Conner Lancaster, Sudlersville Elementary School Student, Receives Statewide Recognition

Congratulations to Conner Lancaster who was selected as the State of Maryland winner in Bonnie Plants' 3rd Grade Cabbage Program. Conner will receive statewide recognition for growing a 12 pound cabbage plant and receive a $1,000 scholarship. Winning mementos will be presented by Bonnie Plants and the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Conner's third grade teacher was Ms. Deidre Bildstein of Sudlersville Elementary School.

Sudlersville Elementary School Students Enjoy Math Assembly

On January 31st, the students at Sudlersville Elementary School participated in a Magic Math assembly. The presenter, Mark Curry, shared math concepts/skills while demonstrating his magician skills. SES Students Celebrate the 100th Day of School

Second graders at SES celebrated the 100th day of the school year on February 20, 2014. They wrote narratives about themselves when they turn 100 years old. Students used a computer app, OLDIFY, which aged the seven year olds to make them look 100 years old. SWIFTSudlersville Elementary School is one of four schools in Queen Anne's County Public Schools that attends SWIFT (Schoolwide Integrated Framework for Transformation) meetings. The SWIFT Center is out of University of Kansas. Part of the SWIFT implementation includes the school team's examination of their current status and priorities for improvement. Dear PFY Students:Should I say thank you for thinking of me for March 14, Pi Day? It is good to see that we have such math lovers in our Partnering for Youth Program. I understand that some math enthusiasts even go so far as to mark Pi Minute at 1:59, which takes into account the first six digits of the pi: 3:14159. Pi Day is a good excuse to have fun with your principal! If Pi is the circumference of a circle (the distance around the circle) divided by its diameter (the distance across), then I am requesting very small pies when aiming at your target, ME!!!! I am making a rational request regardless of the fact that pi is an irrational number. Since pi goes forever, I will have to put some limits on this activity…five pies in my face only!!!! Pi Day gives us an opportunity to be creative with math and I am honored to be part of it. I am looking forward to seeing you on Pi Day at SES! By the way, my favorite pie is lemon meringue! Sudlersville Elementary School Plans a Financial Literacy DayOn Wednesday, February 20th, 2014, the Financial Literacy team at Sudlersville Elementary including SES educators and administrators, staff from Junior Achievement of Central Maryland and business and community volunteers met to plan the second annual SES JA in a Day scheduled for March 25, 2014. During the JA in a Day event, a cadre of business volunteers from the QAC Chamber of Commerce, SES parent volunteers, and students from the Teacher's Academy at Queen Anne's County High School will take over all the classes at SES. During that day, the volunteers will deliver Junior Achievement's grade-specific hands-on curriculum on financial literacy, infusing the experential curriculum with their real-world knowledge and expertise. Prior to the day, volunteers are trained by Junior Achievement staff and spend time reviewing and preparing their JA materials.

The SES Financial Literacy Team met to plan logistics for the day, focusing on community engagement and outreach. SES was the flagship site for Junior Achievement to partner with Queen Anne's County Public Schools in the 2012-2013 school year. Since that event, Junior Achievement programming has expanded to other elementary schools as well as all four middle schools to meet the state-mandated financial literacy curriculum requirements. Junior Achievement materials are also aligned with the standards used in Maryland.

We will be celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss during the month of March.Fun activities will promote many basic reading concepts. For many children one of the first books that they read independently is a book that was written by Dr. Seuss. If you don't have any Dr. Seuss books at home, contact your child's teacher to borrow a great book.The weather related closures and delays during the past few weeks have been a challenge for scheduling events and getting into the routine of school. Just a reminder that homework is sent home on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please check your child's folder and help him/her complete the homework. Thank you, the Kindergarten Team

Is spring really around the corner? Let's hope so. We just finished Theme 6: Construction Zone. The students enjoyed learning about construction sites, tools, and building things. This month, we will be starting Theme 7: In the City, In the Country. We will be learning the differences between the city and the country. In addition, we are at the end of our Shape Days and are now moving on to Letter Days. We look forward to seeing what interesting things your child will bring into class for the different letters. March is here already? Wow, this year is moving quickly! Happy St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th!

A special thank you to our parents who helped their children complete their cereal box reports for Black History Month. They were fantastic! Look for the next project which will be coming home shortly. Our interns will be in charge of this and they are very excited!

Remember to check your child’s homework folder each night for assignments and important information. Please have your child complete his/her homework and return promptly. As always, keep reading and returning those reading logs! Remember, questions should be answered in complete sentences.

