SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY XAVIERITE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE STUDENTS the Wednesday, March 20, 2013 Vol. 82 No. 19 www.sxustudentmedia.com Pages 10-11 Diner Draws Cricisms Students took a highly critical stance toward the Saint Xavier diner in a recent Xavierite survey. The survey, conducted last month, asked 100 SXU students to rate their overall diner experience on a scale of one to five, with five being excellent and one being poor. The final average was 2.91. A central complaint involved pricing. Students strongly condemned the diner’s prices with 90 percent of those surveyed claiming that the costs of diner food are too high. Stephanie Moye, Senior Director of Dining Services at Saint Xavier University, attributed the high prices to a number of factors including economic growth and the inflation rate. She explained that environmental problems, such as droughts, are causing a shortage of feed crops across the nation. This shortage makes feeding livestock more expensive, which in turn raises the cost of meat. With higher meat prices, consumer demand for egg and dairy products is increasing, which raises those foods’ prices as well. On top of this are rising fuel prices, which raise transportation costs. As a result, explained Moye, prices are rising everywhere for everything, including diner food. Austin Regan, a freshman computer science major remained skeptical saying “I work at outside [food] places and [prices] are way cheaper than here. Especially since we’re students, it really shouldn’t be this high.” Linda Moreno, Director of Auxiliary Services, emphasized, “No increases [in diner food] are allowed without definite specific verifications of commodity pricing increases that not only affect our dining system, but also trickle down to family grocery bills.” Thus, if there is a change in diner food pricing, it means overall prices in the economy are changing. Moreno said that this, in addition to product, labor and operating costs determine prices. She assured that the university does everything it can to keep prices low, but that it could never compete with prices in large corporations due to economies of scale. Moye cited the additional cost of hiring and keeping diner employees as a determinant of diner prices. “I think the employees deserve a raise every year. They work very hard,” she stated. Despite these external factors, Tony Bara Editor in Chief Page 12 New twists to old fairytales Page 2 Saint Xavier welcomes Pope Page 5 Brian and Grant duke it out. Page 17 SXU Soſtball on a tear... DINER 3 > page Students at Saint Xavier are displeased with the housing changes being made to university housing. Recently, the school expressed its intent to discontinue the majority of off-campus housing options available to students for the 2013-2014 school year. By the fall semester of 2014, the entirety of off-campus housing is projected to be eliminated. Many students are dissatisfied with this decision, including Jordan Morren, junior business management major, who stated that he does not believe that the school has jurisdiction to make such a decision. “I think it’s unfair for the school to try to restrict students to only living on campus,” expressed Morren. “A lot of upperclassmen enjoy the privilege of being able to live off campus, and being adults, should be able to choose whether or not they want to live on or off-campus. That shouldn’t be the school’s decision.” In a letter addressed to current resident students, John Pelrine, Vice President of Student Affairs, stated that the changes being made to university housing were decided upon in response to a consistently decreasing enrollment number. “It’s not fair for students to have to live in cramped living conditions because the school wants to save money,” Morren said of the university’s decision. “How are they going to put all of the people who were living in apartments onto campus, and still have room for all of the current freshman?” Khary Ferguson, sophomore business management major, also expressed concern for decreased space. Ferguson stated that he believes eliminating all off-campus university housing options will create less space in regards to Quall Hall living conditions. “I don’t think [the changes] provide enough options for the students. It doesn’t allow students enough space,” he commented. “I think that these decisions will lead students towards moving off-campus or commuting.” Even Beth Kamp, sophomore nursing major, found herself in agreement, although the new housing changes did not directly apply to her. “Personally, I planned on living on campus all four years, but for the school to limit options to only on-campus will be a turn- off for some people and shy them away from this school,” commented Kamp. “I think [the school] should keep some of the apartments so more of the student population will be satisfied.” Morren also expressed that a solely on-campus residency will only create more on-campus problems. “If the school does not want to offer off-campus housing, then they need to prepare to deal with all of the problems they have at off-campus housing locations to happen on campus,” he stated. Habemus Papem! PopeFrancis is the first non-EuropeanPope in over 1000 years to takeoffice.FormerlyknownasCardinalJorge Bergoglio of Argentina,FrancisisthefirstpopeeverfromtheAmericas. He is also the firsteverJesuitpopeaswellasthefirstpope(265popesprecededhim)totakethenameFrancis. Thus , s ymbol i ca l l y, herepresents a break with the oldworld, with theold centerof theRomanCatholicChurch.Hehasthe opportunity to continue thisstreak of “newness” and breathenew life into a religion that hasgraduallybeenlosinginfluenceinthewesternworld. At the sametime, justasPopeFrancis, thesonofItalianimmigrantstoArgentina, hasconnectionswiththeoldworld,so too canheuphold traditionalCatholicmoralitywhichhasbeenpassed down over 2000 years ofchurchhistory. Forthesereasons,PopeFrancishasaccuratelybeendescribedasabridgebuilderbetweentheoldandthenew.Tofurtherunderstandthisanalogy,letusexaminethestateofCatholicismintheworldtoday. InNorthAmerica, theamountofCatholicsasapercentageofthetotal worldCatholic populationis 7.3 percent. In Europe, thepercentageoftotalworldCatholicshas fallen from 38.5 percent to23.7 percent in the last 40 years(BBC).ForthosewhodopracticeCatholicisminthewesternworld, church attendancehas also beenfalling(Gallup). On t h e o t h e r h a n d ,Catholicism is growing in thedevelopingworld.Africacontains15.2percentoftheworld’sRomanCatholic population, and thenumber continues to grow, whileSouth America contains 41.3percent of theworld’sCatholics, givingitaplurality(BBC). To ef fect ively meet thechallenge of this demographicshift, the pope must be opento reorganizing the church tobettermeettheneedsoftheflockwherever that flock is located. Ifthismeansmovinginstitutionsandpersonnel around the globe, thepopemustnotbeafraidtodoso. Who better to accomplishthis then Pope Francis, a nativesonof theworld’smostCatholiccontinent, who himself mustrelocate thousands of miles toRomeforhisnewjob? Another trait the popeneeds in order to navigate thisincreasinglymulticultural church

