BY THE NUMBERS NOTES

THE SERIES Tulane leads the all-time series with the Bulls 32-22. USF defeated Tulane in the conference tournament last season, 7-6, and took the final game of a three-game series in New Orleans. Prior to that, Tulane had won seven-straight in the series. TWO-LANE ROAD Head coach Billy Mohl will face his alma mater for the first time as lead skipper on Thursday. Mohl was a standout four-year member of the Green Wave baseball team, setting the school single-season and career record for fewest walks-per-nine-inning average with marks of 1.27 (in 2003) and 1.67, respectively. The righty went 9-0 as a senior, becoming just the second regular starter in Tulane history to go undefeated. Mohl was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2003. He was a part of Tulane’s 2005 College World Series team that earned the No. 1 national seed in the tournament. Prior to joining the Bulls, Mohl spent three seasons as an assistant at Tulane.

JD DOES BECAUSE Junior second baseman JD Dutka has been one of the most consistent Bulls in his first season at USF. He's hitting .345 on the year, third on the team. He has 20 runs with eight doubles and 16 RBI. Dutka led USF with a .500 average last week, hitting four doubles and his first career triple. He was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. NO-HIT NIGHTS The Bulls made history on March 16 against Army, as Shane McClanahan and Carson Ragsdale tossed the first combined no-hitter in program history, just the fourth no-no in program history and the first since 2010. McClanahan dazzled over the first 6.0 innings and Ragsdale was dominant in the final three. Collectively, the duo struck out 22 batters, a program record and the second-most in American Athletic Conference history. McClanahan was named The American Pitcher of the Week for a third time last Monday and the two were both named as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week. VILLAR(GE) AND IN CHARGEJunior third baseman David Villar was named the team captain priot to the season, and he has been leading the team on the field as well. He hit a ridiculous .600 Feb. 28-March 4 with nine extra base hits, six doubles, three homers, seven runs and 10 RBI in five games. He had three games with at least three hits, was just a triple shy of the cycle three times, and slugged 1.350. He was named the American Player of the Week on March 5 and is batting .379 with a team-high 13 doubles, four homers and 25 RBI. Villar's 13 doubles are fourth in the country.

JOEY BATSAfter missing nearly two weeks, junior Joe Genord has been on a tear since his return. He hit .500 during USF's 5-0 week March 13-18 with three doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI and a 1.333 slugging percentage. Genord became the first player in USF history to homer in four-straight games and was named the NCBWA National Player of the Week on March 20 as well as The American Player of the Week. Genord hit his fifth homer of the season on Sunday and is batting .324 on the year with 23 RBI. SHANE SHINES Living up to all preseason hype and national buzz, redshirt sophomore left hander Shane McClanahan tossed six scoreless innings against No. 6 UNC on opening night, striking out 11 batters to guide USF to an impressive 4-3 win. McClanahan had gone the first 31.2 innings of the year without allowing an earned run, the longest stretch in program history. He's second nationally with 61 strikeouts, fifth with 15.84 K's per nine innings and is 18th in hits allowed per nine. McClanahan struck out a career-high 15 in the combined no-hitter against Army, two shy of the program record. RUN IT UP The Bulls put up 16 runs in the win at Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 28, the most runs they have scored since Feb. 21, 2014. The 16-1 victory was USF's largest run differential since that same date four years ago, a 19-1 win over Penn State. USF followed with a 13-1 win in game one of the Columbia series. From Feb. 25 - March 2, the Bulls scored a total of 42 runs, the most in a three-game span since 2009. USF leads the American in scoring at 6.8 runs per game.

HIT OF MISERY The Bulls tallied 17 hits in the March 4 win against Columbia, the most they have recorded since 2016. USF has tallied double-digit hits 15 times this season and the 262 hits this year are tops in The American and 16th nationally. USF is 21st in the country with a 0.466 slugging percentage. DOUBLE DUTY USF was pounding opposing pitching with 85 hits and 69 runs over a seven-game stretch from Feb. 24 - March 4. USF leads the nation with 76 doubles on the year and had eight in a 13-6 win against Columbia on March 4, the most it has hit in a game over the last six seasons. Junior Kyle Phillips smashed three doubles in a 13-1 win over the Lions on March 2, becoming the first Bull to do so since 2013.