Count on us to continue working super hard this month. Our Literacy Block time seems to be having a positive impact on our students’ reading abilities. We are very proud of their progress! In math we are working on regrouping and representing numbers to 1,000. The students have been working hard on their writing as well. Ask them about it! In social studies the students are learning about American symbols.

We are continuing to "March" our way to success. In math, we are still looking at tens and ones and now we are going to be adding them. We will begin adding 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping. In social studies we are finishing up map skills. Next we will begin a unit called "All About People" in which we will learn about different cultures and how we are alike and different. In science we will be studying the weather. We are also continuing to practice our writing skills. Please help your children remember to use capital letters and punctuation when writing.

The temperature is still variable in and out of our classrooms. Long sleeves and sweaters are encouraged for inside the room. Please bundle up in coats, scarves, etc. for walking in the outside temperatures. Thank you for your continued support. First Grade Team

Marvelous March

Wow what a winter it has been~ we are hoping that spring is right around the corner! March will be a solid month of instruction with only one half day on Friday, the 28th. The MSA Reading test will be administered March 5th and 6th. The Math MSA will be the following week on March 11th and 12th. Please make sure that your child goes to bed early so they will be ready for testing in the morning. Also, if your child does not eat breakfast at school, please make sure they eat at home so they have brain power on those days. In Math, we are wrapping up a unit in Division and will begin the topic of “Fractions” for the next few months. Please continue to practice multiplication/division facts at home with your child as well as read, read, read! Thank you for your continued support and have a magnificent March!

State testing is upon us. The students have worked hard to this point & we are confident they will do well. We are hoping March brings calmer weather and allows us to get the kids outside for recess. Please continue sending jackets with your students. This month we are busy learning fractions, paragraph formation, & civil war. Ask your children about our daily lessons.

Our reading awards for quarter 2 were given out at the recent awards assembly. 170 of our Prek-4th grade students completed their reading goal homework. This is about half of our student population. The children who are reading at home on a regular bases are making the most progress. Like anything else, the more you practice the better you get. Parental support is the key to student success. We appreciate all of your support in helping your child to become a proficient reader. What do successful readers do?1. They get their minds ready and think while they read. They look over a text before they start reading. This is similar to looking at a map before starting on a road trip or looking at a blueprint for a building. 2. They wonder about the things they read. They ask questions in their minds and then try to answer them for themselves and for others. 3. They look deeper into the text to find meaning and understanding. This is a skill our students are working on in class to align with the new Common Core Curriculum. Pennies for Patients SGA is sponsoring the Pennies for Patients collection again March 10-28th. Each week there will be an exciting event to participate in. Last year, SES collected over $2,000.00 for the Pennies for Patients program, run by the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, the worlds largest voluntary health agency dedicated to fighting blood cancers. Please help us to make this year a success as well!

**ATTENTION PARENTS**In Maryland, new immunization requirements will begin this September in the new 2014/2015 school year which will affect students entering Kindergarten and 7th grades. New Requirements for the 2014/2015 school year are as follows:• 2 doses of Varicella vaccine ( chickenpox) to enter Kindergarten•1 dose of Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) to enter 7th grade•1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) to enter 7th grade Please check with your doctor to see if your child has already received these vaccines. Our records may just need to be updated. You may receive these vaccinations from your child’s doctor. Please do not hesitate to take care of this matter because there will be a 20 day cut off once school resumes next year and any child who is not up to date will have an automatic suspension until the requirements are met. What’s Olweus and what does it mean for my child?Olweus is a research based program that is proven to “significantly reduce bullying throughout the school setting.”Some of the Olweus programs highlights include:•A survey to be completed by students in grades 3 and 4 about their bullying experiences.•A “Kickoff activity” to start the program rolling. This will occur on March 7th at 1:45pm in the gym. •Classroom meetings that will occur weekly where students will be learning skills to stop bullying.We need your help as parents to ensure the success of this program. If you would like to be a part of the Olweus team, contact Mrs. Webster and she’ll give you some more info. Save the date for our Career Fair. It’s few months away but please consider spending the day with us on Friday, May 9th. We are asking parent volunteers to spend the day talking to students about their careers.Don’t forget to continue to sign in at the front office whenever you enter the school.

Test StressAs March approaches, there is a noticeable increase in school anxiety, often as a result of the reminders of the impending “test”. While MSA is very important to the success of each student and the school, it is not the only test that matters. Students need only be reminded to try hard and do their best. This is the expectation every day! A good night’s sleep, a good breakfast and a great attitude go a long way toward success on the test. –Mrs. Webster
