Whether you are just passing through the area or looking for a spiritual home, we welcome you to St. William Catholic Church. We hope you find our

worship environment hospitable and prayerful.

People often attend Mass at a parish for months or years without officially registering. Registration here at Saint William is an expression of your commitment to being an active member of our community. Parish registration also simplifies the process with regard to religious education; sponsoring a sacramental candidate; and for the planning and preparation of baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

Registration is easy and can be completed at the Parish Office during regular office hours. Registration forms are also available in the Gift Shop in the narthex of the Church and on our website.

NEW MEMBERS

Baptisms are scheduled on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. Please call the Parish Office 2614883 to make an appointment for family preparation and instruction. Diocesan regulations require two continuous years of religious instruction before receiving the Sacraments of First Communion in Second Grade and the Sacrament of Confirmation in Tenth Grade. For more information on the St. William Sacrament Preparation contact Mary Jane Spirk @ 2392635429.

The Sacrament of Matrimony requires six (6) months of preparation. To celebrate your wedding at St. William, the bride and/or groom, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least six months standing. Please contact Karin Daniels at 7767896 for scheduling information.

Eucharistic Ministers are available to bring Holy Communion to our homebound. Please call Rosanne at 2392620338 to make arrangements.

If you are admitted to a care facility and would like to receive Communion, contact the facility staff for the time of their weekly Communion Service.

REGULATIONS ON FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 years and 59 years (inclusive). On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older on all Fridays of Lent NOTE: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition.

FASTING, ALMSGIVING AND PRAYER are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Stewardship in Our Faith Community

Our parish has been using an Online Giving system that is strengthening stewardship as well as making it easier for members to support our parish. There are many benefits for the parish

and for parishioners that choose to give online. Some of the benefits for the parishioner include: no need to write checks; you can give even if you are unable to attend services; and your contribution amount can easily be adjusted at any time.

Please prayerfully consider making a onetime or recurring offering online to our parish. Your contribution will support the operation of the church and all of our different ministries. Signup today by visiting saintwilliam.weshareonline.org or scan the QR Code with your smart phone to make a contribution.

“Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." Luke 6:38

Good News and Bad News: Good news first. The new stained glass window to go into the west apse of our church is very nearcompletion and it is looking beautiful. The bad news: it will not be installed by Easter. Our new time for installation is by May 20th (Pentecost Sunday). The good news is that Pentecost is a time of celebration of the Holy Spirit, who enhances, enlightens and enlivens our faith. Thus, a good time to

bring on the addition to our church. The bad news is that many of you will have returned north and will not be here to enjoy and celebrate the moment. Please be sure to check the website. We will update you as we get closer to Pentecost. For now, may your Holy Week be a time for profound entering into the Passion of Christ, culminating in an Easter celebration of light, life and love.

  Project 750 update:

It has been a little while and we know many of you are wondering what is going on. Well, sit back and we will talk about it. We will start from where we were last spring. We had a concept and a model, but when we started moving toward making the concept a reality

we ran into problems, rather considerable ones. There would never have been enough park-ing on the lot to handle the people capacity of the building. Also, by the time we would have built the building we would not have had nearly enough money left over in our budget to out-fit the building for use. Lastly, there were major variances in the existing codes that would have been necessary to build the building we had in mind. (Remember we are building in the City of Naples this time and subject to its codes and regulations.) So, we decided it was best to go back and come up with a new concept. We amicably parted ways with our Concept Ar-chitect at that time, Mr. Eugene Aubry, and made Dan Summers of BSSW Architects, a Na-ples firm, our only architect. Dan has designed many beautiful and very useful buildings in our area and knows the workings of the Naples city building departments and its codes. We have also been putting together the team we want to build our building: Tom Abraham (the General Contractor on the building of our Church) with jFg, as Construction Manager; Buck Ward with Spectrum Engineering, as Civil Engineer; Jim Banks with jmb transportation en-gineering, inc., as transportation engineer; Mike Behrndt with Enviro Design, as Landscape Architect. All of whom helped to build our present church. At this time the team will also in-cludes John Passidomo with Cheffy Passidomo, Attorneys at Law, as our land use and zon-ing attorney for the project. Along with our parish committee and Bo Nepip, the Director of our diocesan Building Department OK, that’s, our team so far. As we add to it we will let you know. So, what are we working on? We are entering a conditional use process with the City of Naples. The oldest of our involved buildings was constructed in 1963. There have been quite a few changes in codes and regulations governing construction and land use since then. The purpose of the conditional use process is to obtain a conditional use permit. A conditional usepermitis designed to allow flexibility within the zoning laws. We are developing the de-sign with which we will start the process. This process could take as long as one year or be as short as another six months. We hope for the latter. We will keep all our parishioners up-dated as the process goes forth. We doubt it will be the thrill ride of the century; but it will be interesting to see the design develop and our aspirations for a new “administry” building (administration and ministry) begin to take form; and the path for its being constructed made clear. We need everyone’s support in many ways. Your interest, your concern, your prayers and best wishes, and eventually your contribution of resources are all important to this pro-ject. Please help with them all. If you have questions or concerns, please email Mike at [email protected] . Watch for future updates here in the bulletin and on our web site and Facebook page.

