Château Margaux

Perhaps the grandest of the Bordeaux châteaux, Château Margaux is the epitome of style and refinement. At Château Margaux one has truly arrived at the heart and soul of Bordeaux, the world’s most renowned wine region.

For centuries before the French Revolution, the château was owned by the Lestonnac family. The revolution, though, saw the estate’s owners beheaded, and when the heirs were unable to pay the costs of running the château, Margaux was put up for auction.

The successful bidder, the Marquis de la Colonilla, demolished the old château, and in 1802 work began on the grand château we know today. The Château was sold several times until it was acquired by the Ginestets, longtime shareholders who finally became sole owners in 1949, with the purchase financed by the sale of their St Emilion property, Clos Fortet. However, First Growth châteaux are expensive to run, and to finance the operations of the estate, the owner sold off the vineyards of Dufort Vivens in the 1960s and transferred Cos d’Estournel to his sister in 1971. Even those moves, though, were not enough, and collapse of the Bordeaux market in the early 1970s forced Ginestet to sell the château in 1976 to Greek supermarket magnate Andre Mentzelopoulos. A serious oenophile, he was also a major shareholder in the French wine firm, Nicolas.

Château Mouton rothsChild

Mouton, like much of Pauillac in the sixteenth century, was part of the sprawling Ségur estate. In the mid-eighteenth century the land that is now Mouton Rothschild was acquired by Baron de Brane, who changed the name to Brane-Mouton. Brane sold it in 1830 to an M Thuret; while it was already a notable Château, first appearing in a Christie’s catalog in 1834, Thuret did not make maintenance of the Château a priority and resold it in 1853. The purchaser was Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, at the time head of the English arm of the wealthy Rothschild family.

While Mouton was always a highly regarded wine, a big change came when in 1922, when the twenty-one-year-old Baron Philippe decided to run the Château full-time. An innovator from the start of his tenure, in 1924 he decided that in order to guarantee quality the entire production would be bottled at the Château, and from 1934 he numbered each bottle released. Also, of course, he started the tradition of works of art on Mouton labels, featuring the famous Carlu ram’s head from 1924 to 1926, and since a hiatus from then until 1945, each label has either been designed by a major artist or featured a tribute to a significant event in the Château’s history.

Perhaps his most significant achievement was persuading the French Minister for Agriculture, Jacques Chirac, that Mouton was and had always been a First Growth that had been wrongly classified. So, in 1973, for the first and only time, a revised edition of the 1855 classification was released with Mouton finally ranked, next to its Pauillac neighbors Lafite and Latour, as a First Growth.

FIRST GROWTH BORDEAUX AND CALIFORNIA CULT WINES FROM 1985 TO 2002 (LOTS 59-110)

Zachys is honored to offer another tranche of wine owned by a longtime collector and writer who is as passionate about wine as he is philanthropic with his many friends. All of these wines were either purchased on release—from D.C. retailers for the Bordeaux, or directly from the wineries for the California wines--and stored thereafter in two home wine rooms controlled at 55 degrees F.

Leading the parade of classic wines are four cases of Margaux 1986 in original wood, and multiple dozens of Araujo Eisele from 1992 (the second vintage) through 2001. Three of the leading producers of Napa wines of the 1980s—Heitz, Dunn, Phelps, appear in depth. The original wooden case of Phelps Eisele Cabernet Sauvignon 1985 is not to be missed; it is one the greatest wines ever produced at Phelps, and indeed, in Napa. A recent visit to the consignor’s home afforded the opportunity to perform further “due diligence.” We sampled La Mission 1981, Cos d’Estournel 1982, Margaux 1985, and Gruaud Larose 1986, and all were superb, right down to the dregs.

All Araujo wines are made from organically and biodynamically produced fruit grown on the Araujo estate located in the northeast Napa Valley, near Calistoga.

Established 120 years ago, and planted to Cabernet Sauvgnon in 1964, the Eisele Vineyard consists of well-drained cobbly soils that produce a low-yield, highly concentrated crop furnishing intensely fruited and powerfully long lived wines of class and character. When the Araujo family acquired the vineyard in 1990 it was replanted to the best varietal clones suited for elite quality wine production. The family also constructed an underground cave system specifically for aging the wine in the most naturally ideal temperature and humidity conditions.

For as long as anyone can remember, Lafite has been the most highly regarded wine in Bordeaux. From their very first book, published in 1845, Cocks & Feret have listed Lafite first, and it was ranked first in the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux.

