WELLNESS

Niloofar’s Wellness Tip

Coloring Books are Coming!!! Yes, I know you are a full grown adult, but coloring is not just for kids! You may know that in

recent years, coloring books for adults have become very trendy, with books like Johanna

Basford’s “Secret Garden” even topping the Amazon Bestsellers list. But coloring isn’t just

trendy, it’s therapeutic, too.

Groundbreaking research in 2005 proved that coloring reduces anxiety levels, decreases

heartrate, and changes brainwaves. Essentially, coloring is a form of meditation, because it

forces you to become more present and focused. And it’s fun, too!

So, this week, look for a coloring book and set of colored pencils on your docent units. I hope

you will take frequent breaks from your studying to “meditate” with for a few minutes here and

there. When you’ve finished a page, hang your artwork up in your office or on your unit, or feel

free to bring it over to the Wellness Office and we can start a gallery. And please share your

artwork on our UMKC School of Medicine Wellness Program page on Facebook at

www.facebook.com/somwellness.

Happy Coloring!
