Dr. Christine Dargon

Play as a Therapeutic Approach Because they are still developing, children lack some cognitive abilities needed to understand their world and experiences. Children also lack the vocabulary to communicate their emotions and perceptions. This is where play and other non-verbal interventions can be very useful and vital tools. The keynote address will discuss the most prevalent issues we are seeing in our schools and children today, anxiety in particular, and why we are seeing an increase in such issues. It will also present an overview of approaches that are most helpful in school based settings. These approaches will be explored further in the two workshops later in the day.

In the two workshops, attendees will learn how to use play as an incredible method of communication and intervention. One workshop will focus on early interventions with children ages 0 to 5. The other workshop will focus on ages 6-12 and techniques that are not only effective for this age group, but also for older school aged children. Both workshops will teach attendees how to interpret the ways in which children play. Participants will leave with a toolbox filled with ready to use techniques that can be implemented in classrooms and other settings to help children with processing emotional struggles. Tools will include drawings, the use of puppets, role playing, dance/movement, sand trays and many other great techniques. So get ready to learn, have fun and see the world through a child’s eyes!

A1 Creating Successful Students: A Hands-On Workshop for Educators [All]

Concepts like ‘grit’, ‘resilience’ and ‘growth mindset’ are informing how we can create the best possible conditions for student learning. In this hands-on workshop, I will share practical ways to enhance children's learning through daily actions and conversations. For example, what are some 'gritty' questions to ask children at the end of the day? We’ll also look at how simple interventions now could create a foundation for academic success in the future.

Participants will walk away from the workshop with a deeper understanding of the concepts "Grit", "Resilience" & "Growth Mindset" and having practiced some activities and techniques that enhance these concepts in the classroom.

This workshop explores professional development in childcare, reflects on mastering skills and the impact a mindset has on one’s professional goals. Participants will gain insight into management skills, learn strategies for growth and explore what it means to become a next level staff.

Participants will learn to define skills mastery versus completion based learning, explore the impacts of a growth mindset, and gain tips and tricks for career advancement.

P7 Troubleshooting Trio: Flow, Choice and Skills in Child Care Programs [School Age]

Behavioral and logistical roadblocks in child care programs are expectedly pervasive, especially during transitions between activities. Indeed, children are more likely to display undesired behavior when forced to wait or when uncommitted to a task. Instead of focusing on behaviors, this workshop will explore ways to troubleshoot typical child care challenges by using a trio of guiding principles: finding flow, creating choice, and supporting skills development.