Fite is an old French term meaning small hill, rise or mound; it is from this humble feature in Bordeaux’ somewhat bland landscape that France’s most esteemed producer takes its name. The château itself is one of the oldest in Bordeaux, with much of it dating from the mid-sixteenth century. It was purchased by the wealthy Ségur family in the seventeenth century, but like much of the region at the time, the land was used for a variety of farming.

Beginning in the 1670s, the Ségurs spent around twenty years converting a large portion of the land to vineyards. With Latour and Calon, as well as Lafite, under their ownership, the Ségurs began to find a market for their wines in London. It was first mentioned in the London Gazette in 1707 and soon became famous: by the early 1730s, it was a favorite of the Prime Minister, Robert Walpole.

Lafite remained in the Ségur family until 1784. It was sold several times, finally to Baron de Rothschild in 1868, by which time there were some seventy-four hectares of vines. It was a new era of industrial wealth and the Rothschild purchase certainly added much celebrity to the area.

For over fifty years this remarkable restaurant was renowned for its celebrity clientele and the exceptional wine list that drove them back again and again. Now after several changes in ownership, it’s time to shed its skin of classic old Bordeaux in favor of a new style. The good news is that those bottles are now up for acquisition via the next fifty lots.

Dating back as far as 1966, the following lots represent some of the best vintages of Bordeaux in the twentieth century. There are numerous vintages of Lafite from 1978 through 2004, Latour from 1978 through 2002 and multiple vintages of Pétrus throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. As with any classic restaurant, all these lots represent loose bottles, remainders of original cases purchased on their release directly from wholesalers. These bottles have not been touched for decades, resting in the restaurant’s temperature controlled, below ground wine cellar. These bottles have perfect provenance.

Château latour

Some of my fondest wine memories are of drinking wine bottles of the renowned Château Latour. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest wine estates in the world. While its history goes well back to the fourteenth century, Latour began to be clearly defined as one of the greatest wine estates in the world in the mid-nineteenth century, and amazingly, It has kept that position for the last 150 years. Their wines, which are known for their power, richness and longevity, are sought after by collectors and wine lovers throughout the world.

As Robert M. Parker says of Château Latour in The World’s Greatest Wine Estates, “The wine produced here has been an impeccable model of consistent excellence, in great, mediocre, and poor vintages. For that reason, many have long considered Latour to be the Médoc’s finest wine… Latour remains one of the most concentrated, rich, tannic, and full-bodied wines in the world.“

In 2000, I had the wonderful opportunity to taste over twenty-five vintages of Château Latour, including fourteen wines older than 1961 and four from the nineteenth century. It was an evening I will never forget. The wines were so rich, alive and fresh. What an extraordinary experience it was to be able to taste the 1900 and the 1899 side by side and discuss the differences, or to argue whether the 1955 or the 1949 is showing better right now (at my table we all thought the 1955 had the slight edge). In the end we tasted Latour from a 125 year span and although there was a lot of discussion about which were the better wines, the final conclusion of everyone in the room was that, “Latour makes some of greatest wines that any of us have ever tasted.”

Pétrus

Pétrus today is a little over eleven hectares, including five hectares purchased in 1969 from neighboring Château Gazin. The vineyards have clay topsoil and gravelly subsoil, allowing good initial water retention but excellent longer term drainage. The vines are old, around forty to fifty years, planted with ninety percent Merlot and five percent Cabernet Franc. To increase concentration the vines are pruned extensively and a green harvest is performed. At harvest time, nearly two hundred workers pick the grapes at their peak of balance and ripeness. Sometimes up to four passes are needed but if pressed, as in 1982, the entire harvest can be completed in just one day.

The grapes are partially destemmed and after a fairly lengthy maceration period, sometimes almost a month, the wine spends twenty months in new oak before being fined (but not filtered) and bottled. Pétrus is a classic example of careful vineyard management and winemaking yet the result leaves evidence of something even greater. These methods combine with exquisite terroir for Merlot to create something that is, in good vintages, not only earth-shatteringly tasty, but distinctive, lending the name Pétrus majesty because of its quality but also its inimitability.