NOTES THE AMERICAN

TRICK OR DIETRICH Junior catcher Tyler Dietrich was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 26 after leading the Bulls with a .500 average three weeks ago, slugging .714. His average is .308 and he has seven doubles on the year with 14 runs and 23 RBI. ZECHTACULAR Junior Garrett Zech is the fastest player on the Bulls and has showcased that speed so far this season with five doubles and six triples. He's second nationally with his six triples, and the Bulls lead the country with 14 triples this season. COM-PETE Redshirt senior righty Peter Strzelecki was been locked in four starts from MFeb. 24 - March 17. In 24.0 innings pitched, he surrendered 16 hits, four runs, and had 36 strikeouts. He had his best start of the year against Central Michigan, propelling USF to a 6-0 shutout win. He threw 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Strzelecki was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll on March 13. NEW LEADER, SAME CULTURE Billy Mohl joined the USF baseball coaching staff in June of 2014 and was named the program’s seventh head coach on June 30, 2017. Mohl served as the team’s assistant coach from 2015-17 and was the architect behind a pitching staff that reached new heights in each season. After tallying 500+ strikeouts in 2015 and 2016 - the first time that had happened in consecutive seasons in program history - the Bulls set a program record 620 strikeouts in 2017. The team’s 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings led the nation and set a program record. Mohl’s coaching acumen dates back to 2007, when he began as an assistant at his alma mater, Tulane. He then coached at Illinois State for five seasons prior to his arrival in Tampa. Mohl holds a 380-252-2 record as an assistant, has coached on just one team that has won fewer than 32 games and has been to four NCAA Regionals. THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM USF’s consensus top-10 recruiting class from 2015 is now in its junior season. The majority of that class have played together and started since their freshmen campaigns. The Bulls bring back six position starters in their third season playing alongside one another and their closer. The infield remains almost entirely intact, as third baseman David Villar, second baseman/

shortstop Coco Montes and first baseman Joe Genord total a combined 335 games played with 329 starts. Villar has started all 117 games he has appeared in at the hot corner. Montes has started all but one of his 115 games in the middle of the infield and Genord has started 98 games. Villar finished third on the team in 2017 with a .294 average and second with 47 RBI. He showed great plate discipline, walking 41 times to finish second in The American. Montes hit .293 with 13 doubles and 37 runs scored and Genord led the team with nine homers. The whole outfield returns for the Bulls, two of whom were in that top-10 class. Left fielder Chris Chatfield and center fielder Garrett Zech have combined to appear in 218 games with 198 starts between them. Chatfield finished second on the team with eight home runs last year and Zech scored 39 runs, stole 17 bases and did not commit an error.

Catcher Tyler Dietrich appeared in 43 games and started 39 last season, hitting .270 with seven doubles. Closer Andrew Perez had a breakout 2017, posting a 6-3 record with six saves, 52 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA. SHANE OR SHINE Also in that top-10 recruiting class from 2014 is redshirt sophomore lefty Shane McClanahan. After missing 2016 due to injury, the expected ace of this year’s pitching staff will have high expectations following a stellar rookie year. McClanahan led the conference and finished eighth nationally with 12.32 strikeouts per nine innings and also topped league arms with a .181 opponent batting average. The lefty flamethrower struck out at least eight men in nine of his 15 starts and was named a freshman All-American by Perfect Game, Baseball America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. McClanahan was a unanimous preseason all-conference selection and is a preseason All-American. DYNAMITE DUKE Senior outfielder Duke Sunkel Jr. was tremendous in his second full season at USF last year, as he finished second on the team with a .344 average and led the squad with 16 doubles. Stunkel Jr. played the majority of games in right field, but also played in center, left field and at first base. Stunkel Jr. hit all over the lineup, including leadoff toward the end of the season. He went 7-for-11 in the first two games of the Gainesville Regional

with three runs scored, a home run and three RBI. The switch hitter was an all-conference selection in 2017 and was a preseason all-conference choice for the first time heading into 2018. OUT OF YOUR SEAT FOR PETE Redshirt senior right hander Peter Strzelecki was USF’s Sunday starter for most of 2017, his first with the Bulls after missing 2016 due to injury. Strzelecki was lights-out in the second half of the season. He tossed 8.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run with a career-high 10 strikeouts against ECU on May 7, then followed up the outing with a complete-game, two-hit shutout at UConn on May 13.

He finished the season with a 2.42 ERA, second in the American Athletic Conference. The expected Saturday starter was an all-conference pick last year and joined Shane McClanahan and Duke Stunkel Jr. with a preseason all-conference nod. PITCHING PROWESS The USF arms allowed just 7.64 hits per nine innings in 2017 to finish 11th in the country. The team finished 10th in the country with a 3.24 ERA, the fourth-best mark in program history. What aids quality pitching is above average defense, which the Bulls played last year. Collectively, USF committed just 53 errors, the fewest in a single season in program history. WELCOME TO THE BAY The Bulls welcome 13 new faces to this year’s squad with four freshmen and eight transfers. Of the newcomers, 10 hail from Florida and three are from the Bay area. Freshman infielder/pitcher Graham Hoffman, sophomore outfielder and Florida State transfer Ryan Mejia and redshirt freshman catcher Jake Sullivan call Tampa home. Junior infielder Jordan Feist is from Brandon.

