Association Player of the Year Sean
Rash of Montgomery, Ill., defeated
Finnish-American Mika
Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich.,
234-201, to win the Kuwait Open at

The victory was the sixth of

Rash earned $25,000 and denied
Koivuniemi’s bid to add Kuwait to
the list of countries where he has
won titles. A week earlier,
Koivuniemi won the Kingdom of

PBA International Tour event – for the 20th different
country where he has won titles.
Koivuniemi advanced to the title
match with a 238-228 victory over
fellow Finn and defending champi-

eliminated Sweden’s Sandra
Andersson in match two, 279-176.
In the opening stepladder finals
match, Anderson ended Ronnie
Russell’s bid to earn a berth in the
upcoming Barbasol PBA
Tournament of Champions, defeat-
ing the Indianapolis resident, 226-

SEATTLE – The Professional Bowlers Association and CBS
Sports Network have entered into a multi-year television
agreement that features a series of five telecasts originating
from the new GEICO PBA Summer Swing in Milwaukee in
June.
The agreement, announced by PBA CEO Geoff Reiss and
Dan Weinberg, Senior Vice President, Programming, CBS
Sports Network, includes five two-hour telecasts featuring
stepladder finalists from four PBA Summer Swing events, and
concludes with a GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing
special event featuring the top five competition points leaders
from the Summer Swing events.
Summer Swing telecasts debut Tuesday, June 11 (7:00 PM,
ET) on CBS Sports Network and continue for five consecutive
Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, ET.
“We're thrilled at how committed CBS Sports Network is to
the PBA and we're looking forward to their telecasts of the
debut of the Summer Swing,” Reiss said. “The PBA's long-
term success is predicated on developing great partnerships
and we're looking forward to working with everyone at CBS
Sports Network to grow both the PBA and the Network.”
”We’re excited to partner with the PBA and showcase the
world’s best bowlers,” Weinberg said. “The PBA has a storied
history and an established fan base and we’re pleased to add it
to our extensive lineup of event programming.”
The GEICO PBA Summer Swing is a new series of PBA
Tour events which will be contested on three new “animal pat-
tern” lane conditions that will debut in Milwaukee. The quali-
fying segments of the PBA Badger Open, PBA Wolf Open and
PBA Bear Open will be hosted by three different Milwaukee
area bowling centers (AMF Waukesha, AMF West and AMF
Bowlero) between May 19-30. The cumulative pinfall totals
from the three animal pattern events will qualify players for the
Milwaukee Open, the fourth event in the series, and the
GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing will feature the top
five points leaders based on the four previous events.
The Badger Open finals will air on June 11, the Wolf Open
on June 18, the Bear Open on June 25, the Milwaukee Open
on July 2 and the GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing on
July 9. All will be two-hour, five-player stepladder finals.
CBS Sports Network, the 24-hour home of CBS Sports, is
available to 100 million homes nationwide through local cable,
video and telco providers including Verizon FiOS (Channel
94) and AT&T U-Verse (Channel 643, 1643 in HD) and via
satellite on DirecTV (Channel 613) and Dish Network
(Channel 158).

2 SPORTS REPORTER March 27 - April 2, 2013
Everyone gets to play.
That should be the theme put
forth over and over again when-
ever discussions of the merits of
youth bowling enters any con-
versation.
It is one of bowling's greatest
assets and advantage over other
sports.
Talk shows devote hours to
the subject of how to come up
with ways to guarantee that
every youngster gets to play.
There are all kinds of special
rules in youth baseball, football,
basketball, soccer and other
sports aimed at solving the
problem.
In some baseball and softball
leagues up to 15 kids are
allowed to come to bat whether
they are in the lineup or not. In
various youth sports there are
mandates that insure that every
kid gets his playing minute min-
imum. Getting to play is the
problem for the young players,
their parents, the coaches, and
the sports. It also has been
proposed in some areas that no
score be kept, and the end of
winning and losing.
How silly can you get? In
sports and in life there are win-
ners and losers, and win or lose,
there is learning.
Many sports have invested
millions into developing interest
in their sport among young-
sters. That isn't meant simply to
create future stars but also to
create players and fans.
Bowling is woefully weak in
the spending department and
too many junior programs and
school organization from pre-
school through college suffer.
Bowling can be expensive for
youngsters and their families.
Young bowlers should not be
viewed merely as a possible
source of current income, but as
the lifeblood of the sport in
pumping new life forever and
ever. And it is vital for every
organization in bowling to fully
recognize that fact of bowling
life.
Bowling's biggest plus with
youngsters is that everyone gets
to play, not in a forced way, but
in a full participatory status.
Junior bowlers can be classed
according to average. Leagues
can have two, three or more on
a team, and there is always
room for one more. And they all
get to play. And they all get to
know how they did as individu-
als or as team members.
Boys learn early that girls can
bowl well too, and they don't
feel nearly as bad as their elders
or their counterparts in other
sports when they get bowled
over by a female. Another plus
for youth bowling is that boys
and girls get to know each other
better in various competitive as
well as social situations.
Parents almost dread going to
a sporting contest when their
children are border players,
good enough to play, but not
good enough to be a sure thing.
Parents of young league bowlers
know their youngsters will be in
action, no matter how well they
shoot, and parents know the
kids will be in a classified situa-
tion that is either competitive or
is aided by a handicap proce-
dure that makes for some sem-
blance of equality, regardless of
ability.
Bowling is fortunate that it is
a sport that can handle differ-
ences in age, size or ability in
probably the fairest manner of
any sport. But bowling should
be shouting from the rooftops to
youngsters and parents and
adults and educators that this is
the rarest of sports, the sport
everyone gets to play in a mean-
ingful way.
Those kids who start bowling
at two or three years of age with
bumper bowling, can still be
bowling decades, and even a
century later, and the same will
apply, everyone gets to play.