Château lafleuR

Originally part of the Le Gay estate, Lafleur is owned by the Robin family, also owners of Le Gay until 2002. Today Lafleur is managed by Jacques Guinaudeau, a cousin of the owners. The vineyard is just 200 meters from Pétrus and although gravelly in appearance, the soils do contain a fair amount of clay. The vines here are fairly old, having largely avoided the 1956 frost, and the yields are low, just twenty-six hl/ha. The grapes are total destemmed, and the wines spend roughly sixteen to twenty months in fifty percent new oak barriques.

This wonderful offering of Bordeaux comes from a personal longtime friend of Don Zacharia, Zachys CEO. The gems here include an imperial and bottles of 1982 Cheval Blanc and Mouton, and bottles of 1982s from Latour and Haut-Brion. A jeroboam of 2000 Mouton is a rare bird indeed, as is the wonderful 1928 Yquem. From Spain, legendary vintages of Único, such as the 1970 and the 1968 in magnum, as well as the 1994. These wines were bought on release and stored in temperature and humidity control.

What’s more the proceeds from this consignment will be donated by the consignor to two world-class organizations, one in Jackson Hole and one in New York City. The bottles of Lafite in this offering come from a highly-respected restaurant near Paris called “L’Aubergade.” In fact, these particular bottles were on the wine list when Cyril Ray wrote his seminal book on Lafite, called simply “Lafite,” published in 1969. Zachys tracked this book down and reprinted here the very pages that reference the specific bottles in this consignment. Today, the restaurant is managed by the 3rd genera-tion—similar to Zachys! These particular bottles were bought by the restaurant at the end of World War II, purchased by the grandfather of the current owner. The wines were noted on a handwritten inventory of the cellar done in 1996, of which Zachys obtained a copy. The wines in this offering were reconditioned at the restaurant by Robert Revelle, cellar master of Lafite, in 1988. At the time, Monsieur Revelle declared them good to drink, and the minor ullage of the wine was topped up with a bottle of Lafite from the cellar.

From the cellar of one of the world’s most famous wine collectors comes this offering of rare Lafite. We thought it best to let the collector himself tell the story!

“I drank two magnums of 1870 Lafite from Glamis Castle, and was asked to talk about them at a dinner in 1982 at Mustard’s Restaurant in Napa. The guests were my wife and I, Barney and Belle Rhodes, Ben Ichinose who provided the mags, Marvin and Sue Overton, Charlton Heston, Earnest Bourgnine, Lloyd Flatt, Tawfiq Khoury, Bob Knudsen, and Tom Lipscomb. The mid-shoulder mag of 1870 was the greatest wine that I have ever tasted! The neck-ullaged mag was considered by all to be too young, at 112 years old! When I was called upon to talk about the 1870 Lafite, I stood up and looked across the room to see Charlton Heston staring at me, and I thought, “what do you say to Moses?” It took me several seconds to regain my composure, and to this day I have no idea what I said. 38 years later, I have never had a wine that great! I only managed to procure 3 precious bottles of the 1870 Lafite from the famous Woodperry House Sale at Christie’s in 1976. I drank the worst ullaged of the three at my home in October 1978 with Michael Broadbent who proclaimed it in “perfect condition.” The second bottle I sold at my two-day Christie’s Auction in 2000. The bottle in this auction appeared to be in the best shape of the three and is the last pre-phylloxera wine remaining in my cellar. I bought the 1875 at a later date from the impeccable wine cellar of the daughter of the gentleman who first exposed me to really great older wines--Jack Pollard. She bought it from John Hart in the 1980s, and Lafite found it to be in excellent condition and recorked it in 1988.

The 1870 and 1874 were recorked in 1992 by Lafite’s cellar master as I watched.”

Day two focuses on his wide spread of burgundy. Here we see a similarly eclectic approach to collecting, with an impressive selection of burgundy. Featuring 52 lots of the incredible 2015 vintage, featuring DRC, Rousseau, Mugnier, Roumier, Rouget and a double magnum of Hudelot-Noellat Richbourg. After almost half a century of buying wines from Zachys, this great and loyal client has passed away. Now his estate is selling the remnants of his cellar. Most of these wines were purchased directly from Zachys, and several of our more-tenured colleagues remember personally delivering these into his cellar!

This consignment starts with Haut-Brion 1959 and only gets better from there. Shortly following are bottles of Latour 1949 and a magnum of the highly regarded 1966. Then, multiple vintages of Mouton and Pétrus including a case of the 1985 vintage. From there, multiple lots of exceptional cru Bordeaux in full case quantities through the 1980’s and 90’s.

