring to life aspects of the work of Bóthair. The use of farm ani-mals as development aid is topical at present and, as Director ofEducation in Bóthair's Cork office, Jeremy Meehan is well-placedto acquaint us with the facts. Though Bóthair has other develop-mental strategies, it is the "farm animal" paradigm which excitesthe imagination of donors, especially in a rural Irish context. Onthe night, a book entitled "Development in an Unequal World"will be on sale at a slightly discounted price. This is a collabora-tive work by a group of NGOs and includes a piece by JeremyMeehan. Leaflets on Bóthair will also be available.