Colette Malyack 300 In Youth TravelersBy Vince Albrecht
MONTVALE, NJ - Since she’s
carrying a Stan Niemiec Youth
Traveling League 207 average,
FDU freshman Colette Malyack
can hardly be tagged as a one-
house bowler. Opening week, the
former DePaul Catholic star
blitzed Oakland’s Holiday Bowl
with a perfect game. Now, four
months later, she repeated her per-
fecto, this time by victimizing
Montvale’s plastic sticks. Without
digging into archival records, I’d
guess this is the first time in
SNYTL history that a bowler, boy
or girl, has ever posted two “300”
scores in the same season; that’s
an absolutely awesome accom-
plishment by Miss Malyack. One
would think with her 682 set and
Joe Malyack’s 234: 616, that the
Holiday II squad would fare well
in their match with Montvale, but
the latter squashed such thoughts
with a three-game sweep, powered
by Katie Didonato’s season best
214: 594, newcomer Mahwah
freshman Chris Salerno’s 245: 597
and Kyle Ladewig’s 194.
In other contests, front-runner
Bowler City I thundered past
shorthanded Bowler City IV with
a strong net 843: 2332, fueled by
above-average efforts from the
entire quartet. Ryan Perez paced
the assault with 210-236: 632 with
ample support from Vinny Santoro
222: 585, Matt Trento 199-196
and Eric Grabusnik 194-189.
Scoring well for BC IV was Greg
Khan 210: 564.
Holiday I strengthened its hold
on second place by coming back
from an opening game loss to
take five points from Boonton.
The sizzling Holiday quartet
blazed its way to a scorching 899:
2462 net, firing seven deuces and
a pair of “ 190” games
along the path. Frank Magyar was
tops for Holiday with 192-215-
236: 644 followed by Brian Rizzi
210-223-195: 628, Anastasia
DeLeon 203-223: 599 and Nick
Cilento 245: 591. Rolling well
over their average, Boonton subs’
Eric Kattermann 201-213: 594 and
Rose Feiwel +63 [161: 438] were
instrumental in keeping their team
competitive against torrid
Holiday.
After dropping two close games
to Bowler City III, Fair Lawn
struck for a huge 942-873 finale to
earn three points, 2584-2543.
Sparking Fair Lawn’s comeback
were Hassan Izzard 205 and Tyler
Nappi 204. Bergenfield freshman
Nick Reyes led BC III’s scoring
with 190: 550 while 10-year-old
teammate Louis Ferrante chipped
in with 158-162. Closing out
league play, Bowler City II strug-
gled big-time, managing only one
point against the vacancy. Best
scores were James Kane 191-198,
Kyle Schellberg 187-190 and
Justin Garcia 190-181.
In a terrific, high-scoring battle
between two evenly matched
quartets, Holiday outgunned
Bowler City II, 2804-2739 behind
Brian Rizzi 243-202-246: 691.
Closing with scratch games of
879-846, Holiday was firing on all
cylinders as anchor Rizzi was
aided by teammates’ Frank
Magyar 220-203: 601, Graham
Mulligan 224-203 and Dillon
Cilento 228-194. The BC II four-
some scored big as well, although
their 831 net in the exciting finale
fell fifteen pins shy of Holiday.
JonMikal Sepero continued his
exceptional outings, raising his
average to 192 with 203-202-222:
627, Kyle Schellberg posted 218-
211: 618, Welmer Paguay 226 and
James Kane

WAYNE, NJ - In a clash between North 1-B Group
IV’s best teams, Passaic Tech outgunned state-
ranked St Peter’s Prep, 3005-2951 at T-Bowl in
Wayne to capture the title and advance to the State
Tournament at Carolier. Despite the fine numbers
posted by the two squads, it seemed to come down to
a shootout between the anchors, PCTI sensational
freshman lefty Isiah Tolbert and St Peter’s senior
Will Blanco. Tolbert fired games of 247-243-279:
769 while Blanco struck back with 232-252-255:
739. In addition to the top two teams in each of the
four groups qualifying for the trip to Carolier Lanes
in North Brunswick, nine individuals advanced as
well.
The other 1-B team qualifiers: Group I - Pompton

Over at Bowler City in Hackensack, there were
few surprises as the anticipated victors came through
with flying colors. State-ranked sixth, Glen Rock
added the Group II section title to its Bergen County
crown by bombarding the maples with the second-
best section total in the state, firing games of 1128-
