At this week’s Vesper Service, I reminded everyone of a fa-miliar but very important verse of scripture from Revelation 3. It is the word of the Lord found in verse 20. Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” The promise of the Father is rich and deep communion with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I believe it is the place of spiritual rejuve-nation and encouragement. Many times it is the place of revelation into the depths and riches of Scripture. The presence of Jesus is life changing.

The image of the door has always intrigued me. Practically speaking, a door has two purposes. It provides an open entrance or it assures privacy and isolation. Jesus clearly indicates that one’s life can be open and receptive to His presence or shut off in self centered-ness. A life and heart that opens itself is surrendered to whatever God wants to do. And what does He want to do? He expresses it like this in John 10:10, “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full.” An open life door welcomes the fullness of life!

However, I am also keenly aware that keeping the door of my life closed to Christ can be intentional or non-intentional. I believe we have been given the freedom to say no to the knock on the door. It’s a tragic decision with eternal implications but it remains a deci-sion one is free to make. But what about the non-intentional decision to keep the door closed? Have you ever been so busy or distracted in your own home that you didn’t hear a knock at the door? It happens doesn’t it?

I trust the various spiritual disciplines emphasized during Lent will be helpful. Bible study, prayer, fasting, meditation and other focused means of grace have a way of overcoming the distrac-tions. Our hearing improves vastly! A knock is heard. A door (my heart) is opened. And the presence of Jesus changes everything! Blessings and peace, Len