is an understanding of andcompassionforthemanydifferentpeoplesandwaysoflifeacrosstheglobe.Noteveryone in theworldisaswelloffas thosewholive intraditionalCatholic centers likeEurope. Contrariwise, mostCatholicsnowliveinthedevelopingworld, which is why Pope Francis’sdedication to the poor is soimportant. He has lived amongthem and worked with them, witnessing their suffering firsthand. If there was any pope tounderstand the “least amongus,” itwouldbePopeFrancis, anextremelyhumbleman, whoevenchosehisnameafterSaintFrancisofAssisi, amanwhohimselflivedsimply, embracingnature. Thepopemustalsopracticeintegrity. With a global churchcomes global criticism, and thepopemustnotonlyensurethatheis trustworthy but that his entirechurchis.Areligioncannotsurvivewithoutcredibility,andcredibilityisbuiltontrust. Indeed, a principal causeof Catholicism’s decline in thewesternworldhasbeenthehorriblesex abuse scandals which haveplaguedthechurchformanyyearsnow.Inordertorepairitsrelationswiththewesternworldandforgeanewopportunity for growth, theCatholicChurchmusttakeahardlinestanceagainstsexualabuse. Thepopemust be preparedto turn accused clergymembersover to legal authorities insteadofallowingbishops toshift themto other parishes. Pope Francisappears to be a shyman, but hecannotbetimidonthismatter.Indeed,timiditywillnotservethepopewellinanyrespect.Hemustbeboldinordertobreathenewnessintothechurch. At the same time, hemustbe bold in upholding traditionalCatholic values and not bowingto popular pressure on variouspolitical issues. The CatholicChurchhasexistedfor2000yearsbecause it contains a backboneofvalues thathave forgeda solidfoundationthroughthestormsofthecenturies.Thebreakingofthisbackbonewould undermine thechurch to such an extent that itmightnotrecover. "Living on campus isn’t as interesting as I thought it would be, but I prefer it this way. I chose to live on campus because the commute to and from campus would have been ridiculous. I like the people I have met on campus. If I was a com-muter, I wouldn’t have met my amazing friends.”