For Italian wine lovers, there are several lots of some of the most sought after Giacosa bottlings from 1982 through 1990, with a spotlight on nine bottles of the Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Nieve Riserva. And, adding to this amazing consignment, is a stunning array of classic California Cabernets from the 1970’s and 80’s. These are represented in near verticals of Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, Opus One, and Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon.

As mentioned earlier, the bulk of these wines were purchased directly from Zachys retail and immediately delivered to the client’s temperature-controlled, New York area wine cellar.

Everyone has a wine journey, and this gentleman’s story began, as most of ours do, with the simple enjoyment of wine. Growing up in a large Italian family he became accustomed at a young age to enjoying every meal with a glass of vino. There was never a time in his life where wine was not a critical part of his daily regimen, and thus a young wine lover evolved into a wine collector.

He is an admirer of all the great wine regions and the below lots clearly reflect his love of French Wine with a touch of California and Italy thrown in for good measure. During day 1 we see the great Chateaux of Bordeaux with offers from all of the growths, most in OWC. Banded cases of Ornellaia in large format. And from the New World we see the great cult classic Screaming Eagle.

The Burgundy Sale is a true highlight with the great Domaine’s represented such as DRC, Leroy, Ponsot and the list goes on and on. With the wines being held in a temperature and humidity controlled home cellar, that was visited by one of our specialists and was in impeccable condition, you can raise your paddle high with complete confidence.

Château haut-Brion

Haut-Brion has the longest history of all the First Growths. It was even mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary entry of April 10,1663, when he was dining at the Royal Oak Tavern in Lombard Street, London: “...and here drank a sort of French wine called Ho Bryan that hath a good and most particular taste I never met with.”

The famous Pontac family set up the estate in the first portion of the sixteenth century. Wealthy and well connected, they had the means to promote the wine in fashionable places, and by the early 1700s it was as well known as a wine of the highest quality.

While parts were split off, the estate stayed with the family until it was passed to Joseph Fumel in 1780. He was largely responsible for creating much of what we see today, including the buildings, the gardens and the general layout of the property. He famously hosted a visit from Thomas Jefferson on May 25, 1787, and became Mayor of Bordeaux three years later.

With its popularity waning under a succession of different owners, the estate was finally put up for auction in 1836, where it was purchased by the Larreau family. Two years later, in 1838, they managed to acquire a further piece of the estate previously lost through inheritance laws.

Although it was included as a First Growth in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux, difficult times lay ahead. A further succession of owners and the depression of the early 1930s forced another sale. This time, successful American financier Clarence Dillon stepped up, and for a little under $200,000 walked away with the estate. It remains in the Dillon family today.

Penfolds grange

Penfolds’ first vineyard was established in 1844 at Magill, South Australia, by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold. For over 100 years, Penfolds, like most Australian wineries, produced mostly fortified wines and brandies. In 1950, Penfolds chief winemaker, Max Schubert, visited Europe, primarily to study sherry production in Spain. However, the last leg of the trip was a stop in Bordeaux where he was served forty plus year old examples of the great growths of the region. Being awed by the longevity of these unfortified reds, Shubert sought to produce a wine in Australia endowed with the same long-lived potential as the greats of Bordeaux.

The provenance on this lot is impeccable: the collection of esteemed collector Graeme Revell, sold at the inaugural Zachys LA auction in 2004. This auction, you may remember, made the pages of Wine Spectator for the record price of 1847 Yquem, and the record price on 1941 Inglenook, which was sold to Roman Coppola.

There is nothing so rare as 1950s Grange, and there is excellent and traceable provenance here. The wine was sold one other time, in 2006, to the current owner and has not left temperature-controlled storage since.

Colgin

Colgin Cellars was founded in 1992 by Ann Barry Colgin, an expert on fine art whose exposure to fine wine through that rarified world spurred her to create her own world-class wines. With vineyard management by David Abreu and winemaking by Helen Turley, the wine was immediately recognized as a new superstar in Napa, with the debut vintage scored 96 points by Robert Parker. Since then, he has awarded a perfect score of 100 points to three Colgin wines.

Colgin’s reputation was originally founded on their Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, made from 1992 to 2007. While that is no longer in the portfolio, Colgin today produces wines from two estate-owned sites and from vineyards owned and managed by Napa legend David Abreu. Two estate-grown single-varietal wines are produced, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tychson Hill Vineyard and a Syrah from the IX Vineyard. The other two wines in the portfolio are Bordeaux blends, the estate-grown IX Vineyard Red and Cariad, from Abreu’s vineyards.

