A check of the Mediabase Current/Reccurrent/Gold percentage for a number of CC’s Country outlets shows a decided increase in the current percentages when compared to last fall’s current music mixes. I hasten to add that, despite popular belief, there has not been a current-music stranglehold across CC Country outlets. While some current percentages dropped into the teens, many have boasted current percentages north of 30%, including (Oct. 2006 percentages) KYKR/Beaumont, TX (36%), WUSY/Chattanooga (35%), WBCT/Grand Rapids (32%), WBUL/Lexington (31%), WAMZ/Louisville (35%), WMIL/ Milwaukee (35%), KEEY/Minneapolis (38%), WSIX/ Nashville (30%), WLLR/Quad Cities (41%), and KSD-FM/ St. Louis (34%). Nevertheless, there has been some movement at some of CC’s lower current-percentage Country outlets. Labels, MySpace To Challenge iTunes Sony BMG and Warner Music Group are close to inking a music distribution deal with MySpace, according to the New York Post. The new MySpace Music is expected to offer a combination of pay-per-download and ad-supported music and video content. SBMG and WMG are expected to receive a joint venture stake in the service.

Amazon Partners With Radio With non-traditional revenue as one bright spot for radio (+17% in February, says the RAB), it’s no wonder Country broadcasters are forging affiliate deals with online music

retailers to earn commissions. Amazon.com Managing Editor/Music Lucas Hilbert’s recent appearance at the

Albright & O’Malley pre-CRS seminar in Nashville underscored the level of online activity that Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and others are generating. Amazon’s Associates program gives Country partner stations up to 10% rev share on CDs, downloads and other products purchased by listeners. For details, email [email protected] or click here.

Stations Offered Mobile Weather Content and technology companies Radio2dot0 and Gotvoice have launched a news and weather alert service for mobile phones that directs subscribers to affiliated radio stations’ broadcast and online weather reports. Stations also receive a portion of the $1.79 month subscription fee. Details at www.onmycell.info.

Industry News MCA Southwest Rep EJ Bernas will lead his 4th Annual Springtime Stroll in Nashville on March 28 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A silent auction is planned, and donations can be sent to Bernas at 401 Commerce St., #1100, Nashville, 37219. Bill Luther (“Who You’d Be Today” “Let’s Make Love”) has signed a publishing agreement with Sony/ATV Nashville.

My tunes: MusiC that shaped My life

Clear Channel WMZQ/Washington & WPOC/Baltimore PD Meg Stevens discusses her most meaningful songs, albums or concerts:1. You And Me Against The World/Helen Reddy: I can’t believe I’m admitting this. I was nine and my mother and I drove my sister to college. That song was a big hit at the time and I remember it playing every five minutes on the radio. It’s made me think of that trip ever since. My mother died in August, so now

if I even hear Helen Reddy’s name it makes me smile!2. Peter Frampton Frampton Comes Alive & Lynyrd Skynyrd Pronounced: These were the first two albums anyone ever gave me. I got Frampton for Christmas and Kippy Fazzone gave me Skynyrd for my 13th birthday. I had a big crush on Kippy. 3. Journey & Men at Work, New Haven Coliseum, 1981: The first time I learned that drinking impairs your judgment.4. K-Tel collection w/ Chevy Van/Sammy Johns & Jackie Blue/Ozark Mountain Daredevils: I wore it out! It just makes me remember how important music was/is to me, and how important that bond between people and music is. I try to bring that to work with me every day.5. Dixie Chicks, New York City: It was the week before I moved from Syracuse to Cleveland. The show was phenomenal and it was a weekend spent with good friends.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Any highly regarded rap music.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Any Dylan or George Jones.• The album you’ve played/heard more times than any other: Shaun Cassidy Greatest Hits. I can’t lie. I spent hours in my room listening and singing along to it. Plus Carole King’s Tapestry. Probably my favorite album of all time.