In addition to the seven returning juniors, the Bulls add six transfers who are also in their junior seasons. Along with Feist (Pasco-Hernando), the other junior college alums bringing their talents to USF are pitcher Richie Cruz (College of Central Florida), infielder JD Dutka (Florida Southwestern), pitcher Kevin King (St. Petersburg College), outfielder Kyle Phillips (Santa Fe CC), and pitcher/infielder Alec Wisely (Gulf Coast State CC). The Bulls also welcome lefty reliever Connor Eason. The redshirt sophomore and Chesapeake, Va., native spent the 2017 campaign at Seminole State CC. TANGO WITH THE BIG DOGS LIKE DJANGO The Bulls will be contested early and often in 2018. USF will face four teams that are currently ranked heading into the season, three being top-10 opponents. USF hosts a top-10 UNC squad for three games to start the year, then immediately hits the road for a matchup with top-10 Florida State. The Bulls will face defending national champ and preseason No. 1 Florida in May and also take on a ranked Houston team in April. The Bulls defeated then-No. 5 Florida and then-No. 3 Florida State in 2017 on the road, marking the first time since

1989 that USF defeated both schools in the same season. Both wins were on the road, the first time in program history that has happened in the same season. The Bulls defeated four ranked teams in 2017 as part of their 42 wins. USF entered the top-25 for the first time since 2013 and was ranked by Baseball America, D1Baseball and USA Today for three-straight weeks. PRO-SEEDS The Bulls saw five members of the 2017 roster get a chance to play at next level. Shortstop Kevin Merrell and pitchers Phoenix Sanders, Joe Cavallaro and Ryan Valdes were taken in June’s MLB Draft. Pitcher Mark Savarese was signed by the Tigers as an undrafted free agent.

Merrell became the third-highest drafted player in program history when he was selected with the 33rd overall pick by the Oakland Athletics. Sanders was taken in the 10th round by the Tampa Bay Rays, Cavallaro in the 24th round by the New York Mets and Valdes in the 33rd round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Bulls have had at least one player drafted in each year since 2000. In the history of the program, 118 players have been selected in the MLB Draft dating back to 1975. Three players have gone in the first round and a total of eight have been drafted in the first five rounds. BULLS OF THE SUMMER USF was represented well over the summer with seven current members of the roster playing in six different leagues. Juniors Joe Genord and David Villar competed in the prestigious Northwoods League and both had tremendous success. Genord led the Waterloo Bucks with eight homers and hit .263 with 22 runs scored and 22 RBI. Villar hit .312 and mashed a team-high 13 homers with 49 runs scored, 49 RBI and 15 doubles for the La Crosse Loggers. Junior Chris Chatfield played in the Coastal Plains League and finished with 28 runs scored, 30 RBI and a team-best nine home runs for the Forest City Owls.

Sophomore Carson Ragsdale competed in the inaugural season of the Collegiate League of the Palm Beaches. Ragsdale finished with a league-

minutes before first pitch.

PRESS BOX The press box is a work area. Only those with approved credentials are

allowed into the press box. Those working in the press box are expected

to remain professional before, during, or after the game and maintain

a professional atmosphere at all times. There is to be no cheering or

clapping in the press box as well. We appreciate your cooperation.

DOWNLOADABLE VIDEO USF will supply downloadable video of press conferences, media

accesses, post-game interviews and game highlights throughout the

year via a dedicated Dropbox account. Media wishing to utilize these

video elements should contact the USF Communications office to be

added to the distribution list for Dropbox invitation.

INTERNET ACCESS Wireless internet access is available throughout the USF Baseball

Stadium. Use the “USF Guest” network and follow the simple steps to be

connected. It will ask for a phone number or email in order to provide

a password. The access is valid for 24 hours. The wireless connection

works in the arena as well as the media room. Wired connections are

also available in the media room.

INTERVIEW POSSIBILITIES Under no circumstances should media members contact USF coaches

or student-athletes without prior consent and approval from Assistant

Director of Communications Patrick Puzzo. The same policy applies

to the family members of student-athletes. To request interviews

outside of regularly-scheduled availabilities, please contact the USF

Communications department at least 24 hours in advance.

Coach Billy Mohl and selected players are available for interviews during

the week.
