Introduction

• This marks the first meeting of MAP– good progress in evidence on many fronts– pleased to see many new faces here!

• Still many ideas being generated– these must be filtered through L1 leaders

before proceeding– we will be judged by our (focused) progress• “making progress in all directions” will not be

viewed favorably by reviewers or DOE

News (1)

• Management plan sent to DOE in December– after approval by Fermilab Director

Still awaiting DOE response

News (2)

• Budget process is under way…albeit slowly– Statements of Work (SoWs) now prepared by

Directors for each institution• milestones (linked to WBS) specified by L1 leaders

– SG/MZ reviewing now (ready next week)• after our review, SoWs sent to institutional reps (

IB members) for their approval– forms to be signed by MAP Directors and Institutional

Reps• thereafter, SG/MZ will send formal request to DOE

for funding distribution

News (3)

• Proposal status– at review, revised proposal requested

November 30, 2010• updated text was prepared and revised budget

was being developed– final review report specified revised proposal

due date of June 1, 2011• to permit new MAP Director to prepare revisions• in time for next DOE review

– anticipate next review this summer

– all work on proposal stopped at this point

News (4)

• Director search under way– search committee appointed

• Stuart Henderson (chair)• Vladimir Shiltsev• Dan Green• Bob Palmer• Don Hartill

– job description prepared for public distribution• to be released next week

• Not clear recruitment time scale compatible with June 1 proposal deadline– SG/MZ seeking guidance on how to proceed

Challenges Revisited (1)

• Handling 4-MW beam– progress made in resolving target radiation

issue• have initial solution that meets ITER criterion

– study of downstream losses getting under way• under IDS-NF auspices

Challenges Revisited (2)

• Need for high-gradient RF– continuing RF R&D progress at MTA• first beam arrived on February 28

– after a long gestation period

Johnstone, Bross, Torun

Challenges Revisited (3)

• Need for ionization cooling–MICE magnets getting enhanced attention

(Gourlay, Virostek)• increased effort for Spectrometer Solenoids

– we WILL meet our obligations!

–MICE RF cavities all delivered (DeMello, Li, Virostek)

– final cooling with 30 T now looks okay

Challenges Revisited (4)

• MDI/Backgrounds–massively parallel computing (Ryne) offers

hope of fully detailed simulations of beam backgrounds• compared with 1/100 of bunch today

March 4, 2011 Outlook and Guidance - Zisman 14

Goals

• We look forward at Telluride to hearing– finalization of target baseline– approaches to handling energy deposition in

front end– HPRF results with beam– initial tracking results for “VRCS”– initial design for 3 TeV collider ring

Closing Comments

• We must continue to be focused and disciplined in our R&D activities– agreement of cognizant L1 leader on research

activities is a must for MAP-funded work• our success depends on being perceived as a

program that delivers on its promises

• We need to advertise our program– please use MAP logo on slides for all talks– look for opportunities to give talks/seminars on

MAP work• We hope to see you at Telluride– June 27 – July 1, 2011

Kudos

• Welcome to Muons, Inc. as members of MAP

• Thanks to Alex Bogacz and Kevin Beard for organizing meeting– thanks also to L1 leaders who assisted in

planning stimulating agenda

• Thanks to excellent administrative staff for the hospitality we all experienced– Cynthia Lockwood, Stephanie Vermeire, Ruth

Bizot • Next winter meeting at SLAC (date tbd)