Star DeAzlan, Brad Cotter and Rio Grand are some of the performers for the Platinum Express & Digital Rodeo An Afternoon Of Stars, Wishes & Celebration benefiting Make A Wish of Middle Tennessee. The event takes place June 4 at Fuel in Nashville. Troy Gentry is a partner with the Patient Advocate Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides case management and healthcare information. Gentry will appear in a public service announcement for the organization. Both parties hope to provide this information to millions of Americans without healthcare. Gentry’s interest in the cause stems from his late mother’s struggle with cancer and his role in helping her navigate the healthcare system. Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt kicked off the Savannah Music Festival with their first performance together in almost 10 years. Congrats to Sara Evans, who has announced her engagement to former University of Alabama quarterback and Sports WJOX/Birmingham morning personality Jay Barker.

tuBe CheCk and WUBL/Atlanta PD Clay Hunnicutt. “We’re just looking at things case by case and also looking at ratings to see where we can push the limits of not just currents and recurrents, but also gold to grow libraries, deliver variety and still play the hits.” Hunnicutt adds that the station by station decision is aided by “counsel from outside PDs who are in similar competitive situations, along with the Regional VPs of Programming, and anybody else the PD or OM includes in the conversation or decision making process.” CC RVPP and KEEY/Minneapolis PD Gregg Swedberg was involved with KUSS/San Diego PD Mike O’Brian during that station’s recent music mix conversion. “It’s not my place to comment on CC’s ‘policy’ regarding music, except to say

that there isn’t one as far as I know,” he says. “I do know that the one thing that (CC Radio President) John Hogan and all the senior execs have said is that if we aren’t experiencing optimal performance, we should be doing something other than what we were doing while underperforming.” Asked about what the stations had

been doing in the past and the future direction, Hunnicutt responds, “We saw a ton of research and information from listeners about what kind of gold they wanted and how much. But as we all know, things change and tides turn and we have to be able to adapt and give the listeners what they want. There’s a very thin line between too much new and not enough new,

and too much old and not enough old. That line keeps moving and luckily the music coming out right now is fantastic. There’s no shortage of great new artists. Plus, our foundation artists continue to deliver big hits that we’ll be playing for a very long time – another big reason for some moves.” The proper mix is also dictated by marketplace conditions. “It’s all dependent on what the strategy for the station is,” Swedberg says. “Stations that need to live 45-54 should probably have a different mix than those who are newer, trying to get established.” Offering his take on a target music mix, Hunnicutt adds, “Some stations can really take chances because they are dominant, others may not be as daring because their competitor is on top of them song for song and they’re covering a particular position. The key is to find a great balance of gold and currents/recurrents. For most stations it’s going to be in the 30% range (plus or minus 5%) for the currents, same for recurrents, then in the 35-45% range for gold.” Rising current percentages do not necessarily mean a station has increased its playlist. Higher percentages can also mean some currents are being played more often, a point emphasized by Hunnicutt. “The big key here that I think is being ignored is that it’s not necessarily about percentages. It’s about which titles are playing, which titles aren’t, and how many times you play, or don’t play, each one. You can be at 35% current but if they’re all risks and not hits then you’ve killed the station. If you’re at 25% current and not playing the big hits enough that’s devastating. I think it’s more about title selection across all currents, recurrents and gold than it is about percentage rates.” In our coverage of KUSS’s conversion, PD Mike O’Brian noted that they were responding to “the single largest country research study in San Diego history and found that there was a real hole for a newer, more current, more hip Country station.” Asked if research he’s seen has shown a shift in what listeners want from Country stations today – and whether there is a newfound desire/hole for new music – Swedberg, says, “I never saw a shift away from listeners’ desire for new music. It’s one thing that Country listeners want and expect from our format. Maybe we as a format blew it by treating all new music the same in the late 90’s. Now, it’s not all they want – but it’s absolutely one of the top things they expect.”
