Grade 6 News! On Tuesday, February 28, the grade 6’s at MCS celebrated the exploration of their Sky Science Unit, also known as Marsville. They built bio domes, and invited guests to come and learn about the creative ways they could support visitors on their planet or moon. A special thanks goes out to Black Diamond Rona for donating materials for the domes, and to the parent volunteers who came out to help us build. Way to go Wildcats!

Youth Leadership Program Every young person has the potential to become a good communicator and leader – if this potential is developed. Youth Leadership Programs, which are sponsored and conducted by Toastmasters International and their local Clubs, help students build their communication and leadership skills so they may become tomorrow’s leaders in business, industry and the community.

The program’s unique eight-session, workshop-style design enables participants to develop this potential through practical experience. The program provides emphasis on specialized speaking and leadership skills. Participants learn to:

• Overcome nervousness when speaking before an audience. • Organize and present ideas logically and convincingly. • Listen carefully to others’ ideas. • Offer advice to help others improve their speaking and leadership skills. • Participate in and lead meetings.

Upon completion of the program the students receive a Certificate and leave with increased self-confidence, refined communication skills and further developed leadership abilities.

We are pleased to announce a partnership between Fluor Communicators Toastmasters Club and Millarville Community School’s Grade 7 class. Beginning March 1 the Grade 7 class will be participating in the Youth Leadership Program and will have seasoned Toastmasters members come to teach, demonstrate and encourage them. Students will gain experience in working with a meeting agenda, being an emcee and introducing people, both impromptu and prepared speeches, and peer evaluations. Save the date for the morning of April 26 for our final showcase event!

For more information about Toastmasters or the Youth Leadership Program, you can visit www.toastmasters.org or contact Lisa Branch [email protected] Lisa Branch, ACB ALB President, Fluor Communicators Toastmasters Club YLP Coordinator

Nutrition Month 2017

March is Nutrition Month! We know that eating should be joyful, not a source of frustration and confusion. Here are a few quick tips for taking the mayhem out of meal time: Plan a Healthy Plate Balanced meals helps you and your family meet your nutrient needs. Try this step by step guide when planning your meal:

1. Fill half of your plate with vegetables. More than one type will make it easier to fill up! 2. Fill about a quarter of your plate with whole grains, such as brown rice, wild rice, whole grain pasta, quinoa, or barley. 3. The last quarter of your plate belongs to meat and alternatives. Fish, beans, chicken, eggs, meat, and nuts all count! Meat alternatives like beans and lentils are nutritious and budget-friendly. 4. Include milk and alternatives, such as a glass of milk with your meal or yogurt for dessert.

Set yourself up to eat more vegetables and fruit:

• Keep fruit on the table for a “grab and go” snack. • Stock up on frozen or canned fruit and vegetables without added sugar and salt - they

keep longer than fresh and don’t require any washing or chopping. • Shred carrots or zucchini into stews, chili, pasta sauces, rice dishes or stir fries. • Cut up vegetables and have them in the refrigerator in see-through containers at eye-

level so you quickly grab and eat them.

Check out www.healthyeatingstartshere.ca for additional tips, information, and recipes to help you make healthy eating choices. Happy Nutrition Month!