Dominique Joly, Freshman

Many residents have passed through Saint Xavier in

its 167 year history. Over the course of that time,

many of their experiences were very different.

Yet you might be surprised to see how much hasn’t

changed, and how much the Saint Xavier students of

today resemble the students of old. Below we have in-

cluded photos depicting Saint Xavier resident students

over the decades. We hope that these photos induce

not only a sense of nostalgia, but of a connection to

our past which all of us at the university share. When one first thinks about the daily life of the average Saint Xavier student on campus, one usually thinks about a home away from home, school spirit, and an uplifting and helpful resident community. One occasionally forgets the role that the Office of Residence Life plays in the everyday life that students are able to enjoy partaking in. The Office of Residence Life oversees the operations of the residence halls, University apartments and activities for students on campus. Doing so causes Residence Life to cooperate with a variety of different organizations including Chartwells, Comcast, Facilities, the Department of Information Technology (IT), property vendors, the launderer, and the student body in or- der to provide students with a positive experience while living on campus. It is a frequent mistake by students to think that Residence Life has the ability to fix every little thing that goes wrong in the dorms such as difficulties with connecting to the internet and to the cable box along with operating the washing machines and dryers in the residence halls. In reality, Residence Life doesn’t have the authority to fix these prob-lems. Instead, they play the important role of listening to student complaints and then passing those greviences along to the departments, people and organi-zations who have the expertise and authority to address those problems. In the end, it is the SXU’s administration who have the final say in most matters of importance regarding most major decisions involving the resident halls such as which ones to open up, what renovations are to be made and the leases on the apartments Another important function that Campus Life serves is to offer students a variety of benefits not enjoyed as easily by commuters. Among these benefits are an ability to access the services provided by the University such as the library, the learning center, the health center, the Shan- non Center, tutoring, and consoling services with greater ease and con- venience along with the ability to serve a greater role in life on campus. =What made you decide to live on campus?+

"Living on campus isn’t as interesting as I thought it would be, but I prefer it this way. I chose to live on campus because the commute to and from campus would have been ridiculous. I like the people I have met on campus. If I was a com-muter, I wouldn’t have met my amazing friends.”

Dominique Joly, Freshman Christian Rosales, Sophomore

“I think living on campus is great! I chose to stay on campus because I live far from campus and it’s a great way to meet people. I’m not really the talkative type, but living on campus allowed me to come out of my comfort zone and meet new people. It gives me the full college experi-ence. It’s an overall great experience to live on campus!”

Kahla Marshall, Sophomore

“As a transfer, I like living on campus be-cause it helped me to meet new people. I like living across the hall from my best friends and having a place to go in between classes. It’s nice not to have to drive to school for classes everyday. It’s really convenient.”

sist resident students with the various stresses of life away from home. Resident Assistants (RA’s) deal with helping students deal with various difficulties and conflicts that might emerge between students in the residence halls, setting up programs to get residents involved in the SXU resident commu-nity, and aiding in the administration of the residence hall on the ground level. Resident Peer Ministers (RPM’s) act as spiritual mentors for resident students. A newer student leadership position, currently being tested in Regina Hall, is the RPals who help provide support for residents with academic mat-ters. Finally, Residence Life provides a variety of programs for resident stu-dents to enjoy. Currently, they are working with Residence Life to organize and operate the annual SXU Late Night, a evening carnival-type event meant to give residents an opportunity to gather together and participate in an evening’s worth of activities to get their minds off of the stresses of life as a college student. Overall, Residence Life’s goal is to provide resident students with an enjoyable dorming experience that they will remember for years to come. They aim to relieve student frustrations as much as possible, often work-ing with both the students, the administration, and the vendors to make an arrangement that is mutually benefitial to everyone involved. On top of that, they work towards actively getting as many students as possible involved in life on campus through activities and programs. “We see housing as an intigral part of student life.” Said Katy Thomp-son, the Director of Residence Life, on what role Residence Life plays in life for students. You can find Residence Life on the ground floor of Rubloff Hall right next to the hall’s entrance, where the office is currently located. The office is open on weekdays until 4:30 and you can find a majority of the Residence Life’s staff living in the resident halls alongside the students. Also students can meet with their RA’s and RPM’s at most times.

