Theme 2Normalizing Water and
‘De-normalizing’ Sugar-Sweetened Beverages
March 22, 2016 Page 22 of 42 A 3 - Library
Why all the fuss about sugar?
• Excess free sugar has been linked with chronic diseases including overweight/obesity, heart disease/stroke, diabetes, dental caries, and some cancers.
• In 2015, the World Health Organization released recommendations for children & adults to limit intake of free sugars to less then 10% of daily calories.
• A further reduction to below 5% per day would provide further health benefits.
March 22, 2016 Page 23 of 42 A 3 - Library
What does 5-10% mean?
• Free sugars include sugar added to food + natural sugars like fruit juice, syrup, honey
• Children under 4 = 3 to 6 teaspoons • Children 5 to 13 = 5 to 10 teaspoons • Children 14+ = 6 to 12 teaspoons
March 22, 2016 Page 24 of 42 A 3 - Library
Why all the fuss about sugar?
• On average, children consume 3 x the recommended level (*15% vs. 5%)
• Average intake for a 4 to 8 year old in a
year is 4300 cubes or 11 bags
• For a 5 year old, that is the equivalent of their body weight
March 22, 2016 Page 25 of 42 A 3 - Library
Why sugar-sweetened beverages?
• Sugary drinks are the single largest contributor of sugar in the diet
• These include 100% fruit juice, pop, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit drinks (punch and cocktails), ice tea, lemonade & Freezies
