Vivir como hijos de la Luz

Live as children of Light

Writing this note on the first day of Spring is quite a coincidence but timely since this weekend

the liturgy talks mainly about Christ, the light.

The Vernal equinox marks the lengthening of daylight. That means, in the next few months,

we will see more daylight, and as there are more daylight, there is more warmth and more

green plants and blooms too.

When the days are longer, people have more enthusiasm, vigor and strength. They spend more

time outside, in the fields, in the park, in the beach for both work and fun. The longer daylight

allows all human activities to happen and people love it. Despite the excessive spending of

resources, very seldom you can hear qualms about it because definitely these times of the year

are the most exciting!

Fortunate are those who patiently wait for the changing seasons because they witness a

mystery that unfolds in the happening of the times, a manifestation of God’s greatness. There

is that unexplained magnificence that occurs in the changing of the seasons. Unexplained because, even if there is a

scientific explanation to the changing of times, each seasonal occurrence is unique. And observing this uniqueness, one

cannot help to stand in awe before the magnificent work of the One who controls the seasons.

To stand in awe before the unfathomable work of God must be our attitude. More than the vigor spent in appre-

ciation to the daylight that has lengthened is the vigor spent in adoration to the One who is the source of that light. That

means, we are all reminded to praise and bless the Lord through Jesus Christ, who is the light.

To see through the light, who is Jesus, is exactly what we are invited to do this Lenten Season. When we enjoy

the light of day, we must see Jesus. We must see in the clear of day the way by which we are invited to live our Christian

calling: to profess Christ and to live especially for Christ and to be like Christ for the sake of the building up of the

Kingdom of God. All of these are basically founded on renewal. The metaphor is to stay in the light. To stay with Jesus,

who is the Truth.

Anointed. Or the chosen one. Anointing is a very old custom. It is antiquated but not lost. Where old customs

are still preserved, anointing remains a rich practice of naming one who is chosen. At least on the Pacific Islands, the

custom of anointing the village chief is still alive. I personally have witnessed a consecration of a village chief. It was a

very elaborate ceremony but the focal point was the anointing. Imagine Simba being anointed as the legitimate successor

of King Mufasa. Various herbs and nuts were concocted to make the oil that was used to anoint the new village chief.

The anointing signifies that the chosen one is separate from the others.

Catholics have retained this custom of anointing. In the sacraments of initiation (i.e., baptism, confirmation and

ordination) the chosen ones are anointed with the oil of Chrism. This anointing is a sharing with the life of Christ. Since

we are conformed to the life of Christ, we are made like him, at least in the anointing, but more so, in the receiving of the

Holy Spirit that pours the life of Christ in us.

This Easter Vigil, our elect (meaning chosen) will be anointed with the Oil of Chrism. Like Christ, they are

anointed and are made separate from others. They are separate from others because they become God’s sons and

daughters. As sons and daughters of God, they commit their lives to follow Christ and be like him. The anointing they

received at initiation will allow them to strive to become like Christ.

Escribir esta nota el primer día de la primavera es una coincidencia pero oportuna ya que este fin de semana la

liturgia habla principalmente de Cristo, la luz.

El equinoccio de Vernal marca el alargamiento de la luz del día. Eso significa que, en los próximos meses,

veremos más la luz del día, y como hay más luz del día, hace más calor y más plantas verdes y también florecen las

flores.

Cuando los días son más largos, la gente tiene más entusiasmo, vigor y fuerza. Pasan más tiempo fuera, en los

campos, en el parque, en la playa para ambos el trabajo y la diversión. La mayor luz del día permite que todas las activi-

dades humanas y a la gente le encanta. A pesar del gasto excesivo de recursos, muy rara vez se puede oír remordimientos

sobre ella, porque definitivamente estas épocas del año son las más emocionantes!

Afortunados son los que esperan pacientemente por las estaciones cambiantes porque son testigos de un misterio

que se despliega en el acontecimiento de los tiempos, una manifestación de la grandeza de Dios. Hay esa magnificencia

inexplicable que ocurre en el cambio de las estaciones. Inexplicado porque, incluso si hay una explicación científica al

cambio de las estaciones del año, cada ocurrencia estacional es única. Y observando esta singularidad, uno no puede

dejar de asombrar ante la magnífica obra de Aquel que controla las estaciones.

Estar en asombro ante la insondable obra de Dios debe ser nuestra actitud. Más que el vigor gastado en la

apreciación de la luz del día que se ha alargado es el vigor gastado en la adoración de Aquel que es la fuente de esa luz.

Esto significa que todos se nos recuerda a bendecir y alabar al Señor a través de Jesucristo, quien es la luz.

Ver a través de la luz, quién es Jesús, es exactamente lo que nos invita a hacer esta Temporada Cuaresmal.

Cuando disfrutamos de la luz del día, debemos ver a Jesús. Debemos ver en el día a día el camino por el cual estamos

invitados a vivir nuestra vocación cristiana: profesar a Cristo y vivir especialmente para Cristo y ser como Cristo por la

edificación del Reino de Dios. Todo esto se basa básicamente en la renovación. La metáfora es permanecer en la luz.

Permanecer con Jesús, quien es la Verdad.