Movies and television are bringing new twists to old stories. Not Your Grandma’s FairytaleBecki BrownSenior Features Editor

Onceuponatime, therewerethese thingscalled fairytales.TheBrothersGrimm collected themintobooks.Fathers, mothersandgrandparents spun them to littletikes sitting by the fireplace on astormynight. Theywere stories ofmagic, princesses, monsters, andheroes.Forhundreds(ifnotthousands)ofyears,mankindhasbeenexposedtofairytalesofallkinds. Lately, therehavebeensomedrastic changes in how fairytalesare presented inmovies and ontelevision. Fairytalemoviesarebecomingalmost as popular as vampiremovies(althoughitcouldbearguedthattheyareasubgenreoffairytale

movies; alas, that is a topis foranothertime). However, themoviesarenotexactly like the fairytales theyarebased on. Instead,Hollywood isgivingthemnewapproachestotheclassictales. Jack the Giant Slayer recentlycame into theaters. The film isbasedonJack and the Beanstalk aswell as Jack the Giant Killer, butitaddsnewelementstothestorymashup.Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Snow White and the Huntsman are two other fairytalefilmsthathavebeengivennewplotpointsandtwists. The silver screen is not theonly place you can see revampedfairytales. Television is quicklyjoiningitsbigscreencounterpartsin the creation ofmore updatedfairytalestories.

ABC’sOnce Upon A Timecompletely modernizes manyfairytale classics, including SnowWhite,Rumplestiltskin,RedRidingHood,Pinocchio, andmanyothers.Allofthesecharactersarethrowntogetherinamodernsetting(andI’m pretty sure everyone havingamnesiaisintheplotsomewhere). Sowhat is the point of allthis?Traditionalfairytalesarebeingexposedtoanewgeneration. Iamsurethattherearepeoplewho had never heard some ofthesestoriesbeforeseeingtheminmovies, especiallywithagrowthintelevisionwatchingandadropinbookreading. Thisisachanceforstoriesandthelessonstheytelltobepresentedinthewaythattheywouldbebestreceived. Butwhyweretheymodernized?

Couldn’t they have justmade amovie adaptation set when theoriginalstorieswereset? Well, sometimes it isharderto connect with something youdonot reallyunderstand. IknowIunderstood the feelingofbeingf lung into a role completelydifferent fromwhat youareusedtobetterfromParent TrapthanfromThe Prince and The Pauper. Sure, theywerenotreallythesame story, but themessagewasthesame.ThedifferenceisIcouldrelatetobeingatwelve-year-oldgirlasopposedtoEnglishnobility. Whymake changes to theplot? We could justmodernizethem. But the thing is that evenbymodernizingafairytale, youareaddinganewtwisttothestory. Fairytales are stories, andstories change over time. The

This is The Xavierite’s ear-liest known masthead. It

dates from 1944.

This article is from 1994. It reports on a brand new phenomenon sweeping SXU and the world--the internet. Here are some excerpts

The Xavierite Through the Decades

These are student opinions from 1960 on the presi-dential debate between John F. Kennedy and Rich-ard Nixon. This was the first televsied presidential debate ever.

The Xavierite has been in existence since 1935. In that time, many students, faculty and staff have passed through Saint Xavier. Each genera-tion has brought its own unique story. Yet, in many respects, common themes have permeated our school’s history. In the next two pages, I have reprinted excerpts from our Xavierite archives that I find interesting, histroirical or both. I hope you take the time to read them and see who walked this campus before you. Unfortunately, due to space constraints, I could not print each article in its entirety. For the full version of each article on here and more, visit our website at www.sxustu-dentmedia.com.

This headline and illustra-tion is from 1993, when the Cougar football team played its first ever game. They have sure come a long way.

By Tony BaraEditor in Chief

Page 15The XavieriteWednesday, March 20, 2013

The debate over how to prounounce Saint Xavier was resolved decades ago. Here is an article on the topic from 1956.