Thank you and stay tuned.

Easter Sunday April 1, 2018 Reflections on Scripture Jack Conroy, Ph.D. I. Acts of the Apostles, 10:34a, 3743 Peter's Speech

Reflection: St. Luke puts this speech in St. Peter's mouth while the latter was in the house of Cornelius, a Roman Centurion and a Gentile. It is in important witness to the earliest Christian proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Verses immediately prior to these announced that "God shows no partiality," which meant that Gentile believers in Jesus did not have to follow the Mosaic Law. But we can see two parts of the reading: First, we hear what Jesus did in his ministry, that he was anointed by God with the Holy Sprit, that he did good, healing those who had fallen in the power of demons. We then hear of his death and resurrection, which we celebrate at Easter. The Second part is that which affirms the witnesses to these facts. And the affirmation that they had "eaten and drunk with him" after the resurrection is designed to assure the hearers that this was no "ghostly" apparition, but that the resurrection was real and incontroverti-ble. Finally, we read of Jesus' function, that he was to be "judge" every-one, alive or dead, and that it was to this person that the Prophets referred. This latter is a favorite Lucan theme, but it was also a central theme of the early Church. Notice the centrality of the "Resurrection." It was the crowning evidence of who Jesus was for St. Luke. As "Miracles" af-firmed that God was on Jesus' side, the Resurrection was the final valida-tion that He was the One who was to Come.

II. I Corinthians 5:6b8. A Different Perspective on 'Yeast.'

Reflection: We usually think of "yeast" as that good stuff that makes bread rise. Well, St. Paul used "yeast" as a different symbol. First, every-one who has made bread knows that a little yeast (after kneading) perme-ates the entire loaf of bread. You can't have one part with yeast and one part without. Second, at the Paschal Feast (Pesach in Hebrew) each housewife was to clear out all yeast from her house. The entire family was to eat unleavened bread for a full week, beginning with Pesach. The symbolism of unleavened bread brought the Jews back to that time when they were wanderers in the Sinai, but in the presence of God. Hence, "leavened" bread symbolized the "Settled, Comfortable" life; unleavened bread symbolized the pilgrim life of the Israelites, where there was no time to permit bread to "rise." So St. Paul uses this emotionallyloaded symbolism to refer to the "purity" of an "unleavened soul," one free of malice and wickedness, parallel to the purer unleavened bread eaten at the Passover. Recall, Christ is our Paschal Lamb, and we should respond in a manner similar to the ritual established by Moses.

III. John 20:19. The Empty Tomb.

Reflection: St. John's story of the discovery of the Empty Tomb stresses several important elements: First, consistent with the Synoptic accounts, it is Mary of Magdala that first discovered that Jesus had arisen from the dead. Here she brings the news to Peter, who, with the "beloved disciple" ran to the tomb. Second, it is Peter who first looks in; the younger "other disciple" accedes to Peter's social place among the disciples. Finally, the younger "saw and believed." St. John will later say that he wrote his Gos-pel so that others who have not seen might believe. This "seeing and be-lieving" is less powerful than "notseeing and believing." This latter state was the state of the Evangelist's community...and is the state of our com-munity. Thus, St. John would actually place our faith on a higher level than those of Peter and the Beloved Disciple. Interesting concept....