Ungido o elegido. La unción es costumbre muy antigua. Es anticuado pero no perdido. Donde se siguen conservando

las antiguas costumbres, la unción sigue siendo una rica práctica de nombrar a uno que es elegido. Al menos en las islas

del Pacífico, la costumbre de ungir al jefe del pueblo sigue viva. Personalmente he presenciado la consagración de un

jefe de aldea. Fue una ceremonia muy elaborada, pero el punto principal fue la unción. Imagina a Simba el cual fue

ungido como el sucesor legítimo del rey Mufasa. Varias hierbas y nueces fueron preparadas para hacer el aceite que se

usó para ungir al nuevo jefe de la aldea. La unción significa que el elegido está separado de los otros.

Los católicos han conservado la costumbre de ungir. En los sacramentos de iniciación (es decir, el Bautismo, la

Confirmación y la Ordenación) los elegidos son ungidos con el aceite del Crisma. Esta unción es compartir la vida de

Cristo. Puesto que estamos conformados a la vida de Cristo, estamos hechos como él, al menos en la unción, pero más

aún, en la recepción del Espíritu Santo que derrama la vida de Cristo en nosotros.

Esta Vigilia Pascual, nuestros escogidos (es decir, elegidos) serán ungidos con el Aceite del Crisma. Como

Cristo, están ungidos y separados de los demás. Están separados de los demás porque se convierten en hijos e hijas de

Dios. Como hijos e hijas de Dios, encomiendan sus vidas para seguir a Cristo y ser como él. La unción que recibieron en

la iniciación les permitirá esforzarse por llegar a ser como Cristo.

Lenten Reflection through Music - The Seven Last Words

Join us Wednesday of Holy week (4/12) at 6:30pm for The Seven Last Words.

There will be a short description of one of the last things Jesus said while on the cross,

music or a song, a prayer, then a candle will be carried to the altar.

This will be done for each of the Seven Last Words.

Little Suppers & Stations of the Cross

Please join us Fridays during Lent for a light supper at 6pm followed by the Stations of the Cross at 7pm. These will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus (3/3 & 10), the parish (3/17), the Catholic Daughters of America (3/24)and the Hispanic Ministry (3/31 & 4/7). If you would like to do the Stations between 9am-4pm on Fridays, you are welcome to enter through the chapel door. There will be booklets you can borrow to guide you around the Stations. Please return the book-let as you leave so the next person can use it. There will be a few copies so more than one person can go around at the same time, but all at their own pace.

Extended Confession Schedule Tuesday - Friday

9am - 4pm

During Lent, we are offering an extended schedule for confessions. Just like Wednesdays during regular times, the chapel door will be open for you to come in. Look for the sign over the phone on the counter to the right. It will either direct you to: * call the office, if no priest is already there. You will then pick up the phone which connects you directly to the office. Tell them you are asking for confession and then have a seat. We will send a priest over as soon as possible.

Or * to have a seat and wait if the priest is already there. When the priest is done with whomever was there ahead of you, he will come back through the chapel entry to see if anyone else is waiting. You will then follow him into the confessional. There will be confession guidelines available in the chapel area for your use.

Prayer Group

St Mary’s Women’s Prayer Group invites you to join us as we travel the Road to Emmaus and there encoun-ter Jesus who invites us to a deeper relationship with Him. This five week, small group session will focus on what it is to become a joyful disciple and missionary of Jesus Christ. The sessions began Wednes-day, March 8, @ 6:30 pm and continue weekly through April 3rd. They take place in the St. John XXIII room, upstairs straight across from the stairwell. Saying the Rosary

We recite the rosary in the chapel every morning before daily mass except on Wednesday

when we do it after mass. The rosary begins at 8:00 am and the daily mass at 8:30.

We also recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy after every daily mass. All are welcome.

It’s almost time for the Easter Egg Hunt! If you are able to donate small unopened store-bought wrapped candies, we would greatly appreciate it. Bring them to the office T-F 9am-Noon or 1-4pm, OR bring them to mass and put them in the box in the foyer with the bunny on it. Thank you!

Gathering Space Closed 4/22-23

No Coffee and Doughnuts

The Gathering Space will be closed off the weekend of April 22-23 for Confirmation

activities. Please join us for Confirmation Mass at 5pm and stay for the celebration

afterwards.

Rice Bowl photography shoot with a group of women from Ejido Hidalgo, a village near

Matehuala, Mexico. They have created a cactus business with the help of Respuesta Alternative and a

student group from University of Mexico, Vera Cruez. The students have made a sale to Walmart for

Mother’s Day and the women are preparing the cacti for this sale.

Maria de lu Luz Lego Martinez runs a household without a husband, who went to the US. Of

her 10 children, four have died, two live in the United States, and the other four live nearby. Maria, 2,

and Allison, (right), also live in the same compound with their grandmother.

“CALLED TO GREATNESS” VOCATIONS RETREAT

Did you know that God made you for a specific vocation? Part of growing into adulthood is to come to under-

stand who we are as beloved sons and daughters of God. Called to Greatness is a discernment retreat for

HS youth who are courageous enough to ask the question: Lord, how are you calling me to greatness? All

four vocations the Church holds up for us will be explored: priesthood, married life, religious life and single

life. Come and see how God is calling you!

When: April 21-22, 2017

Where: Father Bernard Youth Center, Mt. Angel

Time: Begins 7:00 pm Fri – Concludes 7:00 pm Sat

Cost: $65 (checks payable to St. Mary’s in advance)

Permission form and registration fee are due by Friday, April 7th to the Parish Office, Attn: Cherrie.