Parking problems are nothing new at SXU. This article from 1976 is a tes-tament to that.

Students enjoying a Xavierite in 1948

This article from 1998 is a trip back in movie history. It describes “Titanic’s” huge box office success and the possibility of it surpassing “Star War’s” success, which it ultimately did.

The Great Debate: Who is More Dominant: Lebron James or Lionel Messi?Damone GriffinFeatures Contributor

Therearenotwoathletesmore dominant right now thanLionelMessiandLebronJames. Iknowtheyplaytwodifferentsports, but if ESPN can wastetimedebatingaboutwhichstreakwas better, the Heat’s or theBlackhawk’s, then surely I candebateaboutLebronJames(MiamiHeat) and LionelMessi (FutbolClubBarcelona). I have divided

thisargumentintofourcategories.

Better Video Game Stats Wheneve r any a th l e t enowadays delivers such amindblowing performance, fansmayusethephrase“videogamestats”todescribehow tremendous thatathlete’sperformancewas. Both James andMessi havetheirfairshareofgameswheretheyhaveputupstaggeringnumbers. Messi hasmultiple four-goalgamesonhisresume,includingan

unprecedented five-goal game, whichisunheardofforthelevelofcompetitionhefaces. Jameshadastretchofsixgameswhere he scoredmorethan 30 points and shot atleast60percentfromthefloorwhich just bogglesmymindconsideringhe takes themostshotsontheteam. This is a close categoryto judge, but Ihave togive toMessi because his numbersoverallarerecord-breaking.Hescored 91 goals in a calendaryear for Barcelona, smashingthepreviousrecordof85.Jameshasunbelievablestats,butotherlegendaryplayershaveachievedtheminthepast.Winner: Messi.

Better Championship Pedigree Every dominant athletein professional sports mustsolidifytheirspotinthehistorybooks by winning as manychampionshipsaspossible. This is where loyal fansturn into rabid criticswhen itcomestothesetwomagnificent

athletes. Neither one has hadmajorsuccess winning championships.JameshaswononeNBA title inten seasons andMessi has wonseveralLaLigatitlesandacoupleChampionsLeaguetitles, butnottheFIFAWorldCup. They both have performedverypoorlyinmomentswheretheyshouldperformasachampionthathistorywillrememberfordecades. Thisisatoughonetobutthewinner is Lebron simply becauseJameshaswontwogoldmedalsandanNBAtitle, andthosearethetwomost prestigious championshipsa player canwinwith a team inbasketball.Messi has notwon aWorldCupyetorhasevenhadamemorablemoment, somethingthat cannot bemissing fromhislegacy.Winner: Lebron.

Better In-game entertainer Lebron wins this categorybecauseeverygameheisathreattobea“toptenplay”onSportsCenter. Messimakesanunbelievableamount of entertaining plays onthe field, but he does not createthesameTwitterandYouTubebuzzthatLebrondoes.Lebronhasmorehighlights featuring spectacularpasses and acrobatic dunks thananyotherplayerintheleaguerightnow. Imean theman completelyhurdledoverafullygrownhumanbeingtosuccessfullythrowndownaviciousalley-oop.Winner: Lebron.

Better Trophy Collection

Iamonlyputtingstock intothe awards James andMessiwonasprofessionalathletesbecausethatiswhenthesetworeallystartedtoestablishtheirlegacies. Lebronhaswon2NBAAllStar GameMVP awards, NBARookieof theYear,3NBAMVPAwards, and aNBAFinalsMVPAward. WithallthatbeingsaidMessiis the winner of this categorybecause everymajor individualsoccerawardthereistowinMessihaswonthepastfouryears!

Winner: Messi.

Who wins? Lebronismoredominantbyahair,orIshouldsaytitle. HehasachievedgreatnessatthepinnacleofhissportbywinningtheNBAFinals andbeingFinalsMVP. Messi hasnotwon aWorldCupdespite consistent greatnessandrecordbreakingnumbers. Without aWorldCup forMessi, Lebron remains themostdominantathleteinsportsfornow.
