It’s amazing what you can discover about your own backyard when you know where to look.

But why go to the trouble of doing all the detective work when you can call upon any of the Salt Spring Visitor Centre’s many volunteers who’ve put together a slew of exciting island itineraries and must-see locales.

The most common question volunteers receive may be “Where’s the bathroom?” but they can offer a wealth of other information from hiking trails and dog-friendly parks to whale watching and concert information.

According to Janet Clouston, executive director of the Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce, which manages the centre, many visitors who

stop in are looking for places to stay, to eat and the latest event information.Embarrassed to look like a tourist in your own town? Don’t worry, about 25

per cent of the Visitor Centre’s 45,000 guests in 2012 were actually from Salt Spring Island.

The centre can be really helpful if you need to stock up on information to give out-of-town guests a jump on what’s happening around the island.

The centre is also a frequent stop for newcomers who are just getting used to life on Salt Spring.

“I know one of the first places I visited when I moved to Salt Spring was the Visitor Centre,” Clouston said.
