Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Lawrence,
Last week, those who are preparing to enter the church –
those to be baptized and those who already united with us in
baptism, will make a full profession of faith, be confirmed and
receive the Eucharist, were presented to the Bishop in Lafayette.
Those to be baptized are now called “The Elect” which means
“chosen one.”
For the next three weeks, we will celebrate the “scrutinies”
which means to examine our lives for the hold sin may have
over us, pray for healing and strength to overcome sin and resist
temptation. The Rite of Sending is followed by a prayer of
exorcism – a prayer to release one from the power of sin in
order to enter into a more intimate relationship with Christ and
His Church. As a member of the Body of Christ, not only do we
pray for ourselves but the whole community of faith, especially
the one(s) to be baptized.
Those already baptized are encouraged to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation that we might be freed from that
which diminishes our life in Christ or has killed it by serious sin.
Let us take a brief look at sin--
At the grade school level, we might have only looked at sin
as violating a rule or one of the 10 Commandments, but at that
age were rarely aware of the damage of sin – both to the one
who was sinned against and the one who sinned. Sin does us
harm and harms others around us.
For the most part, sin is often centered in selfishness – “I
want what I want when I want it” – the concern or impact on
others is not recognized or just ignored – as “I” become the
center of the universe and only “I” matter. It truly is all about
“me.” The story of Adam and Eve is very good to understand
how sin works – Eve knew what God had said, but the “fruit of
the tree” looked inviting and something good – “you will be like
God and know Good and Evil” – and you will not die – it won’t
harm you -- which will be discovered to be a lie. We eat the
fruit – what was forbidden. Sin seems to give us freedom – to
do what we want and ignore the “rules” which are sent to
control or stand in our way of something we want. But the sin
becomes a trap and often “they discovered that they were naked
and hid.” This expresses the effect of sin – the creator of a false
self and fear of God. Strange that we humans fear our Creator
and Maker, rather than the sin that harms us.
The deeper we enter into sin, the more we enter darkness as
we justify ourselves, minimize the harm done to others – and the
darkness results from growing more and more distant from God
– Jesus who is the light of the world. The more that we are
aware of our sinfulness or sinful choices the closer we are
moving toward God. To believe that we are without sin
indicates how great the darkness is. It is always God who calls
us to awareness, for God wants to free and heal us as God
desires intimacy with us.
The opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation is
available on Saturdays from 2:00-4:00pm during Lent, but our
parish communal celebration is on April 10 at 2:30 p.m. and
6:30 p.m. Everyone has anxiety about this sacrament, but it is
one of the most “soul-refreshing” experiences you can have if
you haven’t gone in a while – 5 years, 10 years, 40 or 50 years.
Give yourself a gift – to unburden your heart and feel a renewal
and cleansing within. Don’t let fear enslave you.
What we learn over time is that God is truly on our side –
and it is sin that harms us as the song says, “don’t let fear keep
us apart.” God Bless, Fr. Dave

Holy Father’s Prayer Intention for March
Dear God, During this season of Lent, we pray for
Christian communities throughout the world, especially
those who are persecuted. May they feel that they are
close to Christ and may their rights be respected. We
also lift up to you, all doctors and their humanitarian
collaborators in war zones, who risk their lives to save
the lives of others. Be close to them, dear Lord.

PARISH MINISTRIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ADULT FAITH FORMATION COLUMN (Sue Wilhelm)
Maya Reynon will be leading the children’s liturgy of
the Word. If you are in high school or a college student
and would like to assist with this ministry, please let Sue
or Kelsi know. We could use a few more hands.
I am a member of the Household of God. God is head
of my household.
Last Sunday a group of us travelled to Lafayette to the
Cathedral of St. Mary so that our catechumen and
candidates who will be welcomed into the Church at the
Easter Vigil could be received by the Bishop. It was a
beautiful service and reaffirmed that we are part of the
larger Body of Christ. The Church we belong to is larger
than St. Lawrence.
The long drive reminded me that we are on a pilgrimage
throughout the whole of our life. And along the way we
travel with one another, we hear each other’s stories, we
break bread together. Sometimes we hit bumps on the
road, and at other times we dance for joy—and all this in
community. This week, each day, notice and be grateful
for one thing that reminds you that you are part of this
larger community, the Body of Christ. That we give and
receive Christ in one another. And this indeed is Church.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist: Please
remember to fill out the form we sent as we begin to
expand the ministry to our homebound parishioners.
Training will be April 2nd
at 1:00 pm or 6:30pm at St.
Agnes. Please drop your questionnaire in the collection.
Thank you!

Christ" by Richard Grill. The recital will include
musical numbers by the St. Lawrence Choir.
Sunday, April 7 | 6:00 PM Join us for a dramatization of the Last Supper
presented by men of the parish and the St. Lawrence
Choir. In this living dramatization, the Twelve
Apostles speak their minds to themselves, to each
other and to the Lord in the light of the words that
they have just heard Jesus speak: “One of you will
betray Me.” The play focuses on just a few seconds
in time at the Last Supper when Jesus announced
that someone would betray him that night. After
each shocking pronouncement, each apostle in turn
relives his history with Jesus, reviews his faith and
agonizes that he may be the traitor.
“They Said It!”
What is the best thing about going to school
at Saint Lawrence?
“I like how we all go on field trips and
learning differnet stuff even though I have
trouble some times. I like Spelling Soup and
how I get to see friends and have gym.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping
off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called
Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn’t miss the
meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God
requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated.
If you’ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand,
or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how
sensitive feet can be.
Within the Church, there are religious orders with a
custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty,
but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with
creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is
doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a
once-in-a-lifetime possibility, penitents often went
barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their
conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice
of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the
cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of
our newly-scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to
walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
MID-LENT CHECK-IN
God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the
Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The LORD, the God of
your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would
later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living,
and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this
midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our
repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our
reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance
involves working to secure justice for all and helping our
neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other
and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener
of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that
he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will
bear fruit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