We are thrilled that this longtime collector has decided to participate in this sale. The lots listed below, and the Burgundy on day 2 of the sale, represent only a portion of the wines that he has accumulated over the many years he has been collecting. As you can see, his tastes run the gamut from the old world of Bordeaux, to Champagne, to Burgundy, and some new world from California. The 10 lots (1809-1818) of Burgundy on offer during The Burgundy Auction include some of the most sought after producers from that region: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and JF Mugnier, Leroy are all featured therein. I have had the privilege of tasting a number of wines from this consignor’s collection, and they have all showed beautifully, which is understandable given the care and consideration with which this collector looks after his wines.

Château d’yQueM

Château d’Yquem is the apex qualitatively and the centre geographically of the Sauternes area. Each major property occupies its own little hill. Yquem’s is the highest. It is also the largest estate, the most perfectionistic, the most consistent. Unlike the rest of the region there was no cutting of corners, no lack of investment, no dip in quality in the sad days of the 1960s and 1970s.

At Yquem we have Sauternes winemaking at its most perfectionistic. The vines are pruned to yield nine hl/ha – one glass per vine (as opposed to a full bottle in a classified growth red wine château). Collection of the grapes is berry by botrytised berry, rather than by bunch or half-bunch elsewhere. The grapes are crushed in a small horizontal hydraulic press in three stages. Unlike in Champagne, for example, the first pressing does not necessarily give the best wine. There is no débourbage before the wine is put into cask. Fermentation and ageing is in new oak, of course, the latter taking place in a splendid underground cellar, constructed in 1987. The assemblage is late and the wine is not bottled for three years or more. Only then is it put on the market…

DiamonD Creek

Diamond Creek winery was established in 1968 as one of the first Cabernet Sauvignon-only wineries in Napa. The winery and vineyard plots sit atop Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley, a region known for its structured and long-lived wines and Diamond Creek meanders through the mountain and separates each of the vineyards. Each plot is named after the soil or marker from which it is tied: Volcanic Hill sits on white volcanic ash, Red Rock Terrace has a soil of red rock, Gravelly Meadow is made up of stony gravelly soil from a dried river bed and the Lake vineyard sits beside a lake.

Founder Al Brounstein recognized these differences immediately and bottled each of the winery’s microclimates on its own, an extremely unusual practice in that era. Distinction of microclimate leads to marked differences amongst the wines in bottle. Volcanic Hill is the warmest of all vineyards yielding a rich, lush, tannic wine built for aging. Red Rock Terrace is a warm vineyard producing the most accessible and velvety of the wines. Gravelly Meadow is the coolest microclimate and with vines that struggle in the gravel soil, and this wine exhibits an earthy, jammy, spicy quality. The Lake vineyard was first produced in 1978 and is the coolest vineyard of them all. Only produced in a handful of vintages, the Lake Vineyard, which needs the longest hang time to ripen, produces exceptional wines.

Fred Schrader began his life as a vintner with one defining goal in mind, to create benchmark Cabernets from the best vineyards in the Napa Valley. Fifteen years later with seventeen 100-point scores under his belt from the likes of Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate and James Laube, The Wine Spectator, Schrader Cellars continues to define itself as one of the best producers of Cabernet in the history of American wine. Receiving more 100-point scores than any other winery in the history of American wine, 2016 marks a special year in the lifetime of Schrader Cellars.

The story of Schrader Cellars began in 2001 when Fred met Thomas Brown, a little known winemaker who moved to California by way of North Carolina. Thomas took the helm of winemaking for Schrader and he and Fred never looked back. Thomas’ methods of non-interventionist winemaking were a novel idea at the time throughout the valley. He believed in showing the true colors of a vineyard and when working with Beckstoffer To Kalon fruit he had access to nothing short of the best.

After a few years of working together, Fred and Thomas found themselves harvesting the incredibly concentrated fruit of the 2006 vintage. Fred looks back on this time with happiness as the 2006 vintage was the first 100-point scores that a Schrader wine received. The 2007 and 2008 vintages brought with them another pair of 100-point scores for the Schrader CCS and Schrader Old Sparky. This was the first time in the 32-year history of The Wine Advocate that a wine received three consecutive 100-point scores for the same marque and Schrader did this with two of their wines.
